Free tutorial for online learners For online learners, it is highly recommended that you take a FREE tutorial. It includes important tips and you’ll practice submitting an assignment, sending a test email, starting a discussion online, taking a quiz and reviewing your grades. Withdrawal policy

Refund policy

Withdrawal from a course may be requested on or before the official course end date. A “W” grade will be assigned and recorded on your official academic transcript. No tuition refund will be issued. If you stop attending classes and do not follow the official withdrawal procedure, you will receive a failing grade. You are encouraged to consult with your instructor before withdrawing from a course.

All refunds are subject to an administration fee of 10 percent of course tuition (up to a maximum of $50). In all cases, when a refund is issued before the course start date, the course will not appear on the academic transcript.

These online courses — taught by horticulturalists, scientists and marketing specialists with experience in the cannabis industry — position you at the forefront of this booming business. Gain specialized skills and knowledge designed to meet the demand for a trained workforce in the cannabis sector, which is predicted to reach $22.6 billion within five years. The curriculum has a strong focus on understanding and complying with the Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations (ACMPR). Step 3: Arrange private lessons If you are a returning student, call us at 403.440.6821. New students should submit a lesson placement request at mru.ca/LessonForm. An instructor will contact you to assist with your placement and determine the day, time and duration of your lessons.

Withdrawal policy For class lessons, there is a no-refund policy. In extenuating circumstances, the student may file an appeal in writing to the program administrator, general programs, requesting a refund. If approved, a $50 administration fee will be deducted from the refund. If a student formally withdraws from private lessons before the fourth scheduled lesson, a refund will be made equal to the tuition paid, less a $50 processing fee and the cost of four lessons. Withdrawals made after the fourth scheduled lesson will not receive a refund. For all withdrawals and refund requests, the instructor will provide an accurate, correct record of all lessons scheduled.

Lessons are taught by highly qualified professional teachers and performers with real-life musical experience. The Academy Program offers advanced young musicians the opportunity to progress at an accelerated pace. Guitar

The Academy guitar program is for enthusiastic, ambitious young players seeking a well-rounded music education. This program is designed as a supplement to a student’s private guitar lessons, offering a group environment where they may further develop their playing ability, performance skills, theoretical foundation and overall musicianship.

Voice

This is a comprehensive, credit-free training program for singers aged 13 to 19 who exhibit a sincere desire and the vocal talent to become a classical singer. The vocal program is a supplement to private voice lessons. For full information on the Academy for Young Artists, visit mru.ca/Academy.

 ADVANCED PERFORMANCE PROGRAM Applications are accepted until April 15, 2019 This unique program is for aspiring professional musicians who want to intensively hone their performance technique, musicianship and collaboration skills in an inspiring, supportive environment. Highly self‑motivated students can prepare to succeed in future academic and professional endeavours. The Advanced Performance Program is for music students at the undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate levels. However, exceptional students of high-school age will also be considered. This intensive, non‑credit program runs from September to May and can be pursued for one to four years.

 EARLY CHILDHOOD MUSIC Music with Your Baby Music with Your Baby creates a strong team composed of parent, teacher and child, where you play an important role in developing your child’s full potential. The 45-minute classes, held weekly, take place in an environment enriched by music and language. The program promotes confidence and self-esteem, increases focus and concentration, strengthens physical and aural awareness, and fosters a love of music, language and learning that will last throughout your child’s life. Music and Movement Music and Movement combines imaginative play, musical games, singing and instrument playing. Your child will use instruments and equipment such as xylophones, glockenspiels, hand drums, rhythm sticks, Orff instruments, balls, hoops and scarves. Kodály classes Kodály musicianship classes create a playful atmosphere where children use the voice as their first instrument. Children are actively engaged as they develop music skills — including in-tune singing, rhythm, tempo, melody and dynamics — through voice and select instruments. Parental involvement is an essential component of the Kodály program. Parents join their children for the final 10 minutes of each 45-to-60-minute class and are encouraged to share musical activities at home. Some classes are held at Vecova Centre, 3304 33rd St. NW. Orff classes Using their voices to speak and sing, and their bodies to move and dance, children in Orff classes joyously progress from musical imitation to improvisation and literacy. Weekly classes (45 to 60 minutes in length) are based on what children like to do: sing, chant rhymes, clap, dance and keep a beat on anything near at hand. These instincts are directed into learning music by hearing and making it first, and then by reading and writing music later, as age appropriate. At the end of the term, each class performs in one of MRU’s beautiful theatres. The whole family is invited to celebrate the children’s accomplishments. All Orff classes are unparented. Some classes are held at Vecova Centre, 3304 33rd St. NW.

Orff Prep classes

This class introduces some of the fundamental elements of music in a playful and holistic way. Children sing, dance and play music on a variety of instruments and develop their intellectual, motor, emotional and social skills. Ages 3 – 4

Orff Basic classes

This class is for four year olds with previous music experiences (e.g. Music and Movement classes or Orff Prep) and five year olds with no previous music experience. By making music together and later labelling and consciously experiencing the elements of music, children learn about rhythm, beat, melody and basic music notation. Ages 4 – 5

This class is for five year olds who have taken the Orff Basics class and six and seven year olds with no previous music experience. Children will learn and create arrangements using percussion instruments. For Level 2, children must have completed two terms of Level 1. Level 1

Early Childhood Strings This program is delivered in a supportive group setting, where games, storytelling, solfege and songs provide an enjoyable child-centered environment. After one to two years, students will be able to play with good posture, exhibit technical fundamentals, perform simple melodies and properly care for their instruments. In addition, studies show there are many non-musical benefits for your child. These include improved discrimination of pitch, enhanced reading abilities, better memory and cognitive flexibility and increased fine motor skills. Violin: Ages 4+

Children’s Early Cello Ensembles Cello group classes are a wonderful complement to private lessons as they allow young cellists to experience the fun of making music with their peers. Programs For ages 3+ All Mount Royal University Conservatory Suzuki programs are endorsed by the Suzuki Association of the Americas and the European Suzuki Association. Each program delivers musical and instrumental instruction in accordance with the proven Suzuki method instructional philosophy. Students learn to plan an instrument step-bystep based on listening, watching and reading while building their own musical vocabulary. Parents attend all classes and coach at home.

Guitar Every child can learn to play the guitar at a high level. Carefully chosen repertoire enables your child to build excellent technique and musicianship from a solid foundation of musical awareness.In addition to weekly lessons, your child learns from other students in bi-monthly group classes and frequent recitals. These learning opportunities further your child’s playing skills and motivation.

Piano Piano students in the Suzuki Method learn music in a simple and direct way, similar to the way they learn to speak. Every aspect of the Suzuki program is dedicated to the child — from repertoire, lesson length and seating at the instrument to the positive pedagogic approach. Parents participate actively, attending lessons and practicing with their child at home.

Trumpet This year-long program provides a balance between working on musical literacy and gaining instrumental skills so students develop the ability to read music and play their instrument with beautiful tone and strong technique.

Hindustani vocal music is the classical music of Northern India. The music is based on the Raga system, which is a melodic scale consisting of notes from the basic seven notes.This class takes place in a fun, organized and respectful learning environment. Ages 14+

 ORCHESTRAS AND ENSEMBLES All orchestras and ensembles run September through May. Acceptance is by audition.

Preparatory Strings This is the entry-level ensemble for strings. Members must be at least seven years old and have two years playing experience (minimum RCM Grade I/end of Suzuki Book I). No maximum age is set. The orchestra concentrates on basic orchestral skills, listening, ensemble playing, etc. Members should be able to play in the keys of D, G, A and C. Ages 7+

Pre-Chamber Strings A and B Members in this string orchestra benefit from further ensemble skills in preparation for the Chamber or Junior Strings. Most players have one year of experience in the Preparatory Strings or its equivalent. Ensemble A, Ages 7+

In addition to weekly rehearsals, players participate in an annual workshop with a guest conductor, the Conservatory’s annual Winter Fantasia concert and other performance opportunities arising during the term. Calgary Youth Orchestra The Calgary Youth Orchestra (CYO) is the flagship orchestra in Mount Royal Conservatory’s Orchestral Program. Internationally recognized as one of Canada’s leading youth orchestras, the CYO provides solid training in orchestral playing, with professional coaching from some of the best local, national and international clinicians and conductors. Workshops with guest conductors and visiting orchestras are regular program features. The CYO performs a series of concerts throughout the year and participates in the annual Alberta Youth Orchestra Symposium with the Edmonton Youth Orchestra in Banff. Since 1970, the orchestra has toured internationally and continues to do so, usually every second year. Acceptance into the orchestra is by competitive audition in May. Ages 14 – 24

De Boeck Jazz Combo For jazz students and enthusiasts alike, this Jazz Combo class provides the opportunity to develop ensemble and improvisational skills necessary to perform in a jazz context. Ages 16+

 BANDS Mount Royal Adult Beginner Band If you want to learn to play an instrument in a group setting, much like a school band, this is the group for you. No previous experience is required. You will start with the basics and keep learning. And if you haven’t played for some time, this is an opportunity to relearn your instrument. Concert Band instruments include flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, horn, baritone, tuba and percussion. Ages 16+

Ukulele The cognitive benefits of playing music has been studied for years and the ukulele fits in amazingly well. Some concepts include “hum ‘n’ strum” — singing a lot of songs, understanding a wide variety of rhythms, learning chords, reading notation and tablature. All concepts will be introduced through a wide variety of music styles in a fun environment. Ages 16+

Violin You can learn to play the violin, and play it well, as an adult. A group class is a great way to start. Not only will you get feedback on your progress, you’ll be motivated to practice and have fun making music with others. At the end of eight weeks, you will play with good posture and physical set up, be able play simple melodies, develop your pitch and rhythm, and read simple music. No experience is necessary. Music Literacy is reading, writing and discussing music with others. This course of study will guide the participants to explore, understand and create music while sharing their findings within an arts community.

Music Literacy We take a comprehensive approach to understanding music theory with practical applications to performance and music creation. By applying concepts through circular learning, a deeper understanding of the basics will lead to a greater appreciation of more complex musical materials. Students explore sound physics and technology, musical concepts (melody, harmony, rhythm, texture, structure), internalizing/externalizing music (ear training), focused listening to explore historical and cultural context and musical creation in an environment that encourages sharing musical discoveries.  SPEECH ARTS AND DRAMA Rhymes and Rhythms Our developmental approach and small class size encourages young children to develop clear, expressive speech and confident communication. Children develop a love of literature through exploring the rhymes and rhythms of nursery rhymes and poetry, and responding to the literature physically, vocally and imaginatively through movement, storytelling and choral speaking. Storybook Series Children step into some of their favourite and soon-to-be-favourite storybooks, experiencing them through creative drama storytelling and dramatic play. Imagination and creativity take centre stage as students explore a variety of contemporary and classic literature through creative drama, improvisation, storytelling and group performance. Mount Royal Taiko Drumming Taiko is the art of Japanese drumming. Traditionally performed for religious, theatrical and communication purposes, taiko is developing into a popular performance art. Taiko is now seen around the world and Canada established its first taiko ensemble in 1979. Classes focus on introducing and developing basic striking skills, proper stance and posture, and learning taiko ensemble pieces with basic choreography.

Beginner Taiko This class introduces students to the art of taiko, including a brief history of modern taiko, basic taiko technique, proper stance and posture, and an introduction to beta (flat) and naname (slant) style of taiko playing. Students learn a traditional taiko song in each style. No prior drumming or musical experience is necessary. Students with prior experience can further develop their understanding of taiko technique and kuchishoga. Ages 16+

Intermediate Taiko Students will deepen their understanding of kuchishoga, begin simple improvisation and focus on improving individual technique. At least one session of Beginner Taiko is required, or equivalent experience. Ages 16+

Taiko Repertoire Students must have prior taiko experience (for example, have completed a technique class), and be comfortable with basic beta or naname technique and kuchishoga. Students should contact the Conservatory if they have any questions.

Korekara Korekara (“from now on”) was written by Michelle Fuji and Walter Clarke with a spirit of deep appreciation for taiko pioneers and excitement for the future. Korekara honours the generosity of these visionaries, builds upon the foundation that they have laid and encourages taiko to go in exciting new directions. Ages 16+

Click-It Click-It is a fun, interactive open-source taiko piece composed by Kristy Oshiro. Using two naname-dai, students will enjoy playing in pairs with this unique piece. Ages 16+

Taiko Ensembles Taiko ensembles are intended for taiko players who have at least one year of experience, or at the discretion of the instructor. These ensembles focus on mastering taiko repertoire with the intention of performing at community events. Taiko ensembles have performed at MRU events in the Bella Concert Hall, Nickle and Leacock Theatres, in addition to non-MRU events such as the Mayor’s Lunch, Globalfest and the Calgary Stampede.
