Letter from the President

A

s I look back over the past twelve months, it is evident that God continues to richly bless Mount Dora Christian Academy and Children’s Home.

Earlier this year we opened the new $2.8 million Thompson Science Building and Samuels Student Center; a state-of-the-art building that will serve students for decades. During the ceremonies, we announced that after 70 years as Christian Home & Bible School, our new names will be Mount Dora Christian Academy and Mount Dora Children’s Home. However, our corporate name will remain Christian Home & Bible School. The rebranding effort has progressed better than we could have imagined. The response from students, parents, staff, and the community has been overwhelmingly positive. A beautiful new sign leads into our campus, and another new one is being mounted on the Social Services building. As part of our marketing strategy, two new websites were launched to enhance our presence on the Internet. Enrollment rose by 13% this school year, due in large part to the efforts of our Admissions Office and the entire MDCA team. This coming spring, we will go through the process of reaccreditation by AdvancED. We anticipate positive evaluation marks to show that we are meeting the high standards of our accrediting bodies. We are anxious to learn ways we can improve to meet our own standards of excellence. Our mission of “Educating for Life and Eternity” is more than just a slogan at MDCA. The goal is to offer a curriculum rigorous enough to prepare students for college, yet personal enough to meet the needs of each individual child. Of greater importance is leading young people into a lifelong relationship with Jesus Christ, and every year many make that decision. It’s exciting to see

our students (and their families) become Christians. In the Children’s Home, the Single Parents Opting for Christ (SPOC) program continues to grow and impact the lives of women who face the challenges of raising a family in a single parent household. One of the mothers has four teenagers, and all have given their lives to Christ. Your support of this program is making an eternal difference for these women and their kids. Continue to pray that God will lead more of them into our care. Plans are in motion to begin construction on the new track and football complex right after the first of the year. The projected completion date is August of 2016; just in time for the start of the new school year. Fundraising efforts are continuing, and we are soliciting your help in this endeavor. Please contact me, or our VP of Development, Tim Deem, to contribute and make this dream a reality for MDCA and MDCH. The holidays are a special time for sharing love with friends and family. As another year draws to a close, let me extend seasons greetings from all of us. We treasure the friendships we enjoy with each of you and pray for a safe and prosperous new year. All God’s blessings, Dr. James E. Moore

T

he holiday season often prompts people to give money or property to charity. If you plan to give to Mount Dora Christian Academy & Children’s Home and want to claim a tax deduction, there are a few tips you should know before you give. For instance, you must itemize your deductions. Here are six more tips from the IRS that you should keep in mind: 1. Give to qualified charities. You can only deduct gifts you give to a qualified charity. Use the IRS Select Check tool to see if the group you give to is qualified. Both Mount Dora Children’s Home and Mount Dora Christian Academy (aka Christian Home & Bible School) qualify.

the item with your tax return.

The Joy of

Giving

2. Keep a record of all cash gifts. Gifts of money include those made in cash or by check, electronic funds transfer, credit card, and payroll deduction. You must have a bank record or a written statement from the charity to deduct any gift of money on your tax return. This is true regardless of the amount of the gift. The statement must show the name of the charity and the date and amount of the contribution. Bank records include canceled checks, or bank, credit union, and credit card statements. 3. Household goods must be in good condition. Household items include furniture, furnishings, electronics, appliances, and linens. These items must be in at least good-used condition to claim on your taxes. A deduction claimed of over $500 does not have to meet this standard if you include a qualified appraisal of

4. Additional records required. You must get an acknowledgment from a charity for each deductible donation (either money or property) of $250 or more. Additional rules apply to the statement for gifts of that amount. This statement is in addition to the records required for deducting cash gifts. However, one statement with all of the required information may meet both requirements. We send these statements to donors prior to January 31. 5. Year-end gifts. Deduct contributions in the year you make them. If you charge your gift to a credit card before the end of the year it will count for 2015. This is true even if you don’t pay the credit card bill until 2016. Also, a check will count for 2015 as long as you mail it in 2015.

6. Vehicle Donations. Special rules apply if you give a car, boat, RV, or motorcycle to charity. If you claim a deduction of more than $500 for a noncash contribution, you will need to file another form with your tax return. Use Form 8283, Noncash Charitable Contributions to report these gifts. We will send the donor Form 1098c as documentation for all vehicle donations over $500. We are grateful for each and every gift received from our donors and supporters. If you have any questions or need more information, please give us a call or consult your tax advisor.

Fall Food Drive Success Around 20 churches participated in this fall’s Tampa Bay Area/Southwest Florida Food & Supply Drive for Mount Dora Children’s Home. The food and supplies collected are distributed to grateful recipients including children in our homes, single moms and their children, and house parents. Thanks to all who participated! Our next food and supply drive is scheduled for February 22-23 in the greater Jacksonville/Northeast Florida region. If your church would like to participate, please contact Dave Hogan at 352-383-2155, Ext. 259, or dave. hogan@MDCHome.org.

Visits from Church Groups!

I

t’s always a blessing when church groups come to visit us at Mount Dora Children’s Home. The trips often involve work projects on campus and time interacting with our youth. Some of this fall’s fun events ranged from boat rides to visiting a corn maze. Several church youth groups visited us this fall, including Stuart Church of Christ; Timberlane Church of Christ, Tallahassee; Northwest Tampa Church of Christ; and Bell Shoals Church of Christ. Thanks for sharing your time and enthusiasm with us!

Palm Beach Dinner Attracts Enthusiastic Crowd

M

ore than 150 guests from churches throughout South Florida attended this fall’s Palm Beach Area Benefit Dinner at the Palm Beach Lakes Church of Christ. This was the first major event in South Florida since 2010 for the Children’s Home, and it was great to see a large and enthusiastic audience. The girls who live in the Thompson House helped welcome guests and serve food. They also participated in a question-andanswer session led by Dr. James E. Moore. One of the young ladies, Athena, who is from South Florida, spoke about her experience living at the Children’s Home. Athena is a junior at Mount Dora Christian Academy. Our thanks to the Palm Beach Lakes congregation for hosting this fall’s dinner and to volunteers at churches from Stuart to Miami along the Southeast coast who helped promote the dinner. Other benefit dinners in 2016 are planned for Montgomery, AL. (Feb. 4), Jacksonville, FL. (April 2) and Tampa, FL. (April 30). To get your church involved in helping promote one of these dinners, or for other information, please contact Dave Hogan at 352-383-2155, Ext. 259. WINTER WINTER2015 2015

News from the Board of Trustees

Dennis Stults

Jack McDonald

Dennis Stults, of Winter Haven, FL, recently stepped down as Chairman of the Board of Christian Home & Bible School. Dennis participated in a variety of leadership roles over his 30 plus years of service. He and his wife, Virginia, have been connected with CH&BS for much longer than that. The Media Center on campus is named in honor of his parents, Gentry and Jeannette Stults. Dr. James Moore said of Dennis, “Dennis is a man of integrity and vision who led CH&BS through some of the most significant projects in our history. We are indebted to him for his devotion to the work in the Children’s Home and school. The future of CH&BS is much brighter due to his outstanding leadership.” Also retiring from the Board is Jack McDonald, of Eustis, FL. Jack has a long association with Mount Dora, dating back to 1951 when he and his three siblings came to live in the Children’s Home. Jack is a graduate of CH&BS who later served as Vice President of Development for eighteen years. Jack and his wife, Beth, are

relocating to Winter Haven, FL. Commenting on Jack, Dr. Moore states, “Jack Mack is a living legend at CH&BS. Our basketball court is named in his honor and he has contributed in countless ways to the success of the Children’s Home and school. He and Beth are prominent parts of our history and will be greatly missed around here.” The Board of Trustees elected John Starling as the new Chairman and Glenn McGehee as Vice Chairman. Starling is a 1981 graduate of CH&BS who joined the Board in 2004. He is the Vice President of Taxation for Correct Care Solutions. John and his wife, Tena, have four children and reside in Nashville, TN. McGehee joined the board in 2014 and is the son-in-law of former CH&BS Chairman, the late Dr. Harold Sutton. Glenn is the President of SouthStar Development in Brentwood, TN. He and his wife, Leslie, have three children. Please join us in thanks for these Godly men and their leadership to our organization.

Remembering Roberta Farley Article???

ROBERTA FARLEY

M

ount Dora Christian Academy said goodbye to a dear friend and loving teacher, Miss Roberta Farley, with a special blue and orange balloon release. Miss Farley devoted much of her life to Mount Dora Christian Academy and Children’s Home. Spending her teenage years in the Children’s Home herself, she loved to spread her love to all of her preschool students. Miss Farley worked at the Mount Dora Christian Academy Preschool as a teacher. She loved to read to the students and help teach songs in chapel. Not only was Miss Farley an amazing person and teacher, she was a vocal University of Florida fan. In memory of Miss

8 10

Farley, former students throughout her 20 years released a balloon on the softball field. Principal of Lower Schools Lori Hadley and Head of School Dr. Brad Moser spoke kind words that were followed by the release of 300 orange and blue balloons. “It was such a blessing to witness our campus family joining together today to honor Roberta Farley. She impacted countless lives during her 20 years of service to MDCA, and her influence will be felt for more many years to come,” said Dr. Moser.

Inaugural Football Team REUNION

O

n Friday, October 9, MDCA celebrated a decade of football and honored those who were the first participants of our inaugural football program. MDCA began its football in program the fall of 2005. Players, coaches, managers, and cheerleaders from the 2005 season were invited to the event, and many brought their families to enjoy a catered meal and fellowship in the dining hall. At the dinner, MDCA President James Moore reminisced about the highlights of that first season, telling the players, “You all were the foundation upon which our program was built, and your legacy continues.” He recounted that first season of 5 p.m. games in the extreme heat as a result of no lights on the field, and how the cheerleaders had to wear sunglasses to be able to see the field and the hill. Following Dr. Moore’s message, Inaugural Head Football Coach Lonnie Johnson spoke to his former players. Alumni joined the current families at the football game. In the message, Lt. Aaron Monkman, who rushed for over 1,000 yards in 2005, said, “I’d like to say that the 2005 team and this school gave me a lot of memories and lessons that have served me well in many aspects of my life. They were things that helped me in

10

college, helped when I was deployed to Afghanistan, helped fuel my need to become a leader and an officer, and most of all helped me as a father.” During half time guests were greeted at midfield by Athletic Director Jim Nichols and Dr. Moore, who presented each with a gift. After half time, some of the inaugural football cheerleaders did stunts on the sidelines and also participated in a music routine that is still performed by today’s cheerleaders. The 2005 participants who attended the reunion were: Coaches: Head Football Coach Lonnie Johnson, Assistant Coach Bill Hamilton, Head Cheer Coach Cindy Brown Players: Jon Bailey, Parker Brown, Lorenzo Durias, Robbie Gailey, Michael Kolozsvary, Jake Sikkema, Jordan Vanderberg, Cornelius Whitehead Managers: Josef Alleyne, Davis Brown Cheerleaders: Ashton Brewer, Kimi Hyde, Amanda (Van Dingstee) Nunez, Jennifer Stubbs, Anna Van Dingstee, Brittney Walls

Mount Dora Christian Academy Launches New Sports Radio Show

M

ount Dora Christian Academy Athletics Department has taken its communication with the community to a whole new level. In October, Athletic Director Jim Nichols partnered with My 790 AM to begin a weekly show that interviews teachers, administration and students, covering the latest athletic news. The hour-long segment titled This Week in Sports at MDCA starts at 7:00 p.m. So far, the show has featured District Volleyball Coach of the Year, Joshua Corder, and student athletes such as cross country runner Gabe Curtis, and volleyball player Cooper Monn. During the 20-minute sessions, the host, Billy Matthews, discusses coaching strategies and successes, as well as training techniques and personal experiences with the athletes. “We are excited about our radio show “This Week in Sports at MDCA” where we can showcase our sports, student athletes, and our school,” says Nichols. “We want our fans and parents to have another outlet to find out what is going at MDCA. I think this is something that we can build on for years to come and give our student athletes another outlet to be heard. There is so much we can do with this show, I think it will get better and better. Right now we are learning week by week and getting good feedback from parents and students.”

Danielle Christopher and Cooper Monn live on the air at the 790AM Radio Studio.

Mount Dora Christian Academy Recognizes Duke TIP Qualifiers

M

ount Dora Christian Academy recognized 29 Duke TIP qualifying students. Duke University Talent Identification Program, better known as Duke TIP, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving talented youth in academics. Duke TIP strives to help students reach their highest potential. To be recognized as a Duke TIP qualifier, students must test above the 95% on a grade-level standardized achievement test for the school. Mount Dora Christian Academy honored 16 fourth and fifth grade students and 13 sixth and seventh grade students with medals and certificates for their outstanding performance on the most recent Measures of Academic Progress

(MAP) test that was administered in October. All 29 students have the opportunity to take an ACT prep test in the spring.

“It has been a privilege to watch this group of students rise to the top through hard work and dedication. I’m expecting big things from them as they continue their academic journey,” said Principal of Lower Schools Lori Hadley. Head of School, Dr. Brad Moser also expressed his excitement for the students’ achievements saying,“We are so proud of all of our students who qualified for this great recognition. As it stands, MDCA students perform at levels as high as anyone else in the nation, and this particular group of Duke TIP qualifiers is leading the way.”

Dual Enrollment

S

tudents seem to be graduating early, deciding majors even earlier, and finding their first real jobs all before they turn 21 years old. Dual Enrollment courses are essential for students to get ahead and experience college level courses before they walk across the stage and receive their high school diploma. Mount Dora Christian Academy offers several dual credit courses right on our campus through schools such as Harding University and Indiana Wesleyan University. In addition to campus-based courses, MDCA also has dual credit agreements with other schools such as University of Florida, Florida State University, University of Central Florida, Lake Sumter State College, and more.

5 Reasons High School Students Should Take Dual Enrollment Courses:

n Dual enrollment credit earns more GPA points n College courses taken as dual enrollment are more affordable n Taking dual enrollment courses provides a head start on earning college credits n Students explore college level topics with teachers they are familiar with and in small classes of their peers n Dual enrollment courses are rigorous academic courses that provide an introduction to college within the supportive atmosphere of high school WINTER 2015

International Student Success at Mount Dora Christian Academy

S

ince 2003 Mount Dora Christian Academy has accepted international students from all over the world. Students have traveled from Vietnam, South Korea, Germany, Switzerland, France, Ukraine, China, The Islands of the Bahamas, Thailand, and Spain. Almost all international students pursue post-secondary

education in the United States. Alumni can be found at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Marquette University, University of Alabama, Duchesne University, University of Missouri, University of Indiana at Bloomington and Lipscomb University. But it doesn’t stop at college either! MDCA international alumni, Inbee Park, is currently the reigning LPGA tour #1 female golfer. During their time at MDCA these students get involved. Students have participated and excelled in extracurricular activities including band, tennis, golf, football, art, basketball, and Pep Rally Committee. We encourage our families who have an interest in hosting an international student to apply. This is truly a rewarding experience! Take the opportunity to introduce a student to the American culture and at the same time, learn a few things from them as well. These students truly become a member of the family, and many of our homestay parents keep in touch with their students long after they graduate.

ount Dora Christian Academy and Children’s Home. This new name reflects everything about our organization; where we are, who we are, and what we do. We remain committed to our founding purpose as a Christian home and school; both in the classroom and around the kitchen tables of our residences. We are fortunate to operate in a very family oriented town that still conducts parades down Main Street, has diners where you can always find a familiar face, and is home to organizations that have been a part of the community for decades. As we begin our 71st year of ministry, our commitment to providing a Christian environment for children lives on. We are committed to the legacy of supporting as many families as possible who desire for their children to receive a Christian education. To achieve that goal, last year we provided $859,729 in scholarships and financial aid. To the left is our financial report for the fiscal year running from July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015. In the charts and the financial statement, you can see how important individual donations are to the continued success of our mission. Sixty percent of our donations come from individuals like you. A building block for educational success

V

oluntary Pre-Kindergarten (VPK) is a free program offered to children of Florida residents who reach the age of four years prior to September 1. The VPK program is overseen by the local Early Learning Coalition office in each county. The VPK program is designed to promote early learning success and provides 540 hours of kindergarten readiness education. Mount Dora Christian Academy is proud to offer VPK as an educational option for new and currently enrolled families. The program uses a rigorous curriculum promoting readiness for kindergarten and focuses heavily on reading and math. Mount Dora Christian Academy currently has three VPK classes taught by certified Early Childhood teachers. The students in the school day program receive art and music classes daily. Principal of Lower Schools Lori Hadley is excited about the addition of the VPK program at the MDCA Preschool and says, “I am so happy that we are able to offer VPK. It has been a help to our current families and will allow us to reach others who might not have considered our program as an option for their family. Any opportunity to strengthen the social, emotional and academic skills of the children in our community should be taken seriously. It will strengthen our present and our future.
