WOUNDED HEROES GET TRIPLE THE SUPPORT FROM THE DIGGERS

It’s an ANZAC Day tradition that Sydneysiders flock to Harbord Diggers for one of the Northern Beaches biggest two-up games, but there is more to the event and how it supports our veterans, than what meets the eye.

Wounded Heroes Australia is a national charity supporting our brave men and women who have served - some with wounds you can see, some with wounds you can’t. One thing that connects them all is that they have put their lives on the line for our country.

As part of this year’s Harbord Diggers ANZAC Day two-up, the team at Harbord Diggers took a $10 entry fee for those attending. This fee is donated to a worthy veteran’s charity to give back on this important day. Mounties Group this year, chose Wounded Heroes as that charity and raised more than $16,000 for them!

But our partnership didn’t stop there.

Established in 2007, Wounded Heroes Australia is a Defence community organisation pledging support to Australian servicemen, women and their families. They provide immediate financial support to those in crisis, easing the financial, emotional and personal hardships of contemporary military life.

“What many are not aware of, is while we as a nation pay our respects on ANZAC Day, thousands of veterans and their families across Australia are suffering from the residual effects of their service. Some with physical ailments resulting in loss of income and homelessness, and others with scars that cannot be seen such as PTSD, depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues,” explained Wounded Heroes Australia President Martin Shaw.

48.4% of veterans discharging from the Australian Defence Force (ADF) develop mental health issues within the first 12 months of discharge. Wounded Heroes are there to support them.

“Another thing most people are not aware of is the ADF does not have Workcover. If they are injured through their service or cannot sustain employment there are a myriad of hoops to jump through to receive support. While there are a number of ex-service organisations out there for veterans, none are able to provide immediate crisis support 24/7 like we can at Wounded Heroes,” added Mr Shaw.

Wounded Heroes Australia was established to service this critical need and after 16 years has a service-delivery model that works, in the prevention of veteran suicide.

Mounties Group President, John Dean was pleased to invite a representative from Wounded Heroes to speak at the recent Mounties Staff Awards night in May.

“We invited Martin the president of Wounded Heroes to speak at our recent Mounties Staff Awards to share with us what that donations mean to the organisation and how they would provide support to those they assist.

“Our CEO and Board were so moved by the impact that Wounded Heroes has on our veterans and their families that we decided then and there to triple the donations we pledged to the charity,” said Mr Dean.

Recognising the sacrifices made by our wounded veterans and the challenges they face upon returning home, Mounties has stepped up to significantly boost their support for the Wounded Heroes charity.

“By tripling our donation, we can assist

Wounded Heroes have the resources necessary to provide immediate assistance, and support services to wounded veterans and their families, restoring their dignity,” added Mr Dean.

The decision to triple the donation to $50,883 will have a profound effect on the reach and scope of the assistance provided by Wounded Heroes. The additional funds will enable the charity to expand its programs, enhance existing services, and extend their support to a greater number of veterans in need across Australia.

SPRING INTO SWIMMING

It’s time to get your child back to swimming lessons and ready for a fabulous and safer summer.

While Carlile Swimming recommends lessons all year round in their heated indoor pools, many people take a break in winter. Spring brings a rush of bookings, Carlile is adding extra classes but they will book quickly so don’t miss out.

Carlile Swimming, pioneered baby teaching in Australia and opened Sydney’s first indoor learn to swim school. They are often asked when is the best time for children to start learning. The answer is the sooner the better.

Babies can start Water Confidence classes with their mum or dad from three months of age, whereas learn to swim for toddlers in the water on their own with a teacher starts at two and half years.

Can baby and toddler swimming lessons save a life? Yes.

No baby or toddler is safe alone around water, no matter how many swimming lessons they have done. A responsible adult must always be on the lookout and within arm’s reach.

But babies and toddlers can learn the skills in swimming lessons to buy the precious few moments that could avoid a tragedy. Rolling on their back, or paddling to the wall can save a life. Remember, in an emergency, every second counts. Learn CPR and if your child is missing, look in

the pool first.

The first thing to remember about drownings, is the majority of drownings in children under four occur when they accidentally fall into water. Small children fall and most often sink without a sound.

That’s why locking the gate, ensuring the fences are safe and there is no way for a child to climb into a pool is your first defence.

Your next defence is constant adult supervision. However, for long-term safety there is no substitute for children learning to swim well. On the Northern Beaches it’s a must.
