Chairman’s Message
This was a very special year for Mousetrap Theatre Projects – as you will see from reading this Annual Review. It was also a very special year for Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap, and for me as its Producer. The world’s longest running show celebrated 60 extraordinary years – our Diamond Jubilee. We celebrated in style by launching a 60 week UK Tour of the show, the first ever, and announcing that we would license 60 productions around the world. The UK tour will finish in late 2014 after nearly 90 weeks, travelling to Scotland, Wales, Ireland and throughout England, and it has broken records for theatre attendance, showing once again the power of theatre to transport and delight audience members. Our world-wide licensing has seen productions in every continent – and in very many languages.

We marked the actual anniversary with a Gala Performance directed by our Trustee Phyllida Lloyd which starred top British actors giving a staged reading, raising significant funds to support the vital work that Mousetrap Theatre Projects undertakes. Little did I think when the idea of a charity was just a glimmer in my eye that it would have such great impact on so many young people – some 13,000 in this year alone. I am tremendously proud of the work it does and grateful to all the staff who work so effectively and with such dedication under the leadership of Susan Whiddington. Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap remains an important financial supporter of the work of this wonderful theatre education charity that bears its name, and I am delighted that together we are introducing new generations to the power and magic of live theatre.

Take a look through our calendar and see what a busy year we had. This year we had a well and truly packed diary – we managed over 100 theatre trips for young people, schools and youth groups through our theatre access and audience development programmes. We organised 700 family theatre trips; ran 11 youth group drama projects and a summer school; we offered six in-depth Creative Learning projects; we ran creative training days for youth leaders and teachers and together with our partners managed the biggest yet, annual TheatreCraft careers day.

I hope you enjoy reading our third Annual Review and that it gives you a clear idea of the variety of projects and events we have offered this year to introduce young people to theatre and to engage them in positive experiences.
Adrian Lester “I was lucky as I got involved in theatre at 14 when I joined the Birmingham Youth Theatre – and loved the fact that for a few short hours we could take an audience anywhere. Every play I saw taught me something about people I would never meet. Mousetrap encourages young people to do the same. It takes them on a journey by giving them the opportunity to see theatre and learn the skill in daydreaming, the craft in making up stories. I was thrilled that Mousetrap organised young people to see two recent plays I was in – Red Velvet and Othello. I hope the young people that came enjoyed the journey.”
Following on from this productive year, we are encouraged to pursue more strategic forward planning. Up until now our growth has been fairly organic, but we now feel it is time to put into place a development plan to take Mousetrap Theatre Projects through the next three years. This plan is, in part, prompted by the need to move to a new office when our current lease expires in 2014. What could have been a big inconvenience turned into an opportunity when fortune pointed us in the direction of vacant premises next to the Apollo Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue. This newly refurbished 3-storey building gives us space to expand our staff, offering us the capacity to grow and develop our work. In addition to two floors of office space, there is a beautiful, naturally lit top floor to host a range of training sessions and workshops for young people, teachers and practitioners. Undertaking a full assessment of each of our 18 programmes, we have identified six programmes with the demand and potential to grow. To accomplish this growth, we pinpointed three areas requiring additional investment, not only to support planned development but to sustain current activity levels which have increased significantly over the last few years: • • •

We look forward to reporting back next year on our progress. Both in looking backwards and forward, I wish to acknowledge the enormous and valued support we receive from our Trustees under the dedicated leadership of our Chairman Stephen Waley-Cohen. A very warm thank you, too, to our loyal Theatre Guardians, Patrons, funders and the theatre industry for their generous support and belief in our work. However none of what has been achieved this year would be possible without the commitment, creativity and inspiration of my colleagues. To them, a huge thank you.

StageSeen
Creating a special West End experience for young people who are deaf and hard of hearing In 2013, StageSeen, our programme for deaf and hard of hearing young people, offered Shrek The Musical and Wicked with two performances of each show – one captioned and one interpreted in British Sign Language (BSL). Meeting the communication needs of StageSeen participants is complex as they have varying levels of hearing impairment. Some use spoken English; others do not. Some are accomplished at BSL; some do not sign at all. Trying to meet these needs is a tricky task for Jo Pelly, StageSeen Programme Manager, who arranges all communication support mechanisms, activities and resources to give the young people the best possible experience.
Each StageSeen day began with a drama workshop to explore the show’s themes and characters, led by deaf and hearing practitioners from Handprint Theatre Company. Having deaf adults involved in StageSeen has proved to be very valuable, providing young people with muchneeded deaf role models. The workshops were followed by the thrilling chance to go on stage to see the props, costumes and set up close. Finally everyone learned to ‘sign-sing’ a song from the show – ‘Defying Gravity’ at Wicked and ‘I’m a Believer’ at Shrek The Musical – performing it onstage for the cast.
Jo Pelly describes this very special moment at Wicked 35 deaf 11-18 year-olds are standing on stage performing a sign interpreted version of the show’s climactic song, Defying Gravity. Some look a little embarrassed, others are unsure of the signs, some look like they were born to do this. But the joy of performing the song is infectious and by the end we are all performing it with eyes shining.
It is a really moving moment, but what is perhaps even more captivating, are the faces of the adults in the audience: their teachers and parents and the cast of Wicked. Many have tears in their eyes. This is a unique chance for the cast to see the song given renewed meaning: “I’m through accepting limits/Cos someone says they’re so/Some things I
cannot change/But til I try I’ll never know…” After performing the song once, students teach the signs to the cast members who join in enthusiastically. As the actors take to the stage for their warm-up, they are visibly moved and overheard saying, “That was incredible. That was so inspiring.”

Inspiring students to write musical theatre StageSong teaches composition for musical theatre – with the aim of providing young musicians with the aspiration and skills to become the next Stephen Sondheim!

We enable students to learn directly from professional lyricists and composers who go into classrooms to share their knowledge and real life experiences. This year’s professionals’ credits ranged from musicals to community opera, song cycles to film scores.
The project culminated in a fantastic showcase at the St. James Theatre, featuring musical theatre professionals performing the students’ pieces which were on the themes of water, theme parks, exploring London and fairy tales.

StageSong kicked off with a teachers’ training day, taking them through a variety of song-writing techniques. The composers/lyricists each led six sessions in their assigned school, including one with professional singers, giving the students a chance to hear their compositions sung while still in draft form.

A panel of esteemed professionals critiqued the students’ work – composer and sound designer Adam Cork, critic Mark Shenton and West End performer Samuel Holmes. StageSong is very popular with teachers who see great benefits to their students’ composition skills and impact well beyond the duration of the project. Thamesmead School held a song writing competition and the teacher noted that the StageSong students “have really grown in confidence and ability as a result.” Students’ feedback demonstrated huge improvements in their confidence in their ability to compose songs, their general creativity and feeling empowered to write individually or in groups.

Family First Nights
Enabling families to attend top West End shows Family First Nights (FFN) gives families their first West End theatre experience for only £5 per ticket. 2013 was the 15th anniversary of this hugely successful Mousetrap programme. For many theatregoers, a cherished first memory of theatregoing is a visit with their family. MTP Director Susan Whiddington created FFN to give this special opportunity to families who find the price of West End theatre unaffordable and believe theatregoing is ‘not for us’. We piloted FFN in 1999 with 100 families from five Peabody Trust Estates who paid just £5 per ticket. We’ve moved on a lot since then, with 700 families taking part in summer 2013; however families still paid only £5 per ticket! We offered 31 productions and also ran participatory family workshops using themes from Stomp, Wicked, The Lion King and Barmy Britain. We believe the key to FFN’s success is our relationship with 500 partners – charities, community organisations, housing associations, social service agencies and supplementary schools. Our partners identify appropriate families, which can include parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and carers, but at least half the family group must be children aged 3-17.
We give the families huge support to tackle their uncertainties about theatregoing. We send directions on how to get to the theatre, show descriptions and information on what to expect, e.g. cost of programmes and ice cream – things familiar to regular theatregoers, but often a source of worry for first-timers. We telephone every family before their theatre trip to answer any questions.

Families can participate only once in our summer programme, but we stay in touch with them, sending regular theatre offers – 70 last year. Takeup is strong, as once families gain the confidence to attend theatre for the first time, they are keen to go again. They can be quite adventurous in their theatre choices, trying anything from opera to pantomime.

Offering independent theatregoing opportunities to 15-18 year olds
This year members of our C145 audience development programme – strictly for 15-18 year olds – made 1,641 theatre attendances through trips organised by MTP. Many of these young people first made a theatre visit with us through our TheatreOpeners programme for London state schools, or with their family when taking part in Family First Nights or with their youth club as part of a StageXchange project. We then encouraged them to join our free C145 programme so they could attend theatre independently with their friends or classmates.
Each month 100- 200 C145 members attended a fantastic show from Some Like It Hip Hop, to Chariots of Fire to Macbeth, directed by our Patron Jamie Lloyd. In addition to a £5 ticket, each event offered a special ‘behind the scenes’ talk where C145’ers came face to face with members of the cast and creative team such as the stars of A Chorus Line, the playwright David Wood and dancers from Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty.
We choose shows we think will appeal to the C145 age-group, as well as trying every now and then to stretch their taste a little and encourage them to attend something they might not otherwise have seen. Over the year they attended the following shows:

The 60th Anniversary of The Mousetrap was celebrated in style! Sunday 18 November 2012 was the 25,000th performance of Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap, celebrating an incredible 60 years in the West End. For this special Gala night, Trustee Phyllida Lloyd directed a star-studded cast in a staged reading of The Mousetrap at its home, the St Martin’s Theatre. Many of the invited audience members had seen the play before, but not with the illustrious cast of Hugh Bonneville, Nicholas Farrell, Iain Glenn, Tamsin Greig, Miranda Hart, Harry Lloyd, Patrick Stewart and Julie Walters! A Gala Committee of 36 Mousetrap supporters, chaired by Michèle Burrows, Alison Lurie and Rosie Hytner, created a very special event and a sell-out success.

The memorable performance was followed by a live auction with the ebullient Harry Dalmeny of Sotheby’s. Guests then proceeded to a Gala party at the exclusive Garrick Club where an army of volunteers from our Youth Forum and the sons and daughters of Committee members helped run a silent auction and a lucky dip of theatre tickets. The proceeds from the event, including generous support from Zurich Insurance and Gordon & Co., have made a huge difference to Mousetrap Theatre Projects. This Gala, together with a 60p donation on tickets to The Mousetrap – introduced for the diamond anniversary year – meant The Mousetrap helped to raise £213,000 for Mousetrap Theatre Projects.
Thank you to everyone who gave so generously to make this evening such a fantastic event – the chairs, their committee, the actors, the guests and all those who donated auction items and theatre tickets. Their support helped to make it a night to remember which raised a huge sum for Mousetrap Theatre Projects. Thank you.

Notes to the accounts Notes are in the full accounts available on the Charity Commission website or by contacting Mousetrap Theatre Projects Reserves Policy The Mousetrap Foundation for the Arts’ general reserves represents funds of the charity that are freely available, excluding designated funds and restricted funds. In order to provide a quality, effective and efficient service to its beneficiaries, the Trustees have set a reserves level that in the event of funding not being sufficient to cover expenses in the future that a smooth transition can be made to a lower level of service. The Trustees have a target of approximately six months of budgeted operating expenses, being £450,000 (2012: £350,000). Unrestricted reserves at 31 August 2013 are £448,230 (2012: £355,539).

When I directed James McAvoy in Macbeth, it was exciting to see so many Mousetrap kids at Trafalgar Tran sformed – many of whom were experiencing Sha kespeare for the very first time. Their commen ts and questions after the show were genuin ely insightful, inspiring and intriguing. I had the honour of opening TheatreCraft this year, too. It is a brilliant event that motivates you ng people interested in those all-important beh ind-thescenes roles. The energy in the Royal Opera House that day was infectious. Most recently, I collected an award at Mousetrap’s own Theatre Awards, voted for entirely by teenager s. The performances which took place at the ceremony by the young people were amazing. It was an uplifting evening. It’s vital that we nur ture the next generation of theatre makers and Mousetrap plays such a significant role in this. I’m totally proud to be a Patron.”
