Did You Know?

1. Wood is made up of a combination of living, dying, and dead cells. 2. The terms softwood and hardwood describe the leaves, seeds and structure of the trees rather than the type of wood they produce. 3. Wet wood, unlike dry wood, can conduct electricity. 4. Some trees talk to one another. When willows are threatened by insect pests, they emit a chemical warning to nearby trees, who secrete more tannin to put the invaders off. 5. The most common metal in the Earth’s soil is aluminium. However, in terms of the whole planet, iron is the absolute leader among metals since it makes the major share of the Earth’s core. 6. The word ‘metal’ derives from the Greek word ‘metallon,’ which means to mine, excavate or extract from the ground. 7. The first car accident occurred in 1891, in Ohio. 8. Swedens’s Volvo made the first three-point seatbelt design patent open and available to other car manufaacturers for free, in the interests of safety. It saves one life every 6 minutes. 9. During a car crash, 40% of drivers never even hit the brakes. 10. It is a criminal offence to drive around in a dirty car in Russia. 11. 75% of cars that Rolls-Royce has ever produced are still on the road today. 12. Many glass making terms have entered the language: e.g. Shut yer gob’: a molten lump of glass is called a ‘gob’ to which the glass blower attached a tube to blow the glass into shape. The blower had to blow hard which made his cheeks very large. Today someone with a big mouth is told they have a big gob.
