hicken cutlet curry is the thing to get at Kobe Curry. They were out of it the night we visited. We had to be satisfied with an appetizer of fried chicken, and we were. The signature appetizer is three big pieces of boneless chicken ($4.50), crunchy breading on the outside, tender and moist meat on the inside. Take or leave the accompanying mayonnaise dip. An appetizer of five dumplings ($4.50) wasn’t bad either, particularly if you get started with cold beer (Asahi, Sapporo, Orion or Echigo) in various sizes of glasses and pitchers. Other beverages — all priced at $1.50 — include Coke, Diet Coke, the non-carbonated soft drink Calpico, oolong tea and UCC Coffee, Japan’s pioneering canned coffee drinks.

If you’re a vegetarian, your only option is an appetizer, the daikon salad ($7.50). But it’s a good-size pile of mixed baby greens, daikon, cucumber and corn. You’ll have to ask them to leave off the bonito flakes. Which is too bad,

because they’re fun to watch. Bonito flakes are dried tiny tuna, which curl up on contact with other food items. There are five flavors of curry, but none are vegetarian. The sauce is a long-simmered mix of spices, beef and mushrooms. It is served in a gravy boat, to pour over a

plate of rice and meat. Or just rice. Plain curry ($8) does not mean vegetarian. It just means there’s no sausage, chicken, pork or beef tendon, all of which cost $9.50. All of the curries come with your choice of salad: green or macaroni (cold). Beef tendon was very good, but our favorite was

Weekend the pork cutlet. Like the fried chicken appetizer, the pork cutlet was hot, crunchy outside and juicy inside. The curry comes in mild, medium and spicy variations. Medium is lively but not challenging, just what it should be. You pour the rich sauce over rice and hot meat. It’s excellent and very filling. Kobe Curry is more inexpensive than Muracci’s, the Los Altos restaurant that introduced Japanese curry to the South Bay. But the menu at Kobe Curry is much smaller, the indoor dining non-existent and the ambience

highly dependent on the variables of Castro Street traffic. Service also could be variable. One night, the server ran nimbly between kitchen and tables with all the correct orders and then got chewed out by a would-be customer who came at 8:30 p.m., when Kobe Curry closes. “What restaurant closes at 8:30?” said the man, amid a sea of filled tables on Castro Street. Trying to get someone to answer the phone can be futile. My impression is that all the energy is going into the curry, not the organization.

Q MOVIEREVIEWS

THE EQUALIZER 00

In the violent vengeance fantasy, “The Equalizer,” Denzel Washington plays vigilante — a figure rare in reality and absurdly plentiful on the big screen. Adapted from the 1980s TV series starring Edward Woodward, “The Equalizer” tells the story of Robert McCall (Washington), an ex-operative of “the Agency.” McCall marks time as an employee of hardware retailer Home Mart and a frequenter of a greasy spoon. There, his budding friendship with teenage prostitute Teri (Chlole Grace Moretz, in a surprisingly affecting turn) winds up pulling him back into a lifestyle he has held at bay: dispensing violence to those who “deserve” it. Lonely, “kinda lost” widower McCall operates from an emotional resiliency that emerges in flashes of humor and a compassion that compels him to help his fellow woman (Teri) and man (Johnny Skourtis’s Home Mart employee, Ralphie). But as soon as McCall begins to dish out cold violence, interest drains from the picture. By suggesting that McCall’s victims deserve to die for their immorality and foolishness in crossing him, “The Equalizer” itself becomes immoral and distasteful. The star makes the film something of a guilty pleasure, but Washington’s performance — and some other compelling touches — form little more than a gilded cover wrapped around pure pulp. Rated R for strong bloody violence and language throughout, including some sexual references. Two hours, 11 minutes. — P.C.

THE SKELETON TWINS 000

A twin sib knows where all your skeletons are buried — one reason Craig Johnson’s dramedy goes by the title “The Skeleton Twins.” Another reason is that Maggie and Milo — played by erstwhile “SNL” cast-mates Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader — share a morbid sense of humor and self-destructive tendencies. Writers Johnson and Mark Heyman establish the bond between them with an opening sequence of both characters attempting suicide. Since Milo comes closer to succeeding, his attempt becomes the “cry for help” that reunites the siblings after a ten-year estrangement. Alone after failed relationships and jobless after umpteen auditions, Milo has good reason to retreat to Maggie’s upstate New York home when she somewhat reluctantly offers it. But it’s hardly an escape to return to the place they grew up. Inevitably, Milo reconnects with Rich (Ty Burrell), the closeted older man who drove a wedge between Milo and his sister. Meanwhile, Maggie plays house with a caring husband (Luke Wilson’s Lance), but like some kind of Ancient Greek goddess, she’s cursed with the inability to love and appreciate him in return. The endearingly flawed sibs prove all the more likeable through their pronounced, shared sense of humor: the last line of defense against depression. Rated R for language, some sexuality and drug use. One hour, 33 minutes. — P.C.
