8 for me, the best thing about winter is the sheer brilliance of films the coming months have to offer: the magical flights of fancy that capture the magic of the festive season, the feast of captivating dramas bidding for Oscars glory and the lighthearted capers promising fun, laughs and pure escapism. the hollywood take on Stieg larsson’s hugely successful novel the girl with the Dragon tattoo has the potential to become one of the most gripping crime thrillers ever, uniting director David fincher with the likes of Daniel Craig, Christopher

Plummer and Rooney mara the perfect way to liven up the post-Christmas downtime. the entertainment fixes come thick and fast with Sherlock holmes: a game of Shadows, mission: impossible - ghost Protocol and my Week With marilyn, which is being tipped for Oscars glory. But one of my top picks of the season has to be happy feet two. What better way could there possibly be to capture the mood of Christmas and warm the cockles during the chilly winter months than a group of dancing penguins? Rebecca

The Big Picture Peter Delaunay has been catching up with former students working in the film industry If you happened to be enjoying the blazing sunshine near Grebe Beach on the Helford River during that beautiful first weekend of October you might have seen a film crew hard at work. The film, “The Starfish”, was written and directed by former Truro College student Alex Kendall. Three years ago I wrote about Alex’s graduate films just after he graduated with a first class honours degree in Film from Roehampton University. After graduation Alex began working as a bookings and facilities manager at a post-production house in London while developing his own projects and occasional stints as a 1st assistant director; more recently he has been shooting videos for a charity and developing “The Starfish” script. The script is a moving family drama in which a divorced father and his two children spend a day on the beach, but are both children convinced of his love? The finished film will also be the basis for Alex’s application to join the specialist directing course at the National Film and Television School which has fostered the careers of, among many others, David Yates (Harry Potter and the HalfBlood Prince), Beeban Kidron (Bridget Jones: Edge of Reason) and Lynne Ramsay (We Need To Talk About Kevin). The cast of three included young local actors Demelza Williams and Adam Sanders who were joined by Henry Davies. Henry is more usually to be found behind the camera as a director (Tink’s Kitchen, Fencer) but has already showed himself to be a very accomplished actor in his first

feature. The crew working with Alex included Director of Photography, Maja Zamojda, herself an NFTS graduate, and Production Designer Iain Andrews who as well as production designing the feature film Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels has recently completed the same role on the first feature film “Weekend Retreat”, written and directed by former Truro College student Brett Harvey. Costumes for “The Starfish” were by the incredibly talented local designer Trinity Mitchell whose unique take on fashion, fun and frolics you can follow on her Breakfast at Trinity’s blog. The film has been shot on 16mm Fuji stock so should look beautiful; and the professional standard camera was generously provided by the NFTS. Now it’s just a editing, dubbing and the rest of post-production before “The Starfish” should be ready for public exhibition. And finally, following on from my article in the last edition of Big Screen, former Truro College Media students Hannah Bone and Josh Bamford and their co-filmmaker Sebastian Feehan, whose documentary “88” won Best Student Film at this year’s Bradford International Film Festival, were in London in September to collect another award; this time for the Best Documentary Over 5 Minutes at the The Smalls 2011 Short Film Festival. There’ll be a chance to see “88” as well as Brett Harvey’s “Weekend Retreat” at this year’s Cornwall Film Festival in Newquay so look out for dates and times in the Festival programme.

50/50 8 Who knew cancer could be funny? In 50/50, Jonathan Levine directs Hollywood’s new favourite leading man Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Jo-Go to me and you!) in screenwriter Will Reiser’s autobiographical tale. Jo-Go plays Adam, a 27-year-old who discovers he has a rare type of spinal cancer and a 50/50 chance of survival. With the help of his best friend (lovable rogue Seth Rogen), mother (Houston) and therapist (Kendrick), he realises what’s important in life and struggles against the odds to beat the disease that threatens to kill him. Given that Reiser wrote the script, a happy ending is pretty much guaranteed. But it’s not about the destination: it’s about the journey, and the characters. The trailer alone will have you laughing at the touching and funny bromance between the leading men. Rogen and Reiser previously worked together on Da Ali G Show when Reiser became sick, and Rogen comments: “We wanted to make a film that would be as funny, sad and hopefully as honest as the experience we went through.” Sounds like a pretty good ad for the film to me. 8 Dave (Lee) needs a break from the stressful home life of fostering three chipmunks. Completing the trilogy, this third film sees the foursome take a welldeserved, relaxing cruise ship holiday. But relaxing doesn’t come into the vocabulary of the three rodent rascals and it isn’t long before Dave is cursing the ringleader of the chipmunk trio. All is musical fun and games for Alvin until the moment the chipmunks find themselves flying over board, leaving the ship and Dave behind. They wake to find themselves deserted in a tropical paradise and facing a struggle for survival. As the trio have to fend for their furry selves, they learn a series of life lessons, outlining the importance of friendship, responsibility and respect. This family comedy parodies many film classics and a sing-a-long soundtrack, including artists Lady Gaga, Destiny’s Child and Will Smith, makes Chipwrecked 3D uplifting and comical entertainment for all ages this Christmas. he’s an inconsistent mistress, Hollywood. On some beautiful occasions, those svelte white letters deliver pictures that are intelligent, thought provoking and enlightened. In equal share, they are juvenile, insincere and ever seeking to liberate you of your cash before any lies are discovered. Nothing highlights this schizophrenic nature more than when attempting to remake a foreign language into American speak. Enter, Stieg Larsson’s Millenium trilogy. The first, The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo, was published less than twelve months after his death in 2005, and quickly saw

release as a film in 2009. Mikael Blomkvist, a disgraced political magazine editor, is offered freelance work by Henrik Vanger, former CEO of Vanger Enterprises, to investigate the disappearance of his niece Harriet 40 years ago. Blomkvist is grudgingly aided by Lisbeth Salander, a beautiful but troubled computer hacker, who also finds herself abused by the man appointed to be her guardian. As their lives are put in greater danger, the pair must learn to trust each other and overcome five generations of deception to find the truth. With such a complex story arc, one would be forgiven for feeling pessimistic about Hollywood’s chances. As recently as last year, we were treated to a Depp/

Jolie version of The Tourist (remake of French action thriller, Anthony Zimmer) - a film so bad that its sole poster quote read ‘good, escapist fun’ - marketing translation for ‘on the entire planet, not a single reviewer gave this five stars’. Although often less high profile, the offences reach far and wide. In many cases these filmic sorbets are so workmanlike that they fail to prompt anything so emotional as genuine scorn. Even rehashed products with a worldwide niche following, be it horror (The Ring, The Grudge) to anime (The Last Airbender) to the vaguely existential (Vanilla Sky), fail to engender much more than mocking indifference. So it is surprising that, more frequently than the naysayers

would have you believe, they actually get it right: most recently, Let Me In (the remake of Swedish film Let the Right One In) was widely heralded for just ‘closely rivalling’ its source material. Yet, the best ones are those that were so good you probably had no idea that they were a remake. Some have won Academy Awards (Scorsese’s The Departed, based on Hong Kong picture, Infernal Affairs), revived the failing careers of once comic greats (Insomnia, from a Norwegian film of the same name) and successfully reimagined classic French cinema (Twelve Monkeys, adapted from 20 minute short, La Jete). The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo will fall into the latter group. Faith should be placed not only in

Larsson’s source material, but so too the man given authority to wield it. Fifteen years and not a single misstep, david Fincher specialises in smart, well-written and complicated productions, from the grimy aesthetic of Fight club or Zodiac to the slick visuals and rapid fire dialogue of The Social network. Such helming calibre brings

with it A-list casting. Tattoo’s players include the dulcet tones of christopher Plummer, support actor royalty Stellan Skarsgård and robin Wright, who continues to move out from under her former husband’s shadow. As to the female lead, there was much speculation as to who would portray Lisbeth Salander, with emma Watson and ellen Page

having both been rumoured as contenders for the role. While many were surprised by the relatively unknown rooney mara, one could argue that Fincher’s choice is a smart one: Lisbeth’s alternative style and harrowing mid-film ordeal may have become points of media infatuation had the actress been a household name. Here, rooney has the chance to make the role her own, free of comparisons to former roles, Hermione or Juno. Final props go to daniel craig as mikael blomkvist. Admittedly his recent paydays have come from sculpting James bond’s rock-hard fighting abs, but his brooding, tormented 007 is still lauded as a far deeper character than was ever developed by his predecessors, while his oft forgotten ‘character roles’, in pictures like enduring Love, munich and road to Perdition,

show he is more than capable of delivering a powerful performance. As compelling as the Swedish pictures were, they did undeniably have a very ‘Tv movie’ feel (interestingly, the second and third movies were intended only for television, but plans changed following the success of Tattoo). Anyone who has seen the 2011 trailers will attest that this is a far more ambitious production, spanning two continents and more than a dozen locations, from bustling cities to bleak snowbound rural settings. The Girl with the dragon Tattoo is set to be an imposing creature, darker than the original and helmed by a directorial mind confident enough to take risks with Larsson’s literary vision. dare we say it - this is a Hollywood remake that you can expect to improve upon the original. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is released on 26 December

8 There comes a time when every child must learn the truth about Santa. When common sense replaces youthful fantasy and leaves the realisation that good ol’ Saint Nick isn’t quite what he seems. The facts were always going to come out: one man tasked with delivering a planet’s worth of presents - it’s just not realistic. That’s why Santa has adapted, evolved and embraced the digital age, making himself a lean, mean and ultra technological delivering machine minus the lean part. He’s traded in the sleigh for a spaceship, assembled an airborne elf army and got the whole Claus clan in on the action - but even Santa can have a bad day at the office. After one little girl is left off his list, Santa’s youngest son Arthur is tasked with saving her Christmas by any means possible. As three generations of the Claus family join forces, this Christmas Eve looks set to be the most spectacular yet. From the animation studio behind Chicken Run and Wallace and Gromit, Arthur Christmas guarantees an eccentric and hilarious twist on your typical Christmas fare. Brody Rossiter

8 For those of you eagerly expecting a remake of 1999’s shark infested Deep Blue Sea, check your misguided excitement at the door and prepare yourself for an altogether more refined affair. Director Terence Davies presents another masterclass in post WWII melodrama in this adaption of Rattigan’s timeless chronicle of love and adultery. Focusing upon the self-destructive relationship of trophy wife Hester (Weisz) and RAF pilot Freddie (Hiddleston), the film depicts the emotional depths of unbridled infatuation and its devastating aftermath. Middleaged and unfulfilled, Hester escapes her former life to search for happiness with the dashing Freddie. After the relationship sours and Hester botches a suicide attempt, she is left an emotionally stranded social outcast - forced to embark upon a heart-rending journey to piece back together her life and identity. Despite a career that began in the mid 1970s, Davies has only directed four feature films to date, proving that the adage of quality over quantity still rings true. Fans of Revolutionary Road and Atonement will revel in this poignant study of class and sexuality.

8 Successful publisher Will Atenton (craig) quits his job in manhattan and relocates with his wife, Libby (Weisz), and their two daughters to a beautiful country house in the idyllic town of new Ashford, connecticut. As they settle into their new home, one of the girls claims a man was lurking outside in the dark; then, awoken one night, Will and Libby find a group of teenagers holding a séance in the basement. Will soon discovers from their neighbour, Ann Paterson (Watts), that the house holds a grim secret: their ‘dream house’ was the murder scene of a mother and her two children five years earlier, allegedly at the hands of the father, Peter Ward. Worse still, with a lack of evidence to convict him, Peter Ward has recently been released from Greenhaven Psychiatric Hospital. Will the killer return to kill again? With a stellar cast and stunning cinematography by caleb deschanel (The Spiderwick chronicles, The Passion of christ), this engrossing horror-thriller - packed with eerie suspense and blood-chilling plot twists - is well worth a trip to the flicks. 8 Stieg Larsson’s millennium series has fast become one of the 21st century’s most popular collections of novels. Spawning a trilogy of films directed by Scandinavian counterparts niels Arden oplev (The Girl with the dragon Tattoo) and daniel Alfredson (The Girl Who Played with Fire, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s nest), Larsson’s work has already proved its worth on film. With recent success The Social network and a filmography that boasts some of the greatest crime thrillers of our time, it’s no surprise that david Fincher (Seven, Zodiac) takes the reigns for this first instalment of the Hollywood series of adaptations. daniel craig stars as acclaimed journalist mikael blomkvist who teams up with computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (mara) in order to solve a missing persons case: the mysterious disappearance of Henrik vanger’s (Plummer) beloved daughter Harriet some 40 years ago. Set for a christmas release, this is not your average festive film. A welcome antidote to the tinsel and turkey overkill, I suggest you put those presents aside and get to the cinema. This is a film not to be missed. Ian Skey

8 Unlike the 2010 film clash of the Titans, Immortals isn’t simply a remake but a striking and stylish adventure loosely based on the Greek myths of Theseus and the minotaur as well as the Titanomachy (the war between the Titans and olympian gods). When King Hyperion (rourke) declares war on humanity and plots to release his fellow Titans from olympian captivity, only a peasant named Theseus (cavill) can save the world. Shunned by his fellow man and tasked by Zeus (evans) to find the legendary bow of epirus before Hyperion, Theseus must work with a priestess named Phaedra (Pinto) and a slave known as Stavros (dorff) in order to protect his homeland and save the gods from peril. From the producers of 300, expect the same style of combat and storytelling as seen in the 2006 film and clash of the Titans. Promising to be all the more mesmerising in 3d, Immortals is a must-see for any fan of Greek myths, historical fantasy or pure bloodsplattering action and adventure. Ryan Cope

8 Directed by Roger Donaldson (Species, Dante’s Peak), Justice hits cinema screens in November, promising a gritty fusion of vengeance, action and a bucket load of tension. High school teacher Nick Gerard (Cage) is enjoying a life of blissful domesticity with his musician wife Laura (Jones) - that is, until Laura is violently assaulted one night. As she lies in hospital with severe injuries, Nick is approached by the leader of a vigilante group (Pearce) who offers to wreak revenge on the perpetrator and spare Laura the trauma of a trial. In his anguish, Nick accepts. However, he soon comes to realise that this desperate agreement comes with some small print - and when he refuses to fulfill his side of the deal, things get deadly. Justice, it appears, comes with a very high price. This fast-paced visceral thriller unites a stellar cast: Nicolas Cage and Mad Men’s January Jones provide the chemistry as a couple under fire, while Guy Pearce promises to be on suave and sinister form as mysterious vigilante figure, Simon. 8 Don’t let the rather eccentric title fool you - this isn’t some laugh out loud adventure akin to Snakes on a Plane. Rather, this is a story about one man’s struggle against the injustice and oppression of children in Africa. Based on the remarkable true story of Sam Childers, a preacher who literally wields machine guns, this is a moving tale of redemption and the battle for justice. When biker-gang member Sam Childers (Butler) reassesses his life, he finds a purpose along with a new found belief in God. In a life-changing decision, he leaves his drug-dealing criminal lifestyle behind and heads to East Africa on a mission to make a difference. What he finds there is a horror he cannot stand by and allow to continue. Determined to help orphan children from the brutal Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), a teenage militia, Sam goes against all warnings by heading into enemy territory to save them. With his marriage suffering and his life at risk, Sam must fight in order to bring peace to the children’s lives - as well as his own. Ryan Cope

Director brad bird Starring Tom cruise, Jeremy renner, Paula Patton release date 26 December CONTENT icons

8 In the fourth film in the mission: Impossible series, Tom cruise reprises his role as ImF Agent ethan Hunt. When a terrorist bombing destroys the Kremlin, the United States government initiates a black ops ‘ghost protocol’ and disavows the entire Impossible mission Force. Hunt and his team are to be blamed for the attack, but are allowed to escape as part of a plan to enable them to operate in the dark, outside of their agency. However, Hunt is warned that if any member of his team is captured during their mission, they will be charged as terrorists planning to incite global nuclear war. ethan is then forced to work with ex-ImF agent brandt (renner), who knows more about Hunt and his past than even Hunt himself. director brad bird’s first live-action film sees the returning faces of Simon Pegg and ving rhames, while introducing Jeremy renner to the series. This is not just another mission: with our team off the grid with no help or contact, there hasn’t been a mission grittier and more intense than this yet. Ian J. Martin

Academy Award-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin (The Social network) provides the locker room banter whilst Pitt and Hill’s onscreen chemistry has already set tongues wagging about Academy Award nominations. From Hollywood poster boy to one of cinema’s most dedicated servants, Pitt has repeatedly made an effort to seek out the tales he feels must be told and moneyball’s true story is no exception to this admirable rule. Pitt’s pet projects depend on far more than vanity alone, as stories steeped in Americana continue to fascinate and charm critics and audiences alike. moneyball promises to be a sporting drama of the highest calibre, inspirational to the last pitch. MY WEEK WITH MARILYN

FILM credits

Director Simon Curtis Starring Michelle Williams, Eddie Redmayne,

8 After her Academy Award-nominated performances in Brokeback Mountain and Wendy and Lucy, Dawson’s Creek alumna Michelle Williams really is Hollywood hot property at the moment. So who better to play everyone’s favourite blonde bombshell, Marilyn Monroe? The film itself is spawned from a memoir written by Colin Clark, entitled The Prince, The Showgirl and Me. When he was just 23, Clark worked as an assistant on the set of the Monroe film The Prince and the Showgirl. His book wasn’t published until nearly 40 years later, although one week during his time on the shoot was missing. This is the story of that week. At the time, Monroe was working with the great Laurence Olivier and married to the playwright Arthur Miller. Her life had become stifled and everyone wanted a piece of the woman they thought they knew. During this week, Monroe describes to Clark her personal life, strong ambition and reveals the real Norma Jean. A significant line from the trailer sees Williams’ Monroe ask, “Shall I be her? Shall I be Marilyn Monroe?” This film could see Michelle Williams finally receive the Oscar she so deserves. Emma Farley

8 Director Gary Marshall (Pretty Woman) returns alongside an impressive ensemble cast in 2011’s starry romantic comedy for the festive season: New Year’s Eve. Set in New York City on the most dazzling night of the year, a series of intertwining stories of couples and singles play out on a date that celebrates love, hope and forgiveness. Starring Robert de Niro, Jessica Biel, Jon Bon Jovi, Michelle Pfeiffer and Glee star Lea Michele amongst a list of many, New Year’s Eve looks set to follow in the footsteps of Marshall’s 2010 ensemble romantic comedy Valentine’s Day. Promising to be a night to remember, the narratives take us from great highs to great lows: from Hilary Swank’s producer of the infamous Times Square New Year’s Eve Show to Robert De Niro’s dying man in hospital and Michelle Pfeiffer’s frustrated executive secretary who decides to tackle her unfilled resolutions. At a time when the entire world comes together for one night to celebrate the hope of a new year, old friends, old mistakes and new beginnings make way for this star-studded event. Thomas Mitchell

Director chris miller Starring Antonio banderas, Salma Hayek, Zach Galifianakis release date 9 December cONTENT icons

8 Since his first appearance in 2004’s Shrek 2, Antonio banderas’s smooth talking, swash-buckling tabby has captivated audiences with his big innocent eyes and sardonic wit. Puss In boots is the latest offering from dreamWorks animation, acting as a prequel to the Shrek series while giving the Latino feline centre stage. While sticking closely to the fairy tale/nursery rhyme overtones of the Shrek films, Puss In boots sees the daring hero join forces with old friend Humpty dumpty (Galifianakis) and Kitty Softpaws (Hayek), who doubles as his love interest. The trio set out to take on Jack (Thornton) and Jill (Sedaris), two dangerous outlaws who have discovered an ancient power which they are keen to unleash on the world. After a long time in production, directorial duties are handed to chris miller who is treading familiar territory with past credits including Shrek the Third, while Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy) serves as executive producer. Puss and friends will be given an added edge, with the film receiving the ever-popular 3d treatment, making for a comic caper that the kids - not to mention the adults - will definitely not want to miss. THE RUM DIARY

8 The upcoming release of The rum diary sees the unarguably fantastic Johnny depp revisiting the mad world of Hunter S. Thompson. For anyone who hasn’t seen Fear and Loathing in Las vegas, depp portrayed a drugged up lunatic, aka Thompson - one of the greatest American writers - who goes on a drug-fuelled bender in Sin city despite his literary commitments. This time round, our high-as-a-kite protagonist goes under the name of Paul Kemp. He takes on a freelance writing job for a local Puerto rican newspaper in the 1950s and struggles to deal with the culture and resident ex-patriots. In other words, picture depp getting stoned and drunk and having a manically fun yet distressing time. There is constant debate over whether Thompson truly deserves status as a great American writer because of his frequent drug and alcohol use and total lack of mental and physical control. There is no denying, however, that his creativity was limitless and pioneering regardless of his affiliations with substance abuse. Terry Gilliam isn’t directing this time round; instead, the brilliant Withnail And I’s bruce robinson will be hoping to mirror Thompson’s wackiness. Matthew Brigden

SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS

8 It’s been almost two years since Guy Ritchie first released his blisteringly entertaining take on the Sherlock Holmes legend: a film that was not only great fun for all the family but also a genuinely intriguing fast-paced thriller. Judging from the trailers, more of the same and better can be expected in Ritchie’s triumphant directorial return for A Game of Shadows. The film follows on directly from the last film when Sherlock Holmes - played by the ever-versatile Robert Downey Jr. - first learnt of the existence of the devious criminal mastermind known as Professor Moriarty (Harris). Together with his trusty companions Dr. Watson (Law), brother Mycroft Holmes (Fry) and Sim (Rapace) a Gypsy fortune-teller, Holmes must track down Moriarty before he can put his murderous plans into action. Filled with what will certainly be oodles of fantastic slow-mo induced fight sequences and peppered with Ritchie’s trademark razor sharp script, A Game of Shadows promises to deliver a five-star film that is rip-roaring good fun built atop a captivating storyline. David (Marsden) and Amy Summers (Bosworth), a screenwriter and his television actress wife, seek to escape their Hollywood lifestyle so that David can work without being interrupted. The pair returns to Amy’s small, rural hometown of Blackwood, Mississippi after the death of her father to prepare to sell the family home. As conflicts brew with the local residents - headed by Amy’s ex–boyfriend Charlie (Skarsgård), a labourer who has been hired to fix their roof with his team cracks begin to appear in their marriage. Believing that an intellectual man such as David shouldn’t have an attractive wife, Charlie and his team’s constant ogling prompts David to fire them. This leads to a violent siege at the farmhouse, with Charlie and his men attempting to break in to harm David and Amy, leaving the couple fighting for their lives. Amy Ralfe

8 don’t worry, you’re not suffering from déjà vu and this isn’t the 1982 classic horror from John carpenter. This 2011 release is a prequel set immediately before the grisly events of the original film. co-written by eric Heisserer and well known sciencefiction screenwriter ronald d. moore, creator of the re-imagined battlestar Galactica, this new instalment has the potential to live up to its predecessor. An alien corpse is found in the crash and taken to the research base where the titular Thing soon escapes. Paranoia and dread ensue as the alien changeling consumes victims and takes on their forms. 8 The cinematic wedding extravaganza of the year is set to get Twilight fanatics in a romantic frenzy, as Bella Swan and vampire Edward Cullen finally exchange vows. This highly anticipated union, which captured readers’ imaginations since the publication of Stephenie Meyer’s series, will undoubtedly be a high point in the series of films. Millions of wistful hearts will beat anxiously along with Bella’s as she walks down the aisle, publicly entwining her life with her cold-blooded lover’s once and for all. But the story certainly doesn’t end there, and the happily-ever-after isn’t even in the pair’s honeymoon on a private island off the coast of Brazil. After their first night as husband and wife, Bella discovers she’s pregnant. The couple’s true test of commitment and dedication arrives with the unknowns brought by the growing halfhuman, half-vampire baby. Add a brewing battle between the Cullens, Jacob’s wolf pack and the Volturi, and the newlyweds’ bliss is short-lived. The choices that change their lives forever will certainly make this penultimate instalment in the series burst with drama, passion and gorgeous, unforgettable imagery. Cheyenne Hill
