The Tropic Air 10to4 Mountain Bike Challenge - Event Programme 2022

Page 1

Welcome to the 2022 Edition of the 10to4 Mountain Bike Challenge! We are excited to host you on the slopes of Mount Kenya, at this the 21st edition of the 10to4 Mountain Bike Challenge! The two years of indescribable change and disruption only reinforce our mission to protect the environment around us. To ensure intact and thriving ecosystems, we cannot just want action we must take action ourselves. Taking part in this event means you have directly helped to plant trees, and to protect an immeasurably bio-diverse habitat and the ecosystem services we rely on. It is inspiring to have so many partners on board who believe in our vision. Not only do Tropic Air headline sponsor the event, they also provide aerial support for the entire weekend and beyond. The team are there for us whenever we need assistance and we cannot thank them enough for all they do. A special mention to Dormans, who have increased their sponsorship to Platinum Plus level in support of the event – good things happen because of good coffee! We welcome Osho, who have now come in with Gold level sponsorship. Lewa Wildlife Conservancy run a water stop, place rangers along the routes and have a helicopter and an ambulance on standby, a huge contribution to safety. We thank you for committing to Kenya’s conservation. Finally, our partners, volunteers and general supporters (so many to mention!) who support us over this weekend and year-round – a huge, huge thank you and we appreciate you all. We are thrilled to welcome new Mini 10to4 sponsors, East African. Like the young participants of the mini they are big fans of the event and the Trust. Mount Kenya Trust depends on the funds raised from this event in many different ways. Paying ranger salaries, fencing human-conflict zones or keeping vehicles on the mountain; every shilling is put towards the great mountain you will see on the trail. We help the local communities within our projects while protecting the water, forests and wildlife of our magnificent mountain. By being here today, so do you. A big thank you to everyone taking part in the event and helping to raise valuable funds. Take care on the trails, enjoy the spectacular environment around you and most importantly, have fun! The Mount Kenya Trust team

OUR PARTNERS The 10to4 would not be possible without our incredible local partners and hosts. During the course of the event you will pass through Mount Kenya National Park and Reserve, Kisima Farm, Marania Farm, Ol Donyo Farm, Ngare Ndare Forest Reserve and Borana Conservancy. The event opens up wildlife areas that are usually public or private conservation areas. We pay a portion of the funds raised to Borana Conservancy and a portion to Ngare Ndare Forest Trust for their projects, but it is a fraction of the true value of access to these protected areas, with significant rhino and elephant populations. The Kenya Wildlife Service and Kenya Forest Service not only waive entry fees, they help with security while you are on your bikes, because of the direct and indirect support Mount Kenya Trust gives them throughout the year. Lewa Wildlife Conservancy are also kindly helping us in a number of different ways, including security and medical assistance. All of the farms, conservancies and Reserves and the Mount Kenya Trust deploy their security and maintenance teams along the route before and during the event to ensure your safety. Tropic Air, our headline sponsor, will also be looking out for you from above. They make a huge and valued contribution by sponsoring a helicopter throughout the event to monitor both cyclists and wildlife, while carrying medics to assist if you are injured. Dormans, our Platinum Plus sponsor, donate valuable funds to help cover the logistics of the event and welcome warm drinks at the START lines and Borana Race Village!

OUR PARTNERS

Osho Chemicals are on board as our ‘gold’ sponsors and a number of organisations as ‘Silver Sponsors’ offering funds for logistic support. Thank you to Agventure, Equinox, Bayer, Northscape and HM Clause. We are also very grateful for support from our ‘Friends of Mount Kenya Trust’ category. Equipment, including tents for our sponsored teams, for our officials, bar and catering areas, plus chairs and tables for the spectator area is kindly provided by the British Army Training Unit in Kenya. Our profit margins for the event would be scarcely viable without this fundamental infrastructure. Thanks to Rusty Nail for catering and bar, the Bike Shop for the on-site shop, Express Automation for helping with radios and comms, Gras Savoye for insurance, Tropical Heat for providing goody bag snacks for all competitors and Kiran Suthar for providing drinking water. Ever supportive Born Free provide us with additional vehicles for the media and volunteers for the event. Prizes and water bottles have been donated to us by the Bike Shop, Kisima Farm, WildRides, Dormans, Cinnabar Green, Serenity Spa and the Born Free Foundation. Everyone has been incredibly generous! Huge thanks to Jowaki Electrical Services for providing materials and labour for infrastructure at Borana Race Village, the Start on Kisima and the registration area. Finally many thanks to Cottage Hospital, Gundua, Lewa Ambulance and Borana for medical support at the event. A huge thank you to Jemma Batten of Black Sheep Countryside management for managing all the entries and the website on a voluntary basis. We are incredibly grateful for the huge amount of time you‘ve contributed. And a big shout out to Charlie Dyer for helping our team check and map all the routes over many weeks. All of our incredible volunteers who help leading up to, during and after the event – we salute you!
