50 Years
MESSAGE FROM
6 PRESIDENTS, 3 CEOS “The building is only as tall as the foundation is strong enough to build on it” Despite its 50-year history, the honour board at Mounties holds only the names of three Chief Executives and half a dozen Presidents. Here, we pay tribute to those who have lead the vision of Mounties; the same vision that saw a renovated hospital army hut evolve into a state-of-the-art entertainment complex at the forefront of the club industry.
The President F
ifty years ago, a group of young men rallied to meet the needs of the community. Now, half a century later, their vision to create a club where community could be at the forefront has stood the test of longevity and meaningfulness. Mt Pritchard & District Community Club – or Mounties as we all fondly know it – is celebrating its rich past and counting down to an even brighter future.
We have seen tremendous feats achieved throughout our history – on the sporting field, on the stage and in the boardroom. We are a tight-knit group, full of pride. Our sense of giving back has seen us contribute more than $50 million to community groups and charity in the last 10 years and it is our goal to surpass this figure in the next decade. I’d like to make special note of our staff, whom aim to provide our Members and guests with exceptional customer service and that feeling of being at ‘home’ that is not easily replicated. I hope you take a sense of ownership from this milestone. If you haven’t visited for a while, I urge you to come to Mounties in April. We’ve planned a month-long calendar of activities, giveaways and promotions so that our 50th birthday is as special to you as it is to us. Thank you for being a part of this milestone,
RAY PUGSLEY TED SAVAGE
President 1978-1981 & 1983-1998
TERRY WHITE
On a highly competitive landscape, I believe it’s been our Members who have distinguished us from our competitors. The Mounties club has been blessed with approximately 70,000 loyal members who hold similar values to our own and while the club offers each one of us something a little different, it’s our sense of community that ensures we are one and the same.

T
his month marks the 50th anniversary of Mounties.
Crucial to Mounties’ success is that the Club has remains as relevant as ever. Competition for the entertainment and leisure dollar in our local area has never been greater. We can’t rest on our strong history and therefore, our Board of Directors and management have focused more recently on diversification. At Mounties, we are partway through a multi-year, multimillion-dollar masterplan which will see your facilities once again at the forefront of our industry.
History reveals sport as being at the core of Mounties’ DNA. Our sports stars continue to shine on the semiprofessional stage, while Mounties’ spirit is equally represented by 29 sub clubs which operate with the financial, administration and in-kind support of the Club.
But while we invest in the future, it’s the same principles that Mounties was founded on that guide our decisionmaking and fuel our vision of connection people with community.
The other key ingredient in our organisation is community. Mounties prides itself on a staunch commitment to the community it serves. We don’t aim to simply support the community, we see ourselves an important part of the community.
The Mounties story is one which continues to unfold, and I am delighted to have good cause to take stock of what Mounties has meant – and continues to mean – to our local community.
The 450-odd men and women who work at Mounties do so knowing they are employed by a unique business, able to offer generous community support. Each year, our staff give their own time and funds to add to the recognised charity events and community contribution program which the club supports under the guidance of the Board of Directors.

Once upon a time…
A STROLL DOWN MEMORY LANE T
he concept to build a club that supported the social and sporting needs of the community was originally sparked by a group of friends enjoying a drink in a hotel in Cabramatta in 1968. Two humble government huts were hauled by road from Herne Bay (now known as Riverwood) and anchored on 1.2 hectares of land in Meadows Road, Mt Pritchard.
April 2, 1968 was the most momentous day in the history of Mount Pritchard and District Community Club. The birth of a club with a heart that beats community and is now the lifeblood of thousands of members across Sydney. As the population of Mt Pritchard grew, the necessity for more leisure and sporting activities increased. After multiple renovations from 1987 – 1990, and with an ambitious masterplan currently coming to fruition, Mounties has continued to naturally evolve. It now houses four restaurants including the 300-seat Cantonese Restaurant, Johnny Fong’s, two cafes, a dedicated sports bar, outdoor playground, Ignite Fitness Centre, and several specialized services including Minis childminding, iTravel and Flamez Hair Dezign.
momentous highlights, including the opening of the first two extensions by former Prime Ministers Gough Whitlam and Bob Hawke and by Federal Member for Fowler at the time, Ted Grace. Mounties was also awarded the prestigious Club of the Year award in 1995, 2005, 2007 and 2009, confirming that the Club was moving in the right direction, supporting and listening to its community.

There are few major licensed clubs in Australia that are as interconnected and committed to the community as Mounties. From offering a destination of choice for Members and their guests to nurturing local athletes to reach their aspirations and awarding millions of dollars each year to local charities, the Mounties ethos has always been based around giving back to the community. Looking at the Club today, the area that it commands and the millions of dollars of support it has provided to the community indirectly and directly through ventures such as its ClubGRANTS program and its 29 Sub Clubs, it is difficult to imagine its humble beginnings. The success of the Club has largely been due to the members, staff and community of Mounties, and the spark that turned a vision into reality, which will continue to burn brightly for many years to come.

Sporting sub-clubs, one of the biggest parts of Mounties’ history and culture, form the heart and soul of Mounties. From cricket, darts, golf, lawn bowls to rugby league and soccer, Mounties has supported both social and sporting activities since the 1960’s. The first sporting clubs of the area were rugby league and cricket, both formed in 1927. Some of the most notable cricket players were the White brothers, Mortimer (Mitta) and Joe, who became the club’s first president and inaugural committee member respectively. Over the course of its impressive 50 years, there has only been three long-standing chief executives at the helm; Mick Dubois, Vic Smith and Greg Pickering and six presidents – Terry White, Ted Savage, Robert Ryan, Ray Pugsley, Clive Edwards and current president, Kevin Ingram. During this time, Mounties has achieved some

ON THE
Sporting Field Sporting Sub Clubs formed the heart and soul of Mounties when there was only a tin shed and a will to achieve the best possible outcome. A mandate was set to form a club as there were limited facilities for local community members to enjoy sport and social activities. As a result, Mounties Group today is home to 29 Sub Clubs providing a diverse range of activities for members to participate in. This year, several Sub Clubs including Junior Soccer, Rugby League, Table Tennis, Cricket, Social Golf, Euchre, Fishing and Netball celebrate 50 years on the sporting field. The race for excellence has no finish line. Mounties continues to provide pathways to the highest levels of elite competition. Sport continues to grow within our membership and so too does the Club’s commitment and involvement in the sporting arena, with millions of dollars of support it provides to the community and its Sub Clubs.
Cricket was one of the first sporting clubs of Mt Pritchard, established in 1927. Some of the most notable cricket players were the White brothers, Mortimer (Mitta) and Joe, who became the club’s first president and inaugural committee member respectively. The Cricket Club grew quickly responding to the growing number of boys in the district who wanted to play. From 1990-92, for the first time in Club history, Mounties Cricket won the A Grade premiership 3 years in a row.
RUGBY LEAGUE Mt Pritchard Rugby League Club played its first games at Cook Park in 1927. Disbanded in 1932, the club reformed in 1937, only to have to abandon the competition again during WWII. In 1946, the club started up again, playing at Eastes Estate - which was surrounded by the Mulga bushes which inspire the Mounties catch-cry, “Up the Mulga!”
Over the years, the Mounties cricket team has been home to several sporting legends including Michael Clarke, former captain of the Australian cricket team. Clarke, a batsman of great talent, played for the under 15 and under 16 teams in the late 90’s. Today, Mounties Cricket Club provides the most number of teams at both junior and senior level across the district.
The Mt Pritchard Community Girls Netball Club was founded in April 1968 by Norma Smith, Margaret Shannon and Joy Wilson who liaised with Mounties Director John Whiteley to establish what is now the Mounties Netball Club we know today.
Mounties Rugby League Club currently competes in the NSW Cup, Ron Massey Cup and Sydney Shield. Mounties is the current feeder club for the Canberra Raiders.
On 1 March 1969, Mounties Junior Soccer held their first committee meeting. The boys’ teams played under Southern Districts Soccer Association and the girls under the Young Ladies Sporting Association. Mini Soccer was introduced in 1982 consisting of smaller goal posts and only 6 players. The club currently comprises of mini, junior and senior teams. In 2017, Mounties Junior Soccer had 50 teams in total with 27 competitive and 23 mini or small sided teams. There were 23 Semi Finalists, 15 Grand Finalists and 7 Minor Premiers. With over 650 registered players and 130 coaches and managers, Mounties Junior Soccer is now one of the biggest clubs in the association.

TABLE TENNIS Foundation member Don Saunders recalled putting together the club’s first table – ‘a home-made table in an old shed’ - before Mounties had even received its liquor licence. In 1974, there was growing concern that the lack of members may force the extinction of the club. Luckily, numbers picked up towards the end of the 1980’s. In 1994, Mounties brought home the prestigious Quinlan Shield (a top-class competition consisting of indoor bowls, darts, snooker and table tennis) for the first time. Since the inauguration of the Shield, the Mounties Table Tennis Club has grown in numbers and has produced elite Table Tennis players including the likes of Kiet Tran and John Tawadrous who have competed at national and international levels.
Mounties Fishing Club enjoyed great success until about 1972, when membership started dropping until there were just 9 members left in 1974. Those members formed a committee and slowly re-built the club. Today, the Fishing Club is a championship winning club, being the current title holders of the Inter-Club Competition. A focus on juniors, with adults supervising and instructing young fishermen, continues to be of importance to the club.
NETBALL
As a breeding ground for several outstanding players of the modern game, many talented rugby league players have worn the black and gold colours including Arthur Summons, Bob O’Reilly, Geoff Gerard, Brad Fittler, Shane Shackleton and Tony Williams.
In its first season, the club had seven teams and played at Green Valley in the Southern Districts Young Ladies Sports Association. In 1969, the Club joined the Liverpool City Netball Association (LCNA) who were then playing at Woodward Park in Liverpool.
SOCIAL GOLF
JUNIOR SOCCER
FISHING
Current Director Tom Murphy arranged Mounties’ very first Social Golf day and barbecue at the request of his father, ‘Spud’ (Arthur), in 1962. Golf became one of the most popular Sub Clubs during the 1970’s with 47 players attending the Dunheved outing in May 1970 to play for the Ernie Moore and Merv Pell trophies.
EUCHRE Euchre began soon after the establishment of Mounties in 1968. The competition was led by Fred Schirk every Wednesday night in the hut. As a result of constant club expansion, Euchre became known as the mobile game as it was forced to relocate numerous times.
The Netball Club formed its first Executive Committee in 1971 which ran the Netball branch of the Mt Pritchard Community Girls Sports Club. Netball fielded 17 teams that year and has at times had up to 35 teams. In 1981, the decision was eventually made to split the Mt Pritchard Community Girls Sports Club, with Netball forming as an individual Sub Club. Over the years there have been many achievements by the club. Mounties has produced great players including Julie McCartney, Donna Avery, Suzanne Brown and more recently Ashley Valeni. These players and more have represented Liverpool City Netball Association (LCNA) who compete at the State and State Age Championships against all associations in NSW.
In 1999, the Mounties Dolphins were formed to represent Mounties in the Western Districts InterClub Euchre Competition. The club finished runners up in 2010 and 2011 and went one step further with premierships in 2014, 2016 and 2017.

Living happily after…
SHAPING THE FUTURE Like the saying goes, like a fine wine, Mounties just gets better with age and if you haven’t visited the club in a while, then you’re in for a big surprise on your next visit. 50 years have gone by, memories have been made, opportunities seized, sporting records broken and the club is still renowned for pouring cold beers, nevertheless in a revolutionised 21st century “hut”. Over the years, we have been working on accommodating the changing needs of our community. While at the same time keeping alive the heritage, value and memories that Mounties was founded on. As a result, we have formulised a Redevelopment Masterplan. The plan guides a multimillion dollar renovation strategy aiming to solidify Mounties’ position as a premier destination for dining and entertainment in Western Sydney. Mounties is now home to an impressive line-up of restaurants welcoming flavours from all around the world. The first dining hot spot to migrate to Mounties was Bau Truong. The Vietnamese restaurant opened its doors in 2014 offering authentic Vietnamese food, inspired by the old Saigon markets where head chef and owner, Bac Cang originated. On 8 December 2015, Mounties unveiled the new Humphries Road foyer and porte cochere; a spectacular state-of-the-art arrival zone, the scale and sophistication of which is appropriate for the largest club in South West Sydney. This zone, now also accommodates a new Member Services office and the Gift & Bottle Shop stocking a multitude of brands including Gucci and Guess, fine wines, toys, jewellery and much more.

A number of local dining favourites will see themselves landing a spot in what is yet anticipated to be Western Sydney’s finest dining hotspot. Over the next few years, Mounties will create an intergenerational community asset that combines living, dining, entertainment, fitness, wellbeing and childminding all in one place. The increasing population and infrastructure in Greater Western Sydney has presented Mounties with a spectacular opportunity to develop a landmark hotel. The anticipated five-star boutique hotel will feature luxury hotel rooms accompanying a restaurant and meeting spaces. Through the combination of simple, considered design and luxurious quality, the hotel will offer visitors a truly unique haven to call home.
In addition to the dining precinct, Cantonese restaurant Johnny Fong’s opened its doors in February 2017, offering customers an authentic yum cha dining experience. This 300-seat dining venue boasts majestic gold and orange lights, dark furnishings, striking red highlights and private dining rooms to create the authentic Chinese experience. 2017 also saw several minor refurbishments take place. Emperor’s Buffet is donning a new look after indulging in a slight upgrade, its contemporary outlook comprising of additional seating and new amenities.
The Future Gaming Floor
The Sports Bar More exciting times are still ahead, as further changes of the redevelopment will see the refurbishment of the gaming floor, a three-level underground carpark, and an exclusive food and beverage precinct.
The club has come a long way since its humble origins, and the road has been a continuous and rewarding journey. None of this would have been possible without the unwavering support of our loyal members, the local community, management and employees at Mounties. We appreciate your patience at this time, and hope that you all come in and enjoy the facilities that we are providing – they’re for you, after all! A big congratulations to Mounties on your 50th Birthday this year. I started my journey at Mounties and it is a place where you can achieve absolutely everything”. Chloe Esposito - Gold Medalist Modern Pentathlon Rio Olympics 2016
The NSW club industry is testament to the old adage – from little things, big things grow. There is no better example of that than Mounties, a club which began life in two makeshift government huts and over half a century became a Sydney icon. Mounties now leads the way with its pioneering club developments and amazing support of worthy charities, as well as sporting and community groups. On behalf of everyone at ClubsNSW, I’d like to wish the board, staff and members of Mounties a very Happy 50th Birthday.
Congratulations to Mounties for reaching this significant milestone, making 50 years of support and contribution to our local community. I congratulate the many people who have come together to create, develop and maintain this vibrant community club that has made, and continues to make, a difference for the better in our area. I send my best wishes to President, Kevin Ingram, Group Chief Executive Officer, Greg Pickering, the Board of Directors and management team. We are indebted for their professionalism and commitment.
The Mt Pritchard & District Community Club holds a very special place in our local community. This year we celebrate that Mounties has provided a safe, social space for the community for 50 YEARS. Whether it be on the sporting field or in business, over the past 50 years, Mounties has continued to lead the way. These days, Mounties contributes millions of dollars of support to community organisations and its Sub Clubs, ensuring that the local community stays well serviced. Congratulations to current Chairman of the Board Kevin Ingram, CEO Greg Pickering, the Board of Directors and the staff of Mounties who have contributed to making Mounties the place it is today. $ Mounties Group is proud to announce Chloe Esposito, the first Australian to compete and win Olympic gold in the Modern Pentathlon, as the newest addition to the Mounties family. As an ambassador, Chloe captures the sportsmanship and communal values that are emblematic of the Mounties Group brand and brings with her a wealth of knowledge and experiences to connect and inspire community members. We spent a few moments with Chloe recently while she was competing in the Pentathlon World Cup in Cairo, Egypt. What does the Modern Pentathlon entail? The Modern Pentathlon combines fencing, swimming, show jumping, shooting and running into one event where competitors accumulate points. You claimed Australia’s first medal in the Modern Pentathlon when you won gold at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Describe the moment you looked up at the scoreboard and saw that you had won gold. The moment I won Gold was absolutely amazing. Such a special moment and one I had dreamt of my whole life. You were the youngest Australian female modern Pentathlete to compete at an Olympic selection event in 2007. Did missing out on Beijing as a 15-year-old motivate you in preparation for Rio? At 15 it was so exciting to be in Tokyo competing for a place in the Beijing Olympics. I felt so sure I would make it, but nothing goes to plan, and I had a terrible horse ride. I was so young I think that helped me not be too affected. And as the saying goes “get back on the horse” no pun intended! You were recently announced as a Young Change Maker for the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) by the International Olympic Committee. What does this role entail and how do you think you can inspire them on their sporting journey? I am so proud to be the Young Change Maker for Buenos Aires 2018. I will enjoy being a mentor for these young people, talking, providing advice, celebrating and even being a shoulder to cry on. Your primary association with Mounties was when you were involved in the swimming club. Describe your experience with the club as a junior. My experience with Mounties began with swimming when I was 5 until about 13 or 14. My favourite memories were of race nights in the club. I loved getting on my Mounties swimmers and racing against other kids in the club. Also, once a month after Saturday morning swimming all of us would go to the club for “A Big Breakfast”. I loved the buffet!

What has been the greatest moment in your career? Oddly the World Cup in 2011 or 2012 was my greatest moment in my eyes. I came 5th against the very best athletes in the world. At that moment it hit me – I was going to win a Gold Medal one day! What does the future hold for Chloe Esposito? I am aiming for my third Olympics in Tokyo. The trials are on next year. I am living and training in Budapest but will be returning home once a year.

To find out what mothers really want, we questioned the Mothers of Mounties both staff and members - and the results weren’t too surprising. Time emerged as a high priority for most Mothers, quality time and time off!

Another added “I’d like to be pampered for a day and spend it with my family not worrying about any additional motherly duties. So, no cleaning, the beach having lunch”. So, let’s face it there is no don’t need to break the bank this Mother’s Day, whatever you decide, it’s the thought that counts and surely mum will appreciate it! EMBARK ON MEDICAL CAREERS Fairfield student Victor Ly will be following in the footsteps of his grandfather and pursuing a career in medicine, with a little help from Mekong. Victor and fellow applicant Casey Thuy Nguyen, from Canley Heights, each received $10,000 as the successful recipients of the Mekong Mounties University Scholarship. Now in its third year, the scholarship is awarded to two students from the local Vietnamese community who have overcome low socio-economic and disadvantaged backgrounds to achieve academic success by lessening their expenses as they continue to pursue their higher education. Applicants must have attained an ATAR of at least 90 in their HSC, and they must also achieve in areas outside of academia, such as community volunteering.
back to the Vietnamese community through my medical profession.” Casey will remain in the area to for her tertiary studies, pursuing a Bachelor of Paramedicine at Western Sydney University. She said she is honoured to receive an award that is dedicated to encouraging the success of the Asian community’s youth. “I encourage every aspiring student to apply, because this is a chance to make their voice heard, as well as having the backing of a great organisation for life,” Casey said. “I am incredibly proud and excited to be introduced to the growing Mekong Mounties family. They have offered me their support and trust, which makes me more determined to keep pushing and working hard so that I can make my dad, my family, and myself proud.”
Victor said that he and his parents were overjoyed and grateful when they heard he would receive the award.
Mounties Group President Kevin Ingram said it was an honour to support young community members.
“The grant will greatly assist with the cost for my university accommodation,” he said. “I can finally relieve the financial burden on my parents, who have already given so much to me.
“The Scholarship rewards the heart of our community, and we are pleased to contribute to their educational betterment,” he said.
“I am honoured to receive the award, and it will serve as a constant reminder for me to continue studying diligently in university, so that I can contribute
Bruce Ly, Chairman of the Mekong Advisory Committee, presented the scholarship awards on February 24 at the VCA TET Festival at Fairfield Showground.
