The Big Picture Michaela Leary, A level Film Studies student, looks back at the evolution of the Western and forward to the Coen Brothers’ remake of ‘True Grit’ Like Paul Newman and Robert Redford in Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid ﬁghting for the lost cause of the outlaw, the western has had to endure an ill-fated battle against changing times... Cowboys and Red Indians were once thought the essential components of a ‘real’ Western; the Indians barbaric and the Cowboys victorious; conventions perfected in John Ford’s Stagecoach (1939), but in the 1960’s the Red Indians became Native Americans and the Western genre was irrevocably changed. Most early Westerns portrayed the days of western expansionism in a positive light. But Arthur Penn’s Little Big Man (1970) turned this viewpoint on its head at time when America was embroiled in the Vietnam war, and the genre was transformed with the social and political changes in America. This was the era of the ‘Revisionist Western’ in which the hero protagonist was replaced with the anti-hero at the centre of the narrative. Other examples include Sam Peckinpah’s The Wild Bunch (1969), Robert Altman’s McCabe & Mrs Miller (1971) as well as the sub-genre Spaghetti Western of which the most famous are perhaps the “Man with No Name” trilogy directed by Sergio Leone and starring Clint Eastwood. Sam Peckinpah’s ‘Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid’ (1973) is widely considered a Western classic now but at the time of its release was received with mixed reviews, though this was in part due to the distributor’s butchered editing which destroyed Peckinpah’s original structure. The Western began to get a bit stale during the 1990’s when it seemed to lack that something different, a spark of originality.

Will the upcoming revival of Henry Hathaway’s 1969 film True Grit, now directed by the Coen Brothers mark a turnaround for the genre? According to Ethan Coen, their film will be a more faithful interpretation of the original novel, by Charles Pontis. So what’s changed to make this version more appealing to the modern audience? According to an article by Josh Taylor at www.cinemablend.com, “‘the script gets to the point more quickly”, leaving out the dragging establishing shots and love scenes that were characteristic of the ‘50s classic western. At the heart of the original novel is the story of an innocent girl, Mattie Ross, and her struggle to track down the murderer of her father. The narrative in the Coen’s film is to be told entirely from Mattie’s perspective – the placing of a woman centre stage marks a major shift in the Western. Jeff Bridges, who also starred in Heaven’s Gate (1980) the box office disaster that broke United Artists, takes on the John Wayne role of the disgruntled bounty hunter Rooster Cogburn. Fourteen year old Mattie Ross is to be played by Hailee Steinfeild, originally played by the then twenty-one year old Kim Darby. Steinfeld is an unknown who won the role from an open casting. The Coen’s appear to be going for the authentic western edge portrayed that they gave us in their modern-Western No Country for Old Men (2007). For me, the remake of True Grit marks the resurrection of the Western genre. Together with Seraphim Falls (2006) The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007) and the remake of 3.10 to Yuma (2007), the Western genre is being reborn.

8 Having won the Grand Jury prize at Sundance, this drama about a Melbourne, Australia-based crime family is already creating a buzz with audiences. Writer/ director David Michod’s first feature film follows troubled teen Joshua ‘J’ Cody (Frecheville) as he finds himself in the clutches of his extended family’s gangster lifestyle after witnessing his mother’s heroin overdose. Ruthlessness runs in the Cody genes as J finds his grandmother (Weaver) to be a steely matriarch to his three thug uncles, one of whom is hiding from the law. This isn’t a typical good-guy bad-guy scenario though, as the city’s armed robbery unit appears to be as corrupt as the criminals they’re after, with little conscience when it comes to doing things by the book. As frightening as J’s new world is, his dilemma doesn’t truly begin until he finds himself caught between his relatives and the detective (Pearce) who appeals to J for help in bringing them all down. A brutal and gritty look at Melbourne’s seedy side through the eyes of an emotionally detached teen, the view is sure to be tense and riveting. Cheyenne Hill

8 In the thick of the British winter, this teen comedy from writer, Tom Williams, is poised to whisk viewers into the seductive and exhilarating world of a luxury ski resort in the Alps. Furthermore, with an obligatory romantic storyline, it’s perfect viewing for Valentine’s season. Described as ‘the Cinderella story of snowboarding’, the movie is based on The Chalet Girl: Falling in Love Can Be A Slippery Slope, the first novel in The Little Black Dress series by Kate Lace. When Chloe (Bush) lands a job at a top ski resort, she discovers her talent for snowboarding, not to mention a taste for her boss’s son. As the big end-of-season competition looms, she must face her fears if she is to become a champion and clinch the much-needed prize money. Having successfully tackled a biopic of the revered Brian Clough, not many people would have guessed that British director Tom Hooper would redirect his efforts towards a movie that would so intimately probe British royalty. “It’s funny because people always ask me, ‘Were you intimidated or worried about portraying the queen’s father?’ and, compared to the pressure of when I made The Damned United about Cloughy, there’s a whole lot less pressure,” explains a relaxed Hooper. His latest outing sees Colin Firth, a long-standing staple of quality British acting, cast as Prince Albert, who was reluctantly thrust into ascendancy as King when his elder brother, Edward VIII (Guy Pearce), scandalously abdicated to marry his mistress. Hooper’s second major film intimately and effectively captures the trepidation and reluctance of Prince Albert to take up the mantle of King George VI, due to his debilitating speech impediment. Although the King attempted on many occasions to overcome his incapacitating stammer and incredible fear of public speaking, all attempts had proved resoundingly unsuccessful. With

increasing desperation, his wife Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter) - the future Queen Mother - turned to a radical Australian speech therapist named Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush), who was known by many for his unusual practices. As the Second World War rumbled on the horizon and the King’s ultimate test drew near, the two embarked on a series of unorthodox techniques and, ultimately, formed an incredibly close bond. “The strange thing is, we had to completely change some of the scenes because nine weeks before the shoot we found this stack of handwritten diaries in the attic of Lionel Logue’s grandson. It was a total treasure trove of information that no historian had ever read, a first hand account of his relationship with the king, so naturally we had to rewrite the script. In fact some of the best lines of dialogue in the film were word for word conversations that King George VI and Logue had together. The only problem was that his handwriting was appalling and of course the only person who could read his handwriting was my mum, who said she could understand every word.” “Maybe it was risky changing the script so late, but I’m just incredibly obsessional about truth, and I care about history. I’m not casual about those sorts of things,

and generally if I can get it right I will. I mean, ultimately, my duty is as an entertainer and a storyteller. I’m not going to make a boring movie just to be accurate, but I’ll always do a lot of research and try and be as accurate as possible and only differ from the truth if I really can’t make it entertaining.” “This isn’t one of those classic royal movies you see - this is something different. Directors usually tend to get infatuated by pageantry and lavishness and gold and sumptuousness, which didn’t interest me at all. Initially the first page of the script started with the King being dressed in royal finery and taken to Wembley where he met his father on a canopied stage. But then I found this bit of archive, this silent flickery footage, of the actual speech at Wembley and he’s dressed in a black overcoat, a grey suit and a black top hat. He looks like every other man there - there’s nothing marking him out as royal, his father’s not there, he just speaks from the stand in Wembley, not from a platform, and I thought, “Thank God.” The reality is much less royal than you’d imagine, but it’s much more interesting and, in the end, you get this wonderful image of this ordinary man scared out of his wits, and that’s the way we are introduced to the prince, which is

wonderfully subversive.” This combination of hard fact and entertainment worked wonders for Hooper’s The Damned United and, in The King’s Speech, it has also proved highly successful, scooping five honours at the British Independent Film Awards and a further seven nods at the Golden Globes. “I could say that I knew all along that it was this good and that we would win everything, but the truth is, none

of us really knew what to expect from any of the awards. The thing is, the film might appear to be this big movie, but the truth is that it was a true low-budget, British independent film. It only happened because of the Film Council, it only happened because Momentum, our distributor, helped, and it was very dependent on the tax break. There were times when it was really touch and go whether it would get off the ground and the

studio system would never have made this film. I mean, we tried to get studios to make it and they wouldn’t do it; they were sort of looking at it, flirting with it, but no one came over the line and said, “Yes we’ll do it”. I suppose that just shows how important and how strong the independent cinema scene is in the UK.” “I’m a bit old- fashioned because, even though it’s already won awards and it’s getting

nominations left right and centre, we have to remember that the film’s yet to make a pound in the UK box office. Above all, I want that to go well, and I want the public to come and support it because I genuinely believe that it’s a great movie that everyone can enjoy. So for now, I just hope it’s successful here in Britain and then maybe we can start to think about awards.” The King’s Speech is released on 7 January

THE DEBT 8 If there is one thing John Madden’s time-spanning thriller teaches us, it’s that Nazis are bad. Nothing new there then, but The Debt still has much darker themes than this old movie cliché running through it. Starting in 1965, it follows three Mossad agents with the mission of hunting down a notorious Nazi war criminal known as the Surgeon of Birkenau. They encounter problems on their mission but manage to complete their task. 30 years later, a man claiming to be their old target surfaces in the Ukraine and the three agents must reunite in a very different world to find out what’s really going on. The Debt is based on the 2007 Israeli original, directed by Asaaf Bernstein, and stars Sam Worthington, Jessica Chastain and Marton Csokas as the young agents, and Ciaran Hinds, Helen Mirren and Tom Wilkinson as their older counterparts. Scripted by Matthew Vaughn, Jane Goldman and Peter Straughan, Madden’s film is set to have all the twists and turns necessary to make it one entertaining thriller, and is already being looked at as a possible contender for the 2011 Oscars. 8 Vince Vaughn and Kevin James head a starry lineup in this comedy about a man who finds out that what you don’t say to a friend is just as important as what you do. This portrayal of a brotherly bond under pressure is director Ron Howard’s first comedy since 2000’s How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Since college, bachelor Ronny (Vaughn) and happily married Nick (James) have supported each other through thick and thin. Now working in partnership at an auto design firm, they are fighting to land a dream project. With the support of Ronny’s girlfriend Beth (Connelly) and Nick’s wife Geneva (Ryder), it would appear that life couldn’t get better - that is, until Ronny sees Geneva with another man. His world is turned upside down as his protective instincts surface and he sets out to find answers. In a race against time, Ronny’s world dissolves into one of comic mayhem as he discovers some unnerving secrets that Nick has been keeping. With the clock ticking, Ronny must decide how and when he will reveal the truth to his best friend - indicating the film’s message that honesty is the best policy. Emma Louise Ingham

Played by the consistently brilliant William Fichtner, this merciless and enigmatic killer is sent to retrieve Milton and take him back to hell. It is his last chance for redemption and, with only three days to avoid capture, Milton must find his kidnapped granddaughter, prevent her impending sacrifice and bring an end to the vicious cult - a tough feat even for big daddy. Will Milton be able to have his final redemption, or will his soul be doomed to live in hell for eternity? 8 Few boxers deserve to have a film made about their lives. However, ‘Irish’ Mickey Ward (Wahlberg) is such a fighter. Best known for his epic trilogy of fights with Arturo Gatti, The Fighter looks set to follow the humble boxer’s unlikely rise from the streets to becoming the light welterweight champion of the world. The Fighter delves into two murky, corrupt worlds: boxing and drugs, focusing on the relationships between Ward and his older, half brother Dicky Eklund (Bale), a one-time contender, and love interest Charlene Fleming (Adams). A working class hero, Ward worshipped his brother with fierce loyalty, despite Eklund’s spiral into crime and crack cocaine addiction. Charlene’s unshakeable devotion, coupled with Eklund’s unique training, will elicit Ward’s heart and talent, ultimately arriving at boxing’s legendary payday when he wins the title at the top of his game. Make no mistake - this impressive display of acting talent, married with Ward’s remarkable life story, will ensure The Fighter is one of the most emotionally charged films of the year. Darren L. 8 In the wake of the Toy Story 3 buzz (no pun intended), Disney shows us that toys aren’t the only ones with minds of their own in Gnomeo and Juliet. Featuring a soundtrack by Elton John and a starry cast of voice talent, this 3D family adventure breathes new life into a Shakespearian classic, opening it to a whole new generation. The infamous feuding families of the play are represented in the form of neighbouring gnomes in an attempt to transform a tragic love story into a lighthearted tale, whilst not straying too far from the original themes. When Gnomeo (McAvoy) and Juliet (Blunt) fall in love, there are a host of obstacles they must overcome, not least of which is finding a way to keep their romance a secret on both sides of the fence. Bearing in mind the target audience of this latest Disney offering, we are left guessing whether there will finally be a happy ending for a couple who have been doomed for centuries. Jodie Perry

Britt Reid (Rogen), an aimless slacker and playboy, is heir to a fortune, courtesy of the largest newspaper in Los Angeles. He teams up with the resourceful Kato (Chou), his father’s former valet-cum-chauffeur, who is a martial arts expert and automotive whizz kid. Armed with The Black Beauty, an indestructible car built by Kato, the dynamic duo set out to become superheroes. Masquerading undercover as villains, they inch closer to their biggest nemesis, underworld criminal Benjamin Chudnofsky (Waltz). In fact, the glowing critical response to the dark and macabre drama Stateside has seen the film scoop four Golden Globe nominations including Best Picture and Best Actress. The story follows Nina (Portman), a dedicated ballerina, whose sense of ambition is fuelled by the fanaticism of her retired ballerina mother, Erica (Hershey). When artistic director Thomas (Cassel) decides to replace prima ballerina Beth (Ryder) in Swan Lake, Nina sees it as her chance to shine. Although she is the perfect fit for the grace and innocence of the White Swan, new dancer Lily (Kunis) appears to be the embodiment of the guile and sensuality of the Black Swan. As their rivalry grows, Nina pirouettes into recklessness and destruction. Black Swan promises to be a chilling and compelling observation of the world behind a physically demanding profession from director Darren Aronofsky, who last wowed audiences with The Wrestler. Number Four, aka John Smith, is one of nine aliens who hide out on Earth when their home planet is destroyed by an invading species. The aliens clearly resemble humans and each is given a guardian as well as a number. As they enter adulthood, they develop super powers and their enemy seeks to wipe them out. The first three have already been killed and John is next. John has been on the run with his guardian for most of his life, but when they move to Ohio and he starts high school and falls in love with beautiful young photographer Sarah (played by Glee’s Dianna Agron), he wants to stop running. John then sets in motion a complicated plot to free his wife and reunite her with their son - but not everything goes according to plan. A remake of the 2007 French film Pour Elle (Anything for Her) by Fred Cavaye, The Next Three Days is a smart action thriller that will have audiences biting their nails in anticipation as the intense drama unfolds. Knocked Up’s Seth Rogen voices the extraterrestrial Paul, an alien who has been residing at a top secret American military base for decades. One day, Paul decides he has to escape this restrictive lifestyle and hitches a ride with the first vehicle that passes by - which just happens to be an RV driven by Graeme (Pegg) and Clive (Frost), two Brits who are road-tripping across the UFO highway of America. This may just be the formula for the leads’ most sublime comedic marathon yet, which culminates via a sci-fi geek’s dream: delivering the titular alien back to the mother ship with government agents relentlessly in tow to thwart them. 8 Set in the unexplored confines of the biggest cave labyrinth on the planet, Sanctum tells the story of a group of cave divers who become trapped in rapidly rising water when a tropical storm hits. Richard Roxburgh (Moulin Rouge and Van Helsing) plays Frank McGuire, the team leader who will risk anything to keep the group alive. Sanctum was shot in 3D, which is said to emphasise the claustrophobic nature of the film, making us experience every moment of tension from the edge of our seats. Despite being just one of many producers working on Sanctum, James Cameron is netting all the headlines. It’s unsurprising really, considering his reputation for capturing the beauty and terror of deep water in films like The Abyss and Titanic, and for his unprecedented success with 3D technology in Avatar. Fledgling director, Alister Grierson, whose short filmography includes Kokoda: 39th Battalion, will have learnt a great deal from working with the experienced filmmaker, but will be hoping to make a splash of his own. 8 Tangled tells a re-imagined version of the classic tale of Rapunzel, the German fairytale originally penned by the Brothers Grimm. Helmed by directors Nathan Greno and Byron Howard, Tangled is the fiftieth animated feature in Disney’s central series. Featuring superb CGI that is rendered for a less realistic and more paintingbased style, Tangled holds the title of second most expensive film and most expensive animation made to date. Perhaps contributing to this cost was the necessity to develop new technologies in order to improve the animated hair of Rapunzel and to help recapture the softer tone of older Disney classics. Tangled follows both Rapunzel (Moore) and a thief called Flynn Rider (Levi). When Flynn encounters Rapunzel’s tower while fleeing from authorities she captures him and makes a deal. She will return the tiara he stole if he helps her flee from the tower. Flynn agrees and together they set out on their journey. Tangled is set to be an exciting and heart-warming adventure to look forward to in the depths of winter. Kit Goodliffe

8 When the Coen Brothers remade The Lady Killers, they took on the modernisation of a classic, leaving Tom Hanks the unenviable task of filling the shoes of Alec Guinness. The reviews were not positive. Undeterred, the Coens are giving the remake a second shot and, while they haven’t made it any easier for their star this time round, the end result is looking extremely appealing. Jeff Bridges takes on a role made famous by John Wayne: tough, drunken lawman, Rooster Cogburn. Ignoring the inebriation, young Mattie Ross (Steinfeld) has come to Rooster with faith that he will catch the man who murdered her father. Alongside a Texas Ranger (Damon), the duo set out on the trail of Tom Chaney (played by a mean looking Josh Brolin) with vengeance on their mind. Joel and Ethan Coen’s last star-studded adventure into the Wild West bagged them an Oscar, and given the release date and stellar cast, it appears they have the same hopes again. There’s no doubt that everyone involved will pull out all the stops to make True Grit tense, captivating viewing and quite potentially - a classic cowboy film. Chris Upton

THE WARD 8 Given the magnitude of John Carpenter’s previous works, the likes of which include Halloween, The Thing and Assault on Precinct 13, all of which have now been remade or tinkered with by Hollywood, it’s surprising that the man himself has all but disappeared from directorial duties on the silver screen for well over a decade. After a slew of cinematic disappointments in the ‘90s, Carpenter’s focus shifted towards television, whilst rumours began to surface that that he had withdrawn from Hollywood altogether. Several film projects were rumoured for years until The Ward was announced in 2009, marking his first film since 2001’s Ghost of Mars. Carpenter puts a unique spin on a ghost story, telling the tale of a young girl interred at a mysterious mental institution whose ghostly visions begin to threaten her safety and those around her. Having spent the past decade re-honing his craft on the small screen, Carpenter’s film promises to be a return to form for the horror maestro. And in a time when stale horror remakes are virtually all that Hollywood has to offer, his return couldn’t be more welcome. Paul Weedon

8 Everyone’s favourite cartoon bear hits cinemas in an all new adventure that is sure to enthrall children and adults alike. A documentary filmmaker (Faris) crosses paths with Yogi Bear (Aykroyd) when Jellystone Park is celebrating its 100th year. The park has recently been losing business and greedy Mayor Brown (Daly) sees this as an opportunity to shut it down and sell off the land. Facing potential homelessness, Yogi faces his biggest challenge yet and, in an attempt to prove that he really is ‘smarter than the average bear’, joins forces with Boo-boo (Timberlake) and Ranger Smith (Cavanagh) to try and find a way to stop the park from closing. This is not the mischievous bear’s first outing onto the big screen; after featuring on The Huckleberry Hound Show and then headlining his own show, Hey There It’s Yogi Bear saw him as the first Hanna Barbera character to star in his own film. Yogi Bear combines live action and animation and, backed up with the vocal talents of one of comedy’s greatest, Warner Bros. may well have another success on their hands. Jen Evans

Follow the simple onscreen instructions and once booked you will receive a confirmation email stating the selected Cinema, Film, Performance Time and Booking ID Number. The Booking ID Number should be quoted at the box office on arrival to collect your tickets (please note the email does not act as a ticket and will not allow entrance to the auditorium).
