MOUNTIES GROUP | 2018 Annual Report | 3
Sports Director's REPORT It has been another busy year especially with Mounties Group celebrating its 50-year anniversary. It is an achievement that all Sub Club members should take pride in as the club itself was built to support the social and sporting needs of the community.
This year, several Sub Clubs including Rugby League, Junior Soccer, Cricket, Netball, Fishing, Social Golf, Euchre and Table Tennis celebrate 50-years on the sporting field. The 2018 year has been very successful in sport with numerous Sub Clubs participating in finals and grand finals, well done to all. Mounties Group Sub Clubs have always been an advocate for several community initiatives and this year is no different. A new program titled ‘Try Time’ was introduced by Jenny McNevin, Narelle Mostowyj and members of the Junior Rugby League Sub Club for children, teenagers and adults with special needs and intellectual disabilities who are interested in playing Rugby League. It was put forth to the Sports Committee through Jenny McNevin and then submitted to the Board whom unanimously supported the proposition. The program was so successful that it has gained interest amongst other clubs in the area. It is so rewarding to see these players enjoy the game. The Try Time team Coaches Graeme and Tony showed great support and encouraged every player throughout the season. Other Subs Clubs including Men's Lawn Bowls also showed their community support through partaking in various campaigns such as Bowls for Bales in support of the country's drought relief initiatives. The Stewart House is another organisation profiting from donations of sporting equipment and clothing from numerous Mounties Group Sub Clubs. Thank you to all who have been ambassadors for Mounties Group over the years, without your efforts as volunteers this would not have been possible.

I would also like to thank the members of the Sports Committee; Tom Murphy, Leon Hansen, Jenny McNevin, Dawn Kelly, and Lyn King for all their efforts and support in the past sporting year. Over the past year or so our sister club on the Northern Beaches, Harbord Diggers has undergone a major refurbishment to become the first state of the art intergenerational living complex. Thank you to all the Subs Clubs on the Northern Beaches for your patience and support throughout the development process. The annual Sub Club presentation is coming up on 26 October at Club Italia and I am looking forward to another fantastic night recognising the greatest achievements from 2018. Finally, I would like to thank everyone for their support this year and wish you all goodluck for the 2019 season.
LORRAINE DEAN Sports Director
club captain's REPORT It’s time again for the yearly report, where has this year gone!
Sport is a game of competition and for this reason there are winners and losers in every game. However, sport shouldn’t be about whether you win or lose but about the challenges and experiences that we learn from the game that help us grow. Our Sub Club members have had a great year creating memories and making new friends with new members. The Terry Jackson Shield was back this year and it was two days of great fun with eight teams (combined) competing in the four indoor sports. Again, this year we have had some members pass away. Our thoughts and prayers go out to their families and they will forever be remembered.
I would like to express gratitude to the Board of Directors and Sports Committee of Mounties Group for all their efforts during the year, it is much appreciated. I would like to give a big welcome to our new Sub Club officer Omega Octavia and thank her for all her hard work and efforts since joining us this year. Thank you to all the Sub Club members for your support and friendship throughout the many years in sport, and for many more to come. Yours in sport,
DAWN KELLY Club Captain
MOUNTIES GROUP | 2018 Annual Report | 5
A WORD FROM OUR CEO Congratulations on yet another successful year in sport. The fact that we have so many members representing Mounties in their various sporting pursuits is a ringing endorsement to the fact that the club is actively involved in “connecting people with community”.
2018 saw another significant contribution to sport totalling $3.32m. More than half of that amount was spent on grass roots sport, played by amateurs, on local sporting fields. Mounties is well known for its efforts around the support of sport at all levels, and whilst we do participate at, or near the top of many sports, it has been our focus to provide all our representatives a pathway to the top, if that is their interest. Of course, we have a responsibility to support our members and their sporting goals. That is one very important way we engage with them. In many cases the financial commitment is the greater part of our support for sport, however, at many levels we also provide operational support. Our Sports Administration Manager, Rugby League Coordinator and Football Coordinator are all part of that support, and I congratulate and thank them for their efforts. I should also acknowledge the commitment of the many mums and dads who volunteer their time to facilitate the playing of sport by all manner of players, who, I have no doubt would also thank them for their efforts.

Sport continues to grow within our membership, as well as grow our membership. It’s a big part of Mounties ongoing success. EVERY YEAR, MORE THAN 2,500 MOUNTIES MEMBERS PARTICIPATE IN MORE THAN 25 SUB CLUBS. It’s that commitment which underpins the great success that Mounties enjoys in its local communities. We’re here to give you the best opportunity to play sport at the highest level you can. Congratulations and thanks to all who have been a part of the journey over the past year. Particularly, Club Captain Dawn Kelly and Assistant Club Captain Lyn King, who have provided great support to Sports Director Lorraine Dean and her fellow members of the Sports Committee. These people have unselfishly given their time to ensure that Mounties remains relevant in sport. Lorraine has consistently managed sports administration at Sub Club and Board level for many years now. On behalf of the members, thank you Lorraine and your team for the combined efforts over the past year.
GREG PICKERING Chief Executive Officer

cricket mounties Cricket Season 2017-2018 has come and gone, and it was a very exciting year for the Cricket Club as we celebrated our 50-year anniversary (1968-2018).
All junior and senior teams made the semi-finals. Unfortunately, the under 12’s, 4th Grade and 6th Grade teams all lost in the grand finals.
Sydney Shires ● 1 st Grade made it back to back premiers ● 5 th Grade Tim Greer Cup also won the premiership for the 1st time. At our Junior Cricket Presentation the special guest was Australian fast bowler Josh Hazelwood and at the Senior Presentation we had fast bowler Sean Abbott as well as former players Lenny Pascoe and the great Dug Walters. Fifties Plus Mounties It was another great year filled with trips, adventures, experiences and laughter!
September 2017 Leisure trip down to Bowral. Once we were there we visited beautiful gardens full of tulips.
October 2017 Our first stop of the trip was at the Nurrangingy Reserve for morning tea. The Nurrangingy is a bushland reserve of more than 84 hectares and offers picnic and barbecue areas, children's playgrounds, bush walking tracks, formal garden areas, the Chang Lai Yuan Chinese Gardens, a water splash area, picturesque lake and water spray. After Nurrangingy we continued to Windsor where we hopped aboard the Hawkesbury Paddlewheeler to cruise through the Hawkesbury River. We enjoyed a delightful lunch whist being entertained by some musicians.
November 2017 Cherry season had begun and so this month we headed to Limekilns Cherry Farm at Bathurst to pick cherries. On the way there we stopped at Queen Elizabeth Park for morning tea. After a few hours of picking had gone by, we then headed to Panthers Bathurst for lunch.
which are also being restored. It was a wonderful day out exploring the town.
April 2018 This month we set off to the Wombeyan Caves. The Wombeyan Caves are caves that have formed in marble, in the Wombeyan Karst Conservation Reserve, New South Wales. The caves are a maze of underground passages, streams, and caverns and are also a reserve for endangered species, such as several species of wallaby, bird, possum, and wombat. On the way to the caves we stopped at the Taralga Hotel for a delicious lunch.
May 2018 In May we went on a 7-day holiday to Melbourne where we visited the Yarra Valley, Dandenong Ranges and Phillip Island. This region, located to the east of Melbourne, can be divided into two separate areas - the Dandenong Ranges, where Melbourne's leafy eastern suburbs meet the mountains and forests, and the Yarra Valley, Victoria's oldest wine region.
December 2017
We had an orientation coach tour of the inner city and a range of sightseeing activities including a Yarra River Cruise, rode the Puffing Billy through the Dandenongs (The Puffing Billy Railway is a 2 ft 6 in narrow gauge heritage railway in the Dandenong Ranges) and saw the little penguins on Phillip Island.
Our last event of the year was a celebration of the Fifties Plus 23rd Birthday and Christmas Party.
June 2018
January 2018 We started off the year watching two shows, Wizard of Oz and Beautiful, both fantastic shows.
February 2018 This month we visited a little town called Morpeth. Morpeth is a suburb of the city of Maitland in the Hunter Region of New South Wales which used to be the main river port. It is home to National Trust-listed colonial buildings and a fascinating heritage walk that includes the famous bakehouse where the Arnott’s family biscuit dynasty began. We had plenty of time exploring this little town.
March 2018 The stage show Mamma Mia was our first outing in March. The second was the historical mining town of Joadja, now in ruins, in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Australia, in Wingecarribee Shire. Joadja still has a lot of original buildings,

It was a Sunday well spent on the T.S.M.V. Gunnamatta cruising from Cronulla to Audley exploring the Port Hacking River beautiful waterway.
July 2018 Our Christmas in July trip is always a festive day out. This year went to Battai Barn, a dance hall offering roast-meat set menus, plus live bands and bush dancing.
August 2018 This month we visited the Elizabeth Farm in Rosehill which is a Historical estate and museum featuring a colonial bungalow with a verandah and 1830s-style garden. We also visited the NSW Lancers Memorial Museum in Parramatta. There are many colourful and interesting relics being preserved in the Museum. They include uniforms (some of which date from last century), equipment, saddlery, weapons, photographs, paintings, banners, trophies, etc. It’s always good to learn a little about our history.
September 2018 Wildwood Gardens at Bilpin in the Blue Mountains was our first stop this month, where we always get greeted with a wonderful morning tea before viewing their extensive gardens. We then headed to Mount Tomah Botanic Gardens for lunch. Getting there early gave us a chance to stroll through the gardens. It was a picture-perfect day. Our club tries to make everyone feel welcome. Holidays can
be paid off in installments, making it easier for many people to come along. If there is anyone wanting to join the club, please contact Pat Soulie on 02 6904 2372. Our meetings are held on the first Sunday of each month starting at 11.30am., except September due to Father’s Day.

sENIOR goLF Mounties The Seniors Golf Club has had a great year in 2018 as our membership numbers have increased from last year.
It was a struggle to play on the fields this year as many golf courses had little or no grass because of the dry weather. Although that didn’t discourage any of the golfers, they played in any conditions. We played our game away at Calderwood for our Country Cup down south coast in February and we had 32 players staying at Warilla Sports Club overnight. The winner for the day was Les Pittman.
The A Grade Championship scratch was won by Rodger Stuart, he just keeps on winning, the handicapper hasn’t caught up with him yet. Runner-up was our treasurer Alen Gallard. The B Grade Championship scratch was won by Rick Easom and the runner up was Derek Phillips. Every year the Golf Club holds the Chris Murphy Memorial at Royal Fairfield Golf Course playing the Canadian Two-Ball event. Both Derek Phillips and Peter Rae won this event.
We were lucky the course and the greens at Calderwood where in magnificent shape.
The A Grade Championship nett winner was Rodger Stuart and the Runner up was Jeff Taylor
Our point scorer award for the year was won by Derek Phillips. Derek proves that the older you get the better player you become! Derek is 85 years young still playing like a teenager!
The B Grade nett winner was Derek Phillips and the Runner-up was Rick Easom.
We played four rounds of match play games. The winner was Rodger Stuart and runner-up was Peter Rae. Our two-ball championship which was played over four rounds proved Terry Smith and John Codner as winners. They led all the way and could not be beaten, bearing in mind Terry is our handicapper. Runners up were Aub Gibbs And Rick Easom.

hOCKEY Mounties 2018 was a big year for Mounties Hockey Club. A new President was appointed and we would like to thank the outgoing President Jacqui Fletcher for the work she put in to build the Club.
2018 was another year of growth with the club fielding 14 teams in all. With growth come new challenges, especially with multiple teams at various age groups and how to best grade or select for that challenge. It’s a nice problem to have and shows that we are going from strength to strength. As a new President, I would like to thank all those experienced hands on the Committee who have helped with advice and history as how we do things and why. I would also like to thank and welcome the new faces to the Committee. From a club perspective, Mounties had a brilliant season fielding teams from U7 to seniors. 7 of those teams made it through to their finals series and 4 of those went on to play grand final games. Mounties won the first 3 finals of the grand final weekend. What a Friday night that was, U15 Junior, U18 Girls and U18 Boys all in one night; A fantastic clean sweep! Our A Grade ladies fought valiantly the following day in their final but eventually succumbed to tough opposition. Still, 3 wins from 4 in a finals series is a fantastic result. Once again our dedicated bunch of coaches and managers worked tirelessly this year. In particular I would like to draw attention to four junior coaches who stepped up to coach for the first time this year. Angie Smith coached our U13 Gold, Aleksa Stamenkovic our U13 Black and Jemma and Hayden Murray who coached our U9 Black team. It’s great to see our older juniors stepping up into the coaching role. To play hockey we need officials and I would also like to thank our umpires who made themselves available so that we can all play this game we love so much. Thank you to Jade Callander, Frank Hirka, Abbie Moss, Daniel Moussa, Sebastian Moussa, Carson Plumridge, Angie Smith and Blade Williams. Also a big thank you to the umpires who assisted us with our busy schedule; Karen Lynch, Lisa and Ash Clinch, Travis Cartsens and Laura Thompson. One of the great aspect of playing hockey at Mounties is the fact that we play all our games at the same venue; Macarthur Hockey Complex in Narellan. It’s great that we can support other age groups and that younger players gain more experience by helping out or playing up into the higher ages. Parents love it too as they only have one venue to go to each week.

To list all the achievements of our many talented juniors and seniors would take a book in itself, but suffice to say we have had players represent at nearly every age group in representative teams at association and state level, from our brilliant young U11's who competed for Metro South West Hockey Association (MSWHA) at the U11 development carnivals, to representation at school level (both regional and state). So many of our juniors competed at State Championships for MSWHA from U13's through to U18's. Finally, just to highlight the depth of talent we have at the club, I’d like to point out the following players who represented in State or National teams this year. I think a great example of how much talent we have at the club is the fact that at the U18 Outdoor National Championships this year 8 Mounties players attended. To have players selected into 1 Australian Championship Carnival is an outstanding achievement.

This season we saw Mounties Netball Club field 28 teams in the 2018 Liverpool City Netball Association (LCNA) Competition which commenced on April 7. The 28 teams comprised of 5 Netta-ball, 16 Junior, 2 Senior Cadet and 5 Senior teams. Our Club achieved great results this year from our Netta-ball teams to the competition teams. The 7 and 8 years Netta teams played non-competition games, had lots of fun whilst at the same time learning and improving their basic netball skills with the NetSetGo program. The two 9 -year-old teams played full competition rules, although did not officially score (but I am sure all the parents and coaches knew how many goals each team scored) in preparation for competition games in the following year. In the competition teams, from 10 -year old to seniors, we had 13 out of 23 reaching the semi-final round at the end of the season competition. By grand final day, which was held on Saturday 8 September, we had 7 teams competing. A fantastic result from all the teams over the season and congratulations to the 3 Premiership teams, 2 who were undefeated.
We would like to congratulate the following Mounties Netball Club players who represented LCNA at the 2018 NSW State Age Netball Championships held July 7-9 at Liverpool City Netball Association (hosting the Championship division): 12 Years – 6th Place - Unique Pritchard 13 Years - Champions - Karoline Fasavalu, Fausita Hehea & Lindsay Tui 14 Years - 2nd Place - Ana Kailahi & Jamin Tikeri with Dayla Tikeri (Assistant Coach) 15 Years - Undefeated Champions - Anastasia Afoa with Ashley Valeni (Assistant Coach) Karoline Fasavalu was voted MVP for the 13 years LCNA representative side. During the season the following players were members of a squad that participated in carnivals leading up to State Age. 11 years Development Squad; Emily Barkho, Tamyra Smith and Annie Tui with Co-coach Debbie Brown and Manager Leah Brown. We have also had 3 of our regular umpires successfully obtain their National C umpires accreditation this year. As a result, we would like to congratulate Kayla Brown, Sarah Cantero and Gabrielle Mangion.

Rugby League Mounties Mounties Rugby League for 2018 is now complete in what was deemed to be a successful year for the club. The main aim for the Mounties RLFC in 2018 was “to be the Rugby League Club that every Rugby League person wants to be at.” The aim was to attract both players and officials to the club and make this a great place to play at now and in the future. After the successful season in 2018, Mounties is well on its way in achieving this goal.
This year the club fielded teams from U6’s through to U23’s, Girls League Tag, Try Time, Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership, Jersey Flegg, Ron Massy Cup and Intrust Super Premiership. In 2018, Rugby League could not be stronger within Mounties. All teams competed outstanding on the field.
Pickering for their continued support of Rugby League.
In the Junior Rugby League, 19 teams competed in the Parramatta District competition. 6 teams competed in the final series with 4 making the grand finale. Under 14.2’s won the Premiership.
To all of the above mentioned, you people make Rugby League survive at Mounties. Your hard work and dedication over the years ensures all players take to the field each game.
In the Senior Rugby League, the four teams made the final series with 3 out of the 4 finishing in the top four. The Ron Massey and ISP made week 2 of the final series, the Jersey Flegg were one game off the Grand Final and the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership team won the Premiership against South Sydney 12-10 at ANZ Stadium. Finally, there are a lot of people that need to be acknowledged for the successful year. Firstly, Mounties Group President Kevin Ingram, Board of Directors and CEO Greg

jUNIOR Soccer Mounties In 2018, Mounties Junior Soccer celebrated its 50th Anniversary. On 1 March 1969, a group of seven committee members including Harry Turner, Warren Watts, Brett Purkiss, Wally Barnes, Evie Lawrence, Glad Sherman and Maurice Lawrence banded together and Mt Pritchard and District Community Soccer Club was born.
Today half a century later, Mounties Junior Soccer has grown to become one of the largest and most respected Soccer Clubs in the district. As we look towards the next 50-years, the Club is poised to evolve and grow because of the founding members initial passion and ongoing persistence to uphold a soccer tradition and give soccer a permanent home in our community. At the end of this 2018 season, we had four Minor Premiers and two Premiers. From the 27 sides that could participate in finals we managed to have 15 sides progress, which is a fantastic result. From the 15, we had six sides progress through to the grand final. Unfortunately, we could only manage two premiership sides from this. Whilst the outcome was not always in our favour, the spirit and sportsmanship shown by our players was a credit not only to the Club but to themselves.
Congratulations to the following award winners: ● Michael Di Maria (U12 MVP and Golden Boot Runner Up) ● Hussain Jaffar (U13 MVP Winner) ● Anthony Martino (U15 MVP Winner) ● Muhammad Kasem (U15 MVP and Golden Boot Runner Up) ● John Haddad (U17 MVP Runner Up) ● Ammar Kasem (U18 MVP Winner and Golden Boot Runner Up) ● Jessica Martinez (L18/21 MVP and Golden Boot Winner) ● Natalie Martinez (L18/21 MVP and Golden Boot Runner Up) ● Antonio Pavez (U21 MVP Runner Up and Golden Boot Winner) ● Daniel Berti (U21 Golden Boot Runner Up)

STATE LEAGUE SOFTBALL Mounties Our State League Season is looking strong this year commencing in August with the final scheduled for the last week in October. Mounties are currently sitting in the middle of the ladder with four games to go.
Mounties State League Softball Club had a bittersweet end to the 2017 year with the final series of the State League competition being washed out due to inclement weather unfortunately leaving Mounties to finish in the top four of the competition and not be able to contest the title.
Mounties then competed in the 2018 Winter League Competition. Fielding a young side, our most experienced player in the team was 17 years old. The players fought hard every week and proved that we have a bright future in the years ahead with a lot of talent coming through our ranks.
However, this didn’t deter our players with Mounties having a stellar representation in our 2018 NSWSA Men's Team across all age groups.
Congratulations to Jarred Garlands who got selected into the 2018 Junior Steelers team to compete for Australia at the 2018 WBSC Junior Men's World Championships in July. Australia dominated on the field and broke the 10-year drought to bring home the gold medal. Jarred displayed great skill and ability bringing out a solid performance each time he took the field.
Mounties was represented in the U17’s age group by players Jeremy Garland, Hayden Shaw and Ethan Field with Dave Garland appointed as Assistant Coach to this team. Amazing performances from our Mounties players with Jeremy on the mound, Ethan behind the plate, and Hayden leading the outfield. NSW came away victors of the 2018 National Titles as Ethan was presented with the Player of Final award. Next up saw a strong representation in our Open Men's Team with Nathan Dickinson, Mitchell Brownlow, Lachlan Hay and Jayden Lach all representing the Blue Bloods down in Canberra in the Open Men's titles. The NSW team put on a strong performance throughout the tournament. In a hard-fought final, NSW proved to be too strong for the reigning champions with ACT winning the title in a nail biting seven innings game.
Mounties State League and our members would like to thank Mounties Group for the support it receives each year for the players. Knowing that we have the backing of the club eases some of the burden placed on these players and enables them to achieve their goals of representing both their state and country. Yours in Sport
PETA WAKEFIELD Secretary
With two titles in the bag, our last team to compete were the U19's Men's team, where Mounties had a strong representation with Jarred Garland, Blake Jackson, Logan Campbell, and Daniel Harrison all earning a position in the team. NSW were unable to fend off the strength of the QLD team in a hard-fought battle, going down to the wire to lose with a seventh inning home run to QLD. Whilst the title may not have gone NSW’s way, Jarred Garland had a stellar tournament not only taking home the award for the Best Batter of the tournament but also the award for Most Valuable Player and earning himself a spot in the national team.

table tennis Mounties Mounties Table Tennis Club (MTTC) 2018 AGM was held on 19 February with the re-election of the 2017 Executive Committee and the appointment of Steven Duong as second Vice President.
MTTC entered One D Grade team, One B Grade team and One A Grade team for the TTW Summer Competition. Great results were achieved with the D Grade team as they just made it as runners-up. The B grade team won their group and the A Grade team narrowly missing out on a spot in the semi-final. The follow-up TTWS Winter Competition saw our victorious B Grade team move up to A Grade and finding it challenging this time round. Our D Grade team moved to C Grade in company of an additional formed and entered C Grade team. Both teams are doing well occupying second and fourth position at this stage of the competition with five weeks to go to the semi-finals. Our other A Grade team is well placed in the competition at fourth place. The Mounties Invitation Table Tennis Tournament was held from 20 - 22 July this year. MTTC were able to attract several local, interstate and overseas players that provided Mounties members and guests with excellent entertainment over the three days, showing off their table tennis skills. The tournament displayed Men and Ladies Singles and Doubles.

Following this exciting event, Mounties Club Championship took place on 18 August. This event was well attended with a full 32 player draw Men’s Singles and 16 players draw Men’s Doubles. Regretfully, there was only one lady's single entry which was pretty disappointing. Perhaps 2019 will show great improvement on this number. The Men’s Final took place with Kiet Tran and Son Lam Dang. Son Lam Dang coming up the 3:1 Winner over Kiet Tran. Kiet Tran then joined forces with partner Tin Ngo to face strong opposition of Fady Bahnam and partner Dejan Bajic. Kiet and Tin running out the winners again on this occasion. All to look forward now, the final games of the TTWS Winter Competition and the MTTC Christmas and Presentation Night scheduled for 15 December 2018. Please note that this presentation is a MTTC function only. TTWs will have a separate function this time round.

toastmasters Mounties 2018 has been a very active and successful year for the Toastmasters Club as a result of members’ achievements in the educational program and speech contests, the introduction of pathways, and an increase in membership renewals.
My gratitude to all previous Club Presidents and Committee Members who have helped build a solid foundation for our Toastmasters Club. On a sad note though, Nadia, a long-time member of our club for the past 8 years is unable to commit to future meetings due to other commitments. Nadia is extremely grateful for how much the club has helped her and in return we’ve appreciated greatly all her efforts for the club over those years. Our Toastmasters Club connection with Mounties as a Sub Club is of enormous privilege to Sara and myself. We joined many other Sub Clubs celebrating Mounties 50th anniversary in fine style on 7 April this year.

It has been a great pleasure witnessing and supporting members achieve their personal goals. Well done to all who have taken part in competitions, some for the first time! You rock those nerves out! Best wishes for a successful year to our incoming President Sylvia and her team.

wanderers football mounties This season has been very challenging for the club although we had been set for a massive season in bringing to Australia a Scottish Ex-professional footballer Kevin Harper on a twoyear contract as the clubs Technical Director and Head Coach of Football.
The aim was for Mounties Wanderers to win promotion from the NPL 2 Competition into NPL 1 in 2019. The season started off well until April when Kevin was forced to return to Scotland for family reasons. At the time of his leaving 1st Grade was in 4th position. Our U20’s in 3rd position and the U18’s in 1st position. To be promoted to NPL 1 you must win the Club Championship in NPL 2. The more wins in the 3 grades the more points towards the Club Championship.
tremendous effort from the squad to get so close. Unfortunately, the U20’s finished 4th and U18’s finished 7th.
After a rocky first half of the season the club turned it around and finished 4th in the Club Championships.
Again in 2018 the Club has a terrific retention rate of players in all grades.
Our 1st Grade went from 12th to 6th place into the semi-finals then onto the grand final beating North Shore Mariners 1 - 0. The following week they won against Mt Druitt in the Minor Premiers 2-1 after coming from behind 1- 0. Into the grand finale against St George FC we were down 2-0 at half time. Mounties fought back to 2-2 at the end of the game. Extra time saw Mounties up 3-2 with 4 minutes left on the clock and St George scored to make it 3-3. The game went into a penalty shoot out and we were beaten 4-3. A
Our SAP again improved this year and after travelling north, south and out west in winter at zero degrees, all the junior players and parents had a terrific season.
Our Youth League worked hard all season and after 30 rounds of playing NPL 1 and NPL 2, Mounties finished mid table in all grades. Youth League do not play for competition points and it makes it difficult to gauge players consistency every week.
Thanks to all the Coaches and Managers in the Youth League and SAP teams. Also, to our SAP Coordinator Sharleen who has nerves of steel.

Women's Bowling harbord diggers We have now been playing bowls at Manly Bowling Club (our Sister Club - also known as "Diggers on the Park") since February, 2016, whilst our new club is being completed.
Saturday 30th June was a very special day, celebrating the official opening of Stage 1 of our new Harbord Diggers Club. Several of our ladies joined many other patrons to enjoy the festivities and admire the magnificent new Club. Completion of Stage 2 is under way, included in which is our new bowling green. We are all looking forward very much to returning "home" next year and we are sure that the beautiful facilities will attract new members to our club. We are a very friendly club and, apart from all enjoying the game of bowls, we support and care about each other. We entered a Grade 4 Pennants team and, whilst there were no winners, we thoroughly enjoyed competing and meeting up with members of other clubs within the Manly-Warringah District. We joined the Manly ladies on their annual Charity Bowls Day, proceeds from the day going to the Manly Women's Refuge. A fun day for a very important cause.
(Director, Mounties), Pam Hansen (Harbord Advisory Council), Phil Brannigan (Harbord Advisory Committee), Joan Finlay (Harbord Advisory Committee), plus of course, our wonderful bus drivers who transport us to and from the Diggers each Tuesday and Thursday. Thank you also to all the very courteous staff at the Diggers. Bowls is a sport for all ages with so many advantages – it suits people with varying degrees of fitness and sporting capacity and of course, as it is an outdoor sport, it is a very healthy activity and also a good way to keep fit. It is also a wonderful opportunity to meet new people and form strong friendships.
MARGARET MACHON Secretary
On Tuesday 21 August, our President Marie, and myself, together with two Manly ladies - Maggie and Dawn - were invited to attend Mounties' WBC President's Day for Kath Whitely. We thoroughly enjoyed the day and were made very welcome by the ladies. Our Club organises theatre parties and it is nice that some of the Manly ladies have accepted the invitation to join us at the shows. Since our last report, we have seen "Beautiful", "Wizard of Oz" and "Book of Mormon" and Sunday, 18 November, we will be seeing "Jersey Boys". A big thank you to our much-loved Patron, Betty Campbell, for her wonderful support and for her continued sponsorship of the Patron's Trophy. We would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the following people who have supported us throughout the year: Lorraine Dean (Sports Director, Mounties), Leon Hansen

CRIBBAGE HARBORD DIGGERS The winner of the prestigious Roy Perri Trophy which is the culmination of all the points accumulated for the whole year for 2017 went to Pat O’Sullivan, with Tony Richard coming a close second and Jo Gibbs coming in third. Well done everyone. I am sure there will be a few new faces all vying for the trophy this year.
The Cribbage Club relocated to the Nelson Heather Centre at Warriewood from 2 November 2017 and will be able to return to the Diggers on 25 October 2018. It has been rather a difficult year for us as most of us had much further to travel and we could only play cribbage three weeks each month as the room was occupied by another group on the fourth week. However, we were most grateful that the Northern Beaches Council could accommodate us, and we did have many wonderful nights of playing cards with most of our members supporting us at our new venue. We still managed to run our competitions with Pat O’Sullivan taking out first place in the Summer Round, Malcolm McGregor coming second and Betty Bevins coming in third. In the Autumn Round, Tony Richards came first, with Pat O’Sullivan second and Val Boulton coming third. In the Winter Round, Jim Mitchell came 1st with Barbara Aikenhead, Shirley Ellis and Bridgitte Grover all tying for second place. We are just now commencing the final round for this year, the Spring Round, so no points are being posted yet.

Our President Jim Mitchell has resigned after many years of running the Club so expertly so we must thank him for his innovative and progressive ideas. We are also welcoming our new President, Jane Thompson, who I know will be a wonderful asset to our Club. We are hoping that we may be able to interest a few new members to come and join us when we get back to the Harbord Diggers Club. We can arrange refresher courses for those that may have played many years ago but would like to take it up again. If anyone is interested in joining us on a Thursday night at 6.45pm at the Harbord Diggers Club, please phone Pat O’Sullivan on 0402 840 410 or Jane Thompson on 0411 383 171. You will be most welcome to join our little club which will be celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

toastmasters daytime Harbord diggers Once again, we have enjoyed a very successful year. We have watched from a distance the progress of the beautiful new Digger’s Club on Freshwater’s Headland and will welcome our return to it mid November 2018. We have maintained our membership of keen Toastmasters, and we look forward to introducing our newer members to the new Harbord Diggers Club.
We enjoy seeing our eclectic group of members every first, third and fifth Thursday morning of the month. The “buzz” before we start and at morning tea is an indication of the delight we find in each other’s friendship and the Toastmaster journey. We have spurred each other on in our public speaking endeavours, table topics, evaluations and contests. One of our newer members joined with the goal of being able to make a speech at her son’s wedding. She was an absolute “hit” and has in a short time become a confident speaker. Others are in their own business or branching out into their own business which requires confidence in speaking. One member is a newly published author and needed to overcome a fear of public speaking. There are others among our 28 members, confident and competent speakers, who enjoy continuing to speak and mentor others. We have a wide age group ranging from the 30’s up to the 80’s. For new residents who have recently moved into The Diggers, you are most welcome to attend as a visitor to experience a Toastmaster Club. There are two Toastmaster Clubs to choose from at Harbord Diggers, one daytime and one evening. We, as the daytime club, meet on the first, third and fifth Thursdays of

toastmasters evening Harbord diggers It’s been an exciting year for Harbord Diggers Evening Toastmasters with a change of venue, lots of new members and many interesting, entertaining and moving speeches as well as great educational sessions and evaluations.
We were delighted that Mounties could offer us temporary accommodation at the Manly Bowling Club while the Diggers re-build took place. The staff at Manly have really made us feel welcome and we’ve enjoyed the $12 steak/fish dinners on Tuesday evenings. However, we’re really looking forward to returning to Freshwater in our brand-new meeting room in November. To get us in the mood we even held a social get together in the new Diggers this month - such a stunning, sophisticated club we have now. Our member numbers have been steadily growing this past year with several visitors attending every meeting and many of them deciding to join Toastmasters after just one session. Each new member is assigned a mentor who is an experienced Toastmaster who guides them through the preparation of their first speeches and other assignments. We have such a supportive environment at the ‘Dynamic Diggers’ and members are always offering advice and cheering each other on as they tackle more adventurous roles. Just some of the wonderful speeches we’ve heard in recent months included: Mike fine-tuning his Groom’s speech for his upcoming wedding, Nick entertaining us with the tale of teaching his daughter to drive, Renee sharing the delights of grandmother duty in the school holidays, Grace speaking about the increasing problem of social isolation, Garry talking about re-discovering his identity after a career change, Michael encouraging us to discover the joys of diving into our beautiful oceans and Mariel talking about how she is overcoming her shyness through Toastmasters. We also had a few laughs with our Rants, Raves & Reviews, our impromptu speaking sessions (a one-minute speech on a random topic), Humorous Speech Contest and themed meeting nights for Christmas and the Melbourne Cup.

There are also many opportunities to hone our leadership skills by chairing meetings, taking on executive roles such as President, Treasurer, Secretary, Vice Presidents of Education, Membership and Public Relations. Toastmasters gives so much back to its members and the community and is an important educational and social outlet for many. We are so grateful to the Mounties Group and previously the Harbord Diggers Club for their continued support with a wonderful venue, administrative assistance and club grants. It’s been a rewarding partnership for over 40 years and with the imminent move back to our Freshwater home we look forward to many more years as a Sub Club of Harbord Diggers!

Men's Bowling Manly bowling club 2018 has been a building year for the Men’s Bowling Club. We pride ourselves that we are the ‘friendly club’ at Manly and we have seen six new bowlers join in the last few weeks, so we are very positive for 2019 especially if the new synthetic green arrives in time for the Pennant Season.
We have seen a few men leave in search of better greens, and some leave in search of trophies, but the true crew have stuck together. It’s true our greens were very poor for the duration of the year but there is light at the end of the tunnel and we may see a new synthetic green soon. Our Pennant Season was strong, our Grade 3 side were just the one win, 5 points shy of the Zone 9 playoffs and our Grade 5 side made the section playoff only to go down to a very good Harbord outfit. Our Grade 6 players were a bit green but played very well throughout the year, they still managed to turn up and have fun. We managed to attract 18 teams for our Mixed Pairs event which is still ongoing as is the Triples event. Our Singles champion is Tony Moss who overcame Allan Old in a great game. Our Men’s Pairs champions were David Baker and Graham Lewis who were too strong for Allan Old and Jeff Boyd. The Men’s Fours have just completed with Graham Lewis, Will Falconer, Tony Moss and Ricky Ford all claiming the winning title. Tom Larter is the 2018 Minor Singles Champion and Jason Hardman won the President’s Singles event. Manly were again runners-up in the Harkness and the Waterman’s at Mosman, maybe the win is for next year. We would like to thank Mounties Group for their continued support of our great Club which was established in 1893.

woMen's Bowling Manly bowling club Manly Women’s Bowling Club has continued to thrive during 2018. An influx of new bowlers who are keen and enthusiastic has invigorated the club. Our membership now totals 65 ladies.
The maintenance of the greens has improved under the direction of Mounties Group. Two greens are now playable resulting in more rinks being available more often. The members are very appreciative of such continued support. Club President, Aileen McLelland, has stepped down after three years of dedicated service. The members are grateful to Aileen for heading the club with efficiency, vibrancy and good humour. The new President is Joan Ryan who has been a hard worker in various roles for the club for many years. The members are confident that the club will continue to be in good hands. In 2018 the championship draws have been made more flexible in regard to the date of play. This has resulted in less forfeits and a much smoother progression to the finals.

Bocce Triglav Bocce for Slovenians is not only a sport, it is also a part of life and a great way to keep in touch with friends. Many bowlers whose health is not up to three hours workout on bocce courts still come around regularly to keep company with old mates.
The breaks between the games are quite important for the long-time friends to sit down together, enjoy a drink and share the memories of past years and the news of the present time. Sometimes, however, there comes another friend with a good idea, such as JoĹže Pahor, who brought his portable oven for roasting chestnuts to the bocce courts. Whilst the games were on, he roasted two big bags of chestnuts, about ten kilos of this delicious forest fruit and all players, friends and visitors enjoyed them very much. Many of our bocce players went off to Europe in the past months to enjoy the lovely summertime over there, but with the end of season overseas they are now coming back, and our bocce courts are full again twice a week, to our great delight.
