News from the Kitchen! By Caitlin Karrenberg, Kitchen Manager Your exquisite taste in fine dining has kept this kitchen quite busy! We calculated the numbers for 2013, and we’re pretty excited to say that y’all helped us increase our Kitchen sales by 102% over 2012! That translates into more support for local farmers and producers, more money for a living wage for our employees, and more good food in your bellies by allowing us to further invest in Kitchen improvements! We’re excited to report such extensive growth over the past year, and we’re not ready to slow down. With the expansion of our Fresh Meat program, the Kitchen will also be expanding its menu to include some of the new fresh meats: Kyzer Pork, Sweetgrass Beef, and Mary’s Chickens. You’ve already seen Kyzer pork on the breakfast menu, and we’ve used Mary’s chicken and Sweetgrass beef in our made-from-scratch soups: Hearty Chicken and Veggie; Green Chile Chicken and Rice; Curried Beef; and Beef and Barley. We also plan to introduce entrees featuring the new meats. We’re also working on honing our baking skills. We currently offer muffins from Living Harvest Bakery and Belle Sucre Bakery, but we plan to roll out (baking pun!) gluten-free and vegan options made in-house by our wonderful Kitchen. This will include gluten-free and/or vegan scones, muffins, cookies, biscuits, brownies, and other sweet treats. And of course, we’ll stay committed to using only the best ingredients - all certified organic flours and sweeteners. Lastly, you might have noticed the Dining Passport table tents in the Downtown Kitchen and El Paseo Café. The Las Cruces Convention and Visitors Bureau is offering a prize of $750 in edible prizes and gifts certificates to any Dona Ana County resident who dines and gets their Dining Passport validated at participating restaurants. Both Kitchen locations are participating, so don’t forget to pick up a Dining Passport and get it validated by one of our cheerful Kitchen staff. Down on the Farm By Lori Garton, Farm Manager

Winter is still present, but we are already planting seedlings for Spring. The hustle and bustle of Spring preparations are some of the best chores all year. Currently, we are planting cool weather crops like spinach, arugula, swiss chard, and lettuce, as well as warm weather crops like tomatoes, eggplant, and peppers. In addition, our seedlings aren’t just for the MVM Farm - they are for you too! They’d be a great addition to anyone’s garden. A variety of seedlings will be available for purchase at the Co-op and at Ardovino’s Farmers’ Market in Sunland Park in the upcoming weeks. They are grown in OMRI listed organic potting soil along with a mixture of MVM Farm compost and MVM Farm worm castings. Our greenhouses and hoophouse are filling up fast. We are planting kale, culinary herbs, and lettuces in our aquaponic greenhouses. Our fish are growing too. We are looking into our next batch of fish for the Spring, and it may include catfish. We are preparing beds to be planted. In addition to tilling the soil, we add local non-gmo, hormone-free, and antibiotic-free aged manure, MVM Farm compost, and worm tea. The rows are then carefully shaped to make them perfect for planting. We have three new NMSU interns and one high school volunteer from the Rio Grande Preparatory Institute that are helping us out weekly until the end of the semester. We are so glad to have their help, and we hope that they take their experience and knowledge to do more of the same work here in our community.

One of our awesome volunteers from NMSU

At the Farm Fun for Kids Workshop in January Last month the MVM Farm was fortunate enough to be able to partner with Anthony Farms and deliver over 180 pounds of MVM Farm produce (over 300 pounds of produce total) to local elementary schools in Las Cruces for their root crop tasting. It was a great success and honor, and we are looking forward to doing it again. Anytime we can expose youth to the greatness of organic growing, we love to take the opportunity. Speaking of youth, we had a blast at our Farm Fun for Kids workshop in January. Children came out to tour the farm and learned about animal care and composting, as well as planted some seeds of their own. We loved it so much that we are planning on doing it again. If organic gardening is your thing, or if you want it to be, consider joining us for a sustainable agriculture workshop on the first Saturday of each month. The Container Gardening Workshop is on February 1st and our very popular Spring Planting Workshop is on March 1st. These workshops are aimed at getting you ready to grow this year without toxic chemicals. If you’d like to get your hands in the dirt, some sunshine on your shoulders, and help your farm grow all at once, come to any of our volunteer days: every Wednesday and Saturday from 9am-12pm at 2653 Snow Road in Mesilla. A big thank you to all of our volunteers and our new interns for their interest in the farm. Without you, we couldn’t grow. Planting tomatoes in February, Lori Garton, MVM Farm Manager

Mountain View Market Co-op received the 2013 Las Cruces Sun-New Readers’ Choice Award for Best Grocery Store in Las Cruces! Save the Date! Our Annual Member Meeting and Co-op Expo will be held on the evening of Saturday, April 12th, 2014.

A total of 125 classes and workshops were hosted at the Co-op throughout 2013. Co-op employees taught 43 classes and workshops to over 260 community members. Community members taught 82 classes and workshops to over 240 attendees. In addition, the Co-op donated over $2,000 to 31 different local organizations throughout 2013!

BODy + Soul At the December 2013 Board of Directors’ meeting, the Board of Directors voted to not issue a 2013 Patronage Rebate. There are many reasons for this decision, the most important being the continued growth of our Co-op. The addition of our Downtown Kitchen location, the in-store expansion of our Kitchen, and the growth of our delivery and online ordering service all required investments in equipment and additional labor. It is essential that we invest in improvements in operational capacity if we are to continue to grow as a successful local business. Our community continues to grow and change around us, and we must grow and change as well to meet the needs of our membership. This is an exciting time for the Co-op, and we are fortunate to be able to invest in our future growth. We continue to support the MVM Farm as well as other local producers. Our commitment to food sovereignty, locally-sourced food, sustainable agriculture, and community education are all evident in the support the Co-op has given and will continue to give. We can proudly say that the MVM farm continues to provide freshly harvested vegetables to Mountain View Market’s shelves on a twiceweekly basis. The MVM farm along with other growers is also growing food for the Las Cruces Public Schools, to ensure a new generation of healthy eaters! The lack of a Patronage Rebate does not mean the Co-op is not doing well; on the contrary, we continue to grow and thrive in this community, even in an unstable economy. In order to sustain this growth, we must invest in the future. This investment comes in many different forms, including purchasing new equipment, investing in local agriculture, and improving the store’s environment for employees, members, and all patrons. We are also very proud to say we can offer a livable wage to every one of our employees, as well as many other employee benefits. In short, it is important that we use our equity to invest in the future and ensure our continued success as a community-owned business. You can expect to see many more improvements in the coming year, including an even stronger commitment to locally-sourced products. And remember, Patronage Rebates are only a small component of your Membership benefits. Most importantly, you are an owner of a local, democratically-run business. Your voice matters to us. Members will continue to receive great discounts on quality products each month (totaling almost $70,000 in 2013), as well as discounts and special offers at other locally-owned businesses through our We Cooperate! Program. Many more details about the Co-op’s reinvestment into the long-term health of our business will be available during the Annual Member Meeting and Co-op Expo coming up on April 12th. Keep an eye out for more information in upcoming newsletters. In cooperation, The Mountain View Market Board of Directors Thoughts, questions, comments? We want to hear from you, so please let us know how we're doing! Fill out a Customer Comment Card at the Courtesy Desk and drop it off in the Customer Comment box by the front door of the Co-op. If you leave your email or phone number, we’ll be able to respond to you!
