GREETINGS Principal from the

Dear Friends of Mount de Sales,

We celebrate the Class of 2024, welcome the Class of 2028, and look forward to continued growth of the classes of ’25, ’26, and ’27 in the foundation built by all those who came before!

High school is a time of continuous opportunities to reflect, reimagine, and start anew. The Class of 2024 is not ending their time at MDSA but initiating a new beginning. The freshmen, sophomores, and juniors are not ending years, but renewing as more seasoned Sailors.

In this 2024 graduation issue of the View from the Cupola, we celebrate the recent graduates and recognize the accomplishments of present and past Sailors, including Olympians Bella Whittaker '20 and Juliette Whittaker '22. You will also read about the recent internal and external, thorough evaluations of how Mount de Sales Academy executes our mission and what is necessary to ensure continued success and long-term stability. What I hope stands out for you is the amazing growth of our students.

This vast achievement results from the education and deep roots formed at MDSA. Beyond learning and grades, growing in faith, discovering new interests and talents, creating new and lasting relationships, performances, wins and losses, and all that makes up the high school experience, MDSA students receive a connection to the welcoming MDSA family. Graduates obtain more than a diploma; they gain a one-of-akind connection to Sailor Sisters, the community, and all who recognize the uniqueness of Mount de Sales Academy.

As the school nears accreditation and renews its Advancement program, we will fortify our faith-filled foundation for ongoing growth.

Thank you for being with us on this journey. May we have smooth sailing while keeping in mind the words of St. Therese of Lisieux, “the world’s thy ship, not thy home.”

Sincerely in Christ,

sailor send-off for Olympians: BELLA & JULIETTE WHITTAKER

The Mount de Sales Academy community enthusiastically gathered on July 17, to celebrate Bella Whittaker ’20 and Juliette Whittaker ’22 as they prepared to compete in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The send-off was filled with inspiring well wishes, love, and support for these remarkable women.

Bella Whittaker ’20 (University of Pennsylvania) qualified for the 4x400 relay pool by finishing sixth in the 400 meters (50.68) at the U.S. Olympic Trials. Juliette Whittaker ’22 (Stanford University), the reigning NCAA Champion in the Women’s 800 meters, secured her spot in Paris with a thirdplace finish (1:58.45) at the Trials.

The entire Mount de Sales Academy community extended their best wishes to Bella and Juliette as they represent the United States at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Whittaker WATCH PARTY

On August 2, the MDSA community united for a lively Watch Party to cheer on Juliette in the Women’s 800M. Sporting pom-poms and patriotic accessories, attendees enjoyed cookies and popsicles while eagerly watching the race. The crowd erupted in excitement as Juliette advanced to the semi-finals with a third place finish in her heat and an impressive time of 2:00.45!

Juliette’s achievement showcases her dedication and the unwavering MDSA spirit. We are immensely proud of her success and the incredible support from our community. Here’s to more victories and celebrations at MDSA!

DE SALES goes to Paris

Director Alumnae Relations, Katie Ferrante '10, and her family were proud to represent Mount de Sales Academy and support our first Sailor Olympians at the 2024 games in Paris. When they were not cheering on Juliette in her three rounds of the 800 M, they spent time at historical sites such as the Palace of Versailles, the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Sainte-Chapelle, and the Chapel of the Miraculous Medal, and other iconic landmarks throughout the city of Paris. Enjoy the photos below from their trip.

performances IN PARIS

At first, Juliette Whittaker announced she was going to the Paris Olympics “ to soak it all in,” not mentioning that, of course, she qualified to compete there based on successful performances at the U.S. Olympic Trials in June in Oregon.

She and sister Bella were radiant on the U.S. team’s boat ride down the Seine to open the Games. After the first week, track events began, and Juliette found herself in the preliminary round of the Women’s 800 meters. She’d need a third-place finish to advance and this she accomplished with a sprint in the final 100 meters that brought her into third place and on to the semi-final round. Here Juliette was competing against (among others) the world #2 800-meter runner, who led from the start but then faded to fifth by the end. Juliette place third, but more importantly, her time of 1:57.76 (her best performance ever) advanced her to the final in the 800. Now anything seemed possible. This was no longer “soaking it all in”—not a matter of just being happy to be there.

In the final Juliette drew lane two for the start, which contributed to her being caught up in the middle when the runners merged after the first 100 meters. Here she remained, moving with the pack, unable to break out until the final 100 meters when she could make a move and ultimately finish seventh overall. An excellent performance on the world stage, one which leaves her determined to return in four years. One senses she will be ready and Mount de Sales will again be ready to follow and support her.

A DREAM FULFILLED

For Bella Whittaker '20, the road to the Paris Olympics was paved with hours of dedication, perseverance, and an unwavering belief in herself. Her journey reached a pinnacle when she secured a spot in the 4x400 meter relay pool, finishing sixth in the 400 meters with a remarkable time of 50.68 at the

U.S. Olympic Trials. But this achievement was more than just personal glory; it marked the realization of a shared dream that she had long held with her sister.

The Paris Olympics was not just another competition for them; it was the culmination of years of mutual support, shared sacrifices, and an unbreakable bond.

Although Bella was not selected to compete in the relay, she trained with other members of the relay pool and relished every moment, soaking in the atmosphere of the Games and the camaraderie of athletes from around the world.

SCIENCE showcase

The students from the Research in Science class shone brightly during the Science Showcase Night, where they presented their year-long research projects to the greater Mount de Sales and scientific community. With several distinguished guests from various fields in attendance, the students demonstrated exceptional poise and confidence while answering questions about their work. These budding scientists have such a bright future ahead! A huge thank you to the dedicated mentors who guided the students throughout the year on their remarkable projects! We are deeply grateful to our generous benefactors, Joe and Marcia Croteau P’03, whose invaluable support has made the Science in Research class a reality.

JANE

MICHALSKI-WILHELM P'13 '15

What inspired you to choose your research project topic, and what did you hope to achieve through your research?

I have always been interested in medicine, and I wanted to do a project that would expose me to more practical lab procedures. At first, I wanted to look at how bacteria can be used to treat other infections, and on further research of the subject area, I learned about the struggles scientists face today with bacteria and decided to focus on antibiotic production and antibiotic resistance.

How do you see the findings from your research contributing to the larger scientific community or future studies?

When testing for antibiotic resistance (checking if antibiotics are effective against bacteria), I was able to compare how affective kanamycin is from ampicillin which just led to further testing of the antibiotics and understanding of how they work.

How did the Research in Science class prepare you for conducting your year-long project? What skills or knowledge did you gain that were particularly helpful?

Simply learning what it meant to conduct scientific research was way different from doing my research paper junior year. It was also helpful to read scientific journals that relate to my topic and understand what I can contribute to that field. I realize that learning how to write a hypothesis and analyze data on Excel are skills that will help me outside the classroom.

What aspects of the Research in Science class did you find most beneficial or enjoyable? How did the class foster your interest in scientific research?

I think everyone having a mentor was beneficial. It allowed us to have one-on-one assistance on our projects, and learn how to build semi-professional relationships, and absorb all the knowledge they had to share. More specifically for my project, I enjoyed using tools I had never used before in my previous science classes (I felt like a mad scientist using the hood!). Although what I want to study in university does not relate to research, the process taught me qualities such as time management, flexibility, openness, and patience, skills that I will carry with me forever.

EMBARKING ON EXCELLENCE: Mount de Sales Academy’s Journey through Accreditation

In August 2022, Mount de Sales Academy began an accreditation Self-Study process, part of a ten-year cycle to assure educational excellence and compliance with standards of good practice. Carla van Berkum of the Alliance for Maryland and DC Independence Schools (AIMS) introduced the accreditation process to faculty and staff in 2022 and worked closely with Mount de Sales leaders over the past two years.

A Steering Committee was formed, and Vice Principal of Academic Affairs Laura O’Friel was asked to lead this committee and accreditation. Principal Sister Mary Raymond reflected on this 18-month process, typically completed over a 24-month span saying,

“Ms. O’Friel expertly guided this accreditation from start to finish. Her phenomenal organizational skills, diligent work, and eye for detail made this entire experience not only achievable, but also meaningful and enriching for us individually, professionally, and as a school.”

The Steering Committee that guided this effort, along with all faculty and staff members, contributed their collective efforts in a variety of subcommittees related to academics, curriculum review, student experience, facilities, finance, admissions, health and safety, technology, and more. We are deeply grateful for all their hard work and dedication.

Accreditation aims to ensure institutional quality, guiding a culture of continuous self-reflection and improvement. Mount de Sales, previously accredited by the Middle States Association, is now seeking dual accreditation with Middle States and AIMS. AIMS is accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools and Middle States.

The process has four phases: internal evaluation, external evaluation by peers, commission evaluation, and self-improvement to meet evolving standards. Accreditation benefits include validity, accountability, high-quality standards, confidential peer review, and continuous improvement.

In March 2024, Mount de Sales hosted a seven member AIMS accreditation team for a four-day site visit. The team observed classrooms, reviewed procedures, and met with various stakeholders, concluding the

Pictured:

rigorous self-study process. Students, faculty, staff, administration, board members, past and present parents all contributed to these discussions.

“What a wonderful school! The Committee was impressed with the commitment to the mission of Mount de Sales Academy. The students were engaging and clearly loved the school. The dedication of the faculty was impressive. It is clear that Mount de Sales is a special place.”

Chuck Stembler - Principal Calvert Hall High School and AIMS Visiting Team Leader

We are grateful for the Visiting Team's service and the contributions of our faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders to this comprehensive review over the past two years.

Karen von Lange P '09 '16 Director of Communications

“I cannot give enough thanks to our Steering Committee and all of the faculty and staff who dedicated two years to accreditation work. With great pride we welcomed the AIMS team to our school in March. These educators are leaders at their own schools who volunteered to lend their expertise and spend four days with Mount de Sales. This twoyear process affirmed the strong foundation of Mount de Sales and provided strategic insights for the next ten years.”

GROWING IN FAITH: My Transformative Experience at Mount de Sales

Until walking through the gates of Mount de Sales, I had only thought of my faith like a seed. Here, I was given the foundation to plant that seed to grow from knowing about Jesus to encountering and knowing Him. Whether it be our religion classes, our monthly Masses and Adoration, the worship Wednesdays before school, or our beautiful retreats, Mount de Sales extends the invitation beyond what we learn in textbooks to experience the true power, mercy, and presence of Christ.

One of these transformative experiences from senior year was Senior Retreat. I was already full of gratitude for the way my relationship with the Lord had grown. While there, I recognized the community of faith I had found at Mount de Sales. Not only has this school brought me closer to the Lord, but it has also brought me friends and classmates who also strive to walk with Christ. During Adoration on retreat, I experienced the power and presence of the Lord as we joined in singing praise and adoring Jesus in the Most Holy Eucharist. This was more than just the seed of faith. This seed of my faith as well as the seeds of my classmates grew and transformed into something beautiful.

“When I think of Mount de Sales and how it has developed my faith journey, it is similar to our chapel here. Since my freshman year at Mount de Sales we have called our chapel “The heart of our

school.” Coming here, I had known of Jesus, I had learned about Him, but the experiences and opportunities from Mount de Sales have shown me that Christ is at the center of my heart. I have realized through Mount de Sales that I want Christ to be the center of my life.”

I will be forever grateful for my education, the countless memories, life-lasting friends, but most importantly, for my encounter with the Lord here because it has been something that has forever changed my life.

A JOURNEY TO Green Gables

Mount de Sales'Captivating Revival of a Classic Tale

Lucy Montgomery’s book Anne of Green Gables, published in 1908, has been considered a classic children’s novel since the mid-20th century. This spring, the Mount de Sales theatre department brought the pages of Montgomery’s classic novel to life.

Taking place in Avonlea, a fictional Canadian town, a young, bright-eyed, red-haired orphan named Anne with an E (Katie Tis) took the audience on a journey through her childhood to young adulthood while navigating the trials and tribulations of growing up on the farm, Green Gables. Katie did an incredible job bringing to life the fanciful, imaginative, overdramatic and often annoying young girl trying to find a permanent family and hoping to grow up to be anything but a redhead.

Alongside Anne, the audience was introduced to Marilla (Rebecca Knapp), a reserved, practical, and rigid spinster, Matthew (Melissa Miller), a shy, but loving old bachelor, Rachel (June Newell), an outspoken, opinionated, long-winded busy body, and Diana (Sarah Shumaker), a rosy-cheeked, happy bosom buddy of Anne. The brilliant sets, props, and costumes rounded out the storytelling magic that graced the stage in March.

The incredible acting, crew, and technical talents were showcased under the expert guidance of the two outstanding stage managers, Colleen Butler and Jo Hill. As the show closed with Anne finding her permanent home, Marilla embracing her “daughter,” Rachel learning to keep her mouth shut, and Matthew earning his wings, all is right in Avonlea on the little farm of Green Gables. In Montgomery’s very poignant words said through her most successful character, “And at this moment, God is in Heaven and all’s right with the world.”

Newell, Director, Performing Arts Teacher

TEACHER of THE YEAR:Jess Nyman

What do you love about teaching at Mount de Sales Academy? What makes this school unique?

I love many aspects of teaching at Mount de Sales but one that stands out is that it makes me feel more connected to my family; 13 family members, including myself, have attended the school. When I think of Mount de Sales, what comes to mind is that we are steady, but we don’t stand still. We are steadfast in our religious faith, our longstanding traditions, and our dedication to fulfilling the mission, while at the same time adapting to the needs of our students, expanding within our campus, and learning how to do, even better, what we already do well.

As a teacher, what qualities do you believe define a Sailor?

The qualities that Sailors exemplify are an ability to think for themselves and be inquisitive, a steady moral compass to act with integrity, and a genuine compassion for others. My students are intelligent, vibrant, curious, grounded, and caring young women. They have determination to learn and achieve their goals, passion for their faith, awareness of the true dignity of every human life, and a desire to serve others with a sincere heart.

If you could share any piece of wisdom with your students, what would it be?

My advice to them is to go out beyond the four columns and thousands of bricks that encase this school and discover what God is calling them to do with their lives. I want them to have confidence in their abilities and not be afraid to ask questions or ask for help. My prayer is that they take the faith they have built upon here at Mount de Sales, along with the knowledge and skills they have attained, and use these to reach their goals. Whatever pathway God is leading them down, be it college, a professional career, marriage, a religious vocation, motherhood, volunteering, or some combination of these, I want them to have the courage to pursue it with joy trusting that God’s love for them is infinite.

Many students admire you. How do you build and maintain these connections?

Connecting with students is an integral component to learning and building mutual respect. The foundation of this connection is showing students that I’m human and fallible, too. I make mistakes and don’t always know the answer to every question but I’m transparent about it. It’s good to be enthusiastic about the topics you’re teaching and even be silly at times. This also helps to build connections, resulting in students being comfortable sharing the things that excite them; their sports, or artwork, hobbies, or even the exuberance of getting their driver’s license.

What is something that students might be surprised to learn about you?

Students may be surprised to learn that my Senior Superlative in the yearbook was ‘Class Mom.’

At Mount de Sales, we have been formed with strong foundations in our education, in our friendships, and in Christ. We have learned what it means to strive for excellence in all that we do, whether in academics, athletics, or the arts. …. We know that each of our lives has a greater purpose, and that this is not reached through perfection, but through love.

Sydney Andrus

Mount de Sales Girl

At milestone moments like this, we take to the practice of reflecting on who we once were, a quick comparison between the ‘then’ and the ‘now’ so we can see how far we have come. I would like to challenge you to make this a regular practice. Not dwelling on the past, of course, but seeing your own progress, appreciating each moment as a grand leap from where you once were.

The fruits, our talents and gifts, have grown at Mount de Sales. Not only does Christ love us, but He transforms us through the gifts and talents He grows within us. God has given each one of us unique qualities that have been cultivated over the past four years. … Whether it's talents in arts, athletics, or academics, we all have reflected Christ in the fruit we have nurtured here and have left our mark on Mount de Sales

A Joyful SCHOLARSHIP CELEBRATION

“Joy is a sign of generosity. When you are full of joy, you move faster and want to go about doing good to everyone.” Saint Teresa of Calcutta

The annual Scholarship Benefactor Breakfast on April 12, was a delightful occasion for our benefactors and their scholarship recipients. The joy was apparent and abundant as benefactors saw the impact of their generosity and students met those who selflessly helped make their Mount de Sales experience possible.

Benefactors received appreciation from their recipients and heard testimonials on the impact of scholarships, past and current, from Sister Mary Madeline Todd ’90 and Emily Kaplan ’26.

Sister Mary Madeline, a Knott Scholar as an MDSA student, succinctly summed up scholarship support. She said, “Can your gift change someone's life? Yes! I stand before you as evidence that your generosity can change more than you and the one who receives scholarships ever imagined. Thank you.”

Emily , recipient of the Colleen McDowell Humanities Scholarship, Semper Fi Scholarship, and the Cookie Harris ProLife Advocacy Scholarship remarked, “I know that I speak for each of my Sailor Sisters that have earned and received scholarships from your deep generosity, that you are helping us to become successful here at Mount de Sales Academy and providing us with a foundation for the future. Thank you for being there for us every school year, you make a difference in our lives.”

Thank you to all scholarship benefactors! You are making a difference in the lives of our students who, like Sister Mary Madeline, will carry gratitude for your generosity well beyond their years as MDSA students.

For information on how you can support scholarships at Mount de Sales Academy, please contact Director of Development, Claire Cohagan, at 410.744.8498 ext. 126 or ccohagan@ mountdesales.org.

CHARTING A COURSE FOR SUCCESS: MDSA’s Path to a Thriving Future

Mount de Sales Academy is charting its course for continued success and sustainability as we approach our second century. We achieve this through regular reviews, often conducted by external and unbiased sources, covering all areas of the school. As you will read in this issue, the school recently completed the AIMS accreditation process. Concurrently, we evaluated the Advancement program to ensure alignment through our focus on admissions and enrollment management, alumnae relations, communications and marketing, development, and volunteer relations.

The Convocation, a large formal assembly held on May 8, was the culmination of a yearlong effort to assess and restructure the MDSA Advancement Team. The assessment was led by Frank Donaldson, president of the Institute for School and Parish Development (ISPD). Mr. Donaldson has a successful track record with MDSA, including support for the recent capital campaign. His unique approach, refined over 30 years in Catholic school development, has been a good fit for our small but committed, economically, and geographically diverse community.

The Convocation was the result of several months of work by the 23-24 Core Team, which led to special invitation workshops. It was an opportunity for our extended community to provide input on various Advancement challenges, ranging from marketing and admissions to development and community engagement.

We are grateful to the 25-member Core Team that did the behind-the-scenes work to prepare for the workshops and Convocation. They helped identify the challenges, supported the workshops by facilitating dynamic problem-solving brainstorming discussions, and recorded the output from those gatherings. They then used this same approach to support the Convocation.

We are thankful to the Core Team and everyone who accepted the invitation to participate in the workshops and Convocation. Together, we will ensure that MDSA flourishes into a third century.

PHILANTHROPY AT FULL SAIL 5th Annual Day of Giving Hits New Heights

Did you follow us this year for our 5th annual Day of Giving? It was AMAZING! On Wednesday, May 15, our alumnae, parents, students, and the entire community came together for a recordbreaking day!

With nearly 400 donors, we have never experienced such united philanthropy in a single day. Our alumnae crushed the Class Color Challenge with historic alumnae participation. Together, our community blew the $110,000 goal out of the water and raised $211,924 for the Cupola Fund!

Your generosity for the Day of Giving was further instrumental in helping us exceed our 2023-2024 overall fundraising goal of $945,000 by 7%. This was critical support as the Advancement Team works toward ambitious goals over the next five years to ensure the continued vitality of Mount de Sales.

Thank you to everyone who supported our Day of Giving. Together, with gifts of every size, we realized giving like never before!

CLASS COLOR CHALLENGE

This Day of Giving, MDSA challenged each class color to see who could raise the most for the Cupola Fund. Friends and family participated by donating in honor of the Sailors in their lives. It was a fun and close competition. In the end, the Yellow Class came out on top, lighting up the cupola and front columns of the 1852 building with their color!

IS THE CUPOLA FUND?

The Cupola Fund is unrestricted annual giving, which means these funds provide flexible resources that can be allocated to MDSA’s most important needs, as determined by the Board of Trustees and administration.

As unrestricted revenue, Cupola Fund gifts help cover the $1,568 gap between tuition and the actual cost of educating a student. Our community donated $517,000 to the Cupola Fund in 20232024, nearly half of which was received on the Day of Giving.

Students come to celebrate the Yellow Class victory!

Thank you to Chris and Holly Brown ’76 P’04 ’08 for their $20,000 Day of Giving alumnae match!

Thank you to Rick and Nancy Foster, dear friends of MDSA for 15 years, for their $10,000 evening match!

A beautiful tradition at Mount de Sales Academy is its family legacy. This timeless bond is shared by grandmothers, mothers, and daughters who have all attended this school.

In the Class of 2024, six graduates proudly continued this MDSA tradition. Among them, Reese Woody stands out as a fourth-generation legacy, graduating 27 years after her mother, 65 years after her grandmother, and 90 years after her great-grandmother.

Class of 1974 50-Year Reunion

In the spring of 1974, graduates lined up on the back porches of Mount de Sales, poised and ready to walk through the windows of the Music Hall. Fifty years later, several of these women returned to Mount de Sales to celebrate their 50th high school reunion. As part of their homecoming, the alumnae enjoyed refreshments in the Padre Pio Library and took a tour of the building, including a visit to the cupola. They were also recognized as honored guests at the 172nd commencement in the Music Hall.

ALUMNA SPOTLIGHT Dr.Angela Croteau Marx ‘03

Twenty-three years ago, as a junior at Mount de Sales, I stepped into a classroom filled with seniors, one other junior, and a brand-new teacher, wondering what I had gotten myself into taking physics. We learned about matter, energy, forces, motion, and optics. I loved this math-based science and two years later, I enrolled at the University of Scranton as a Biophysics Major in the pre-med track. Fast forward two years, and I knew healthcare was where I belonged, but not as a medical doctor. I considered different career options and landed on optometry - a career that would combine my love of math and science with my desire to help others.

I am often asked why I got into optometry. Initially, I struggled to answer that question. I enjoyed helping people and I wanted a career that would be meaningful, but one that would also allow for good work-life balance. However, after reflection, I realized the seed was planted far earlier - back in physics, junior year at MDSA. That newbie teacher was Mr. Posner, and his love of physics changed my life and started me on

my journey into optometry. Twenty-three years ago, Mr. Posner did not know what he was getting himself into at an all-girls Catholic high school, but his excitement for science influenced my thinking and helped to guide me down the road I now travel.

Today, I am a Senior Optometrist and the lead of Pediatric Services at Roberts Eyecare Associates in Vestal, NY. I currently serve on the New York State Optometric Association (NYSOA) as the Treasurer and am a past Regional Trustee and past Local Society President of the NYSOA. I also serve on the Board of the Catholic Schools of Broome County and am the PTO Co-President of All Saints School, where my children attend. Twenty-three years ago, Mr. Posner and I were both wondering what we had gotten ourselves into, and honestly, that is probably still the case. But I know he will keep helping students see the wonders of math and science, and I will keep helping children see the wonders all around – all we must do is open our eyes.
