8 So here we are - 2012. And the great and the good are out in force to ensure the cinematic year gets off to a sterling start. Shot on Dartmoor, Steven Spielberg’s War Horse looks set to be a captivating take on Michael Morpurgo’s beautiful book, while Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar promises to be an insightful biopic which probes the life of the infamous head of the FBI. Even Madonna flexes her directorial muscle in the hotly anticipated W.E. As film studios scramble to give their big-hitters the 3D treatment, we examine the
technological phenomenon which has defined the modern cinematic landscape. Love it or hate it, there’s no doubting that the forthcoming 3D release of Star Wars: Episode 1 is sure to net a new generation of fans for the cult classic. But I, for one, am most excited about the return of the Muppets to the silver screen. All the favourites, from Kermit to Animal, are lined up to provide some top-notch comedic entertainment in the admittedly unimaginatively titled The Muppets. See you in the queue. Rebecca

The Big Picture Peter Delaunay, lecturer at Truro and Penwith College, looks forward – and back to this year’s Oscar ceremony As I write this in early December the announcement of the nominations for the 2012 Oscar ceremony is still nearly two months away, but the word does seem to be out that two films will figure strongly on awards’ night, Sunday 26th February. Woody Allen has been experiencing a critical resurrection with each of his last half dozen films; and this year’s ‘Midnight in Paris’ again set the critics all of a dither with “return to form” quotes and got everyone talking Oscar nominations again. Since 2000, Allen has returned to filming in New York City only once, for ‘Whatever Works’, though this was from a 1970’s script with the lead role taken by Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm) that had been written for the late great Zero Mostel (The Producers). The Plaza in Truro ran ‘Midnight in Paris’ for a week in its smallest screen (which was reasonably full) with some younger audience members perhaps drawn by Owen Wilson in the lead. Well, I hope they enjoyed it as much as I did – this was Allen at his thoughtful, witty, romantic best. ‘Annie Hall’ and ‘Manhattan’ plus a handful of his other NYC films are cultural signifiers – but some of his recent European works will, I think, last as well, perhaps even better. Allen is the Henry James de nos jours, and this is a period of America’s history that becomes in so many ways more resonant and meaningful by examining what Americans get up to abroad than what happens to them at home. Allen will probably be nominated for Best Screenplay (oh, you know, he has all those great Jewish one-liners) when in fact, the masterwork is his unity of writing,
production, casting and direction – he is, of course, an auteur…a filmmaker, and in a just world he would walk away with Best Picture. The hot tip for Best Foreign Language Film is ‘The Artist’: a French film that pays tribute to silent-era Hollywood – whatever next! I can’t tell you what I think of it because it hasn’t opened here yet. But just as ‘Midnight in Paris’ caught fire last year at Cannes, ‘The Artist’ won Best Actor for Jean Dujardin and had the critics jumping for joy. It’s a silent movie for an audience that’s hardly going to the cinema anymore. Meanwhile Martin Scorsese has been celebrating the birth of cinema with ‘Hugo’. Now if that gets a nod at the Oscars then we really will be looking back at several Golden Ages of Cinema. And in the section of the Oscar programme when the Academy looks back at those we lost this year two great British Oscar winners, Ken Russell (Glenda Jackson for ‘Women in Love’) and Shelagh Delaney (‘A Taste of Honey’) will be remembered. If you care about British film look on YouTube and find Russell’s BBC documentary on Delaney and her Salford home town: it’s as though fifty years ago they had written their own epitaphs. And while you’re there find Lindsay Anderson’s ‘White Bus’, scripted by Delaney. Oh yes, they’re there – that’s the beauty of the internet, it’s all available. But you know, sometimes I miss the Academy in Oxford Street where I first discovered cinema. It’s a Marks & Spencer’s now, you know. That’s time for you, always creeping up.

The BeST eXOTIC MARIGOLD hOTeL 8 Director John Madden, best known for his work on the Academy Award-winning Shakespeare in Love, is poised to deliver heart-warming entertainment in his upcoming film, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Based on the novel These Foolish Things by Deborah Moggach, the film follows a group of British retirees who decide to take their retirement overseas. Attracted by sumptuous advertisements, they travel to India where they expect to find the luxurious Marigold Hotel waiting for them. Unfortunately for them, they find the hotel is in a state of disrepair far removed from the lavish implications of the advertisements. Thankfully, the travellers soon find other wonders to captivate their attention as they each begin their own journey of self-discovery. Starring an impressive cast including Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson and Slumdog Millionaire’s Dev Patel, this comedy-drama promises to be a charming and humorous adventure for those looking for light and uplifting entertainment. 8 Set in the 1930s Arab states at the dawn of the oil boom, the story centers on a young Arab prince torn between allegiance to his conservative father and modern, liberal father-in-law. The victorious Nesib (Banderas), Emir of Hobeika, lays down his peace terms to his rival Amar (Strong), Sultan of Salmaah. The two men agree that neither can lay claim to the area of no man’s land between them called The Yellow Belt. In return, Nesib will adopt Amar’s two boys Saleeh and Auda as a guarantee that neither man can invade the other. Twelve years later, Saleeh and Auda have grown into young men. Saleeh, the warrior, itches to escape his gilded cage and return to his father’s land. Auda cares only for books and the pursuit of knowledge. One day, their adopted father Nesib is visited by an American from Texas. He tells the Emir that his land is blessed with oil and promises him riches beyond his wildest imagination. There is only one problem. The precious oil is located in the Yellow Belt. Craig May

D
uring the 1950s, 3D cinema experienced what many perceive as its golden era. american teens would take a ride to their local picture house, order a soda and popcorn, cuddle up with their sweetheart or beau, and gaze upwards in anticipation of the awesome three-dimensional delights that awaited them. Initially 3D was a novelty only fit for the monster movie matinée; Invaders from Mars and Creature from the black Lagoon would evoke shrieks of joy and screams of fear from the sea of teens who sat before them, all adorned in classic red and cyan cardboard glasses. Today, the scenario may be similar: boyfriends and girlfriends seeking out gory shocks, parents and children searching for Technicolor wonderlands and everybody else lining up to see this summer’s ‘must-see’ blockbuster - except what was once a cheap thrill on a Saturday night is now being heralded as either the saviour of cinema or demonised as a celluloid assassin sent to strip ‘cinema the art form’ of all integrity. 3D technologies have existed for almost a century, yet today the argument of whether their implementation is of any value has never been so fiercely debated dividing audiences, filmmakers and
Star warS: epiSoDe 1
critics alike. One of 3D’s biggest criticisms lies in its emphasis upon style over substance, a trend which has proved unavoidable when much of its resurgence and transition into the mainstream has been choreographed by aesthetic exhibitionists such as james Cameron. Cameron’s visual tour de force, avatar, was undoubtedly a benchmark of 3D cinema’s box office success and aesthetic capabilities, yet the film’s worldwide impact opened the doors for numerous lacklustre followers to ride upon its coattails, leaving audiences with sore eyes, empty pockets and a bitter taste in their mouths. The critiques grew more damning, even big hitters such as The Dark Knight and Inception director Christopher nolan dismissed 3D as technologically inadequate and a necessary evil enforced by film studios. yet finally, after some initial teething pains, 3D has seemingly found its stride. Martin Scorsese’s Hugo was perhaps 3D cinema’s most legitimate outing to date, the narrative itself an ode to the ‘cinemagician’ whom many consider the godfather of special effects, George Méliès. Scorsese succeeded where many others had failed, establishing a spiritual connection between the classic and contemporary. The fact that the auteur embraced 3D and delivered, despite what many presumed would be a blot on
one of the most celebrated filmographies in history, proves greatly encouraging for the artistic credentials of the technology. Scorsese himself stated: “every shot is rethinking cinema, rethinking narrative and how to tell a story with a picture”. This meeting of classic and contemporary has never been more evident than in the upcoming 3D re-release of George Lucas’s Star Wars saga in its entirety, a subject which, true to form, has caused much controversy and debate amongst fans of the original films. Is Lucas’s 3D treatment of The Star Wars Trilogy a cynical exercise in profiteering or a means of allowing new generations to discover those classic films in a whole new spectacular light? at their time of release, Lucas made huge developments in surround sound just to ensure the soundtracks of his original trilogy were heard at their full potential; doesn’t it make sense that this cinematic pioneer would continue to embrace emerging technologies? Directors such as Cameron, Lucas and Scorsese would argue that 3D technology is far more than a superficial whim devised with marketing in mind but a legitimate and progressive technology offering audiences a feast for their eyes and a level of immersion never before felt. Don’t you want to feel the force as lightsabers buzz and hum inches from your face, or embrace the dark side as smouldering

chunks of rebel alliance cruisers fly past your very eyes? Take those much loved Disney tales that currently reside upon mouldy VHS tapes buried in the attic the 3D treatment allows them to be restored, reinvigorated and ultimately resurrected upon the big screen, perpetuated for generation after generation to experience and grow to love. even the innovator of these technologies, james Cameron, is revisiting his seminal 1997 film Titanic, rendering huge, seemingly unmissable yet tragically unavoidable, 3D icebergs at this very moment. 3D’s ability to craft a sensory experience, which the click of a mouse and a dubious download cannot replicate, alongside its ability to greatly prolong the shelf life of popular classics explains why Hollywood Studios are investing so much time and resources into this ever-evolving technology. upon today’s media landscape it is a case of survival of the fittest and 3D is allowing cinema to outrun its greatest predators - illegal downloads, piracy and dwindling audiences - whilst offering something exclusive and exciting. The glasses may not be cardboard anymore, but if 3D cinema continues to find itself in the right hands, we may experience that golden era all over again. Star Wars: Episode 1 is released in 3D 3on 9th February 2012.

Director roman Polanski Starring jodie foster, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz release date 3 February CONtENt icons
8 The latest dramedy from controversial director roman Polanski stars the crème de le crème of acting talent, with credentials in both Hollywood and the indie circle. based on yasmina reza’s play God of Carnage, the film’s script follows its predecessor’s example of unfolding within a single location and in real time. Parents nancy and alan Cowan (Winslet, Waltz) and Penelope and Michael Longstreet (foster, reilly) come together for the sake of their children after a fight breaks out at school. Where Polanski’s film really finds an impact is in the breakdown of the parents’ façade. both couples are initially polite, upper middle class people who just want what’s best for their children. but once everything starts unravelling, marital problems and issues of parenthood come to the fore and all hell breaks loose. expect to hear plenty about this film during the upcoming awards season. Its principle cast has twelve academy award nominations between them (including four wins) and film composer alexandre Desplat has worked on such recent hits as Harry Potter and last year’s multiple academy award winner, The King’s Speech. coRiolAnUS 8 adapted from Shakespeare’s much overlooked work of the same name, Coriolanus depicts the bloody rise and fall of infamous roman General Gaius Marcius ‘Coriolanus’. Simultaneously making his directorial debut and starring as the provocative leader, academy award nominee ralph fiennes has re-imagined the playwright’s visceral tale of war and treason with a contemporary edge, promising to retain its nuanced storytelling whilst exhibiting violent bouts upon a modern stage. In an attempt to gain public favour and attain the exalted position of consul, Coriolanus begrudgingly ingratiates himself amongst the unclean masses. When his disingenuous plan backfires, Coriolanus is exiled from rome, leading him to unite with once sworn enemy Tullus aufidius (butler) and plot swift and merciless revenge upon his former home. fiennes’ stark visions of urban warfare, bolstered by the tale’s classical origins, are sure to be both confrontational and dramatically grandiose. alongside action stalwart Gerard butler and the Tree of Life’s jessica Chastain, Coriolanus is set to dissect the heart and soul of a Shakespearian classic, stitch it back together inside Kevlar body armour and go to war in this year’s first milestone of cinematic triumph. 8 Keira Knightley wasted no time in directing media attention to the more controversial aspects of David Cronenberg’s latest by announcing how unnerved she felt during the film’s spanking scenes with Michael fassbender - a move sure to send a certain breed of moviegoer to the cinema for just that reason. based on a stage play by Christopher Hampton, also starring is Viggo Mortensen in his third outing with Cronenberg, following a History of Violence (2005) and eastern Promises (2007). fassbender plays up-and-coming psychoanalyst Carl jung whose successful experiments using freud’s ‘talking cure’ on disturbed russian patient Sabina Spielrein (Knightley) led him to a working relationship with freud himself. as his friendship with freud grows in intensity, the married jung simultaneously enters into a passionate affair with Sabina, whose aims are to become a psychotherapist as well. Though freud initially views jung as his disciple, cracks appear in their partnership as jung delves into mysticism and the paranormal, undermining freud’s desire for his methods to be seen as scientific. expect thought-provoking performances from the three leads on a journey into the unconscious mind. 8 Matt King (Clooney) is a self-proclaimed back-up parent. When his wife suffers a boating accident, he finds he is not ready for the daunting task of parental guidance. failing abysmally to deal with his difficult daughters, he begins to realise that he doesn’t know his family quite as well as he thought he did. His ignorance is finally exposed when his eldest daughter breaks it to him that his wife was cheating on him. Intent on finding the ‘other man’ in his wife’s life, King, a Hawaiian land baron, takes his daughters on a journey from Oahu to Kauai and begins to educate them about their ancestors, from whom the land has been passed down. envisioned by alexander Payne, the director of Sideways and about Schmidt, The Descendants presents us with a series of flawed characters. although beautifully shot, and with equally attractive locations, these are merely aesthetic benefits of a deep film, which is at times both witty and tragic, with one very dysfunctional family at its heart. 8 nicolas Cage returns as the spirit of vengeance with this sequel to 2007’s Ghost rider, brought to us from the creators of Crank, Mark neveldine and brian Taylor. johnny blaze (Cage) tries to hide from his curse and the rest of humanity in a remote eastern european village. but then he discovers the devil wants to claim his son, and he’s forced to do battle once more. Taking a step up from its predecessor, this second Ghost rider film features stuntman-turned-gent-ofchaos johnny blaze developing his array of fire-based powers to include both vomiting and urinating flames. The action-obsessed duo of neveldine and Taylor have included the same level of manic pacing and exploding cars that made Crank such a genre favourite. The filmmakers don’t see it as a sequel rather a film that stands on its own merit and should completely relaunch the Ghost rider franchise. With the increase in special effects and action set pieces, this could well be the case. Ian Martin

8 If the winter isn’t serving up enough snow and chilly weather for your tastes, you may want to check out director joe Carnahan’s latest action flick, The Grey. reuniting Carnahan with producer ridley Scott and actor Liam neeson - both of whom worked with him on the recent remake of The a-Team - The Grey tells a tale of desperate survival set in the cold vastness of alaska. neeson takes on the role of Ottway, the head of security for an oil drilling installation deep in the alaskan wilderness. Ottway finds his skills put to the test when a plane crash puts him and his work colleagues in a life or death situation. Stranded near the wreckage of their plane with nothing but snow in every direction, the survivors realise no help is coming. Having decided to set out and lead his group to safety, Ottway must overcome the dangers of the terrain. The situation is made graver when a pack of wolves attacks the group, forcing Ottway to use all his skills to survive. The Grey offers an intense and atmospheric piece of action storytelling to kick-start 2012. Kit Goodliffe

8 More often than not, the filmic ventures of professional wrestlers and fighters consist of a lacklustre, straightto-DVD action flick, all served up with as many cheesy one-liners as their Spartan physiques can muster. Who can forget Hulk Hogan’s Mr. nanny or ufC champ randy Couture’s outing in The expendables. Thankfully director Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s eleven, Contagion) has decided to buck this trend and enlisted MMa vixen Gina Carano to help him do so. The female force of nature plays the smart, sexy and extremely dangerous Mallory, a spy tasked with carrying out duties which governments can’t authorise and heads of state would rather not know about. after she is double crossed by the agency which trained her, Mallory must evade an international manhunt, protect her family and exact revenge upon her betrayers. Soderbergh’s soft spot for star-powered ensemble casts is once again evident with a supporting troupe including ewan McGregor, Michael fassbender, Channing Tatum and many more high profile faces. Can Haywire land a knockout punch at the box office? I wouldn’t bet against it. Brody Rossiter

8 Directed by Mamma Mia’s Phyllida Lloyd, The Iron Lady is already securing plenty of attention prior to its release. nobody needs a degree in politics to know who the titular female is - here embodied by Meryl Streep in a depiction of her rise to a reign of power that lasted for more than a decade. Margaret Thatcher might still be a controversial figure, but nobody can deny her influence and importance in being the first woman to become Prime Minister of the united Kingdom. Her journey wasn’t easy and saw her shatter barriers of class and gender to rise to the fore in a male-dominated world. The film has been at the centre of much controversy due to its focus on the price Thatcher paid for her power and its depiction of her suffering from alzheimer’s. regardless of the focus, it is almost a certainty that The Iron Lady will win academy awards - if not for the film itself, then certainly for Streep’s tour-de-force performance. 8 j. edgar Hoover has been undeniably one of the most important figureheads to exist in the relatively short history of the united States of america. as the first Director of the federal bureau of Investigation (fbI) for almost 50 years, Hoover was both feared and admired, cleverly building and shaping the efficient crime-fighting agency we have come to know today. but behind closed doors, he held secrets that would have destroyed his untouchable image, career and life. j. edgar tells the incredible story of Hoover’s life at the bureau, beginning in 1919 when he was just a simple office man and ending in the 1970s with his death. Headlining this must-see biopic is the alwaysimpressive Leonardo DiCaprio, supported in turn by armie Hammer (The Social network), naomi Watts (King Kong) and judi Dench (notes on a Scandal). With academy award-winning director Clint eastwood at the helm of a Dustin Lance black script - the man behind the tremendous 2008 film Milk - all the film’s ingredients point towards a veritable feast of cinematic excellence, ready to be served up just in time for awards season. 8 What better way to face the current economic situation than to watch an all-star cast depict how it all went down? Set in 2008 on the brink of financial meltdown, this directorial debut by J.C. Chandor gives a fictionalised account of the disastrous 24-hours in a Manhattan investment firm, just after information of epic magnitude is passed from a senior riskmanagement executive (Tucci) to a junior analyst (Quinto) on a USB stick, as the elder is told to clear out. What follows is a compelling and timely thriller posing questions of morality through the lens of corporate behaviour. Cheyenne Hill

8 If you enjoy tense thrillers such as Phone Booth and Inside Man, you’ll love this film from newbie director Asger Leth. Sam Worthington stars as, well, a man on a ledge. But as police psychologist Lydia Anderson (Banks) tries to talk him down, the biggest diamond heist ever committed is also taking place. Could there be a connection? With a principle cast made up of people you usually see in supporting roles, it’s refreshing to see such stars as Jamie Bell and Anthony Mackie get to stretch their acting talents. Emma Farley
8 Dwayne ‘The rock’ Johnson ventures into family film territory again in the sequel to 2008’s Journey to the Centre of the Earth. rather than the centre of the Earth, this time Sean Anderson (Hutcherson) and his mum’s new boyfriend travel to - wait for it - a mysterious island, in search of Sean’s grandfather (Caine) who’s thought to have gone missing there. Dwayne Johnson has found a niche in kids’ flicks, following in the footsteps of several other wrestlers in times gone by. It’s a given that children will love this. Matthew Brigden

8 Get ready for another Adam Sandler and Dennis Dugan movie (Big Daddy, I now Pronounce you Chuck And Larry). you either love them or hate them, and it’ll be the same case with Jack and Jill. Jack Sadelstein is preparing for Thanksgiving, a time that he dreads each year. His sister, Jill, who’s a needy passive-aggressive, always comes to stay. Usually that’s bad enough - but this year she refuses to leave. Adam Sandler joins the long list of comedians who have donned a frock to play a woman. nobody can deny it’s a sight they’re intrigued to see.

After learning that the monster is harmless, they enlist the help of cabaret starlet Lucille (Paradis) and a scientist to save the monster from the city’s police chief. UnDERWORlD: UNDERWORLD: AWAKEninG AWAKENING (3D) 8 Vampires should not sparkle. They should not have quiffy hair, attend high school or spend an entire trilogy trying to hide a trumped up case of performance anxiety. Vampires should kill things. They should have job titles like ‘Death Dealer’, carry Glocks loaded with silver bullets and deliver heavily enunciated english accents. unlike recent vampire franchises, underworld has always maintained these wonderfully gratuitous criteria. In 2003, it surpassed blade as the action/ thriller/vampire picture of choice: a modern gothic world with lots of leather jackets, Kate beckinsale in a skin-tight catsuit and Matrix-style gunfights. now awakening (the fourth in the series) sees a pause in the age-old conflict between vampires and lycans (werewolves) - humans have discovered the existence of both sides and are intent upon wiping them out. The inclusion of screenwriter j. Michael Straczynski (scribe for forthcoming brad Pitt movie World War Z and jolie Oscar-hunter Changeling) should finally see underworld have dialogue to match the quality of its action - in which vampires, werewolves and humans will all die in glorious, balletic gunfire. a new war begins here - not a twinkly, cross-species love triangle. 8 What would you do if you lost five years of your life? and how do you make someone who has no recollection of you fall in love with you all over again? based on real events, this moving romantic drama is sure to see rachel Mcadams and Channing Tatum smoulder on the silver screen. We fell in love with Tatum in Dear john and we fell for Mcadams in The notebook - and the chemistry in The Vow is set to be nothing short of convincing. Paige (Mcadams) and Leo (Tatum) fall in love and marry. They have just commenced on married life together when Paige falls into a coma after a car accident. When she wakes up five years later, she has no idea who Leo is, and he must find a way to bring her back to him and restore the love that was there before. released on Valentine’s Day, this sweet story of romance is the perfect way to wile away a starryeyed evening. no doubt I’ll be the only single girl sat amongst a cinema of couples, armed with some bars of chocolate and a box of tissues. W.E. 8 In 1936, the nation was turned upside down by a forbidden love affair. In the hotly anticipated W.e., the captivating story of King edward VIII and Wallis Simpson is told from a fresh perspective by Madonna, who takes directing and screenwriting credits, and a stellar cast including abbie Cornish, james D’arcy and andrea riseborough. The tales of two women run parallel to each other in this engrossing drama. In 1998, lonely new yorker Wally Winthrop (Cornish) becomes enchanted by the famous story of the love and obsession which developed between the monarch (D’arcy) and american divorcée Simpson (riseborough). jumping back and forth in time, Wally’s research takes her from the glamorous ‘30s and the starry-eyed early days of their romance to the allconsuming passion which led to the King’s scandalous abdication of the british throne, before probing the darker days that followed in subsequent decades. Will Madonna grasp the intensity of this compelling love story and the national turmoil it stirred? for the glamour and stunning performance by andrea riseborough alone, it is surely worth taking this tantalising trip back in time. 8 Young London lawyer Arthur Kipps (Radcliffe) is forced to leave his young son and travel to a remote village to attend to the affairs of the recently deceased owner of Eel Marsh House. But the mysterious deaths of the local children hint at something darker lurking in the village. Kipps soon discovers that the locals are being terrorised by the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman (and we all know hell hath no fury than one of them). The stage version of Susan Hill’s original novel has been terrifying London theatregoers for ages, so the decision to take it to the screen, and by legendary horror company Hammer no less, makes perfect sense. Leaving the role of Harry Potter firmly behind him, Daniel Radcliffe will, by himself, have to come face to face with all things that go bump in the night. With Jane Goldman (Kick Ass) on scripting duties and James Watkins (Eden Lake) directing, The Woman In Black is set to be one cool and scary ride. Ian Martin

8 From Diablo Cody and Jason Reitman, the fantastic writer-director combo who brought us Juno, comes a comedy about a bitter divorcee who returns to her hometown in order to rekindle her romance with her high school boyfriend. But don’t go to the cinema expecting a girly rom-com - Young Adult is the anti-romantic comedy. Young Adult is the Mean Girls for grown-ups as Charlize Theron’s Mavis is the girl we all love to hate. The former school queen bee, she grows up to become a 30-something who realises she peaked in her teens and tries to recapture her youth. Theron has earned rave reviews for her comedic role as a home-wrecking bitch who will stop at nothing to win back her ex who is now married with kids. It’s rare for a film to feature a protagonist that the viewer doesn’t root for, yet Diablo Cody has a knack for writing strong female characters that you won’t have seen on the big screen before - Ellen Page’s Juno, Amanda Seyfried’s Needy in Jennifer’s Body and Toni Collette in the hit US show The United States of Tara. This is just the ticket for banishing the winter blues. Emma Farley
