To call & come together
SPRING CONVOCATION
2021
A TIME OF FORMALITY AND CELEBR ATION
convocation The word ‘convocation’ comes from the Latin word ‘convocare,’ which means to call and come together. The ceremony dates back to medieval times. When the student is presented on stage by faculty, it is a sign to the student and society that a degree of proficiency has been attained.
Mount Royal University is located in the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) and the people of the Treaty 7 region in southern Alberta, which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut’ina, and the Iyarhe Nakoda. We are situated on land where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, and the traditional Blackfoot name of this place is “Mohkinstsis,” which we now call the city of Calgary. The city of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation.
Welcome graduates Today is a wonderful celebration where, as graduates, you reflect on your achievements
and appreciate the people who helped you.
BEING WELL PREPARED
contributing TO THE FUTURE
My long love affair with learning goes back to 1966 when after my first day of school I returned home to set up my own classroom. Twenty years later I taught an economics class at Mount Royal, then served on the Foundation Board of Directors and twice on the Board of Governors and helped the institution grow from a college into a university. I have also worked alongside talented alumni. What I know to be true is that as a Mount Royal student you received individual attention from faculty and staff who were committed to helping you achieve your goals. Along with completing your program, with its required skills and knowledge, you benefited from a liberal education. You have become a critical thinker, a collaborator and an innovator. This foundation will serve you well no matter the situation. Graduating class of 2021, I hope you never forget that you are among the most educated and privileged people on this planet. Take the degree you are being granted today and move forward with confidence. You have a proven work ethic and are well prepared as citizens to advance the needs of all our people, as we strive to build a strong and resilient economy, environment and community. My deepest congratulations to you for all that you’ve accomplished today and my best wishes on your exciting journey!
Sincerely,
Dawn Farrell Chancellor
REACHING OUR GOALS
transforming OUR LIVES
My sincere congratulations to the graduates! You made sacrifices and worked hard to earn an education in your chosen discipline. In parallel, the experience of pursuing your academic goals led to personal growth. Today is a time to celebrate your resilience, your perseverance and your growth. Friends and family members of graduates, you helped someone dear to you in their academic journey — evidence that you too value higher learning. Your encouragement and support of today’s graduates, especially during a very difficult period, creates an invaluable legacy of each generation encouraging the next to pursue their goals. Faculty and staff, convocation is the outcome of your commitment to education. Mount Royal’s strong reputation for teaching and learning comes from your efforts. Your support of each student as a whole person will endure. Today we have the honour of watching graduates of MRU move on to their next adventure. I also appreciate community members who partner with us and support post-secondary education in Alberta. We are very fortunate to benefit from their experience, wisdom, passion and support. Over many years I have witnessed the enthusiasm of individuals as education transforms their lives and in turn brings energy to communities and society. I am so pleased to celebrate the momentous achievements of today’s graduates with all of you today.
Sincerely,
Timothy Rahilly, PhD, President and Vice-Chancellor Mount Royal University

OUR SCHOLARLY
traditions REGALIA The tradition of academic gowns, hoods and caps (called regalia) dates back to the Middle Ages. You will notice the Platform Party members wear unique regalia representing their university, level of academic achievement and area of knowledge. Academic dress is prescribed by Oxford and Cambridge. It is the Cambridge gown style that is worn by our graduates. The hood goes back to the Middle Ages when begging friars placed goods into the hood. Mount Royal follows the Oxford hood style. The borders of the hood display a colour associated with the degree being conferred. The headwear is known as a mortar board and hails from Ancient Greece when a felt hat was worn on top of a skull cap. The current style comes from Oxford and Cambridge.
OUR COAT OF ARMS Arms: The design was created in 1912 by Vincent Massey, likely with Alexander Scott Carter. The original colours were replaced by the University’s blue and white colours. Our name is reflected in the mace, which symbolizes royal authority, and the triangular shapes, which reflect mountains. Crest: The bighorn sheep is Alberta’s provincial animal and the book indicates the University is a place of learning. The dove alludes to our origins as a Methodist and United Church college. Motto — Quam bene non quantum: In place since the University’s foundation, the motto means, “How well, not how much.” Supporters: The cougars refer to the names of Mount Royal’s sports teams. The base of the Rockies and the maces refer to the University’s name. Original concept: Vincent Massey (arms) and Bruce Patterson, Deputy Chief Herald of Canada (crest, supporters and colours), assisted by the heralds of the Canadian Heraldic Authority. Painter: Linda Nicholson Calligrapher: Shirley Mangione

Award-winning poet Louise Bernice Halfe has shared a powerful testimony to the ongoing Indigenous experience of colonialism, along with the strong resilience of Indigenous storytellers. Born in Two Hills, Alberta, her Cree name is “Sky Dancer”. Halfe was raised on the Saddle Lake Indian Reserve and attended Blue Quills Residential School. She currently is an Elder with the University of Saskatchewan and an organization called Opikinawasowin (“raising our children”). Halfe made her debut as a poet in Writing the Circle: Native Women of Western Canada, an

acclaimed anthology of life-writings by Indigenous women. She has published five collections. Bear Bones & Feathers was a winner of the Canadian People’s Poet Award and a finalist for the Spirit of Saskatchewan Award. Blue Marrow was a finalist for the Governor General’s Award for Poetry, Pat Lowther Award and Saskatchewan Book of the Year Award. Burning in this Midnight Dream details Halfe’s response to Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation process and how the experiences of residential school children haunt those who survive and affect multiple generations. The book won three Saskatchewan Book Awards and the League of Canadian Poets Raymond Souster Award. A collection of her work, Sohkeyihta, contains poems written across the expanse of her career. Halfe is now serving a two-year appointment as the National Parliamentary Poet Laureate for Canada. She earned her Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Regina and certificates in Addiction Counselling from the Nechi Institute and holds honorary degrees from Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Saskatchewan.

Her drive for excellence continued with a legal career that now sees her representing diverse clients in civil litigation and advocacy, administrative law and high conflict family law at SilverbergLegal. She has received multiple awards, honours and distinctions for the impact she has had in policing and law, including recognition for her accomplishments in multi-racial, multicultural and Aboriginal communities and as an advocate for women’s rights.
