8 Spring has sprung and, with the daffodils, blossoming trees and lighter evenings comes some spectacular cinematic entertainment. first up, the avengers is set to pack one helluva punch. anticipation has reached fever pitch for this comic book mashup, which sees some of the greatest superheroes ever to set light to the silver screen line up for one awesome showdown. With iron man, hulk, thor and Captain america joining forces, Joss Whedon’s epic flick spells one unmissable frenzy of mindblowing, heart-pounding, one-
viewing-is-not-enough action. the action feast continues in Wrath of the titans, the follow-up to 2010’s Clash of the titans, which sees Sam Worthington return to the role of Perseus for more classical conflict, while We Bought a zoo, inspired by the true story behind Dartmoor zoo, is sure to be a heart-warming and emotive drama with a local resonance. however, my pick of the season has to be the Pirates! in an adventure With Scientists. aardman plus swashbuckling adventure on the high seas equals cinema gold in my book. GRAHAM COXON monday 30 april
8 Graham Coxon’s new album A+E finds the Blur guitarist continuing with his singular vision as a truly eclectic artist. Playing all the instruments and improvising in the studio, Coxon found himself preoccupied with lyrical themes around the effects of weekend hedonism in modern Britain, on which A+E shines an outsider’s light, albeit with a mordant, sharp wit. This may be the closet Coxon has ever come to making, in a skewed sense of the word, ‘dance’ music. He describes the album as, “Improvisations, experiments in beats, rhythms. A chance to uninhibitedly make some sort of perversely sad, danceable and funny and despondent songs.” In keeping with the album’s themes, Coxon is curating the bill on this special tour around the UK, inviting his fans to nominate local bands to support him - he will then select his favourite for each venue. Don’t miss this opportunity to see Coxon perform alongside some local rising stars. 2 march – real diamond, 7 march – paul daniels, 10 march – rizzle kicks, 11 march – maverick sabre, 15 march – wild Beasts, 16 march – mad dog mcrea, 17 march – Gimme! TIN monday 23 – tuesday 24 april tickets £10 to £20 (concessions availaBle)
8 Set in West Cornwall 1890, TIN is a comic melodrama about love and money, opera and mining. The shareholders are throwing good money after bad down their once glorious tin mine. Just when they manage to hoodwink an outsider into investing in the failing enterprise, a troupe of windswept actors arrives in town to perform Beethoven’s Fidelio. As these two very different worlds collide, love stories unfold and melodrama spills over into everyday life as the villagers and actors seize an opportunity to transform their lives. This exciting collaboration between Cornwall’s Miracle Theatre Events, promotions and English Touring Opera features Ben Luxon and news from and local community choirs in a heady mix of epic across Cornwall theatre, multimedia magic and top-notch singing!

21 JUMP STREET
Chris Miller starring Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, Ice Cube
8 Jonah Hill (Superbad, Knocked Up) stars in 21 Jump Street, the long-awaited adaptation of the classic TV series adored by American teens in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. The show focused on a group of young and unbelievably good-looking police officers who solved crimes while working undercover at the local high schools. While Peter DeLuise’s Officer Penhall always provided a few laughs, the show was more drama than comedy, highlighting the importance of law and order to its young audience. Hill and company have turned this on its head by treading the slapstick route - familiar territory for all involved. Hill and Tatum (The Vow) play police officers who are required to go undercover at a high school to bust a drugs ring, thereby reacquainting themselves with the anxiety and terror of being a teenager again. That’s as complicated as it gets but, with the directorial duo behind Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs, this is sure to be daft humour at its very best. It is unlikely, however, that 21 Jump Street will do for Hill’s career what it did for Johnny Depp’s. Jen Evans

ACT OF VALOR
director Mike McCoy, Scott Waugh starring Alex Veadov, Roselyn Sanchez, Nestor Serrano release date 23 March COnTEnT icons
8 From directors Mike McCoy and Scott Waugh comes Act of Valour. Based on actual military events, this revealing action-thriller fuses fresh filmmaking and reallife heroism with the theme of global anti-terrorism. When a covert mission to rescue a kidnapped CIA agent leads to the discovery of a terrorist plot against the US, an elite team of Navy SEALs are charged with the task of stopping a coordinated attack and the slaughter of thousands of innocent civilians. In a mission that takes a series of deadly twists and spans the globe, from the Philippines to the US-Mexico border, the team engage in captivating combat sequences and experience heartshattering emotion as they balance their commitment to their country, each other and their families. Prepare to be teetering on the edge of your seat as an epic - and potentially world changing - showdown looms. Screenwriter Kurt Johnstad (300) draws viewers in with this authentic and realistic take on a secretive world, while the characters are portrayed by active-duty US Navy Seals using the latest battlefield technology. A story of courage, loss, honour and loyalty, Act of Valour promises to be an awe-inspiring filmic experience. Amy Evans

I
t’s ok hollywood: you can stop now. Go on, put the camera down. Yes, that’s it. Just go sit in that comfy looking director’s chair and get some sleep. Oh, don’t look like that - we know it’s sad now, but one day you’ll see that this is a happy moment! You really should be proud of yourself; think of everything you’ve been through: a hundred years of experimentation, trillions of dollars and you finally did it... you’ve made the perfect movie. iron Man, Thor, captain america and the hulk - all in one reel of celluloid. complete with a-list ensemble and helmed by the only mainstream director to be respected by (notoriously critical) comic book fans. No one believed it could ever happen, but a live action avengers has been made.
FEATURE
The pinnacle of cinema has dawned in our lifetime. Consider the sCale of this produCtion... 1) Take the world’s most popular superheroes. invest $1 billion dollars to make four separate movies, each designed to kickstart an individual franchise while remaining critically and commercially popular. 2) carefully plan the development of a ‘Marvel cinematic Universe’, intertwining the four stories using hidden scenes and cross-movie cameos. 3) cultivate internet hype five years before the intended release date. 4) coordinate (and pay for) simultaneous availability of the most impressive ensemble cast this side of Ocean’s Eleven. 5) release the film, without giving away every minor plot detail or having a production runner steal your movie and upload a torrent. Unless you are some sort of Dc comics fanatic, the chances are that The avengers movie will play host to pretty much all of your favourite superheroes. The enigmatic Nick Fury (Samuel l. Jackson), head of secretive government agency, S.h.i.E.l.D., has spent years recruiting the world’s greatest warriors, in preparation for the day we need a last line of defence. That day comes by way of sorcerer, loki (Tom hiddleston). Betraying his brother, loki nearly succeeded in usurping the asgard throne and slaying Thor. Defeated, barely, loki was thought dead. Except... those who stayed until the end of the credits would see that he somehow transported his essence across the universe - to Earth. Now, having reformed his body and exponentially increased his powers, loki has summoned an alien army and launches an invasion. as the Earth looks set to be overwhelmed, S.h.i.E.l.D. calls
The avengers. Tony Stark, aka iron Man, leads the pack with two movies (Downey Jr., 2008 and 2010); selfstyled ‘playboy, philanthropist, genius billionaire’, Stark’s armour is the most advanced technology on the planet. Steve rogers, aka captain america (chris Evans, 2011), transformed by the US military from weakling to human perfection, fights only for the greater good. rogers has superhuman strength and a shield of impenetrable adamantium. Thor, aka Norse God of Thunder (chris hemsworth, 2011), the most conflicted of the group, feels responsible for loki’s actions, but can he bring himself to kill his brother? Thor has preternatural strength and a Thunder hammer that can control lightning. Bruce Banner, aka hulk (Mark ruffalo, replacing Ed Norton who starred in the 2008 film), is a mildmannered scientist who transforms into a 15ft monster when enraged. although hardly the most subtle creature, hulk is physically the strongest of all the avengers. aside from the aforementioned ‘big four’, several high-ranking S.h.i.E.l.D. agents will join the group, including close combat specialist Black Widow (Scarlett Johansen) and master bowman hawkeye (Jeremy renner). Of course, with all these heavyweight characters vying for screen time, there is the risk that The avengers might suffer from Spiderman 3 syndrome (messy storyline, angsty heroes, rubbish villains). Joss Whedon’s involvement should waylay those fears. having made his name creating, writing and directing some of the best
ensemble casts in television history (Buffy, angel, Firefly), The avengers premise plays to this helmsman’s strengths. Teaser trailers indicate the quick-fire dialogue for which Whedon is famous, with egos clashing while the group dynamic is formed. poor Banner gets teased about his anger management, while roguish self-server Stark and allamerican hero rogers exchange barbs from the outset. Witty dialogue, super strength and alien invasion - this is everything a superhero movie should be. No Fantastic Four silliness, nor po-faced Batman brooding. Throw in six superheroes for the price of one admission, and you have filmic perfection. The demise of hollywood cinema is a small price to pay. Except...are we being too hasty? With The avengers, Marvel undertook the impossible and succeeded. is it so unlikely lightning might strike twice, and somehow improve with the inevitable sequel? Whedon may even see fit to make these lycraclad heroes fight each other. Think of the possibilities: iron Man vs. Thor, captain america vs. hawkeye, hulk vs.... well, everybody. You there! Stop slacking and pick up that camera. We have a movie to shoot! The Avengers is released on 27th April

8 after the rip-roaring success of Transformers on the big screen, it’s no surprise that hasbro quickly turned its attentions to converting another one of its famous brands into a big budget hollywood blockbuster. Still, you might be wondering how a humble tabletop game could have possibly been turned into an all-singing, all-dancing slice of cinema. Well, let us explain. The film takes place in hawaii when an alien armada, threatening to destroy Earth, suddenly attacks a fully armed international naval fleet. Thankfully though, there’s an all-star cast including Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night lights), liam Neeson (Taken) and rihanna - yes, you read that correctly - ready to blow the technologically superior aliens clean out of the skies! So far, everything has pointed towards Battleships being unashamedly similar - in look, sound and special effects - to Michael Bay’s epic Transformers trilogy. But, no matter how you felt about the ‘robots in disguise’, at least you’ll be guaranteed a spectacular action-packed romp. plus, you’ll probably get to hear liam Neeson shouting, “You sunk my battleship!” in glorious surroundsound. Now who doesn’t want to see that? James Wright

8 a tale of ambition, power and seduction adapted from the story by Guy de Maupassant, Bel ami chronicles a young man’s rise to power in paris via his manipulation of the city’s most influential and wealthy women. Set in the 1890s, Georges Duroy (pattinson), known to his friends as Bel ami, is young, attractive and very ambitious. When he is offered a job as a journalist on la Vie Francaise, he comes face to face with the realities of the corrupt society in which he lives - the sleazy colleagues, the manipulative mistresses and wily financiers - and swiftly learns to become an arch-seducer, blackmailer and social climber. From cockroach-ridden garrets to opulent salons, he enjoys passionate trysts with a string of wealthy beauties (Thurman, ricci, Scott Thomas) in a world where politics and media jostle for influence, where sex is power, celebrity an obsession - and where love is only a means to an end. WHAT’S ON
The CABIN IN The WOODS (3D) 8 This blood-chilling horror follows the narrative of five friends who go for a break in a remote cabin in the heart of the woods. as the group of friends settle in for the weekend, they soon realise the cabin has more to offer than the fun vacation they were looking for. With plot details remaining scarce until its release, the film promises to turn the horror genre inside out by providing a new twist on a classic scenario, which sees a group of young people stranded in the middle of nowhere. With american film and television screenwriter Drew Goddard (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, cloverfield) at the helm and Joss Whedon (The avengers, Thor) taking producing and co-screenwriting credits, hopes are understandably high for a horror that delivers. Starring Thor’s chris hemsworth alongside richard Jenkins, Bradley Whitford and Kristen connolly, viewers are advised to expect the unexpected and, if the buzz is to be believed, The cabin in the Woods might just be the horror film to end all horrors. 8 imagine taking an idyllic vacation off the Spanish coast; one moment your family are relaxing on a private yacht, the next you return to find an empty bloodstained cabin. This is the horrifying scenario that faces Wall Street trader Will Shaw (cavill). after alerting the local authorities, Will realises that his family’s disappearance isn’t any ordinary kidnapping, but just one piece in a puzzle of betrayal and deceit, which he must solve to save those he loves most. Fortunately for the young protagonist, Will’s seemingly unassuming father (Willis) is actually cut from the finest action hero cloth, possessing all the deadly skills of your typical undercover cia operative. Unfortunately for Will, after learning of his father’s true identity, he has no idea whether he can trust the man who raised him. With a cast including the future Superman, Sigourney Weaver and Bruce Willis, The cold light of Day threatens to be an action thriller wrought with heart-stopping moments and enough hitchcockian twists and turns to keep you in the dark right until the very end. 8 Whether polluting the air with profanities in The Departed or lacing up his gloves for The Fighter, the fact remains that Mark Wahlberg still possesses a raw Bostonian intensity which he can tap into whenever the role requires it. after surviving life as a contraband runner, chris Farraday (Wahlberg) has gone legit, but just when he thought he was out, he’s about to get pulled back in. When brother-in-law andy dumps a ‘package’ during a score gone wrong, chris must settle his debt and transport millions in counterfeit cash to panama via cargo ship. Gone in Sixty Seconds’ Giovanni ribisi engages in some cinematic role reversal: no longer the hapless younger brother up to no good but now in the role of riggs, a bona fide badass of the drug lord variety. after discovering that his cash has found its way to the bottom of the ocean, riggs targets chris’s wife (Beckinsale) and child, setting in motion a highly personal war between the two men. Under the gritty backdrop of New Orleans, chris must fight to protect the life that he fought so hard to earn. Brody Rossiter

8 ‘May the odds be ever in your favour,’ an already classic line from Suzanne collins’ dystopian young adult trilogy, certainly applies to this adaptation. Odds are, given the success of page-to-screen behemoths Twilight and harry potter and the velocity with which collins’ tomes have flown off bookshelves and on to e-readers, this Gary ross-directed instalment has favour on its side. annually in panem - a collection of 12 districts ruled by the capitol - one boy and girl are chosen to represent each district in a ruthless survival tournament, pitting children against one another in a media-obsessed bloodbath. Televised and touted as ‘entertainment’, the capitol runs the Games as a reminder to citizens of their historic failed uprising. Only one survives, so when 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen (lawrence) hears her young sister is chosen, Katniss volunteers herself instead. lawrence has her work cut out with Katniss’s obstinacy and serious bow skills, not to mention her complex feelings for love triangle participants peeta (hutcherson) and Gale (hemsworth). Forget secrets of the resident school vampire; this will be a violent race to the finish with stakes higher than your typical Ya story. Cheyenne Hill

8 Set in the sweltering summer of 1976, hunky Dory traces the trials and tribulations of drama teacher Vivienne (Driver) as she attempts to put on an end-of-year musical version of Shakespeare’s The Tempest in a Swansea comprehensive school. in an attempt to engage the disinterested bunch of pupils, she uses hits of the time from artists such as David Bowie, lou reed, Electric light Orchestra and The Beach Boys to lend a musical dimension to the classic play. But she faces an uphill struggle against cynical colleagues and parents, not to mention teenage apathy, angst and hormones. Suffice to say, putting on this show is not going to be easy. a fresh young cast including aneurin Barnard, Kimberley Nixon, robert pugh and adam Bryard joins Good Will hunting actress Minnie Driver. Written by laurence coriat, directed by Marc Evans and co-produced by Jon Finn of Billy Elliot fame, hunky Dory promises to be a humorous, heartfelt and nostalgic coming-of-age tale that will delight fans of British dramas such as cemetery Junction and Billy Elliot. 8 From Jay and Mark Duplass (cyrus) comes a comedy with an important message - ‘You can’t choose your family, but you can choose your destiny’. it may sound clichéd, but in the context of the film, it’s powerful stuff. Jason Segel (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) plays the titular Jeff, a man who spends all day every day in his basement room at his Mum’s (Sarandon) house. he has no understanding of adult relationships or responsibilities and isn’t too familiar with having a job. however, when he finally leaves the house one day on an errand for some wood glue, he has a chance meeting with his brother pat (helms of The hangover), who’s following his potentially adulterous wife. Through a catalogue of unforeseen and comedic events - not to mention a bit of brotherly bonding - Jeff discovers what he needs to do with his life rather than sitting around and waiting for something to happen. Segel and helms are undeniably fantastic comic actors in their own right, and seeing them together will, if not for the sharp directing skills of the Duplass brothers, make this soul-searching comedy worth a watch. JOHN CARTER (3D) 8 Distributed by Disney and expected to be a huge family hit, John carter will take its audience on a marvellous action-packed science-fiction adventure. John carter (Kitsch) is living a normal life in 1800s america. he’s a retired confederate captain seeking to forget about the civil war. however, his world is turned upside down (or sent a million miles away) when he mysteriously wakes up on the planet Mars. With no idea how he got there and no way back, John soon discovers that the planet is heavily inhabited. Mars, known as Barsoom to the natives, is suffering greatly. The planet is dying due to a loss of water and atmosphere and, to make things worse, the different nations are embroiled in a constant war. While in search of a way home, John gets dragged into the conflicts and decides to take it upon himself to save the planet. Based on the pulp fiction sci-fi novel, a princess of Mars by Edgar rice Burroughs published in 1917, John carter looks set to mark the start of an exciting fantasy series. Ryan Cope

8 Guy pearce plays Snow, a ‘loose cannon’ and former government agent who was convicted of a crime which he did not commit. When it comes to breaking the rules, he’s the best in the business. That’s why he’s being given the chance to regain his freedom, provided he can save the president’s daughter (Maggie Grace of lost) from an overrun prison colony in space. admittedly, lockout couldn’t be anymore cliché if you tried - it’s practically a sci-fi slant on John carpenter’s Escape from New York - but nevertheless, everything about lockout looks impressively slick, funny and action-packed. Better still, when you factor in the fact that luc Besson (The Fifth Element and Taken) is producing the film, you’re all but assured that lockout will not only look the business, but also contain several badass action sequences on top. With all the credentials of a cult classic in the making, make sure that you don’t let this film fly under your radar - because if ever there was a dark horse for the title of ‘action film of the year’, then this would certainly be it! 8 We all enjoy a good fairytale and few fairytales are as well known as Snow White. From Disney’s famous animated film to the darker Snow White: a Tale of Terror, there have been many interpretations of this classic story. The tradition of re-imagining is to continue this spring as director Tarsem Singh, known for the psychological horror The cell and the more recent immortals, steps up to the task with Mirror Mirror. Starring Julia roberts as the Queen and lily collins as Snow White, Mirror Mirror is set to tell a slightly different tale to the one you may be familiar with. The Queen, jealous of Snow White’s beauty, steals control of her kingdom and banishes the young girl to the forest. here, the heroine teams up with a band of seven rebels and sets out to overthrow the Queen. This novel take on the tale comes with a strong supporting cast that includes Sean Bean as the King and armie hammer of The Social Network fame as prince alcott. if you’re seeking a fun-filled flight of fancy, then this refreshing take on a classic might be just the ticket. 8 From aardman, the makers of Wallace and Gromit and chicken run, comes another gag-a-minute round of plasticine mayhem. if the title doesn’t make it obvious enough, this is set aboard a pirate ship, manned by the nameless ‘pirate captain’ who is voiced by the usually upper class hugh Grant in his first animated role. Despite a dubious track record, pirate captain is armed with boundless enthusiasm as he sets out on a mission to beat his rivals, Black Bellamy (Entourage’s Jeremy piven) and cutlass liz (puss in Boots’ Salma hayek), to become the ‘pirate Of The Year’ and reap all the benefits that come with it. The voyage that’s required of him takes him and his crew from the streets of Victorian london to the fictional but aptly named Blood island, battling Queen Victoria (Staunton) and joining forces with young scientist charles Darwin (Tennant) along the way. With the studio’s trademark humour and top-notch voice talent aboard, get set for uproarious fun and laughout-loud high jinks as aardman’s brilliantly imagined 3D adventure takes to the high seas. SALMON FISHING IN YEMEN
Director lasse hallström Starring Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt, amr Waked
8 lasse hallström, director of such films as What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?, chocolat and The cider house rules, returns to helm another offbeat dramedy, this time based on novelist paul Torday’s debut, taking place in both london and the highlands of Yemen. Thomas plays the prime Minister’s press secretary, Bridget Maxwell, who’s fired up with the notion that a ‘good news story about the Middle East’ will ease political tensions. a benevolent, fly fishing-obsessed sheik (Waked) dreams of introducing the sport of salmon fishing into Yemen’s waterways, a dream that Britain’s leading fisheries expert, Dr. alfred Jones (McGregor), laughs off as impossible. Bridget latches fervently onto the project as the perfect heartfelt goodwill tale the media and the country so desperately needs. The hapless, introverted Jones is put on the case, alongside consultant harriet chetwode-Talbot (Blunt), saddled with the chore of making the sheik’s vision come to life. The source novel has been dubbed satirical, charming and witty, and with Simon Beaufoy, Slumdog Millionaire’s Oscar-winning screenwriter, at the wheel, the messages of believing in the unbelievable and following your heart are sure to shine through. STREETDANCE 2 (3D)
Director Max Giwa, Dania pasquini
8 3D has become a common practice but, love it or hate it, there’s no denying the depth it can add to a film. The sequel to 2010’s StreetDance is the latest film to receive the 3D treatment which will hopefully live up to expectations and fare better at the box office than its predecessor. 2008’s Britain’s Got Talent winner George Sampson resumes his role as dancer Eddie, who helps new friend ash (hentschel) in his quest to find the best street dancers from around the continent. however, romance soon blossoms in the city of love between ash and Eva (Boutella), a talented salsa dancer. While renowned British dance troupe Flawless also continue their role as The Surge, their one-time competitors Diversity are noticeably absent in this film. however, with a heady mix of latin and street dancing set against the backdrop of some of the most famous locations, StreetDance 2 promises to be bigger and better than Giwa and pasquini’s previous offering and may just set the standard for future dance films. WRATH OF THE TiTAnS 2 (3D)
8 Cameron Crowe films are never light on sentimentality, often littered with pop culture references and über credible soundtracks which suffer only to prove that the former music journalist has excellent taste when it comes all things of artistic origin. Whether it is the Tom Petty cuts reverberating throughout the soundtrack or the sun-blushed colour palette with which Crowe decorates his narrative, We Bought a Zoo shows no signs of Cameron losing his gooey centre. He’s like a soft caramel wrapped in a leather jacket boasting a pretty sweet set of vinyl. Starring Matt Damon alongside Scarlett Johansson, We Bought a Zoo follows single father Benjamin relocating his young family to a dilapidated animal sanctuary hoping to fix up broken down family bonds as well as the animal enclosures. Romance, tear-jerking pep talks and bittersweet comedy exchanges promise to follow. As Crowe has so often proved with Say Anything, Jerry Maguire and Vanilla Sky, there is a fine line between that aforementioned sentimentality and downright cheesiness, but when the balance is achieved there lies a distinct excellence in its execution - We Bought a Zoo looks to be no exception. Brody Rossiter
Director Jonathan Liebesman Starring Sam Worthington,
8 Sam Worthington is back as the fate-defying, Titankilling demigod Perseus, but this time you can count on even more epic and action-packed mythical Greek battles. After defeating mighty Kraken, Perseus swapped his sword for a fishing net and decided to live a quiet life with his son Helius. Ten years have passed since his heroic actions and once again the gods ask for his help. The Greek people no longer believe in the Olympians, thus weakening their powers and, with them, the strength of the prison that holds the Titans captive. Hades (Fiennes) has once again unleashed a plot to over throw his brother Zeus (Neeson) and bring destruction to the world of man. Only one person with the blood of a man and a god has any chance of stopping him: Perseus. Joined by the warrior Queen Andromeda (Pike) and fallen god Hephaestus (Nighy), Perseus must travel to Tartarus, prison of the Titans, and save his father before the almighty Kronos, leader of the Titans, can be released.
