THE STUFF OF NIGHTMARES Step right up as film’s fantasy ringmaster, Guillermo del Toro, escorts us down Nightmare Alley. Ladies and gentlemen…the carnival is coming to town. WORDS ROBB SHEPPARD IN CINEMAS 21 JANUARY

Director Guillermo del Toro / Starring Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Willem Dafoe, Toni Collette, Rooney Mara / Genre Crime, Drama, Thriller With spectacular shows, overpriced snacks, and suspicious games of “skill”, the carnival can be an expensive affair. Throw in Bradley Cooper’s unscrupulous chancer and Cate Blanchett’s savvy psychiatrist, a duo hell-bent on swindling unsuspecting punters, then the cost could become so much more than just cold, hard cash. A fresh take on William Lindsey Gresham’s novel rather than a remake of the 1947 film of the same name, Nightmare Alley feels more like a film noir thriller than the flat-out fantasy we’ve come to expect from

Guillermo del Toro. As a result, the auteur’s atmospheric adaptation feels even more threatening, with femme fatales, corrupt con men, and the promise of a disorienting twist in the tale. If that doesn’t sound like the greatest show on Earth, then the cast lining up to work with del Toro surely will. As well as Cooper and Blanchett, this star-studded show also puts Willem Dafoe, Toni Collette, Rooney Mara, and del Toro’s perennial favourite Ron Perlman on the billing. “Is it a beast…or is it a man?” asks Dafoe’s carnival barker of his central attraction, but also of Cooper’s con man. With the latter, we’re betting he’s a little bit of both.

del toro’s dark dreams Hellboy

The comic book cre ature feature didn’t garner much awards attention, but it did bring big bucks from the boxoffice. It remains a great shame that Ron Perlman’s de-horned, devilish anti-hero nev er got that trilogy.

Pan’s Labyrinth

Attracting a triumv irate of critical acclaim and awards, Pan’s Labyrinth is most notable for its iconic creepy creatures; primarily the Pale Ma n, whose eyes fit snuggly into his palms.

The Shape Of Wate

Whilst flirting with fantasy, the love affair betwe en Sally Hawkins’ cleaner and Doug Jones’ amphibious hum anoid hybrid resulted in fou r Oscars in all, includ ing Best Picture and Best Dir ector, and is widely consid ered to be Guillermo’s cro wning achievement.

Director Kenneth Branagh / Starring Kenneth Branagh, Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, Emma Mackey, Dawn French / Genre Crime, Drama, Mystery As teased in the final moments of 2017’s Murder On The Orient Express, literature’s most famous moustachioed detective is returning to cinemas for a new adaptation of Death On The Nile. Marking the third onscreen interpretation of Agatha Christie’s classic murder mystery, this modern incarnation promises a steamy affair set on a riverboat and brings yet another star-studded cast of talent on board. Heading up the guest list is, of course, actor-director Kenneth Branagh, who this time welcomes Wonder Woman’s Gal Gadot,

Black Panther’s Letitia Wright, and comedian Russell Brand along for a twist-filled ride. The list goes on as Annette Bening, Tom Bateman, Armie Hammer, Ali Fazal, Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders, Rose Leslie, and Sophie Okonedo round out another stellar ensemble. Together they make up the shadowy line-up of suspects Poirot must assess, analyse, and interrogate after a wealthy heiress is found dead. This modern version of Death On The Nile breathes new life into one of Agatha Christie’s most celebrated whodunnits, seamlessly merging practical sets and CGI effects to sweep audiences away to a period-accurate 1930s Cairo. Everyone is a suspect once more as Poirot quickly learns there’s no such thing as a holiday for the world’s greatest detective.

THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS In only the second year of his crime fighting career and with violence, vigilantism, and vengeance on his mind…Robert Pattinson emerges from the shadows as The Batman. WORDS ROBB SHEPPARD IN CINEMAS MARCH 4

Director Matt Reeves / Starring Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano / Genre Action, Crime, Thriller There’s no such thing as too much Batman. Just when you think you’ve seen it all from Gotham’s great detective, a fresh new take swoops into cinemas to remind you why he’s the coolest crimefighter around. And that’s exactly what Matt Reeves’ menacing The Batman promises to do. The tone is set from the moment we first meet Robert Pattinson’s brooding Bruce Wayne. With none-more-black backdrops, brutal beatdowns, and a grunge soundtrack, this will be the darkest Dark Knight yet. And that’s little wonder as this tortured iteration of the character is also the most stripped back, and follows the grief torn, novice vigilante as he contends with Paul Dano’s enigmatic Edward Nashton, Zoë

THE BATMAN ▼ CLICK ME ▼

Kravitz’ cunning Selina Kyle, and an unrecognisable Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot. Fresh from his Planet Of The Apes trilogy, writer and director Matt Reeves returns with a proven track record of carrying the weight of a franchise with over fifty years of onscreen history and assembles a star-studded ensemble cast and an exciting creative team to bring the heroes and villains of Gotham to life like never before. Most exciting of all is Oscar-winner Michael Giacchino who supplies an ear-shattering score that’s sure to rival previous Batcomposers Hans Zimmer, Danny Elfman, and Neal Hefti. With its bold new take on the beloved character, Pattinson’s caped crusader is sure to be both the hero we need…and the hero we deserve.

Being The Bat ROBERT PATTINSON

Focusing less on physique and more on psychology, this Bruce Wayne dials down the billionaire bad boy act. Instead, with all that spare time, he delves into the corruption at the heart of Gotham which may involve his own family.

WILL ARNETT

The LEGO Batman Movie pokes fun at every inch of the Bat-verse, including Mr Wayne. Arnett’s Bruce Wayne is a self-proclaimed “bon vivant, gallivanter, playboy… Gotham’s most eligible batchelor, like, 90 years in a row!” He’s also a whole lot of fun.

MICHAEL KEATON

Keaton’s eccentric, unassuming take on Bruce Wayne is the furthest from his alter ego yet, but as we found out in Tim Burton’s Batman, he could still get nuts. Keaton will don the cowl again in The Flash, coming to cinemas soon.

January / February 2022

If the ensemble are going to get their shot at stardom, they’ll need to impress music mogul Jimmy Crystal – a no-nonsense wolf who’s just like Simon Cowell, but with a bite as bad as his bark. It’s here that they’ll turn to a real legend, Bono’s Clay Calloway, a solitary lion who’s not performed for over fifteen years. Buster’s quest to convince Clay to come out of retirement, while also helping his old stars shine brighter than ever in the face of new demons, promises to be another spectacle full of Illumination’s trademark heart and humour. This tale about the healing power of music will unite animals of all kinds (and humans of all ages) while ensuring families in need of entertainment find what they’re looking for.

WHO HAS THE X FACTOR? Bono is Clay Calloway The Irish rock legend and U2 return with new music. Though reluctant to return to the limelight, it’s hard to argue against this roaring rock ‘n’ roll performer.

Tori Kelly is Meena This elephant has the classic X Factor story: initially too shy to perform before conquering her fears. She’ll be tested more than ever as a larger audience awaits.

Scarlett Johansson is Ash If rock is more your thing, maybe this spiky porcupine will steal the show this time around. Her and Clay’s A Star Is Born-style cover of a U2 classic is pure singalong territory.

Taron Egerton is Johnny He had audiences off their seats with a rousing rendition of I’m Still Standing, now the go-getting gorilla is adding dancing to his repertoire for the brandnew show – but only if he can impress his cruel choreographer.

the start of a totally new venture for the veteran game publisher. Players familiar with Uncharted’s efforts on PS3 and PS4 won’t suffer from déjà vu, though, as the movie remixes story elements and spectacular set pieces from the games to create an all-new story suitable for a multigenerational audience. Hot on Holland’s tail throughout the movie is Antonio Banderas’ ruthless villain, warming up his globetrotting boots before his upcoming appearance in Indiana Jones 5. His inclusion, and developer Naughty Dog’s seal of approval, combine with a strong sense of adventure to ensure this buccaneering blockbuster sets a firm foundation to launch a potential Uncharted movie trilogy.

MODERN GAME TO FILM ADAPTATIONS Assassin’s Creed

Even Michael Fassbender’s star power couldn’t save this take on Ubisoft’s open-world stealth series from being a bit of a stinker. The action sequences set in history were well choreographed, but a focus on present-day events led Assassin’s Creed wayward.

Tomb Raider

While Angelina Jolie’s tenure as Lara Croft is now somewhat dated, 2018’s hard reboot with Alicia Vikander showed the promise of what a modern Tomb Raider movie could be. Grittier, more grounded, and with exciting set pieces, a sequel is on the way.

Mortal Kombat

A Mortal Kombat movie with no Mortal Kombat tournament? 2021’s reinterpretation of NetherRealm’s classic fighter might lack the campiness of the 1995 original, but more than made up for it with visceral non-stop action and wallto-wall fights – particularly those featuring Scorpion and Sub-Zero.

DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES The stakes are high as the Allies attempt an audacious deception to trick the enemy and turn the tide of World War 2, but will they believe the story of a dead man? WORDS ADAM MATULEWICZ IN CINEMAS 14 JANUARY

Director John Madden / Starring Colin Firth, Matthew Macfadyen, Johnny Flynn / Genre Drama, War Ahead of their strike on the shores of Sicily in 1943, the Allies had one major concern: the Nazis knew they were coming. To throw the odds in their favour, the only thing for it was to deceive the minds behind the greatest threat the world had ever seen. Colin Firth is intelligence officer Ewen Montagu in the retelling of this extraordinary story that shows a different side of war. With one hundred thousand British lives on the line, and the prospect of more should they fail, Montagu and his fellow officer Charles Cholmondeley, played by Succession’s Matthew Macfadyen, must take the fight to the shadows. But instead of boats and guns, they’re armed with a corpse and false papers.

OPERATION MINCEMEAT 20

January / February 2022

Their plan is to obtain a dead body, dress it up as a British soldier, plant “top secret” documents on it, and float it into enemy territory so they will take the bait and believe Greece is the intended target, not Sicily. With perhaps the most important mission of the Second World War on their shoulders, and no guarantee of success, Montagu and Cholmondeley have their work cut out with Jason Isaacs’ Admiral John Godfrey to convince, Simon Russell Beale’s Winston Churchill to please, and many lives at risk. Director John Madden sheds a light on the shady side of the Second World War with a stranger-than-fiction spy story with a license for thrills, tension, surprises and even some romance along the way. Operation Mincemeat must not fail!

NO TIME TO DIE Operation Mincemeat required great minds to make it work and had to be expertly written. From working with the country’s best spies to writing about everyone’s fictional favourite, Operation Mincemeat owes its success to the man who wrote the mission plans in the first place: Lieutenant Commander Ian Fleming. Operation Mincemeat reveals his role in the extraordinary story, with Johnny Flynn starring. After the war, Fleming introduced the world to his deadliest weapon yet: a fictional intelligence MI6 agent best known as Bond, James Bond. Based on individuals he met during his military days, 007 has heroically saved the world many times over. Only last year did he arguably save cinema with the release of No Time To Die; a lifeline for the industry with a record-breaking British box-office return.

WORDS ROBB SHEPPARD IN CINEMAS 21 JANUARY

Director Kenneth Branagh / Starring Jude Hill, Jamie Dornan, Caitriona Balfe, Judi Dench / Genre Drama Written and directed by Kenneth Branagh, the semi-autobiographical story follows a young boy named Buddy and his working-class family as they struggle to navigate life in a community that’s destabilising around them. But Belfast isn’t all about escalating tension, it’s about humanity during times of turmoil. There are moments of joy, acts of bravery, and journeys of self-discovery in an inspiring story evocative of Life Is Beautiful, Billy Elliot, and Jojo Rabbit. The bleakness of sixties Belfast is contrasted by a

beautiful black and white aesthetic and a soundtrack that’s a treat for the ears too. To bring his coming-of-age story to cinemas, Branagh assembles an all-star cast. Caitriona Balfe continues her rise as Ma, Jamie Dornan returns to his Northern Irish roots as Pa, Ciarán Hinds steps in as the grandfather everybody would want, and, of course, Judi Dench needs very little introduction as Granny. However, the entire film rests on the shoulders of newcomer Jude Hill who stars as Buddy. Through this spirited nine-year-old, we experience life growing up in the swinging sixties, The Troubles, and family friction in a poignant film that’s sure to garner attention this awards season.
