Early Childhood Programs Music with Your Baby For newborns to age 36 months Learn to provide an enriched environment of music and reading for your infant or toddler during these very important first years. Music with Your Baby creates a strong partnership among parent, teacher and child, where you play an important role in developing your child’s full potential. The greatest development of a child’s natural abilities takes place in an environment that is enriched by music and language. This program promotes confidence and self-esteem, increases focus and concentration, increases physical and aural awareness, and fosters a love of music, language and learning that will last throughout your child’s life.
Music & Movement For ages 3-4 Music & Movement (Eurhythmics) combines imaginative play, musical games, singing and instrument playing. Children use instruments and equipment such as xylophones, glockenspiels, hand drums, rhythm sticks, Orff instruments, balls, hoops and scarves. Creative movement is an important part of the program. Children develop coordination, concentration and self-confidence while learning the fundamentals of music. This program provides a sound basis for children who wish to continue the study of music or dance. Classes are 45 minutes long, held once a week and parents are involved.
Kodály Musicianship Preparatory through advanced classes, for ages 3-9 Kodály Musicianship classes create a playful atmosphere where children use the voice as their first instrument. Children are actively engaged as they develop music reading and writing skills that prepare budding musicians for future studies: –– in-tune singing –– beat, rhythm, melody, form –– phrasing, dynamics –– tempo and timbre Xylophones and rhythm instruments are used to reinforce concepts first heard through singing. In advanced levels, the recorder is introduced to reinforce music reading skills. Parental involvement is an essential component of the Kodály program. Parents join their children for the final ten minutes of each class and are encouraged to share musical activities at home. Children have weekly take-home activities to reinforce the lessons. NEW THIS YEAR: Classes specifically designed with home schooling families in mind. Classes are for multi-aged groupings in order to accommodate family needs.

Orff Music Preparatory, Basic and Orff Ensemble classes, for ages 3-8 Classes are based on things children like to do best — sing, chant rhymes, clap, dance and keep a beat. Our small class size, averaging 8 students, ensures that your child receives the best quality music education possible. The unity of music, speech and movement are essential teachings of Orff Schulwerk. Children progress from musical imitation to improvisation and literacy in a playful, holistic way, using their voices to speak and sing, and their bodies to move and dance. Their instincts are directed into learning music: first by hearing and making music, using nursery rhymes, finger games, songs and dances, then by reading and writing it when age appropriate. While they learn, they develop intellectual, motor, emotional and social skills. Children also learn to appreciate a wide variety of music from different cultures, eras and styles, and they will improvise and compose their own songs with the Orff instruments and play together as a group.
Early Childhood Strings For beginning violin or cello students ages 3-8 Starting bowed string instruments at an early age gives a great advantage. The Conservatory’s Early Childhood Strings Program features teachers with specialized skills to make lessons engaging and fun for young children while still developing a solid musical foundation. Children thrive in a supportive group setting where games and songs provide an enjoyable child-centered environment, learning through games, songs, solfege, rhythm, music reading and storytelling. After one to two years, depending on the individual child, they will be able to: –– play with good posture and physical setup –– exhibit good technical fundamentals –– exhibit a grounding in sound production, rhythm and solfege –– play simple melodies on their instruments –– properly care for their instruments
Children’s Cello For ages 3–9 Group cello classes are the perfect complement to private lessons for young cellists. Students will enjoy learning with others of the same age and playing
music and speech arts instruction for every person, every age, every level
ability in a positive, fun atmosphere. Music becomes a social activity where children are motivated by what they hear and see their friends doing. Individual technique is improved through scales, exercises and games. There are two levels: ages 3-6 and 7-9. Special emphasis is on intonation, sound quality, bow handling and posture. Reading and rhythm skills are emphasized. Ear training and music theory are introduced. Children have fun in duets, trios and more. This program provides performance opportunities well beyond the usual once-per-year recital with weekly “mini-concerts” and four recitals per year in which they perform group pieces and solos.
Speech Arts & Drama For ages 3+ Speech arts and drama is a boost for shy children, a haven for children that love literature, and a magical outlet for children that are driven to perform. It gives students the confidence to speak, communicate and be heard. They will benefit from the confidence and ability it offers for the rest of their lives. Rhymes and Rhythms: Classes for ages 3, 4 and 5. The developmental approach and small class size encourage young children to develop clear, expressive speech and confident communication. The class atmosphere is supportive and dynamic, allowing both shy and confident children to learn and grow. Children develop a love of literature as they explore “rhymes and rhythms” of nursery rhymes and poetry, responding to the literature physically, vocally and imaginatively through movement, storytelling and choral speaking. Drama games and role play activities stimulate the imagination, and promote problem solving and self esteem as children work collaboratively within the group. Act Up, Speak Out! Classes for ages 6-7, 8-9 and 10-12. Children have fun, build confidence and discover the power of the voice and the pleasure of language and literature in the creative, dynamic atmosphere. Imagination and creativity take centre stage as students explore a variety of contemporary and classic literature through creative drama, improvisation, storytelling and group performance. The collaborative, encouraging atmosphere is great for reluctant children and soon-to-be stars alike!
Suzuki Programs For ages 3+ All Conservatory Suzuki programs are endorsed by the Suzuki Association of the Americas and the European Suzuki Association, and deliver musical and instrumental instruction in accordance with the proven Suzuki method instructional philosophy: –– learning to play an instrument in the same way they learn to speak their native language with a step-by-step process based on listening, watching, and building their own “musical-instrumental vocabulary” –– supportive atmosphere, tailored to the learning pace of each child –– musical and instrumental skills gained though step-by-step learning –– learning instrumental skills before learning to read music and play simultaneously; –– individual attention in private lessons, and group learning in a positive social environment; –– parental involvement
You will attend all your child’s classes and be a practice coach at home. To prepare you for this role, you will participate in Suzuki training prior to your child’s first lessons.
Suzuki Guitar Every child can learn to play the guitar at a high level. Listening to recordings of guitar repertoire, parental involvement, group classes, daily practice and encouragement are key elements of the Suzuki method. Carefully chosen repertoire will enable your child to build excellent technique and musicianship from a solid foundation of musical awareness. To make studying classical guitar fun we play musical games and learn one step at a time. In addition to weekly lessons, your child will learn from other students in bi-monthly group classes and frequent recitals. These learning opportunities will further your child’s playing skills and motivation.
Suzuki Piano Piano students in the Suzuki Method learn music in a simple and direct way, similar to the way they learn to speak. Throughout the Suzuki growing process, your child thrives in an atmosphere of continual support and understanding. Every aspect of the Suzuki program is dedicated to the child — from repertoire, lesson length and seating at the instrument to the positive pedagogic approach. Parents participate actively, attending lessons and practicing with their child at home.
Suzuki Trumpet The first of its kind in North America and taught by the Conservatory’s Natalie DeJong, the first accredited Suzuki trumpet instructor in North America, this program will pilot the use of the first Suzuki trumpet book. The year-long program provides balance between working on musical literacy and gaining instrumental skills so that students develop the ability to read music and to play the instrument with beautiful tone and strong technique.

Music Group Classes Campfire Guitar Bootcamp Sections for ages 9-15 and for adults Learn to play a selection of songs in a relaxed group setting, with basic instruction on how to approach accompaniment and soloing. Songs are written in an easy to understand format to afford greater expression and to move through more material. Techniques explored include open position, barre and upper position chords, singing while playing, basic lead technique, arrangement and percussive accompaniment. Variations on how to expand those techniques ensure you have the opportunity to meet your personal goals.
Creative Music Ensemble For ages 13+ Open to any combination of instruments, this ensemble will create new music for performance. It will explore traditional and non-traditional practices (harmonies and forms), free improvisatory and structured approaches, and individual and group compositions. Requires playing skills at a minimum RCM Grade 6 level (or equivalent), or 3 years’ experience in a school band.
mandolin, bass, guitar, keyboard, banjo, even penny whistle! If you play an accompaniment instrument you must have chording experience and feel comfortable playing with other instruments.
FingerPickin’ For adults
Levels I & II, for ages 15+ Join our fun and easy-going group; learn to play basic chords to be able to play your favourite songs. Learn cool riffs from well-known songs and scales that are used in the solos of your favourite artists. No musical experience necessary.
FingerPickin’ class explores just that — finger picking — starting with simple accompaniment with basic patterns and expanding that to include patterns with ornaments. Techniques covered include arpeggiated accompaniment, hammer-ons and pull-offs, singing while playing, simple melodies with bass lines, and block chords with bass lines. There is consistency with the musical examples for this class and Campfire Guitar Bootcamp 101 so students enrolled in both will have an opportunity to refine their skills in a group setting.
Fiddle Classes with Donna Turk
Fretboard Harmony
Beginner, Intermediate & Advanced, for adults Designed for adults who have started the fiddle, but need some help to get to the next level. Work on improving your basic technique, add some traditional tunes to your repertoire and have some fun in our group classes as you develop your fiddle playing. Beginner Classes focus on basic fiddle playing techniques. There are many exercises to get your fingers and bow moving and then add these techniques to fiddle tunes. You should have some experience on the fiddle but still want to learn how to improve your tone and work on basic technique. Intermediate and Advanced Classes focus on different bowing patterns, developing technical skills like vibrato, learning different fiddling styles and touching base on back-up fiddle and harmony. You should be able to play well enough to focus on the music and not your instrument.
For adults
Beginner Guitar
Training in the idiomatic way the guitar works in all genres — from classical to country. The primary goal of the course is to explain rudimentary harmonic and melodic patterns used by the musicians we love and to unlock the mystery surrounding the recurrence of these patterns on the fretboard. Begin with fundamental musicianship training and expand that to the guitar. Topics explored include: the function of the notes in open position and pattern major scales; transposition; the location and function of major and minor triads in major keys; bass lines; diatonic and dominant chord progressions; pentatonic scales; harmonic and melodic voice leading.
Fiddlin’ with Friends
Toward the end of the course we will explore artistic ways to approach improvisation. There is consistency between the musical examples for this class and Campfire Guitar Bootcamp 101 so students have an opportunity to put the theory into practice.
For adults Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced fiddlers are welcomed into this class. There is a limit for each level so register early! Don’t play the fiddle? That’s okay too — we are looking for all instruments that accompany the fiddle:
This class is the first part of a curriculum that will be valuable for guitarists at a beginner to advanced level with any playing style. Reading standard notation is not required because this class approaches the music from a harmonic perspective as it relates to the fretboard.

music and speech arts instruction for every person, every age, every level

All instruments welcome.
Monday Night Jazz Guitar For intermediate to advanced guitar players ages 15+ Focusing on improvisation, applied theory and reading skills. Students need to bring their own guitars. Amps are supplied.
Music Theory, History & Composition For all ages. All theory classes are full year classes. The Conservatory offers group classes and private instruction in all theoretical and practical subjects, in accordance with the national standard as established by the Royal Conservatory of Music and Conservatory Canada. Not all Music Theory and History subjects or levels may be available as group classes each year, but instruction for all subjects at all grade levels is available at any time in private lessons:

Intermediate: A continuation of Basic Harmony, exploring the minor mode and introducing the process of modulation (changing key) and the use of 7th chords. “Life without playing music is inconceivable to me. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music... I get most joy in life out of music.” — Albert Einstein
Counterpoint

The Academy program affords gifted young musicians the opportunity to progress at an accelerated pace. Through regular performances, students gain valuable experience in a variety of settings for audiences of their peers, faculty members, clinicians and the public. The Academy’s reputation is known and respected throughout North America. Graduates who continue with their musical studies are much sought-after by leading post-secondary music schools in Canada, the United States and abroad.
Strings, Piano, Woodwinds, Brass & Percussion The Academy’s instrumental program is divided into four levels: Junior Academy: for students ages 6-12 who would benefit from the extensive technical enrichment provided at this level. Emphasis is on developing technical proficiency and musical skills; Intermediate Academy: for students between the ages of 8 and 14 who are playing advanced repertoire, but who are still developing their performance skills; Associate Academy: for students ages 10+ who are playing advanced repertoire (Grade 8 and up); and Senior Academy: for musically mature students ages 10-18 who are playing advanced repertoire. Students not placed into one of these levels may be considered for Academy Participant status.
Guitar The Academy guitar program is for enthusiastic, ambitious young players seeking a well-rounded music education. This cost-effective program is designed as a supplement to a student’s private guitar lessons, offering a group environment where they may further develop their playing ability, performance skills, theoretical foundation and overall musicianship. Wyatt Artist in Residence Program In music, as in other disciplines, artists often point to an educational encounter with, or transformational performance by a great artist as the inspiration for their commitment to a life in the performing arts. The Wyatt Artist in Residence Program strives to provide our Academy students with those transformational experiences, bringing them together with the very best mentors in their field and closing the loop between emerging talent and truly great artists of our time. This important component of the Academy for Gifted Youth was initiated by an anonymous supporter in honour of Hal Wyatt and his late wife, Marnie. Since its inception, the Wyatt program has afforded our students the opportunity to hear and study with an incredible array of true international stars in intimate masterclass settings. Past artists in residence include: James Ehnes, Nicola Benedetti and Ian Swensen, violin; Laurence Lesser, Lynn Harrell and Franz Helmerson, cello; Anton Kuerti, Gabriela Montero and Yuja Wang, piano; the Assad Brothers, guitar; Susanne Mentzer, Russell Braun and New York Polyphony, voice; and the New Orford and Vogler quartets. And it doesn’t end there. –– Music training leads to improved overall IQ, particularly in language and math –– Better emotional resilience –– Bolstered self confidence –– Improved attention and concentration –– Enhanced social skills and empathy

Speech Arts & Drama Speech arts and drama is both a remarkable artistic endeavour and a fundamental, empowering life skill. It is founded on two main areas of study: training the speaking voice, and performance and presentation in such forms as verse-speaking, acting, storytelling and public speaking. Students gain a deep appreciation of literature and the power of language, and develop clear thinking and speaking abilities that they will carry into every aspect of their lives. Speech arts and drama is for everyone. It is a boost for shy children, a haven for children that love literature and a magical outlet for children that are driven to perform. It gives students the confidence to speak, communicate, and be heard. Learners will develop confidence and ability they will benefit from for the rest of their lives. The Conservatory’s Speech Arts & Drama program is the largest in Canada, with faculty and programs recognized as the finest in the nation. Our teachers are professional speech instructors with backgrounds in speech, voice, literature and drama.
Group Classes Our group programs are suited for children new to speech arts and drama, as well as those with experience. Our small class sizes (5-10 children) suit children of particular age ranges. Children may enter the program at any age and will find the classes challenging and fun. Rhymes and Rhythms (for ages 3, 4 and 5): The developmental approach and small class size encourage young children to develop clear, expressive speech and confident communication. Act Up, Speak Out! (for ages 6-12): Have fun, build confidence, and discover the power of the voice and the pleasure of language and literature in a creative, dynamic atmosphere. Public Speaking for Children and Teens (for ages 9-15): Speak for yourself with energy, clarity and confidence and develop presentation skills crucial to success in today’s world. Speechworks: Enhanced speech and drama training and performance classes provide an exciting opportunity for students to experience the enriched content of private-lesson study in the dynamic atmosphere of a group class. The goal of the Speechworks program is excellence in personal performance. Speech Arts & Drama for Homeschoolers: This is a multi-dimensional exploration of literature, performance and voice development to develop authentic and artistic communication skills. Debate Club (grades 6-12): The perfect opportunity for students to explore and refine their debating skills, with our Junior and Senior Debate Clubs. Ye Olde Readers Theatre Company (for adults and seniors): Want to act, but hate memorizing lines? Carry your script on stage with you — it’s theatre, but it’s reading and it’s loads of fun.
Speech Arts & Drama Theory Beginning at the RCM Examinations Grade 7 level, you are required to successfully complete both a practical examination and the theory co-requisite to receive certificates. The Conservatory’s Speech Arts & Drama theory classes fully prepare you for these written theory examinations. Technical Theory: voice production, phonetics, performance techniques and the study of poetry and public speaking History and Literature: the history of poetry and drama.
Young Shakespeare Company This group is a fun, rewarding and challenging addition to private lessons for high-school-age students. Plays are an hour in length, the cast size is small and each student gets plenty of stage time through the innovative use of double and multiple casting of roles. Enjoy the camaraderie and excitement of taking the productions to local high schools, as well as giving public performances at MRU. The company rehearses once a week from October to the middle of February.
“We highly recommend the MRU Conservatory Speech Arts & Drama Program. For parents who want to see their child having fun while they develop confidence and the ability to clearly speak and present in front of one or 100 people this program is for you” — M. Copeland
