Down on the Farm By Lori Garton, Farm Manager
The holiday season is upon us and the farm is celebrating right along with the rest of us. Our aquaponics greenhouses are thriving. We are currently growing carrots, beets, kale, spinach, turnips, onions, and lots more. Our relatively mild Winters will allow us to continue to grow throughout this time of year. In addition to weeding and harvesting, we are planning on expanding our chicken enclosure large organic matter, such as logs and sticks, which breaks down slowly over time and Besides tending to our crops and other chores, we are busy caring for over 100 rainbow trout that are happily swimming in our aquaponic greenhouses. However, the trout are a cold water only do the trout feed our plants with their rich “fertilizer, but they also help keep our pests down. Since trout are insectivores, we are feeding them pests like aphids, grasshoppers, grubs,
the Mescalero Apache Tribe (MAT) Fisheries, who generously provided us with the Rainbow Trout. It’s barely the start of Winter, but we are already thinking about Spring planting. We will be If you are interested in growing organic vegetables, come out to the farm during our weekly volunteer days – Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 AM to 12 PM in December. And a shoutout to our awesome volunteers last month: Jessica, Marcus, Justin, Ruth, Christina, Roberta, Kevin, and Elisa - you rock! You can also get a detailed lesson about sustainable agriculture techniques every month at one of our farm workshops. Up this month, Aquaponics! Hope to see you there!
BODy + Soul Opportunity and Growth By Paul Heiberger, MVM Board President One of the topics that has been a regular part of the Board’s recent meetings is discussion regarding the various approaches to growing the Co-op: increasing sales, adding to membership, and, yes, even the idea of what moving to another location might look like. Any business, and ours is no exception, can be hindered by the question, “Why grow?” We have a good thing going. We like the location. We like how the store is arranged. Why grow? Why change? The mantra of “grow or die” comes to mind, and there is good reason that this old adage rings true. On a national level, literally thousands of natural food stores are slated to open. The long-term plans of Whole Foods, Trader Joes, and the like all involve opening an incredible number of new stores. Clearly these companies think that there is an opportunity to grow. If the cooperative business model is one that can be successful, it must be successful in the face of this immense competition. Locally, we are no exception, and we will soon have another “organic” grocer, come April. Natural Grocers, a division of Vitamin Cottage, is not a small company. They have done their research, identifying the best locations to open another store, and Las Cruces is one of those places. If they see an opportunity to grow and expand into Las Cruces – what is the Co-op’s opportunity to do the same? Is it better for the Co-op, rather than Vitamin Cottage, to get the business of new residents to Las Cruces? If you would like an excellent primer on what the Board has been considering, and the broader implications of the various forms of growth, check out the videos here: https://cdsconsulting.centraldesktop.com/cbld/doc/17721097 The Cooperative Café is a national effort for cooperatives to work together in exploring the questions of why we must grow and how best to achieve the growth. There are many inspirational stories of how co-ops have dealt with the challenges of growing, as well as the successes that have come from those efforts. Mountain View Market could already match those inspirational examples with some of our efforts over the past years – our new restaurant downtown and the farm come to mind – but we cannot rest on what has worked in the past or become complacent. Competition is already here, with more on the way. We can either rise up to meet that competition and prove the validity of an alternative economic model, or we can fade away. Why grow? Because that is how we can have another forty years of Mountain View Market. be an exciting 2014!
