PRESIDENT’S LETTER
W
ow, have we come a long way since the start of the Unity Campaign—the most successful fundraising effort in Mount Mercy’s almost 90-year history. We set out to raise an ambitious $35 million—at the start of the global recession recovery no less. And we did it. We did it together, raising almost $37 million!
They say seven is the world’s favorite number. There are seven days in a week, seven notes on a musical scale, seven colors in the rainbow, seven seas, and seven continents. Snow White had seven dwarves, there were seven brides for seven brothers, and let’s not forget James Bond, aka 007. I’d like to add the numerous transformational accomplishments at Mount Mercy during the seven years of the Unity Campaign to the list. Because of the generosity of thousands of donors, and the tireless efforts of so many, we have a great deal to commemorate. It’s my great privilege to share this report, highlighting a few of the many success stories of the Unity Campaign, including: • Becoming a full-fledged University in 2010. Reinforcing the Sisters of Mercy vision of blending faith and values with liberal arts learning and professional preparation, we made great strides to serve working adults and graduate students, in addition to our traditional residential students. • In 2011, we opened the Sisters of Mercy University Center, dramatically redefining life on the Hill. This hub of campus and heart of the University features the picturesque Rohde Family Plaza and (un)paved the way for a new, expansive campus green space. • Because of the generosity of Dyan and John Smith, the CRST International Graduate Center opened in 2013 and has become instrumental to the success of our six master’s degree programs. It also houses the Gerald and Audrey Olson Marriage & Family Therapy Clinic—boosting our leadership in MFT practitioner training while supporting the mental health needs of our Cedar Rapids community. • With thanks to the Robert W. Plaster Foundation, Hall-Perrine Foundation, and Lavern T. and Audrey Busse Foundation—among many other generous donors—Mount Mercy will debut a premier outdoor athletic complex in 2017, finally giving our outdoor student athletes the home field advantage they deserve. On behalf of all students, faculty, staff, administrators, trustees, Sisters of Mercy, and the entire Mount Mercy community, I extend a most heartfelt thank you—for your past, present, and continued support. It’s clear we’ve accomplished many amazing things, but the best is yet to come. We have a bold and exciting Strategic Plan in place, fostering our enduring commitment to meeting the evolving needs of our time. With specific objectives in the areas of enrollment growth; learning experiences; sharing our story; and ensuring we remain a great place to learn, work, and live—we’ve set the bar high. But that’s life on the Hill…always aiming higher. I truly thank you for your continued partnership, and I can’t wait to see what we come together to accomplish next. Most sincerely,
Laurie Hamen, JD President

We also owe a special debt of gratitude to Dr. Norm Nielsen. A seasoned educational administrator and devoted Cedar Rapidian with more than a half-century of experience under his belt, Norm graciously came out of retirement to lead Mount Mercy as interim president from 2013 until I came to the Hill in 2014. Norm spent 26 years at Kirkwood Community College, 20 as president, playing a key role in the institution’s leading national reputation. He was instrumental in creating an innovative partnership between Kirkwood and Mount Mercy in the 1990s, providing accelerated bachelor’s degree programs for those juggling careers and families. A charismatic and energetic leader, Norm carried the Mustang torch with pride and skill— guiding Mount Mercy to even higher heights at a time when we needed him most. We thank you, Norm!

BECOMING A
UNIVERSITY
6 | U N I T Y C A M PA I G N R E P ORT
A
lmost 90 years ago, the Sisters of Mercy of Cedar Rapids saw the need to unite people with opportunity through education. Their vision—to blend faith and values with liberal arts learning and professional preparation—is the hallmark of a Mercy education and the foundation of Mount Mercy’s success.
MOUNT MERCY BRAND PROMISE We are the regional Catholic, Mercy University that promises students of diverse backgrounds, ages, and faiths a challenging, practical education that inspires them to discover knowledge, build community, and lead courageous lives.
The history of Mount Mercy’s academic excellence and compassionate service dates back to 1928 when the Sisters of Mercy established Mount Mercy Junior College, a two-year college for women. The junior college flourished and transitioned to a fouryear college in 1960, granting bachelor’s degrees and eventually becoming co-ed in 1969. As time passed, Mount Mercy College added new programs that continued to reflect its original mission and values. Building on its reputation for high-quality, student-focused undergraduate education—and carrying forth its mission to meet the needs of our time—Mount Mercy launched its first master’s degree programs in 2008. The addition of graduate programs and a new core curriculum, coupled with community-focused programming, positioned the institution for re-designation as Mount Mercy University in 2010. Traditional residential and transfer students continue to find majors that ignite their passions—on a welcoming, safe, and vibrant campus that offers rich co-curricular activities and experiences. Working adults, striving to balance careers and families, find programs that fit their busy lives and schedules— in areas of study that drive their careers forward and provide opportunities for professional growth. Graduate students find high-quality, inspiring programs in competitive fields that have expanded to include business, education, nursing, criminal justice, strategic leadership, and marriage and family therapy. Mount Mercy University has evolved into a vibrant, intellectual community of the 21st century—providing a range of educational experiences and opportunities tailored to meet the needs of our local and global communities.

SISTERS OF MERCY
UNIVERSITY CENTER
Mount Mercy’s 43,500-square-foot, $6 million University Center has dramatically redefined the hilltop campus since its opening in 2011.

B
uilt between the twin pillars of Regina and McAuley residence halls, this transformational facility integrates a new campus green and picturesque outdoor plaza—creating a dynamic, unifying, and pedestrianfriendly environment. Now the centerpiece of University life, this hub of activity enhances every student’s experience, as well as that of Mount Mercy faculty, staff, alumni, and the greater community. For some, it’s hard to imagine life on the Hill without the old main road, lined with cars, splitting the northeast and southwest sides of campus. For others, breathing in fresh air while walking along the campus green is all they know. The University Center creates a comfortable, attractive, and high-tech setting—fostering collaboration, encouraging engagement, and instilling a sense of true community. A central location for conversation, study, relaxation, meeting, shared meals, events, and activities, it also increases the visibility and accessibility of critical student services and programs previously scattered about campus. Admissions, residence life, student life, health, counseling, and international student services offices can all be found in one, easy-to-access location—in the Transamerica Corridor of the facility. A longstanding Mount Mercy partner, the AEGON Transamerica Foundation has provided significant support for endowed scholarships, capital projects, and the Mount Mercy ExploreU STEM program—in addition to employing a considerable number of Mount Mercy graduates and financially supporting the University Center project. Transamerica stands in good company as a major contributor to this landmark. As a testament to the significant spiritual and financial support of the Sisters of Mercy, the heart of Mount Mercy was renamed the Sisters of Mercy University Center at a dedication ceremony on Mercy Day, 2014. Celebrated every September 24 by the Sisters of Mercy and their global ministries, Mercy Day commemorates the opening of the first House of Mercy by Catherine McAuley in Dublin, Ireland, in 1827. At the same 2014 ceremony, the plaza and patio just outside the Sisters of Mercy University Center were renamed the Rohde Family Plaza in honor of the Rohde family’s substantial support of the University. Charlie Rohde, immediate past chair of the Mount Mercy Board of Trustees, was instrumental in the development of the University Center and Plaza. This attractive outdoor gathering space is enjoyed by many for concerts, picnics, and campfires. Mount Mercy also launched the opportunity to sponsor engraved pavers throughout the Plaza. Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends use these everlasting tributes to commemorate loved ones, special occasions, and fond memories. Poignant additions to the Plaza came in the form of bronze sculptures of Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, and Frances Warde, an instrumental figure in bringing the Sisters of Mercy to the Unites States. Created by Sister Marie Henderson, the sculptures serve as daily reminders of purposeful living, compassionate service, and global impact. Because of the generosity of so many, countless members of the current and future Mount Mercy family will call this hub of campus—and heart of the University—home.

CRST INTERNATIONAL
GRADUATE CENTER
W
hile the addition of master’s degree programs was important to Mount Mercy’s university designation in 2010, the opening of the CRST International Graduate Center has become instrumental to the programs’ remarkable success.
Mount Mercy’s nearly 50-year history of serving working adults in the Greater Cedar Rapids area formalized in 1997 as an innovative partnership with Kirkwood Community College. Accelerated, fast-paced bachelor’s degree programs served the needs of many seeking to obtain this increasingly necessary credential while juggling careers and families. Launching graduate programs in academic areas of recognized expertise was a natural progression for Mount Mercy. However, the popularity of its initial offerings quickly led to increased enrollment and the need for more space. Nestled in an established, quiet, residential neighborhood less than two miles from the main campus, Mount Mercy’s CRST International Graduate Center (formerly a U.S. Army/Naval Reserve training center) was made possible thanks to a grant from the U.S. Department of Education and a $2.1 million gift from Dyan and John Smith on behalf of CRST International. Dyan and John Smith have a long history of supporting Mount Mercy and the community—both financially and with their time and talents. John, chairman of the board at CRST, previously served on the Mount Mercy Board of Trustees, and Dyan, a current trustee, has served since 1995. The Smiths’ generous donation in support of the University’s graduate center effort marked one of the largest gifts in Mount Mercy’s 89-year history. Debuting in 2013, the renovated 34,500-square-foot CRST International Graduate Center is now home to six graduate programs—business, education, nursing, criminal justice, strategic leadership, and marriage and family therapy—all with in-demand areas of emphasis.
10 | U N I T Y C A M PA I G N R E P O RT
A combined annual enrollment of nearly 400 students enjoy state-of-the-art resources and amenities, including 14 classrooms, several common areas and study spaces, a computer lab, the Francis J. Pruss Conference Center, the Graduate Grounds coffee shop made possible by the Chris & Suzy DeWolf Family, and the Olson Marriage & Family Therapy Clinic. With a significant financial gift from Gerald and Audrey (’76) Olson, Mount Mercy’s marriage and family therapy (MFT) program gained a valuable asset in the Gerald and Audrey Olson Marriage & Family Therapy Clinic. This transformational clinic offers high-quality, low-cost counseling services to the public while providing hands-on, supervised training for the program’s students. Mount Mercy offers the only program in Iowa that trains entrylevel MFT practitioners from a systems perspective—fully staffed by student therapists under the supervision of licensed MFT therapists. While these services help set the Mount Mercy MFT program apart, they also fill a critical void in the mental health care system of the Cedar Rapids population. Catering to working professionals seeking to advance their education goes beyond having unique, high-tech facilities and scheduling convenient class times. It includes creating a curriculum grounded in real-world applications, enlisting faculty who are talented and well-credentialed, and fostering a classroom environment where students build community—sharing their experiences and learning from each other. The addition of the CRST International Graduate Center is a significant milestone in Mount Mercy’s commitment to lifelong learning—serving the professional leadership needs of its growing community by preparing the next generation of entrepreneurs, teachers, nurses, educators, and therapists. With this incredible resource, Mount Mercy is in the perfect position to launch additional advanced degree programs that better the community and its people.

PLASTER
ATHLETIC COMPLEX
F
or over 40 years—through countless victories, national titles, and Mustang glory—Mount Mercy’s outdoor athletes have never had a home field to call their own. To simply practice and play, alternative spaces scattered throughout Cedar Rapids were rented, making it difficult for athletes to train, compete, and generate much-deserved fan enthusiasm. With the 2013 acquisition of 22 acres of land a few blocks down the Hill, Mount Mercy will debut a premier outdoor athletic complex in 2017, finally giving its outdoor student athletes a home field advantage. The $15 million Robert W. Plaster Athletic Complex will provide a permanent home for baseball, softball, men’s and women’s track and field, and men’s and women’s soccer—six of the University’s 17 intercollegiate athletic teams. The Complex honors Robert Plaster, co-founder and active supporter of Enactus (formerly Students in Free Enterprise), a student, business, and entrepreneurship organization, with an award-winning chapter on Mount Mercy’s campus. Achieving substantial success without a college degree, Plaster believed that hard work and the free enterprise system gave him the opportunity he needed. Respecting the increasing value of higher education, Plaster set out to create educational opportunities for young people, giving them more than he had. To that end, in 1983, he established the Robert W. Plaster Foundation, dedicated to creating enhanced learning environments in the Midwest through named capital projects and state-of-the-art facilities. Mount Mercy’s Plaster Athletic Complex would not have been possible without the generous support of the HallPerrine Foundation. The Foundation enriches the quality of life for the Linn County, Iowa, area by supporting important social, cultural, educational, and health care causes. Underscoring the many educational and community benefits the Plaster Athletic Complex brings to the University and community, the Hall-Perrine Foundation awarded a $4 million, 2:1 matching grant for the project. Howard Hall, founder of the foundation that bears his name, was a leader in the economic development of Cedar Rapids. He brought many industries to the city, including Iowa Manufacturing—which, as fate would have it, once stood on the very site where the Plaster Athletic Complex now stands. One of the key highlights of the storied 22-acre site is Busse Softball Field, made possible with a lead gift from the Lavern T. and Audrey Busse Foundation. Longtime Mount Mercy donors, the Busse family has supported student scholarships, contributed to the Sisters of Mercy University Center project, and made the principal naming gift for Mount Mercy’s Busse Library, which opened in 1993. Avid softball enthusiasts, supporting Mustang Softball at the Plaster Athletic Complex was a perfect match for Lavern and Audrey— further enhancing the Mount Mercy-Busse legacy.

Almost 90 years in the making, the addition of the Plaster Athletic Complex to the Mount Mercy experience, and the Cedar Rapids area, is most certainly a game-changer—made possible by the generosity, dedication, and support of so many loyal partners. UNIT Y CAMPAIGN REPORT | 13

FATHER TONY In 2015, Reverend Anthony Adawu, lovingly known as Father Tony, became Mount Mercy’s first full-time chaplain in almost six years. As residential chaplain, his pastoral presence reinforces Mount Mercy’s Catholic tradition and Mercy charism through sharing of the Gospel, teaching, interaction, and collaboration with people of all faiths throughout the campus community. Father Tony is also an adjunct professor and serves as a liaison to Catholic parishes and schools in the area. Born and raised in Ghana, Father Tony completed his bachelor’s degree in sociology and study of religions, and earned a master’s degree in teaching English as a second language from the University of Ghana. He also completed studies of philosophy and theology at St. Paul’s Catholic Seminary and St. Peter’s Regional Seminary in Ghana. Father Tony was ordained in 2003, and served as seminary formator for St. Teresa’s Minor Seminary and as pastor for St. Teresa’s Catholic Church in Elmina, Ghana. Upon arriving in the U.S. in 2007, Father Tony served the parishes of Glen Burnie, Maryland. He earned his PhD in curriculum and instruction with a specialization in second language education and culture from the University of Maryland, College Park. In 2016, Father Tony completed his second PhD, this time in practical theology from St. Thomas University in Florida, and began teaching in Mount Mercy’s religious studies and English as a second language education programs. Under Father Tony’s leadership, Mount Mercy began a Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults program and celebrates daily Mass and other Sacraments of the Church. Always seeking to increase student, staff, and alumni involvement, he also piloted Mount Mercy’s 2017 Collegiate Day of Prayer and leads a weekly 15forUs prayer meeting—leading the campus community in 15 minutes of prayer for students, the entire Mount Mercy family, and the world. With his global experience, education, and engaging personality, Father Tony brings a revitalized energy— not only to Mount Mercy, but to the broader community.

MARTIN “MART Y” ANDREAS (1939–2016) Mount Mercy’s longest-serving board member and chair of the University’s Finance and Investment Committee, which he established, Martin “Marty” Andreas was a man of vision, enthusiasm, and compassion. He served the Board of Trustees for 40 years with distinction, leaving behind a legacy of financial management that changed the course of Mount Mercy’s future and positively impacted thousands of students’ lives. Marty was a key executive in the management of ADM for 35 years and played a significant leadership role in the community. In retirement, he ran his family’s investment business with his two sons and dedicated himself to two of his favorite lifetime hobbies, gardening and photography. Marty and his wife, Leesa, concentrated their efforts on giving back through community organizations they felt were making a difference. Marty saw his philanthropic role at Mount Mercy in a very similar light to his role as a gardener—planting the endowment and watching it grow over the years. His gift to Mount Mercy, in the form of a charitable lead trust, enabled the building of three new apartment-style residence halls on campus, known as the Andreas House. It’s quite fitting, then, that Mount Mercy dedicated a memorial garden in Marty’s name—Andreas Garden—shortly after he passed. So generous with his time, talent, and treasure, Marty will be missed by many, but he leaves a significant legacy for generations to come.

SISTER MARY CEPHAS WICHMAN JC ’51, ’61 (1932–2016) A native of Iowa, Sister Mary Cephas Wichman was a vowed member of the Sisters of Mercy for 66 years. She graduated from Mount Mercy Junior College in 1951, received her bachelor’s degree from Mount Mercy College in 1961, and received a master’s degree from the Catholic University of America in 1968. Sister Mary Cephas then served in elementary and middle school education in Eastern Iowa for 18 years, and as president of the Sisters of Mercy Cedar Rapids for eight years, before serving her alma mater. During her 33 years of service on the Hill, Sister Mary Cephas was a trustee, alumni director, director of planned giving, and eventually vice president of development. She led two major building fundraising campaigns, helped build the Mount Mercy endowment, and established the Heritage Club to recognize individuals who have included the University in their estate plans. Known for her generosity, kindness, and delicious scones, Sister Mary Cephas dedicated much of her career to developing relationships and raising support for education—a hallmark of the Sisters of Mercy. In recognition of her dedicated service, she was conferred with the title Vice President Emerita, and upon her retirement in 2004, Mount Mercy established the Sister Mary Cephas Wichman Endowed Scholarship in her honor.
