Riversleigh Fossil Centre museum and guided laboratory tour

Welcome to North West Queensland and to Mount Isa – the City of Opportunity! Here you’ll be able to revel in the breathtaking majesty and wonders of our rugged yet beautiful natural environment, the fascinating history of our city and its mining industry, and the Indigenous cultural wonders that stretch back many thousands of years. No matter what your age, you’re sure to find an activity that suits your interests – from water-skiing, fishing or swimming at Lake Moondarra, to four-wheel-driving throughout the region, exploring the North West’s ancient natural history and fossil record at Outback at Isa, or simply kicking back and enjoying a cold drink, delicious coffee and good meal at one of our many wonderful restaurants, cafes and pubs. Families can also enjoy Mount Isa’s Family Fun Precinct – which includes the Splashez Aquatic Centre, Family Fun Park and the Mount Isa Skate Park – or the many cool, leafy parks scattered throughout the city.

Enjoy your stay in Mount Isa Madam Mayor Joyce McCulloch

So much to offer We may be remote, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a wide variety of fun activities for people to participate in and enjoy across the city. People who live here take great pride in their city, and there is a strong sense of community here that is definitely one of Mount Isa’s strengths. Many may be pleasantly surprised at just how much there is to do here. Our city is warm, welcoming, multicultural and cosmopolitan.

More than meets the eye You may have heard that we are the Rodeo Capital of Australia – ours is the biggest and richest in the Southern Hemisphere, after all – but there’s so much more to our city’s identity than that. Mount Isa Mines, for instance, has been at the cutting edge of technology and innovation in the mining industry for decades. This area is rich in copper, silver, lead and zinc, and mining has been the city’s beating heart since its inception and its single biggest employer. We truly are the City of Opportunity. Mining has also brought in dozens of different nationalities to our city, making it one of the most culturally diverse regional cities in Australia. I encourage you to explore all that our region has to offer – you will not be disappointed. We would like to acknowledge and value Aboriginal people and their long, rich, cultural and spiritual connections to the Shoalhaven area. This is evident in the stories, ceremonies, natural landmarks and the sacred objects embedded in the landscapes and waterways throughout this region today.

As you journey through the Shoalhaven, absorb the beauty of the land, its magnificent landscapes , spectacular waterways and abundance of native flora and fauna. Travel thoughtfully and respectfully, remembering the footsteps of the ancestors who waled this land before you, and those who will follow.
