LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT A new year inevitably brings me a sense of enthusiasm. While we always strive to make each year better than the last, there’s something special about what I see happening in 2017. Two promising indicators: enrollment in the Academy is trending up for the third consecutive year, and the Home is at near capacity. Just as importantly, the local community has embraced our rebranding and recognizes that we are making a difference in the lives of children through Christian education and childcare.

But our mission is about more than athletics. We exist to show Jesus to the world. Lives are changed forever by bringing children and families closer to God. In that regard, there is also much to be enthusiastic about this year. Presently, there are thirty eight children and parents under our care in the Home. Three recent grads are at Christian universities and five more kids will graduate from the Academy this spring, all with the intention of continuing their education in college. To top that, one of the single moms just received her Bachelor’s degree while raising three teenage boys. Now that’s something to celebrate!

The final days of 2016 were filled with Christmas parties and other events, but nothing was as exciting as the groundbreaking for the new athletic facility. Many of you can recall when a group of volunteers turned a clay pit into the site for a football field and track back in 1980. It would take another twenty five years before a team was formed and the first game was played. Those early years were a struggle, but they helped to develop the character of our teams while the program grew and prospered. During this same time, the track and cross country teams were flourishing. The boys track team won a state title in 2009, and this year the boys cross country team was the state Runner Up with the state individual Champion. Clearly, the time had come to bring our facilities up to par with our programs. Now we can hardly wait for the completion in late summer!

None of this would be possible without the individuals and churches who generously give to support this work. We receive little to no government funding, and rely on the generosity of people like you to fulfill the mission. With your help, I firmly believe that God will continue to bless the Children’s Home and Academy and enable us to “Educate for Life and Eternity.” Let me extend an invitation to come for a visit so you can share in the excitement!

Dr. James E. Moore President

SOCIAL SERVICES The Joy of Giving Tim Deem, Vice President of Development Many of you are familiar with the thrift shop that we operate for the benefit of the Mount Dora Children’s Home. It’s a great place to send items when you’ve cleaned out your closets and garages of items you no longer need. The Children’s Home gets merchandise to stock our shelves; the children we serve receive the blessings once the items are sold; and you get rid of things you didn’t want along with a tax deduction. Everyone wins! Just like most of us have unwanted stuff cluttering up our closets and storage spaces, the majority of people have life insurance policies they are never going to benefit from. It’s estimated that in the US, there are around 330 million policies with a total value of over $18 trillion. But, over 90% of them will not last until maturity. Of course, that’s how insurance companies make the majority of their money. They collect premiums for years on the policies, but end up paying $0 on most of them. Yes, you read that right. The majority of purchasers allow the policies to lapse. Some sources estimate that less than two percent of term policies result in a death claim.

Let me suggest three ways that you can use life insurance to make a charitable gift to Mount Dora Christian Academy & Children’s Home. Perhaps the easiest method is to name MDCA&CH as the beneficiary on your existing policy. Upon your death, the proceeds come directly from the insurer. Two, you can purchase a new policy with the intention of using it to make a charitable gift. When you sign the policy papers, you transfer the ownership to MDCA&CH, and then make annual, tax deductible gifts to fund the premium payments (either lump sum or over a set number of years). For a relatively small investment, you can become a large benefactor. Three, you can transfer an existing policy to MDCA&CH. Instead of maintaining the policy, MDCA&CH will use a broker to find a buyer for the policy and sell it on the open marketplace for the maximum amount (certain eligibility requirements apply). This is known as a “life settlement.” Donating life insurance is a powerful way to make a larger gift than you might otherwise be able to contribute. If you would like to learn more about using life insurance to help the children at the school and home, please give me a call at 352-383-0762 and experience “The Joy of Giving.” 

Marie Pierre earns four-year college degree Single parent Marie Pierre recently became the first person in Mount Dora Children’s Home Single Parent Program to complete a four-year college degree. Marie graduated in January with a bachelor’s degree in business administration/management from Walden University. She did so while working a job and raising four children, including two who are currently enrolled at Mount Dora Christian Academy, Jasper (12th grade) and Jesiah (10th). “I’m very thankful and will be grateful forever,” Marie said of her time in the Single Parent Program. “It gives me hope for a better future. I used to have low self-esteem, but now I feel more confident.” Armed with her new degree, Marie said she hopes to find a management job in an office or open a business that caters to helping the elderly. Chuck Shepherd, Director of Social Services, praised Marie for her accomplishments: “I am so proud of Marie for 4 | Imagine Magazine Winter 2017

accomplishing this milestone in her life. It has been wonderful to see the effort and dedication Marie has put forth in earning her degree. Her hard work and effort paid off. She has accomplished her educational goal, and I look forward to seeing many great things from Marie in the future.” Helping single parents advance their education and skills is one of the goals of the Single Parent Program. Another single parent, Kim Johnson, recently earned her Director’s Credential for operation of an early childhood center from Lake-Sumter State College. Last spring, Wendy Keith graduated from Lake-Sumter State College with an associate’s degree, and she is now enrolled at the University of Central Florida. 

SOCIAL SERVICES MDCA Cheerleader Marches in London’s New Year’s Day Parade When teachers asked students what they did over the Christmas holiday, few students could top senior Athena Wagner’s story. Athena, captain of the MDCA Varsity cheerleading squad, performed with other All-American cheerleaders from across the country in the annual London New Year’s Day Parade, an event watched on TV by 300 million people worldwide. She was one of more than 8,500 performers representing 20 nations in the three-hour parade which included marching bands, cheerleaders, clowns and acrobats. “It was an awesome experience, getting to be in a parade and in another country,” Athena said. “It was a really cool experience.” Being selected to perform in the famous London parade confirmed that Athena is among the top cheerleaders in the country. Only the top 10 percent of more than 325,000 cheerleaders who participate in summer cheerleading camps sponsored by Varsity Spirit are invited to perform in one of several year-end parades, including the London New Year’s Day Parade, the Thanksgiving Day Tour at Disney World, and similar prominent events in Rome and other cities. While in London, Athena got to tour famous sites including Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace, the London Tower, Big Ben, and more. The only negative for a Florida girl like Athena might have been the notoriously damp and chilly London weather. “It was really cold,” Athena said. 

ATHLETICS Jasper Pierre Signs With Navarro College Senior Jasper Pierre signed with Navarro College located in Texas on National Signing Day. Pierre has received a full ride scholarship to play football for the Navarro Bulldogs. Surrounded by family – his brother Jesiah Pierre, mother Marie and even his older brother Jeremiah via iPhone Facetime – Pierre took the first step in the next adventure in his life. “I can’t say it enough, to everyone in the room.” Pierre addressed the crowded Student Center, “Thank you. Thank you for your support and your encouragement over the last four years.” “We are so proud of Jasper’s accomplishments,” says Head Coach Kolby Tackett. “He has worked so hard, and nobody deserves this more than he does.” 

Two MDCA Basketball Records Shattered Taylor Trudeau had no intention of breaking not one, but two school records in a single game. As a sophomore, he spends most of his time on the court, practicing his shot. Trudeau no longer needs practice after scoring 62 points in a single game and sinking 12 three-point shots against Orangewood Christian. Mark Gordon, a 2016 graduate from MDCA, set the previous record of 60 points during his senior year. “When I warmed up before the game, I wasn’t making a lot of shots. Once the game started, I guess I got everything going,” explains Trudeau. Coach Steven Hayes is excited Trudeau has two more years with the Bulldogs: “Who knows what he can accomplish over the next few years, but I am excited to find out!” 

I am incredibly proud of all that Gabe has accomplished…

Gabe Curtis: Class 1A Runner of the Year Congratulations to sophomore Gabe Curtis for being selected as Florida Dairy Farmer’s Class 1A Runner of the Year! Curtis finished the 2016 Cross Country Season as the fastest runner in Class 1A, crossing the finish line first with a time of 16:17. Gabe is the second Mount Dora Christian Academy student recipient to receive the Dairy Farmer’s Athlete of the Year Award; Mark Gordon received the Basketball Player of the Year award in 2016. “I am incredibly proud of all that Gabe has accomplished on the course,” Coach Zach White begins, “but I am even more proud of the leader he is off the course. I’m so glad that somebody like him gets honored in this way.” 

Girls Weightlifting Added to Winter Sports For the first time in MDCA history, the athletic department added Girls Weightlifting to the winter sports season lineup. This season, the girl’s weightlifting team had five competitors, four of whom won an individual meet. Coach Kolby Tackett was very impressed with the growth of the team throughout the season, “I was really proud of this group of girls for being apart of our first ever weightlifting team. They worked extremely hard and are already looking forward to next year!” 

6th Annual MDCA Chili Cook Off Mount Dora Christian Academy hosted its 6th Annual Chili Cook Off on the MDCA baseball field. With more than 15 competing teams, chili enthusiasts, MDCA families, and the Mount Dora community enjoyed a variety of recipes from classic hearty bean chili to white chicken chili. Between face painting, the bounce house and the DJ playing popular dance tunes, visitors voted for their favorite chili, bid on silent auction items, and participate in a Lucky Chance Raffle. Judge’s Choice and 1st place in the event was Ogden Orthodontics. The visitors of MDCA Chili Cook Off also voted for People’s Choice. The first place recipient in People’s Choice was MDCA Baseball, second place was awarded to Mount Dora Police Department, and in third place, Ogden Orthodontics. Mayor Nick Girone stated that the city and MDCA have a “very long tradition” of working together and “forged a partnership” that is still very strong today. Girone also pointed out MDCA as the largest private landowner in the city of Mount Dora, and stated, “it is

STUDENT LIFE Celebrating Literacy Week Although MDCA’s preschool celebrates literacy and reading every day in the classroom, this year all PK 2 through VPK teachers focused on the Dev Petty book “I Don’t Want To Be a Frog”. The Preschool lobby was decorated with lily pads and in the park, students could get their picture taken in a frog cut out. Throughout the week, students completed frog art projects, built frog habitats and more. On January 25th, a special visitor from the Agriculture and Wildlife Services department read “I Don’t Want to Be a Frog” to all the preschool classes, part of a simultaneous reading that schools and law enforcement officers participate in all over the state of Florida. MDCA’s guest reader brought a gopher frog to share with the class; the students had the opportunity to pet it and see the frog’s exhibit. 

LEADERS ARE READERS! Coach Steven Hayes and Coach Sara Hill’s Leadership classes spend their class time reading to Elementary classes. “I really enjoy getting to connect with the kids and building a relationship with them,” says Junior Cooper Monn. “When I see them on campus, I can give them high fives and hugs!”

Homecoming 2017

Jasper Pierre & Athena Wagner

Mount Dora Christian Academy’s 2017 Homecoming ceremony combined the Hawaiian "Ohana" theme with the elegance of an evening beach to announce this year’s Homecoming Court in January. Representatives were introduced while a Hawaiian sunset – painted by 2016 graduate Cape Monn and junior Cooper Monn – stood in the background. After announcing the court, senior emcees, Christian Abbate and Emily Post, announced Homecoming 2017 King and Queen Jasper Pierre and Athena Wagner. Pierre and Wagner were crowned by the reigning 2016 Homecoming King and Queen Jeremiah Pierre and Leah Germain. 

STUDENT LIFE State Beta Presidents 2 Years In A Row

MDCA ♥ MDPD Mount Dora Christian Academy Preschool students took a trip to the Mount Dora Police Station to deliver Christmas gifts. The preschoolers sang Christmas carols in the lobby of the station and presented a handmade ornament to each police officer. MDPD officers also received a personalized “MDCA ♥ MDPD” coffee thermos and a coupon for a free donut. The police officers thanked the students and gave them a tour of the station. 

The MDCA Senior Beta Club shared their talents and club accomplishments at the State of Florida Senior Beta Convention, held at The Caribe Royale in early January. MDCA took 45 students and brought home 13 awards in a variety of categories, including robotics, colored pencil art, Spotlight on Service, show choir, and advertising. MDCA is proud to have students serve back to back years as the State of Florida Senior Beta President. Senior Christian Abbate gladly inducted junior Emily Leto to serve as President for the 2017 year.

Like a circus, Beta is overflowing with talent and passion. “My campaign was all about how Beta is the Greatest Club on Earth," said junior and State Presidentelect Emily Leto. “Like a circus, Beta is overflowing with talent and passion. God has blessed each person with a unique skill set, whether it be acting, dancing, singing, mathematics, engineering, or speaking. Beta’s mission is to take all of these talents and connect members with one goal: to lead by serving others. I had an incredible time at the Florida Sr. Beta 2017 State Convention. Thank you to my wonderful school and club, and to my amazing sponsors, Mrs. Elenz and Mrs. Abbate, without whom I could not have done any of this. I can’t wait to take on Nationals, and am so excited to help lead the next convention.” “This is the most success that Senior Beta has had at state convention,” said MDCA and State Sponsor Anne Elenz. “Exciting times for our school with Beta as we continue to go “Above and Beyond” which is Beta’s theme this year.” 

ARTS Unity in Harmony: Elementary Chorus A reflection from Elementary Chorus Director Leah Richmond In our elementary chorus, we have 31 students. They are a very talented group of students whose strength lies in their ability to blend together. Many singers are able to be very amazing by themselves, but true musicians know how to work as a team. That is what makes our elementary chorus so truly wonderful. They are a great bunch of students, who work together well. They may come from different places, like different foods, like different hobbies, but in music they are united. Their ability to blend and add their own individual strengths to the group is amazing. They have reached levels of musicality that have left even me with tears in my eyes and my jaw hanging on the floor. I could not be more proud of them. One of my favorite quotes is “when words fail, music speaks.” These students, as a group, are able to speak to people on another level because of their musical abilities. 

FINANCIAL SUMMARY Kent Means, VP of of Finance Mount Dora Christian Academy & Children’s Home constantly strives to improve every facet of our ministry. Standardized test scores of the students at MDCA are surpassing those of others in the state and country. Likewise, in the Home program, single moms are completing college and preparing to re-enter the workforce. It’s an exciting time to be a part of preparing them to go out into the world. As I look back over my 21 years of employment, I can’t recall a time of greater optimism about the future for these children and families.

What is most unique about MDCA&CH is the generous support of individuals and churches who share in the mission. Several years ago, a donor - who was nearing the end of her life - refused to reside in one of the luxury retirement facilities in the area despite her considerable wealth. Her goal was to save as much money as she could to educate the children at MDCA&CH. What an incredible lesson for our ministry; a lesson that propels us to provide Godly stewardship for every donation we receive.
