Working the City was a ten-day participatory photo project with eleven migrant women who live and sell sex in Hillbrow, an inner-city suburb of Johannesburg, located in the Gauteng Province, South Africa.
1. Nono, Self-portrait 2. Lety, Siyabonga on guard at the Twilight Children’s Shelter on Van der Merwe and Claim streets; a reminder of feeling safe and trusting Johannesburg. 3. Confidence, The first time, I came to Johannesburg I was dropped off by the taxi at the Coca Cola building. Every time I see it, it reminds me of my first time in the city of gold. 4. Mimi, Accommodation - An old lady selling her wares along Blanket street in Hillbrow with stickers on the wall behind her of people searching for accommodation. There is accommodation shortage in the area. The stickers are an eyesore as they destroy the clean image of the city.
