A HELPING HAND F O R FA M I L I E S I N NEED DANDELION SUPPORT NETWORK INC Expecting a newborn baby is a joyous occasion for expectant Mum to be, however that may not be the case if you are living in poverty. A healthy pregnancy free of anxiety and worry are a luxury for these women as they worry about where their next meal will come from, how they will pay the rent, and if they will truly be able to provide for their unborn child. Dandelion Support Network Inc - a grassroots not-for-profit organisation, is one of the many ClubGRANTS recipients that Mounties Group supports. They are an organization that provide family and child support to financially disadvantaged families and sole parents - a group which often encompasses mothers and children escaping domestic violence, Aboriginal

Australians, CALD families of Fairfield City Council, residents were born overseas and have difficulty speaking English, young parents and families with a child with a disability. It is within their Caringbah centre, they offer the “Providing safe sleeping and travel for babies and children in need” program. The program centres around assisting disadvantaged families by providing cots, car seats and prams to ensure the babies and children from these families are sleeping and travelling safely. The support from Mounties has allowed Dandelion Support Network to assist 64 families with nursery items they would otherwise have been unable to afford. It has also allowed these families to concentrate their limited resources in other ways to assist their children, which has removed a great deal of stress from their lives. “I am a support worker in a transitional accommodation program, and I work with families who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Dandelion is a hugely important support service for my clients. It helps enormously to keep children safe, and addresses poverty experienced by the vulnerable families I work with. From my
experience of requesting and collecting donations for clients it has been very well run and organised. My clients and I are very thankful for this service, the generous donations and all the effort and hard work that goes into making it such a well-run organisation”. One of the disadvantaged family that received the support is Yasmin*. Yasmin is living in refuge in the Fairfield area while she awaits the outcome of her Protection Visa application. She is not eligible for support payments from Centrelink, so she relies on shopping vouchers to survive. Yasmin recently found out that she is pregnant, and she is depressed and anxious about how she can provide for her baby.
Dandelion Support Network Inc was able to provide Yasmin with everything she needed for her new baby - a pram, bassinet, clothing, toys, linen and a maternity bag. They were also able to give Yasmin a brand-new car seat so she was no longer isolated and could take her baby to appointments. Mounties Group are proud to assist the many disadvantaged families and children and look forward to ongoing support of the Dandelion Support Network Inc and all the amazing work they do with our local community.

ANYONE CAN ACHIEVE THEIR DREAMS STREET UNIVERSITY The Ted Noffs Foundation was founded by the great Australian humanitarian, Reverend Ted Noffs, in 1970. During his remarkable career of pioneering initiatives for young people, Ted Noffs established Sydney’s first 24hour crisis centre in 1968, set up the first Drug Referral Centre in Sydney in 1967, co-founded the Aboriginal Affairs Foundation in 1962 and was the Co-Founder of Lifeline in 1963. The Ted Noffs Foundation today continues the legacy of Ted Noffs by providing 6

essential services for young people and their families. Today Matt Noffs, the grandson of Ted, has taken over as the CEO of The Noffs Foundation. He continues his grandfather’s legacy by pioneering a number of amazing initiatives for young people. In 2009, Matt knew that transforming a derelict tyre workshop in Liverpool into a youth centre was never going to be easy. It was the support received from Mounties that allowed his dream to become a reality. The Street University is now operating over 8 locations around Australia, assisting over 15,000 young people each year. The aim is to help young people realise their own dreams, harness their potential and to create positive outcomes for their lives and their community. “The Street Universities wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for Mounties. They were there at the
very beginning and were the first organisation to get behind Matt Noffs and his vision” - Randy Glazer (Manager of The Street University Liverpool). “For 11 years Mounties have made sure The Street University can continue to operate in South West Sydney. They supply us with an amazing warehouse space, fund our various programs and ensure we’re able to keep delivering our engagement and clinical services to young people in the surrounding areas. For that we are eternally grateful.” Randy adds. The initial funding from Mounties helped buy the old tyre shop and transform the building into a multipurpose safe space which includes a basketball court, an event space, a café, a classroom, 2 dance studios, a recording studio, a community garden, multimedia room, library and more. The regular support received now
helps us fund specific programs ranging from traditional therapies like counselling to engagement programs in music, dance, street art, graphic design, photography, videography and more. It is this progressive approach to social work with grassroots community participation that opens up dynamic and democratic spaces for marginalised and displaced cultures. The Street University helps channel young people away from personally destructive and anti-social behaviours and to improve self-esteem, inter-communal co-operation and social engagement. Street Universities show how anyone can achieve their dreams when they have the full support of family and the wider community. Mounties is proud to be a big part of this journey.

The positive impact Mounties has on the local community is no more visible than in its sponsorship of CareFlight, which helps saves thousands of lives each year. The helicopter rescue service has grown over the past 25 years since Mounties first became a regular supporter. Starting with just one helicopter, CareFlight carried out 500 missions in its first year – that figure now stands at 7000 with a fleet of 15 aircraft.
For the past eight years Mounties has been the major sponsor of Careflight, donating almost $1million to this vital community organisation. Helping more than 8,500 families across greater Sydney each year, for Osborn, the support of Mounties is vital for the local community to take flight. home independently for as long as possible. Most people want this and should have every opportunity to do so. Afterall home is where the heart is. Sometimes help can be as simple as needing new glasses or a new prescription. But other times it may mean making healthcare decisions that are a little more complex, and that’s where Mounties Care comes in. We have registered nurses that simply care about the health needs of our family members and the families that look after them. We understand every person is different and develop individual care programs to suit people’s unique circumstances. We have in-home services from pool maintenance to roof cleaning, cooking, and shopping to full respite care. If you have a concern about a loved one, do something about it and do it early – it may mean the difference between a little help here and there and full-time care required after a severe illness or healthcare crisis. Our nurses can be contacted on 02 9165 0838 and are available Monday to Friday, 8.30am – 5pm.
