WELCOME TO INFO MOUNTAIN VIEW Mountain View is an ever-evolving community that has emerged as an epicenter for tech giants, new ideas and vibrant cultural activities. Home to four Fortune 500 companies and 1,282 startups valued at over $5 million, it’s no surprise that the city was ranked among the Top 50 fastest growing economies in the the U.S. last year and the second best California suburb for millenials. During the past 12 months, the city has seen unprecedented growth along Castro Street with the opening of eight new restaurants along downtown’s eight-block stretch, as well as the planned launch of Google’s long-term expansion that eventually could add 3 million square of office space and about 10,000 new apartments to the city. Despite some growing pains — specifically traffic, the housing shortage and out-of-whack rental and real estate prices — residents across the city say Mountain View continues to be a place with close-knit neighborhoods and strong community activism. Our annual Info Mountain View publication aims to help residents get the most out of the community by capturing the most useful information needed to connect with neighborhood leaders, contact the city council or reach out to the mayor. Our Education section offers comparative information on public and private schools. The Outdoors chapter maps out where you can fish, skate, observe wildlife or just get away for the day. The Arts & Entertainment section provides a look at Mountain View’s newest restaurants and best places to catch a performance or learn about local history. In addition to this publication, you can visit mv-voice.com to stay up to date on news and events happening in Mountain View. Subscribe to Express, a daily email, and have the news delivered right to your inbox. Or check out Weekend Express, emailed on Thursdays, for the scoop on art and entertainment. Both are free; sign up at mv-voice.com/express.

Workshop helps ease retirement jitters
S
tuart Silverman’s own “failed” attempt at retirement two years ago, prompted the former business consultant to
create “Retirement and Your Next Stage of Life,” a free, fivepart interactive workshop on how to successfully transition from career to retirement that he began offering at various locations earlier this year. “I didn’t have a lot of leisure activities or hobbies, and I began to realize the difficulty I was having moving to the next stage,” Silverman said. “I thought that others might be experiencing the same thing.” Through his workshop, Silverman, now a certified retirement coach and founder of the Mountain View-based organization Next Stage Roadmaps, helps retirees make a smooth transition. His workshop covers a plethora of retirement concerns, including: lifestyle concerns, encore careers, health, finances and customizing a personal road map. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED ... Find upcoming courses, at NextStageRoadmaps.com or call 650-245-0950. Jim Stinger, a guest speaker at the “Retirement and Your Next Stage of Life” workshop, went from working as a research engineer at HP to selling his own paintings after taking an introductory watercolor class at Avenidas senior center following his retirement. Rengstorff Park transformation
T
he Mountain View Community Center at Rengstorff Park will be shut down until
mid 2019 while it undergoes a $23.5-million overhaul that will expand and spruce up the nearly 60-year-old facility, which hosts a variety of programs and recreational activities. When completed, the 21,600-square-foot center will gain a new social hall, two new fitness and dance rooms, and four multipurpose rooms as well as 7,000 additional square feet. Most of the center’s users have been relocated to other public facilities, but some of the city’s recreation classes and activities could be reduced due to a lack of space. Other facilities at Rengstorff Park, including the pool and tennis courts, will remain open under their usual schedules during the construction. The renovation is part of the Rengstorff Park master plan that includes updating every piece of the park. For renovation updates, go to bit.ly/MVCommunityCenter.
Students learn water safety in the pool at Rengstorff Park, which will remain open during the renovation of the Mountain View Community Center that kicked off on Aug. 14. File photo.

Mountain View gained a new community park in December 2016. Heritage Park, located at 771 N. Rengstorff Ave, gives visitors a glimpse of the city’s history as a farm town. The 1.2-acre park is the home of the historic Immigrant House — representative of field- worker housing when Santa Clara County was known as the Valley of Heart's Delight — as well as an 80-year-old windmill. In addition, Heritage Park includes beehives, a demonstration garden and about 150 trees.

Talk about your Harker experience. It’s been amazing. Coming from a public middle school I feel like I’ve had more opportunities to do more things and it’s probably been the best decision I made, ever.
What’s your favorite class? I love chemistry and biology. I plan to continue studying marine biology.
Harker wants to bring out the best in your child across all areas - academic, extracurricular and personal - so that students can discover their passions and make a positive impact on the world. We invite you to learn more about how Harker can inspire your children. Visit our website or
Describe the Harker community. It’s very welcoming and it’s so diverse. It’s so cool to see how different people get along really well together. Harker students and faculty always supporting each other is awesome.
What surprises you most about Harker? I’ve been surprised at how far teachers will go to help you to succeed – they are really passionate about that.
contact us! Founded in 1893, The Harker School is a Pre-12, college preparatory school in San Jose that has earned international recognition for its top academics, quality teachers and students’ achievements.
