Iniskim Centre

The Iniskim Centre offers programs and services to increase the engagement and success of Indigenous students while also raising awareness of Indigenous peoples, cultures and history.

With any program you choose, the Iniskim Centre helps you prepare to succeed in your academic pursuits and future career. Our dedicated staff encourage you throughout your program of study, providing resources such as academic and cultural support, academic advising, writing support and scholarship information.

Indigenous Bridging Program

The Indigenous University Bridging Program (IUBP) is a university preparation program for students of Indigenous ancestry. The program helps you work towards your future educational goals through advanced academic upgrading, university preparation courses and the inclusion of Indigenous cultural content.

Throughout the program, you’ll be supported by the IUBP coordinator who can assist you with academic and personal advising, funding applications, tutorials, cultural and social support, and social events.

Student Success Program

To help you achieve your goals, the Student Success Program offers a range of resources for Indigenous students, including academic support, peer mentorship, counselling services, financial information, instructor office hours, workshops and tutorials. These services will help you feel comfortable asking instructors, support staff and tutors questions while meeting in a safe and encouraging environment.

BMO Indigenous Peer Mentorship Program

Through sharing of cultural traditions and values, the BMO Indigenous Peer Mentorship Program provides peer-to-peer mentorship experiences for Indigenous students at Mount Royal. This program empowers both the mentor and mentee to establish relationships and hone their academic skills through education, culture, community and wellness.

Career Services Indigenous Mentorship Program

Inspired by the Indigenous way of knowing, the Indigenous Mentorship Program connects you with a one-on-one mentor in a peaceful and organic way. Gain industry-specific knowledge and make professional connections to Indigenous and non-Indigenous industry while developing confidence, new skills and credibility.

Sponsorship

If you are a sponsored student approved to have your tuition and mandatory fees billed to a third party (employer/sponsoring agency — Advancing Futures/Band), please ensure all proper documentation is forwarded to Financial Services before each fee deadline.

Scholarships and bursaries

Mount Royal offers hundreds of awards based on academic success, your financial situation and extracurricular participation. Accepted Indigenous students are eligible for both general and Indigenous-specific scholarships and bursaries. Apply for awards from Nov. 1 to March 1.

Student loans

If you are receiving Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada/Band Funds, you can still apply for Government Student Loans should you require additional funding.

For residents of Alberta, you can apply for government loans online at studentaid.alberta.ca.

Indigenous Housing Program

The Indigenous Housing Program provides culturally supported and affordable single-room and family units for students who self-identify as First Nations, Métis, Non-status or Inuit. Students qualify for housing based on academic readiness, academic and career goals, and financial need.

You’ll be supported from application through to graduation, including help with navigating campus services and connecting with off-campus resources.

+ All First Nation, Métis, Non-status and Inuit students are encouraged to apply. If selected, the bursary reduces rent costs, and monthly programming helps connect students to the MRU community and resources in the City of Calgary. Don’t wait and inquire now! Bursaries and rooms are limited.

Mount Royal University is located in the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) and we recognize the people of the Treaty 7 region, which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut’ina and the Îyârhe Nakoda. We are situated on land where the Bow River meets the Elbow River. The traditional Blackfoot name of this place is Mohkinstsis, which we now call the City of Calgary. The City of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation.
