MRU

Welcome to our Festive Favourites concert series sponsored by our friends at United Active Living Communities! As we approach the holiday season, music becomes an increasingly festive accompaniment to day-to-day life. For me, the musical highlight of this special time is attendance at Mount Royal University Conservatory’s annual yuletide celebrations, Winter Fantasia and Sounds of the Season. It’s always a thrill to see the Bella Concert Hall stage filled with Mount Royal University choristers and orchestra members and to hear it come alive with an amazing array of music to celebrate the season. The season reminds us to stop, reflect, put life into perspective, to abandon restraint and embrace our own youthful spirit. I can think of no one who embodies a passion for life and who always greets you with a youthful smile and cheerful laugh than 91 year old Conservatory piano student, Mary Fenwick. We celebrate Mary and the example she sets performing “Hark the Herald” on piano with the Calgary Youth Orchestra and our choirs on the Sounds of the Season program. I would like to thank everyone for your support of music and speech arts education; for celebrating creativity and for championing artistic expression. Dr. Charles Webber, Dean Faculty of Continuing Education and Extension

MARY FENWICK Mary Fenwick doesn't have time to sit around. The energetic 91-year-old is too busy learning the piano, going to concerts and taking art classes. When she first arrived at United's Active Living's Garrison Green community five years ago, Mary rediscovered her love of piano. She hadn't touched a piano in more than 30 years, but the Steinway in the corner intrigued her, and she found she wanted to get back to those familiar keys. "I called the Mount Royal University Conservatory and asked them if they had a piano teacher who can teach someone who hasn't played in 30 or 40 years," said Mary. "Kathy Dornian offered to teach me. She is such a highly respected teacher and musician, I was thrilled. I practice now for two hours a day. She gave me a Chopin nocturne to start with, which is a challenge, but I'm getting there with it!" In tonight's Sounds of the Season concert, Mary will perform Hark the Herald Angels Sing on stage with the Calgary Youth Orchestra, choir and the Heebee-jeebees. "When Kathy suggested I take part in the concert, I thought I would simply be part of the choir, but when she suggested I play the piano, that was something else! I'm a little nervous about it, but I've been practicing every day so I'm confident I will give it my best. After all, it's Christmas!" Since starting lessons with Kathy, Mary has expanded her repertoire to include minuets by Beethoven and Bach, Voices of Spring by Strauss, and the Spanish love song, La Paloma. "I remember when I first started, someone asked me why I was taking up piano again at my age, and I replied that I wasn't doing it to become a concert pianist, I was doing it for my own joy, for my soul! And I'm getting so much fun from it," said Mary. Mary is very appreciative of the approach that United takes to encourage the arts - music, theatre, dance and painting. "That's why Garrison Green is such a great place to live. We have so much going on here. We go to the CPO, the opera, and they come here. And all of these things stimulate you," said Mary. One of the groups on stage will be Calgary's a capella group the Heebee-jeebees. "We're excited about this performance because we will have a very young performer in the Dec. 11 concert and Mary - our most mature performer - performing tonight," said Heebee-jeebee Jonathan Love. "It's all about the sharing of music, especially at Christmastime."

LAURA HYNES – FEATURED SOLOIST A Fulbright scholar in Paris, American coloratura soprano Laura Hynes spent six years abroad in France and Germany, performing repertoire ranging from baroque opera with Les Arts Florissants to "classical cabaret" on French television and radio. She has performed opera roles, solo recitals, and concerts throughout Europe and the U.S., in venues including New York's Alice Tully Hall, the Barbican in London, the Châtelet and the Cité de la Musique in Paris, as well as major venues in Seville, Brussels, Madrid, Lisbon, Frankfurt, Marseille, and Montepellier. In 2015, Hynes joined the performing arts faculty at the University of Calgary. Her research there focuses on innovation in art song recital and opera through social justice issues (Raise Your Voice) and interdisciplinary collaborative performance creation. She holds degrees from the University of Minnesota (DMA) where she was the Dominick Argento Fellow, the Paris Conservatory (Cycle de perfectionnement), the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (M.M.), and Miami University (B.M.). CALGARY YOUTH ORCHESTRA CALGARY YOUTH ORCHESTRA, considered the Conservatory’s flagship instrumental ensemble, is recognized as one of the finest youth orchestras in the country. The ensemble has worked with such illustrious conductors as Mario Bernardi, Bramwell Tovey, Kasuyoshi Akiyama, Simon Streatfeild, Ivars Taurins, Jeanne Lamon, and Hans Graf, among others. The CYO has performed in collaboration with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and with Jeunesse Classique Ballet, at festivals throughout Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Japan, and on-stage at the 2008 Juno Awards. The CYO was honoured to perform for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II during her visit to Calgary in May, 2005 as well as for the Council of the Federation in Banff in August, 2005. In September 2009, in recognition of His Holiness, the Dalai Lama’s visit to Calgary, the CYO performed at the Pengrowth Saddledome alongside members of the University of Calgary Orchestra. The orchestra has commissioned works from a number of composers, most recently Canadian composers Michael van der Sloot, George Fenwick, Laurie Radford and Trevor Mansell. The CYO has also presented the world premieres of works by Claude Debussy, completed and orchestrated by the renowned English musicologist Robert Orledge. CYO’s high artistic achievements have generated national and international reviews for its performances and for its recording entitled The Thrill of the Western.

In May 2017 the CYO will perform Beethoven’s Violin Concerto with internationally renowned violinist Andrés Cárdenas, and in February the orchestra will perform Mahler’s Second Symphony, in collaboration with the University of Calgary Orchestra and choruses. Edmond Agopian began his violin training in Constantza, Romania. After immigrating to Canada, he continued his studies at the University of Toronto (B.Mus.), the Juilliard School (M.Mus.) and the Masterplayers International Music Academy, Switzerland (Honours Diploma). In 1991, Mr. Agopian relinquished his post at Acadia University to take up positions as Professor of Violin at the University of Calgary, Conductor of the U of C Orchestra and Artist-inResidence at Mount Royal Conservatory. He was appointed Music Director of the Calgary Youth Orchestra in 2002. In 2005, Mr. Agopian was awarded the Alberta Centennial Medal “in recognition of outstanding achievement and service to the people and province of Alberta”. At the University of Calgary, he was awarded the John Peter Lee Roberts Distinguished Professorship in Fine Arts. Mr. Agopian’s students have won national and international awards and are members of every major orchestra in Canada, as well as many orchestras in the United States. He has been on the faculty of the Morningside Music Bridge program at Mount Royal University Conservatory since its inception in 1996, and is the founder and artistic director of the University of Calgary summer chamber music festival, Contrasts. For 13 years, he was the Music Director/Concertmaster of Calgary’s professional string orchestra, the Kensington Sinfonia. Conducting work has included performances with the Shanghai Opera Orchestra, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Canadian Chamber Orchestra, and yearly engagements with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. As a violinist, he has been regularly featured as soloist and chamber musician on regional and national CBC, French and English radio programs. A champion of Canadian music, Mr. Agopian has premiered numerous Canadian compositions in Canada, the U.S. and Taiwan. As founder and first violinist of the U of C Quartet in Residence, he is in the process of presenting and recording Shostakovich’s complete string quartet cycle — a first for Calgary.

MOUNT ROYAL ARTIO The name Artio is derived from the Celtic word for "bear," and was the name of a Gallo-Roman goddess who often took the form of a bear. She represented creative, bold and emergent abundance — all qualities that describe the singers who make up Mount Royal Artio and what they do. Artio specializes in choral music that is distinct, demanding, diverse and innovative. They explore a variety of genres from early music through to innovative creations being crafted by today’s composers. They re-imagine and re-invent music of the past and embrace the avant-garde music of tomorrow while continually seeking to push the boundaries of choral music and performance. Mount Royal Artio presents a final choral music performance each year that fuses music with innovative ideas and other art forms — “choral theatre” performances that highlight the season and give audiences exciting new performance presentations that draw upon the talent and imagination of the members. Mount Royal Artio’s performance art work “Sounds of the Hollow” will take place May 27 and 28, 2017. Jean-Louis Bleau has been very involved in the Calgary and area arts scene for a number of years, organizing numerous concerts and music festivals while maintaining a successful career as a choral conductor. He is the artistic director of Choral Programs at Mount Royal University, where he also directs Mount Royal Artio. In addition to his work at Mount Royal University, Bleau is the artistic director of Cum Vino Cantus and the University of Calgary Chamber Choir. Bleau's passion for music, especially choral music, is evident through his unique and expressive conducting style, and his enthusiastic approach to rehearsals. He is known for asking his choirs to engage difficult music, always seeking to push the members past their perceived limitations in order to produce music which — while challenging — is ultimately very rewarding. Bleau has always sought to push the boundaries of choral music and the concert experience through unique collaborations and concert events. This has resulted in performances around a lake in the heart of Kananaskis and concert events in a planetarium, parking garages, an industrial shop and even a swimming pool. He has worked to collaborate not only with other choirs but also a variety of musicians, choreographers, dancers, synchronized swimmers and aerial gymnasts.

"Frühlingsstimmen" (Voices of Spring) The lark rises into the blue skies, the balmy morning wind blowing; his sweet breath revives and kisses the field and the meadow. Spring, in all its sweet glory awakens, All hardship is over, Sadness flies far away! Sorrow is milder, thoughts are cheerful, Belief in happiness returns; Sunshine, you warm us, all is laughing, and awakes!

Ah, voices of spring sound like home, Yes, sweet sound, ah yes!

“Ah! quel dîner!” from La Périchole Ah! what a meal I've just had, And what extraordinary wine! I drank so much of it, so much, so much, That I am fairly certain that now I am a little tipsy. But shh! We must not let anyone know – Shh! If my speech is somewhat vague, If, while walking, I zigzag, If my eye wanders, Do not be astonished, because I am a little tipsy.
