O
nce upon a time, 26 years ago to be exact, Beauty And The Beast became one of Disney’s greatest successes, the first animated film to be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, and still remains a cherished favourite for many film lovers today. Disney’s fifth live-action reimagining refashions the beloved characters and unforgettable songs from the well-worn VHS so many grew up with to enchant an entirely new generation of cinemagoers. Much like directors Tim Burton (Alice In Wonderland), Robert Stromberg (Maleficent), Kenneth Branagh (Cinderella), and Jon Favreau (The Jungle Book) before him, Bill Condon has saturated the classic iconography of the animated original with modern visual effects and a contemporary ensemble to ensure his musical conjures a magical atmosphere of its own. From the bewitching title track and beautiful “Something There,” to catchier classics “Gaston” and “Be Our Guest,” original songs are refreshed and performed alongside three never-before-heard tracks from the entire cast and singers Ariana Grande, John Legend, Céline Dion, and Josh Groban. But these alterations, whether giving treasured characters an extra dimension, singing new songs, or creating new scenes, will honour and enhance Disney’s classic fairytale and ensure this tale is worth revisiting time and time again.

n the 16 years since they began, the Fast & Furious crew have shifted from buccaneering street-racers to globe-trotting, anti-terrorism mercenaries. They’ve faced death-defying stunts, ruthless enemies, and the tragic loss of a brother, but the close-knit family has stayed together through it all. UNTIL NOW In the most dramatic twist yet, Dom betrays his band of brothers and joins forces with high-tech terrorist Cipher;

the franchises’ first female villain and most fatal of femme fatales. As Letty and the crew try to make sense of the chaos while the imprisoned Hobbs squares off with his new cellmate, Deckard Shaw - the vengeful ex-Special Forces killer Hobbs locked up - in steps Mr. Nobody with a unique solution to all of their problems. Armed with new cars, new weapons, and a new ally, the crew face their ultimate test as they embark on a global chase that takes them from New York’s tightly packed streets to the vast, frozen tundra of the Arctic Circle. Just when you think every narrative thread has been exhausted, the franchise goes faster and more furious than ever to prove there’s still plenty of gas in the tank.
A GRAND TOUR Location has always been a key feature of the Fast & Furious films as it not only represents the franchise’s multiculturalism, but also opens the door to more jawdropping stunts as the filmmakers continue to push the limits of the action genre. With its roots embedded in Los Angeles’ street racing culture, the action behemoth has since taken its show on the road to share its action exploits with some of the world’s most famous cities: Tokyo, Rio, London, Abu Dhabi, and New York. Over 8 films, the Fast & Furious franchise has visited exotic and exciting locations, and the eighth instalment sees the franchise make history by becoming the first Hollywood production to be filmed on location in Cuba.

RELEASE DATE 10 MARCH / Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts / Starring Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson / Genre Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi 1933 - KING KONG Kong’s big screen debut left audiences terrified thanks to its lifelike use of stop motion animation and is still considered one of the greatest films ever made.
1962 - KING KONG VS. GODZILLA The meeting of two of cinema’s most intimidating forces caused cinematic chaos in 1960s Japan, selling over 11 million tickets during its initial cinematic run. A second earthshattering showdown is tentatively scheduled for 2020.
2005 - KING KONG Lord Of The Rings director Peter Jackson revitalised Kong with a classical story augmented by stateof-the-art special effects. The film received critical acclaim but added little to Kong’s lore beyond a multimillion dollar lick of paint. It’s the last we’ve seen of Kong…until now.

hen it comes to fictional beasts, few are greater than King Kong. The fearsome creature has smashed a gloriously destructive path throughout some of the most monstrous storytelling of the last hundred years. However, modern incarnations of the Eighth Wonder of the World have failed to strike shock and awe into cinemagoers in the same manner as Kong’s big screen debut back in 1933. Decades of spectacular monster movies packed with cataclysmic set pieces and big-budget bluster
KONG: SKULL ISLAND
undoubtedly lessened Kong’s impact onscreen. Luckily, Jordan Vogt-Roberts, an indie director with grand ambitions, has climbed aboard the latest voyage to the beast’s mythic homeland. The promise of a 21st century reboot roaring with action and suspense awaits. Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Brie Larson, and John Goodman are but a few of the adventurers journeying across the Pacific Ocean, unaware of the shocking spectacles that await them. Skull Island is uncharted, rich with fantastic sights, and incredibly treacherous, meaning Kong may well be the least of our intrepid explorers’ concerns upon arrival. Bigger isn’t always better in Hollywood, but a promising director, talented cast, and stunning visual effects may well return King Kong to his cinematic throne.

FIRE AT SEA (12A) FILM AND PANEL DISCUSSION Wed 22 Mar, 7.30pm
Gianfranco Rosi’s beautiful, mysterious and moving film is a documentary portrait of Lampedusa, the Sicilian island where desperate migrants from Africa and the Middle East arrive each year hoping for a new life in Europe: 400,000 in the last 20 years. Around its coast thousands are drowned, or dragged dead from their grotesquely unsafe inflatables, burned or poisoned by fumes from the diesel with which their craft have had to be refuelled from jerry cans mid-journey, in choppy seas. Lampedusa has quietly become the tragic epicentre of the migrant experience: part holding tank, part cemetery. The islanders of Lampedusa make a living from fishing. Generations have grown up and grown old with the fear of dying at sea. The endless tide of migrants has made that fear a horrible reality. Artwork by Syrian children living in refugee camps will be on display, and prints of the artwork will be available to buy. For more information visit: www.fromsyriawithlove.com
The screening will be followed by a Q&A panel discussion featuring: Baraa Ehssab Kouja, a Syrian refugee who came to the UK to study at Exeter university. He now curates and speaks at From Syria with Love events. Richard Annandale from Calais Refugee Solidarity Bristol, who has been campaigning to bring unaccompanied refugee children to the UK, specifically Bristol, from Europe. Becky Condron from Refugees Welcome North Somerset, who has just returned from volunteering in a Calais Refugee Kitchen. The panel will be chaired by Paul Dunn. There will also be stalls from Refugees Welcome North Somerset, From Syria with Love, Calais Refugee Solidarity Bristol, North Somerset Labour Party and North Somerset Green Party. With thanks once again to Helen Thornton.
