SHOW YOUR SUPPORT ON RED APPLE DAY Apples aren’t just good for keeping the doctor away – they’re also a great way to bring awareness to an important cause!
21ST JUNE IS RED APPLE DAY
Mounties is hosting a Red Apple Day event on Wednesday June 20, in support of Bowel Cancer Australia.
Red Apple Day
Proceeds will go towards helping the 15,253 Australians who are diagnosed with bowel cancer – including 2186 people under the age of 55 – every year. The survival rate (chance of surviving at least five years following diagnosis) is only 68% - far behind other common cancers such as breast, prostate and melanoma, which have survival rates of around 90%. Mounties will be selling apples for a gold coin donation, or three for $5. We will also have Donateforat pins available for purchase $2,bowelcanceraustralia.org with all proceeds going to Bowel Cancer Australia.

FIT KIDS ARE HAPPY KIDS
SITTING AT WORK: A HEALTH HAZARD By Cathy Johnson for www.abc.net.au
STAR TS
24 JULY
Stretch, dance, balance & stomp in this fun class for toddlers aged 2 - 5.
At Ignite, we are all about fitness and wellbeing for everyone - and that includes our little ones! Active Minis promotes health and fitness for children aged 2-5 years. The class focuses on different areas of children’s development ranging from enhancing motor activity through climbing, running, jumping, balancing as well as hand eye coordination through rolling balls, catching and throwing. Of course, at Ignite we are like to help build confidence, so our instructors encourage children to use their social skills through team interactions and to problem-solve to help improve their cognitive development. The class is run by a qualified exercise specialist along with the trained childcare staff from Minis.
Many of us spend large chunks of our day sitting, especially when we’re at work. If we’re not glued to a computer screen or tethered to a phone, then we’re stuck in seats around tables in meetings. And that’s on top of the hours we spend sitting in cars, buses or trains getting to and from work. All this sitting seems to increase your risk of death from heart disease and other causes, research has found. And surprisingly, this happens even if you exercise regularly. “If you do 30 to 60 minutes a day of exercise, you tick the box of being active,” says Melbourne exercise researcher, Dr David Dunstan.
The key is to avoid sitting as much as possible or at least break up your sitting time – even if only by standing, which uses more muscles than sitting (this is not mentioned in the current national exercise guidelines, but Dunstan and others believe they need to change.)
WHAT YOU CAN DO Even little activities like getting up to make a cup of tea can make a difference. “We’ve actually reported that people who break up their sedentary time throughout the day, regardless of their total sedentary time, have a better health profile,” Dunstan says. “It all comes down to moving the muscles.”
“But then you potentially have 15 or so hours a day when you’re not sleeping and not exercising that you could be spending predominantly sitting.”
For Dunstan that means not sitting on public transport, and standing or moving around as much as possible while taking phone calls and during meetings.
There’s evidence the typical office worker is sedentary for 75 per cent of their working day. From research conducted over the past decade, it’s become clear this sitting affects our body’s processing of fats and sugars in ways that increase our risk of heart disease and diabetes.
TIPS FOR MOVING MORE:
And exercising every day won’t necessarily undo this damage. In fact, excessive sitting might undo the benefits of our daily exercise. “When we’re idle, we’re not contracting muscles and muscle contraction is an important component of the body’s regulatory processes,” says Dunstan, from the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute. In fact, one American expert, Professor Marc Hamilton, from Pennington Biomedical Research Centre, has gone so far as to suggest sitting for most of the day may be as dangerous to health as smoking.
• Stand when you use your phone (or use a cordless handset or headset so you can move around even more) • Move your rubbish bin and printer further way from your desk so you need to get off your chair to access them • Take the stairs instead of the lift between floors • Walk to a colleague to talk to them instead of sending an email. • Get up to move around for few minutes or so every hour • Do household chores like ironing or folding the washing while watching TV • Stand to watch children’s sporting activities or take the opportunity while they are at sport training to go for a walk yourself
Together, we believe educating children about health and fitness is paramount at this early age as it builds healthy habits early, which they can carry on with in their daily lives in years to come. The next term of Active Minis starts on 24 July. Classes are held during the school term on Tuesdays, at 10.45am. Cost is $150 for a 10-week term.
