MUSIC TO YOUR Conservatory Strings EARS

CONCERT SEASON 2016/17 Speech Arts and Drama

Message from

MRU

Welcome to our Festive Favourites concert series sponsored by our friends at United Active Living Communities! As we approach the holiday season, music becomes an increasingly festive accompaniment to day-to-day life. For me, the musical highlights of this special time is attendance at Mount Royal University Conservatory’s annual yuletide celebrations, Winter Fantasia and Sounds of the Season. It’s always a thrill to see the Bella Concert Hall stage filled with Mount Royal University choristers and orchestra members and to hear it come alive with an amazing array of music to celebrate the season. The season reminds us to stop, reflect, put life into perspective, to abandon restraint and embrace our own youthful spirit. I would like to thank everyone for your support of music and speech arts education; for celebrating creativity and for championing artistic expression. Happiest Holidays to you, Dr. Charles Webber, Dean Faculty of Continuing Education and Extension

OUR PERFORMERS

CONSERVATORY STRINGS The Mount Royal University's Conservatory Strings is an award-winning ensemble for advanced string players, ages 12 to 16. This orchestra performs music from the professional repertoire, and a high degree of commitment is expected. In addition to weekly rehearsals (Fridays, 4:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.), players participate in an annual workshop with a guest conductor. The Conservatory Strings have produced two CDs, and have been recorded by the CBC. CHRIS SANDVOSS Christopher Sandvoss was the founding violist of the acclaimed Land’s End Ensemble, UCalgary Quartet, and the 13th St. Trio. As a performer, Mr. Sandvoss has appeared as soloist with various orchestras, including the Windsor, New Westminster, Sault St. Marie and Red Deer Symphonies and appeared for three seasons with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. He has additionally enjoyed performing and improvising on the violin in many genres (blues, rock, swing, jazz, folk, etc.). As a dedicated educator, Mr. Sandvoss has taught at The University of Calgary, Mount Royal University, at various summer festivals across North America, and is currently the conductor for the MRU Conservatory Strings. Mr. Sandvoss also maintains an international reputation as an award winning luthier. His violins, violas, and cellos can be heard in the hands of some of today’s finest musicians.

OUR PERFORMERS

MOUNT ROYAL ARIETTA One of Mount Royal Conservatory's youngest choral groups, Arietta provides an opportunity for young singers to begin a life-long journey in music. Using choral repertoire, vocal and musical literacy is carefully developed, while allowing our singers to build social and emotional connections as they pursue musical excellence with new friends. Arietta regularly shares their gift of music with the Calgary community, and performs with the Mount Royal Conservatory's family of choirs on Calgary's finest stages. MOUNT ROYAL ARIOSO Provides singers aged 9-14 the opportunity to pursue and experience the challenge, joy and reward of singing the highest calibre of choral music. Exceptional musicianship instruction, varied performance opportunities, and touring from local to international, build community, social growth, and a passion for excellence. Arioso singers have shared the stage with international choirs, including the Vienna Boys' Choir, at the 2014 World Peace Choral Festival in Vienna, and have performed at the 2016 "Unisong Festival," celebrating Canada Day in Ottawa, Ontario. ELIZABETH PAYNTER Elizabeth Paynter has been a music specialist with the Calgary Board of Education for over 20 years and from early in her teaching career, began directing choirs in the Calgary choral community. Currently, Elizabeth is the artistic director of EnChor Chamber Choir, an auditioned vocal ensemble, One Accord, a 50 voice community choir, and she is the director of Music and Spiritual Arts at Scarboro United Church in Calgary, leading children, youth, jazz/gospel and chancel choirs. She is also in demand as a choral clinician in Alberta and British Columbia, and has

directed and accompanied choirs during Naramata Centre's "Music Week" summer program, where she is now on the advisory planning team. In recent years, Elizabeth directed the Calgary Multicultural Choir, and was the artistic director of the Calgary Men's Chorus. Elizabeth has had the privilege of working with some of Western Canada's top artists, including Corps Bara Dance, Foothills Brass, Fire Exit Theatre, Lily String Quartet, Cum Vino Cantus, singer/songwriter Paul Rumbolt, the University of Calgary Orchestra, and many choral directors from Alberta, British Columbia and the United States. Music is a family passion that she shares with her husband Graham, and their two children, Joshua and Rebecca.

THE CALGARY BOYS CHOIR Established in 1973, the award winning Calgary Boys’ Choir provides classical and contemporary vocal music education and performance opportunities for boys. Supported by highly-trained instructors, boys develop their musical and vocal talent, selfconfidence, presentation skills and leadership abilities through performance-based activities. In 2010, the Calgary Boys’ Choir became part of the Mount Royal Conservatory family of choirs and is now based at the new Taylor Centre for the Performing Arts. Last season the choir released a new CD called “Alive!” and took second place in the Canadian National Music Festival. Current Artistic Director, Paul Grindlay, has travelled and performed with the choir in England, France, Spain, Austria, the Czech Republic, Arizona, Oregon, Washington, and across

Alberta. The choir plans to collaborate and tour the West Coast with the British Columbia Boys Choir in July of 2017. The Calgary Boys’ Choir supports children’s causes including the Alberta Children’s Hospital, Kid’s Help Line and Ronald McDonald House. The choir and singers from the choir have performed at many major public events, including the 1988 Olympic Winter Games, Flames games, Vipers games, Lacrosse championships, Music Conference Alberta, and with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra. CHERI PETERS We are very pleased to announce our new Junior Choir director for the 2016-17 season (and hopefully for many subsequent seasons). We think that you and the boys will absolutely love Cheri. Cheri Peters, BMus/BEd, is a music specialist who has been teaching at both elementary and secondary levels since 1992. Cheri has enjoyed working as a conductor, teacher, presenter and accompanist, and has mentored a number of teachers/studentteachers in choral music and Orff techniques. Her ability to develop award winning choral groups comes from her dynamic, energetic passion for sharing the love and joy of music. Cheri has been working at Master’s Academy as a Music Specialist for 12 years, and has developed a wonderful Boys’ Choir at the school. That choir has sung in Calgary Boys’ Choir community concerts for the last two seasons and appears on our most recent “Alive!” CD. Cheri loves the tone quality of unchanged boys’ voices in a choral setting, and especially loves the energy and enthusiasm that boys have.

PAUL GRINDLAY Paul Grindlay has sung in choirs since he was nine years old. He has performed with such notable ensembles as The Phoenix Chamber Choir, Vancouver Cantata Singers, Vancouver Chamber Choir, musica intima, Tafelmusik Chamber Choir and Toronto Consort. He was a member of the 1990 National Youth Choir and the 1991 World Youth Choir. After completing a B.Sc. in zoology, then a B.Mus. in voice performance and opera, Paul pursued a solo vocal career which has taken him to Austria, Japan, England, the USA and across Canada to perform with opera companies, orchestras and choirs. He has recorded CDs of music for NAXOS Records, Marquis and Toccata Classics. Paul has been the Artistic Director of the Calgary Boys’ Choir since 2004. He is a founding member of VoiceScapes and Luminous Voices, a Music Associate at Knox Presbyterian Church and teaches voice at Mount Royal Conservatory of Music. Known especially for his work with male voices, Paul is in great demand as a performer, coach, conductor, clinician and adjudicator. In his spare time he indulges his love of fly-fishing, his family, the outdoors, cooking and poetry. SPEECH ARTS AND DRAMA The Conservatory’s Speech Arts and Drama program is known across Canada for its leadership in curriculum and programs. The program includes private instruction, group classes, ensembles and an annual non-competitive festival. Speech arts and drama training is a boost for shy children, a haven for children that love literature, and a magical outlet for children that are driven to perform. It gives students the confidence to speak, to communicate, and be heard.

Speech arts and drama is founded on training the speaking voice and performance of literature in forms including storytelling, verse-speaking and acting. Students gain a deep appreciation of literature and the power of language, and develop speaking abilities that carry into every aspect of their lives. JENNIFER ORR Jennifer Orr has been a member of the Mount Royal University Conservatory’s Speech Arts and Drama faculty since 1986, and the coordinator of the program since 1998. Jennifer maintains an active leadership role in the discipline of speech and drama, making contributions as a teacher, administrator, adjudicator, examiner, workshop clinician, and in the area of curriculum development. Jennifer specializes in teaching children and young adults and maintains a busy teaching schedule that includes a busy private studio, group lessons in creative drama and speech arts, and classes in speech arts theory. Jennifer is a member of the RCM Examinations College of Examiners for Speech Arts and Drama and was a member of the team that produced both the 2000 and the 2011 editions of the RCM Examinations Speech Arts and Drama syllabus.
