ATHLETIC CENTER
RINDERKNECHT ATHLETIC CENTER A “GAME CHANGER” FOR STUDENT-ATHLETES On June 7, 2019, over 170 people gathered to celebrate the grand opening of the Rinderknecht Athletic Center, including members of Mount Mercy’s Board of Trustees, city leaders, and Mount Mercy athletic coaches. Jack Dahm, head men’s baseball coach, outlined the impact of the Rinderknecht Athletic Center, stating, “John Rinderknecht’s incredible gift will provide us with the opportunity to recruit elite student-athletes and strengthen our athletic programs through a facility that is second to none. Earlier today I was fortunate enough to meet with a prospective student transferring from a Division I school to discuss our baseball program. When he saw the Rinderknecht Athletic Center he was extremely impressed—and said it was better than his previous institution’s

facilities. That student has now committed to playing baseball at Mount Mercy next year largely due to the incredible facility that John has provided. This athletic center is truly a gamechanger for all of our athletic programs.” Located across from the Plaster Athletic Complex on 17th St. NE, the new Rinderknecht Athletic Center was funded by the largest ever individual gift to Mount Mercy from real estate developer and long-time Mount Mercy board member, John Rinderknecht. Rinderknecht’s tenure with the Board of Trustees began over 30 years ago, and in that time he has contributed to many projects and initiatives at MMU including the Mount Mercy Fund, capital projects, and student scholarships. When approached about helping to fund the new athletic center, Rinderknecht realized the substantial impact such a facility could have on the Mount Mercy community and eagerly agreed. He was proud to invest in Mount Mercy—and extraordinarily, the renovation and construction was conducted by Rinderknecht Associates, a company founded by his father. “The Rinderknecht Athletic Center is truly amazing and will make a tremendous impact on the Hill,” said Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations Brenda Haefner ’96. “We are so grateful to John for his decades of service to Mount Mercy and his investment in this incredible new facility for our community!”
“John Rinderknecht’s incredible gift will provide us with the opportunity to recruit elite student athletes and strengthen our athletic programs...”
In addition to this dynamic training facility, athletic staff and coaches are located right next door in the Rinderknecht Athletic Center Administration Building, allowing coaches to be onsite while their student-athletes train. The Rinderknecht Athletic Center is not only a dynamic training facility, it also provides additional space to host events—including this year’s Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony during Alumni Reunion Weekend.

The Rinderknecht Athletic Center is a truly transformative addition to Mount Mercy and will provide a lasting impact on our coMMUnity.

As the chaplain, Father Tony has always felt the need for enhancements in the Chapel, a sentiment that is shared by many in our campus community.
MMU CHAPLAIN PARTNERS WITH LOCAL MUSICIANS IN SUPPORT OF CHAPEL OF MERCY Four years ago, Rev. Anthony Adawu arrived at Mount Mercy as the residential chaplain—and he’s influenced the lives of countless students during his time on the Hill. Adawu received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Ghana, his home country. He furthered his education in the United States, earning a PhD in curriculum and instruction with a specialization in second language education and culture from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a second PhD in practical theology from St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens, Florida. Adawu has a tremendous impact on the Mount Mercy community. He creates opportunities to help deepen and strengthen the university’s Catholic identity and Mercy heritage, maintains a pastoral presence for persons of all faiths here on the Hill, and teaches in our religious studies program. He is amiable and continues to build positive relationships with students, faculty, and staff. This academic year, Adawu celebrated a monumental milestone, and we were honored to celebrate with him. In December, about 100 community members and localparish priests gathered in the
10
Chapel of Mercy to join him in celebrating his 15th anniversary of priestly ordination. He spoke about his journey to the priesthood and the joy that comes with serving God and His people. As the chaplain, Adawu has always felt the need for enhancements in the chapel, a sentiment that is shared by many in our campus community. We are grateful for the support of two donors whose gifts were instrumental in these renovations. Long-time supporter and friend of the university, Lynda Schimberg, offered a lead gift to the university to make enhancements to the chapel, and Emeritus Trustee Emmett Scherrman and his wife Ann Barry Scherrman JC ’51 offered additional support for this transformational project. With these gifts, many key renovations were made to the chapel, including a new sound system, new audio-visual equipment, and new kneelers. In addition to the generous support received from Schimberg and Scherrman, Mount Mercy hosted a Praise is Rising concert featuring some tremendous musicians from the Corridor (including Adawu on percussion) to help raise funds for the Chapel of Mercy. Countless alumni and friends of the university showed up to enjoy an evening of worship and fellowship while seeing firsthand how impactful a new sound system and audio-visual equipment will be in the chapel. Enhancements to the Chapel of Mercy are expected to be completed by the end of 2019.

A LIFETIME OF SUPPORT LEADS TO OPPORTUNITIES FOR CURRENT STUDENTS Rick and Elaine (Drahozal) Samek ’78 began supporting Elaine’s alma mater over 30 years ago in recognition of the wonderful education she received on the Hill. Their annual gifts to the Mount Mercy Fund have supported the university’s greatest needs—including scholarship support, campus improvements, student resources, technology upgrades, and more. Rick and Elaine’s Mustang pride continued to grow as their daughter, Beth ’10, committed to play soccer at Mount Mercy in the fall of 2006. They loved watching Beth play at MMU and were thrilled to hear that the Plaster Athletic Complex would be added to the Mount Mercy campus. The athletic complex project struck a chord with them, and they made a generous contribution to name the Rick and Elaine Samek Home Soccer Bench in memory of (their mothers) Ella Samek and Shirley Pavlovsky Drahozal at the Plaster Athletic Complex. Reflecting on the benefits Elaine experienced firsthand and the impact the university had on their daughter, Rick and

Benda’s estate, it provided the perfect opportunity to honor Stephen by creating a scholarship in support of education majors, a field that was close to his heart. The Richard and Elaine Samek Endowed Scholarship in memory of Stephen W. Benda will provide scholarship support to generations of education majors with preference given to members of the women’s soccer team. Mount Mercy’s endowment provides valuable financial support for the current and future needs of MMU and our students. Endowment gifts are invested to provide steady income over time, and a portion of this income is used each year to award scholarships and fund programs specified by donors. In the 2017–18 school year, the university awarded over $17.5 million in scholarship support to students—and over $700,000 of that scholarship support came from endowed gifts to the university.

CAMPUS IMPROVEMENTS ENHANCE STUDENT EXPERIENCES One look across Mount Mercy’s campus showcases many physical renovations and campus accessibility enhancements —and these vital campus improvements were made possible by two generous gifts from donors who gave in different ways.
Thanks to donor support for accessibility improvements on campus, doors are literally being opened for our students.
Located on a hilltop in the Midwest, Mount Mercy may not be known for campus accessibility—however, thanks to a restricted gift from an anonymous donor for accessibility improvements on campus, doors are literally being opened for our students. This donor recognized the potential of the Mount Mercy tunnel system to provide year-round accessibility and invested in several campus upgrades. Automatic doors and magnetic door holders have been installed to provide independent mobility throughout the extensive underground tunnel network. Additional improvements to increase accessibility on campus are planned to replace sidewalks and remove trip hazards with resources from the estate of the late Janice Nie Wente ’71 (pictured here) and her husband Arlin. Mount Mercy received this generous gift from the Wentes, who farmed near Waverly throughout their married life. This transformational gift stemmed from Janice’s gratitude for her life-changing experience at Mount Mercy. The Wentes’ thoughtful planning will not only improve campus accessibility, it will also significantly impact Mount Mercy’s education department. Through their gift, the Wentes have established endowed funds for teacher education scholarships and professional development for the department of education. Construction is also underway for the renovation of a portion of the Busse Library to create space for new classrooms and offices to be named the Wente Education Center. The impact of the Wentes’ generosity will be evident for years to come. While utilizing different methods of giving, both donors recognized areas of need and invested in the future of Mount Mercy—and turned a vision of what could be into reality.

TURNING TRAGEDY INTO OPPORTUNITY FOR MFT STUDENTS The Ashley Merritts Fellowship was established in memory of the late Ashley Merritts, PhD, associate professor of marriage and family therapy at MMU. Her family is committed to funding an annual named scholarship for an MMU doctoral student in the Marriage & Family Therapy (MFT) Program who is interested in training and advancing the field of MFT. Merritts was inspired by the life and writings of Saint Teresa of Calcutta and exemplified her simple mission that “peace begins with a smile.” Her love and healing not only touched the couples, families, and kids she counseled, but also inspired the many college students she encouraged to follow her career path as a therapist and professor. She was a student of life in
that she felt each experience, no matter how large or small, should be embraced and acknowledged for the life lesson it offered. In each day and as a professor, Merritts found great joy. It is the hope and prayer of her family that through the scholarship recipients, her legacy continues. While Merritts was very passionate about her profession, her family was the most important thing to her. She was blessed to have a loving husband in Sean Merritts ’17 MBA, two beautiful boys, and wonderful relationships with her mother and father. Her legacy will live on through her incredible family, but also in the many lives she has influenced through her desire to truly live life. One of her favorite quotes of Saint Teresa of Calcutta, “Love cannot remain by itself—it has no meaning. Love has to be put into action, and that action is service,” exemplifies her philosophy of life.
In each day and as a professor, Merrits found great joy. It is the hope and prayer of her family that through the scholarship recipients, her legacy continues.
DID YOU KNOW? You can help provide our students with scholarship dollars to help fund their education—and with a minimum $1,000 investment you can name your scholarship and help determine the criteria for selecting the recipient. If you would like more information or are interested in giving a named scholarship, please contact us at giving@mtmercy.edu or 319-368-6468.

PROVIDING CONSISTENT SUPPORT TO THE NEXT GENERATION OF MUSTANGS Nearly 20 years ago, Laura Hand ’05 stepped onto Mount Mercy’s campus and felt like she was home. She immediately fell in love with the welcoming atmosphere of this small private college and knew that with smaller class sizes, professors would really know who she was and would be invested in her success. During her time at Mount Mercy, Hand received an exceptional education that challenged her and prepared her for a career as an educator—and she developed countless relationships along the way. When she accepted her first job, she found that her Mount Mercy education was instrumental in her success—and she wanted to give back to ensure that MMU continued the tradition of preparing students to succeed. “I chose to make recurring gifts to the Mount Mercy Fund because I believe in the education that Mount Mercy provides to students,” she said. The convenient, automatic monthly payments allowed Hand to make a larger gift by spreading it over the course of a year.
“I chose to make recurring gifts to the Mount Mercy Fund because I believe in the education that Mount Mercy provides to students.”
» LAURA HAND ’05
Recurring gifts to the Mount Mercy Fund make a tremendous impact on Mount Mercy and our students by supporting the areas of greatest need—including student scholarships and resources, campus safety, facilities maintenance, technology improvements, continued institutional growth, and so much more! Those who give every month make a sustained commitment to our students, and their gifts ensure that our Mustangs have the scholarship support, resources, and opportunities to find success at MMU and beyond. New this year is the 1928 Club, a way for MMU to recognize and thank those who make a minimum recurring gift of $19.28 per month to the Mount Mercy Fund in honor of Mount Mercy’s founding year. 1928 Club members receive access to exclusive events and 1928 Club swag! To join the 1928 Club, visit mtmercy.edu/make-gift, enter a gift of $19.28 or more, and check the box indicating you’d like to make your gift “every month.” For more information on supporting Mount Mercy through recurring giving, please contact giving@mtmercy.edu or 319-368-6468.

“A gift to Mount Mercy is a great way to honor your loved ones while supporting a project that is both close to their hearts, as well as your own. Both of our mothers were great fans of Mount Mercy soccer while our daughter, Beth, was both a player and coach. Dedicating the soccer bench in our mothers’ honor was a perfect way to remember their support for all their children and grandchildren’s activities. Scholarships are another great way to both honor a loved one, as well as support a specific program that has a special significance to you and your loved one.”
