“Staging isn’t just about making a room pretty: it’s about making people money.”

D E S I G N I N G A N E W C A R E E R H O M E S TAG I N G PAM FIEBER Owner, Edit Home Staging Turning her interest in home decor and real estate into a career was an intriguing possibility, but a daunting one as well for Pam Fieber. She wanted to explore her options without leaving her job in journalism and publishing, so the Home Staging Certificate of Completion at Mount Royal was a perfect fit. “The courses didn’t take me away from my regular life or commitments. I could do the educational aspect on the side while deciding if I wanted to pursue staging further,” Fieber says. The Introduction to Home Staging course whetted her appetite, so she dove into the Home Staging as

a Business course, which featured “the nitty-gritty questions you need answered” when it comes time to go out on your own. Fieber launched her business, Edit Home Staging, on a part-time basis two years ago and has grown it into a full-time career that offers her the flexibility she needs as a mother of two. “I love helping people and that’s what I do. Staging isn’t just about making rooms look pretty: it’s about making people money. My favourite thing is when people walk in to their home after I’ve staged it and say ‘I don’t want to move now.’”

“There are so many avenues you can pursue in a career in supply chain management.”

C R E A T I N G A C A R E E R F O R T H E L O N G R U N S U PPLY C H A I N M A N AG EM EN T MIKE CLERMONT Operations planner Mike Clermont became the general manager of a successful restaurant when he was 24. He enjoyed the work and learned a lot, but the Calgarian was focused on his long-term career. “I was working 60 hours a week for $50,000 a year. I asked myself, ‘How long can I keep doing this?’ ” Clermont recalls. Exploring his options, Clermont enrolled in the introductory course in the Supply Chain Management Extension Certificate at Mount Royal, as he had a longstanding interest in the field. “The instructor, Dwight Boehm, made it so fun, so interesting, I was hooked. I thought, ‘I could probably do

that for the rest of my life.’ There are so many avenues you can pursue in a career in supply chain management.” Over the course of three years, he took one course at a time, mostly online, while working fulltime. He completed his certificate in 2017. Now an operations planner, Clermont, 27, oversees western Canada distribution for a large multinational food manufacturer. He’s loving his new career and is appreciative that Mount Royal’s flexible educational offerings helped him get there. “Online learning was my saving grace. If I couldn’t have done it through online courses, I don’t think I could have done it.”

“This course allows an average person to take their content up a significant notch.”

E L E V A T E Y O U R C O N T E N T W I T H V I D E O V I D EO PR O D U C T I O N GIL NGAI Instructor, Mount Royal University The digital revolution has put incredibly powerful video tools into the hands of the masses. But what those people do with that cuttingedge technology is up to them. That’s where the Video Production Certificate at Mount Royal University comes in. As the creative director of Calgary production firm Day One Media and the president of the Calgary Professional Videographers Association, Gil Ngai knows how rapidly video technology can change and what it takes to stay ahead of the curve. “People in all areas of marketing have found these to be useful tools that are relatively easy to use and

are an interesting way to get content for promoting any kind of industry,” says Ngai, the instructor of Introduction to Drones and GoPros. “But it can be very challenging to stay current. These tools are essentially seeing upgrades several times a year.” Student gain the hands-on skills and knowledge in the certificate’s three courses to shoot and edit videos that feature their content in a package that will get noticed. Take drone footage, for instance. “This allows an average person to take their content up a significant notch using a tool that allows a very different perspective. It’s not nearly as common, so it makes the content really jump out.”
