Letter from the President
S
ummer is supposed to be a time for relaxing and vacations; you know, a break from work. This summer has been anything but that at Mount Dora Christian Academy & Children’s Home. However, it’s rewarding to see improvements, expansions, and forward movement. “Backwards never, forward ever.” Progress comes with hard work and commitment.
Each year brings fresh faces to improve our faculty and staff. Two of the most significant hires are a new Chairman for the Bible Department and a new Athletic Director. Our new Chair of the Bible Department is Cary Hadley. Cary served the West Orange Church of Christ as the Pulpit Minister and prior to that as their Youth Minister. Cary’s wife, Lori, is the Principal of our Elementary School. For the first time in our history, we are blessed with a full-time AD. Jim Nichols comes to us after working at the university level with football coach Tommy Tuberville at Auburn and Texas Tech. Jim brings a wealth of experience to his role and has already negotiated an agreement with Under Armour for our sports teams. Jim’s wife, Haley, joined us two years ago, and was named Elementary Teacher of the Year for 201415. He’s got a tough act to follow! I am excited about all the additions this year, and urge you to read about each of them in this issue. Major building projects are underway on campus, too. Many of you have seen the new Jerome B. Thompson Science Center and Samuels Student Center and the beautifully remodeled Lugar Cottage for boys. There’s a lot of excitement about the new concessions and restroom facility
at the football field and track. This building was made possible through the generosity of the Clarence and Hazel Roberts estate and was completed earlier this spring. Adding to the luster at the ball field is a new Video/Scoreboard standing nearly four stories tall. These two projects are the first phases of the overall renovations to the stadium complex. Our goal is to break ground on a new 8-lane rubberized track and “turf ” field as soon as the money is raised. We still have a ways to go in our fundraising efforts, so I’m asking you to join us in this important endeavor through a variety of giving opportunities. Finally, let me take this opportunity to thank all of you who have kept me and my family in your prayers over the past several months. My wife of almost 49 years, Shirley Arnold Moore, fought the good fight against Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases and went home to be with our Lord on May 31, 2015. I am eternally grateful to all of you for your words of kindness and condolence. The Shirley K. Moore Scholarship Fund has been established in her memory. As a member of the Class of 1965, I can’t think of a better way to honor Shirley. All God’s blessings, James E. Moore FALL 2015

Development Tim Deem, Vice President of Development Benefit Dinners, quarterly appeals, Change for Children, vehicle donations, budgeted giving, and estate planning to name but a few. In addition to food, shelter, clothing, and healthcare, every child living in the Home is also enrolled in the School. The single mothers have needs beyond those listed above, including childcare, advanced education, counseling, and transportation.
Many times donors ask, “Can I designate where my gift will be used?” or “How will my gift be used?” These are excellent questions. The answer is, YES, you can designate where your gift will be used. Some of you will prefer the School, while others prefer the Home. As you consider this, keep in mind we are a very unique organization that encompasses two distinct (yet related) entities. We are both a private Christian school, and a Children’s Home for youth and single mothers; neither of which receives government funding for operations.
The Joy of
Many donors provide us with the flexibility to use their gifts wherever we have the “greatest need.” In light of recent events, I think you would agree that Christian education is more important today than at any time in our country’s history. By reinforcing what children are taught at home and in church, we help make an eternal difference in their lives.
The school’s primary source of revenue is from tuition and fees, yet operates at about 77% tuition to expense ratio. That means 23 cents of every dollar spent to run the school must come from other sources – primarily fundraising. With an annual budget of nearly $6 million, that necessitates a lot of charitable giving. Our goal is to make Christian education affordable for every family that desires to send their child here. By offering scholarships and other forms of tuition assistance, we can accomplish that, but it requires the generosity of many people to make it a reality.
We are grateful for every gift we receive, large or small. God has richly blessed our work for 70 years and will continue to shower us with His divine providence. When making a gift to support our work, please feel free to designate where you would like it to be used. Otherwise, trust that the administration will be good stewards and will spend it wisely to fulfill our mission to “Educate for Life and Eternity.”
The Children’s Home, however, relies 100% on benevolence for its operations. To meet a budget of well over $1 million, we must utilize a variety of methods to generate the necessary funds, i.e.

Children’s Home Rolls Out Website, Video and Facebook Page By Dave Hogan
Mount Dora Children’s Home is finding new ways to share its story. The Children’s Home recently launched a new website and Facebook page and will soon debut a new promotional video. The website, mdchome.org, is the first one in the institution’s 70-year history that focuses exclusively on the Children’s Home. In the past, the Children’s Home shared a website with Mount Dora Christian Academy. Visitors to the new website can learn more about our programs and staff, read about upcoming events, and make donations online. The new Facebook page is the Home’s first venture into social media. It is the best way to keep up with day-to-day happenings and new events at MDCH. You can find our page on Facebook by typing in “Mount Dora Children’s Home.” Hit the “Like” button to receive regular Facebook updates. A new video launched recently for showing at benefit dinners and during church presentations. The video is on the Home’s website and on a newly created YouTube channel. The Children’s Home also provides an email newsletter. You may sign up for free to receive the newsletter by emailing MDCH at development@ MDCHome.org.

Sequoia goes Back to her Roots
By Dave Hogan
One of our Children’s Home residents, 15-year-old Sequoia, got the opportunity this summer to travel across the country and experience the unique locale and lifestyle of her Native American family.
grade student at Mount Dora Christian Academy, where she plays percussion in the band. “The family was more than thrilled that the Children’s Home brought her out for the funeral,” said Eppes. “They were very thankful people.”
Sequoia is from the Apache Indian tribe. When her grandmother died recently, Mount Dora Children’s Home allowed her to travel, along with house parent Rickey Eppes, to attend the funeral. It was held in Whiteriver, Arizona, on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. It was Sequoia’s first time to see her family in nine years. “The excitement of seeing Sequoia going back to her roots and seeing her family was beyond words,” said Eppes. “It was an exciting weekend for her.” According to Sequoia’s family, she and her family are descendants of Geronimo, one of the most famous Apache warriors. Sequoia has lived at the Children’s Home for five years. She’s an eighth-

his summer the Children’s Home Single Parent program families spent the day at Wonderworks in Orlando. The kids and parents had the opportunity to experience “edu-tainment,” a term used to describe the learning and entertaining atmosphere at Wonderworks. From natural disaster simulators to art galleries, the MDCH families had a fun-filled afternoon to enjoy one another’s company. Destany, an 8th grader at MDCA said, “The laser tag was my favorite part; it was just nice to hang out with my friends.” Johnnie Coley summed up the trip by describing the experience as “educational, fun, and unforgettable for our families. We all had an amazing time together!” Mount Dora Children’s Home appreciates all donations that went to fund this experience for the families at MDCH. ount Dora Children’s Home’s Single Parents Opting for Christ program welcomed Wendy and her two children, Jamie and Jarred, in July. Wendy has more than 15 years experience in retail management and has her Associates Applied Science Degree in Graphic Art and Design. Wendy is currently serving as an SGA officer at Lake Sumter State College and recently received an honor of being selected to serve on the Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration Committee where she assists new students enrolling at Lake Sumter State College. Wendy wants to be an Art Therapist and help socially disconnected kids through their hardships. Wendy’s daughter, Jamie, is starting her junior year at MDCA and is involved in service clubs such as Best Buddies and The Way. Jamie enjoys writing and wants to study English in college and become an editor. Jarred is a 4th grader and loves math and science. He also enjoys playing board games on Family Night and uses his imagination to build creations with his legos. Director of Social Services Chuck Shepherd says, “We are very happy to have Wendy, Jamie, and Jarred with us. Wendy is a hard worker, and her children are eager to learn. They have a bright future, and we know they will fit in with our MDCH family.”

M
ount Dora Christian Academy and Children’s Home has been able to touch the lives of many children and families over the last 70 years. Within the last 25 years, one particular person has inspired the staff and students to excel in their talents, live for God, and love one another. Mount Dora Christian Academy celebrates James Moore and his 25 years of service to the organization and the community.
with James Moore
James Moore’s journey with MDCA began when he visited MDCA with his choir group from Alabama Christian University in 1964. While visiting the school, he met his future wife, Shirley Arnold. Shirley enrolled at Alabama Christian College and married James in 1966. James and Shirley moved to Orlando in 1979 where James served as minister of the Concord Street Church of Christ. They enrolled their children, Scott and Tonya, at MDCA. In the midst of his ministry at Concord, James was also the Director of the Spiritual Growth Workshop and Executive Director of Sonquest, a youth rally that attracts youth groups and churches from the Southeast. James Moore began his involvement at MDCA as a parent and 10 years later he was named the 5th President of MDCA. Throughout the last 25 years as President of the organization, James has watched the rolling hills and whispering pines welcome The Nelson Building, The Stultz Media Center, The Harden Early Childhood Center, The Jerome B. Thompson Science Center, the Samuels Student Center and more. Dr. Moore invited the Sojourners to campus, assisted the implementation of the “Change for Children” campaign in the Children’s Home and has supported all efforts to better the school for all students and families. Dr. Moore is an irreplaceable puzzle piece of MDCA. His enthusiasm and love for the school encourages teachers, parents and students to live like Christ and follow their dreams.

Joining the students were nine seniors from the graduating class of 2015 who stood as preschool graduates on that very stage 13 years ago. Preschool Director Lori Hadley congratulated the graduating preschool students and wished the students well in their transition to kindergarten. She was very confident the students are well prepared for the next step. Mrs. Hadley recognized all the preschool teachers and thanked them for their dedication and hard work to their students. She followed her gratitude for the teachers with one to the parents,

Many of the graduates will go on to attend Mount Dora Christian Academy for kindergarten. However those who have chosen another academic path will always be part of the MDCA family! amilies, friends, and teachers gathered on a bright morning in May to watch the 5th grade students at MDCA accept awards, trot across the stage, and turn their tassels to move up to the 6th grade. Head of Lower Schools Mrs. Lori Hadley welcomed all in attendance and cued a video illustrating the transformation of each student from infancy to 5th grade. Physical Education teacher Kelly Hill, Music teacher Leah Richmond, Art teacher Phil McWhirt, and Theater Director Cheryl Abbate awarded students for their exceptional talent and positive attitudes. Mrs. Hadley recognized a number of students for receiving straight A’s over the last five years and students with perfect attendance during their 5th grade year. Every year, MDCA students vote for one boy and one girl to be awarded the Christian Leadership Award. This year two boys and two girls were selected to receive the award due to an undisputed tie. Mrs. Hadley stated, “It was just impossible to break the tie, and the students selected this year deserve the recognition.” The Christian Leadership Award recipients included Rebecca Baker, Madison Yates, Grayson Abraham, and Andrew Ruggieri. This year’s 5th grade superlatives included eight students who walked across the stage sporting yellow honor cords for earning the highest grades in the class. Last but certainly not least, Ella Brignoni received the Student of the Year Award for her hard work and dedication to her studies and participation in drama and dance. Congratulations to all the 2015 5th grade graduates!

he 2014-2015 academic year was definitely one for the history books. The Jerome B. Thompson Science Center gave students the opportunity to learn using the latest technology, the Samuels Student Center provided students with a place to recuperate before their next class, and last but not least, the 2015 senior class was the last group of students to graduate from Christian Home & Bible School. Among this group of athletes, leaders, and scholars, the class of 2015 received more than $1 million in scholarships from local and nationally recognized organizations. Dr. Moore, Dr. Moser, and special guest speaker Pat Burke shared their congratulations with the class of 2015. Dr. Moore stated that although he knew this class was full of “straight A” students, he had some “B’s” he wanted to share with the graduates. Be honest Be dependable Be committed to excellence Be the best you can be Be God’s person Pat Burke, an NBA and International basketball player, reminded the 2015 graduates, “Everything is not always ready, set, go. Sometimes the most important things are ready, set, slow down.” He encouraged the graduates to enjoy life and everything that comes with it. As the tassels turned and MDCA said goodbye to another class of Bulldogs, many students were given awards for their service to their school, commitment to academics, and Christian character. Dr. Moser presented the most prestigious Christian Leadership Award to Kaley Ross and Brock Michael one boy for demonstrating Christlike behavior in their daily walk and attitude. Congratulations to the class of 2015!

Change is Good, Transformation is Even Better
12
FALL 2015
A
fter hours of research and small focus groups among students, parents, teachers, and administrators, Christian Home & Bible School established its new name, Mount Dora Christian Academy and Children’s Home. In the midst of all these revolutionary changes, administrators, faculty, and staff will continue their dedication to the CH&BS mission founded 70 years ago. From the whispering pines and the rolling hills to the new state of the art Jerome B. Thompson Science Center and Samuels Student Center, students, parents, alumni, and the community are excited about this historic transformation. Although the name change may take a while for the community, alumni, MDCA administration, and teachers to get used to, it better defines where MDCA is, who MDCA is, and what MDCA does. Head of Schools Brad Moser explains, “We are located in beautiful Mount Dora; we are a Christian organization bound to Christian ideals and values; and we provide a rigorous curriculum that challenges our students.” The updated school logo including the crest of blue and gold with a white cross embodies the rebranding movement and updated look MDCA needs with a new name. Dr. James Moore, President of MDCA, contributes his thoughts on the name change, “This school
will always be educating for life and eternity, and we wouldn’t be here today without the vigorous work that has been put into this school for 70 years. A new name and fresh logo helps encourage the community to be part of our deeply rooted family and tradition.” During the rebranding process, many familiar items on campus are being updated. A significant change that will provide convenience for the community for a variety of purposes is the creation of two updated websites for the Mount Dora Christian Academy and the Mount Dora Children’s Home. The Mount Dora Children’s Home website encourages visitors to learn more about the Single Parent’s Program and the Group Care program offered on campus. Supporters interested in donating items or funds can contribute to a number of campaigns directly from the website. The fresh and innovative MDCA website allows parents to navigate through a master calendar, keep up with the latest Facebook and Twitter posts, and access student and parent resources directly from the Homepage. In additional to the technoligical advances, The Brackett Gymnasium floor has been refinished and painted to include the new athletic bulldog logo and name. A new 6 x 16 foot sign is deeply grounded at the corner of 13th Ave. and Donnelly to ensure passersby can locate the campus. MDCA is proud to announce the completion of a new scoreboard at the football field. This nearly four story scoreboard will include a 19 ft. wide digital screen to allow businesses to run commercials, students to make announcements, and share clips from previous football games. MDCA also adopted two billboard locations on U.S. Route 441 to shed light on the name change to market the school’s new brand. These billboards with the words faith, character, and achievement, highlight the vision the faculty and the administration have for the future of MDCA - strengthen faith, build character, and inspire achievement. MDCA students have the opportunity to develop their relationship with God, use that faith to practice good moral character, and use their character to achieve success in all areas of their life.

DCA strives to provide its student athletes with top notch athletic facilities and dedicated coaches. This year, MDCA brought on a full-time athletic director to join the Administrative staff. Jim Nichols, an Arkansas native and Harding University graduate, will step in as a full-time athletic director with infinite talent and excitement to improve the MDCA Athletic Program. With previous coaching experience at Texas Tech, Auburn University, Troy University, and Faulkner University, his expertise in recruiting, training, and team management will ensure the success of Bulldog Athletics. Nichols began his coaching career as a high school football and track coach in Georgia. He then took his talents to Auburn University, where he served as Assistant football coach and administrator, contributing to the legendary 13-0 football season and 2004 SEC Championship run. He continued his coaching career at Troy University and also Faulkner University, where he started and developed the school’s football programs. Before accepting the position at MDCA, he worked as the Director of Football Administration at Texas Tech University where, alongside Coach Tommy Tuberville, he helped guide the program to tremendous success. In sharing his feelings about the decision to come to MDCA, Nichols states, “It’s a great opportunity to be here and to be a part of something special like Mount Dora Christian Academy. The future is bright, and so many exciting things are happening now and for the future of Bulldog Athletics. I am looking forward to working with this administration, faculty and student body to see what we can accomplish.” Dr. Brad Moser, Head of Schools at Mount Dora Christian Academy, expresses his excitement for Nichols’ arrival noting, “We are extremely excited about the

leadership and experience that Jim will bring to MDCA athletics. His approach will have a tremendous impact on our campus and throughout the community, and we look forward to watching him take our athletic program to new heights and even greater success.” Nichols has spent the summer bringing in new coaches to the MDCA family, developing a new bulldog logo, and signing a sponsorship contract with Under Armour. MDCA Athletics is proud to announce a new athletic logo that will compliment the rebranding efforts of the school. “We asked parents, teachers, students, and coaches what bulldog they thought best represented the school. The kids loved the fresh look of the new logo. I’m excited to see this program grow, and the new and established families embrace the incredible changes in the athletic program that will lead MDCA in the right direction!”

New MDCA Faculty Greetings! It is my honor and pleasure to welcome you to the 2015-16 school year at Mount Dora Christian Academy. We hope that you feel right at home here on our beautiful 70-acre campus, and know that we are proud you are part of the MDCA family. We are so glad you are here, delighted to welcome back our veteran faculty members, and extremely blessed to have several new team members join our faculty and staff this year. Let’s enjoy the journey as we work together to transform the lives of our students. Many blessings to you,

Remembering
Shirley Moore F
rom a very young age Shirley Arnold could light up any room she walked into with her smile, her beautiful singing voice, and her bubbly personality. Shirley’s contributions as a student and wife of President James Moore will never be forgotten. Her dedication to the school and personal experience in the Children’s Home illustrates the values and mission of Mount Dora Christian Academy & Children’s Home. Always an excellent and popular student, Shirley was Homecoming Queen in her junior year, Valedictorian of her senior class, a cheerleader, and in the Beta Club. Shirley Arnold graduated Valedictorian in 1965 and furthered her education at Alabama Christian College where she met James Moore. After marrying James in 1966, Mount Dora Christian Home & Bible School once again came into Shirley’s life when she and James moved to Orlando in 1979, where James served as minister of the Concord Street Church of Christ. They immediately enrolled their children in the school. Over the years, Shirley’s contributions included attending ground-breaking events, planning and decorating for a variety of school functions on campus, and as one of CH&BS’s biggest cheerleaders, she attended most sporting events. Her legacy will not be forgotten and Mount Dora Christian Academy will recollect the fond memories of a humble and amazing woman.

Alumni Corner
A Letter from President Ronnie Sexton I
Greetings, Alumni!
t is my pleasure to welcome the newest and last graduating class of 2015 to CH&BS Alumni Association! Although the conversion from CH&BS to Mount Dora Christian Academy will be a transition for all of us, we are excited for the future of our school. With the increasing number of alumni, it is important to do our part by supporting the education efforts and students who attend MDCA. We are committed to support our school programs, strengthen our numbers, and become a frequent presence in the lives of MDCA students. By supporting the Alumni Fund, the Alumni Association has sponsored senior class trips, offered scholarship money for online college credit courses given on the MDCA campus, and provided scholarships to Mr. & Miss MDCA to show our love and support for their continued education. We are also the proud sponsor of the Monty Boyd 5K Run that just started two years ago in honor of Mr. Monty Boyd. All proceeds from this event go
toward the rebuilding of our football and track facilities. In the future, the Alumni Association strives to keep in touch with our alumni, and inform you of the transformations occurring at MDCA. To learn more about us and update your contact information to receive the Imagine Magazine, check out our facebook page: CH&BS Alumni. The alumni facebook page will allow us to advertise for class reunions, special announcements, and to securely update your current information with contact information and email addresses. Our goal is to get all alumni added to our email list. This way we can share and spread our news quickly among us all! Check out our website: mdcacademy.org to learn more about the ways you can give to the school and make a difference in a student’s life.
