AI, ROBOT
The Creator
IN CINEMAS 28 SEPTEMBER
Director Gareth Edwards / Starring
John David Washington, Gemma
Chan, Ken Watanabe, Allison Janney, Ralph Ineson / Genre Sci-Fi, Thriller
An artificial intelligence has become too clever for its own good and turned on its creators, leaving humankind facing a life-or-death decision: switch it off or become its victim. No, this isn’t the nightly news, but the new and exciting theoretical sci-fi action-thriller starring Tenet’s John David Washington.
Much too late, humanity moves to defend itself by striking at the AI to take back control. But in the process, they discover that the weapon is merely an AI child struggling to make sense of the world and its place within it. Which of our primal instincts will come out on top? The urge to care or the need for self-preservation?
In holding a Black Mirror to the world we live in and reflecting a frighteningly all too real potential future, The Creator is an intriguing and apposite concept in itself, but it becomes unmissable when you consider it’s directed and co-written by Gareth Edwards.
The British filmmaker’s breakout Monsters did mind-blowing postapocalyptic survival spectacle on a shoestring budget and Rogue One is widely considered to be the very best of the Disney-era Star Wars. With The Creator sitting somewhere between the two, you can expect a thought-provoking and action-packed exploration of what it is to be human.
The Terminator
Skynet becomes self-aware and sets in motion the chain of events that starts World War 3. Six movies and one small screen series of this cautionary tale hasn’t halted humanity’s advancement in AI.
AI. Artificial Intelligence
Longing to be a real boy, young David is the first Mecha with real feelings and an undying love for his absent mother in this undervalued sci-fi masterpiece that was started by Kubrick and finished by Spielberg.
M3GAN
Like Child’s Play for the tech-savvy Gen Z, M3GAN is a life-sized doll solely programmed to protect young Cady from harm. School bullies and even friends and family soon realise that they should have taken the batteries out of Cady’s robo-bestie long ago.
It’s mankind vs a machine of their invention as the fight for the future of the human race becomes a question of killing our creation or being killed ourselves.

IN CINEMAS 6 OCTOBER
Director Oliver Parker / Starring
Michael Caine, Glenda Jackson / Genre Biography, Drama, Romance
At almost ninety, nobody expected Bernard Jordan to make headlines around the world, least of all the man himself. But in the summer of 2014, he did just that.
After one of his usual walks on the seafront with his wife Rene, Bernie reveals his wish to travel to Normandy for the seventieth anniversary of the D-Day landings only to be denied by care home staff. In the true spirit of the Greatest Generation, Bernie keeps calm and carries on with his plan – staging a “great escape” from the care home, with his war medals hidden beneath his coat, and boarding a ferry to France.
From the BAFTA-nominated director of An Ideal Husband and Dad’s Army and the BAFTA-nominated writer of Made In Dagenham, the
film explores the story behind the headlines, showing Bernie and Rene fall in love during the war and how that love endures through sixty years of marriage.
The Great Escaper is also a moving memorial to Caine’s co-star, the late Glenda Jackson. Sharing the screen for the first time together in almost fifty years, the two-time Academy Awardwinning legends are a perfect match as husband and wife in this celebration of long-lasting love.

BAD MOON
Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro finally unite onscreen in Martin Scorsese’s epic interpretation of the Reign of Terror. WORDS AARON POTTER
Killers Of The Flower Moon
IN CINEMAS 20 OCTOBER
Director Martin Scorsese / Starring
Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone / Genre Crime, Western
Set in 1920s Oklahoma, Killers
Of The Flower Moon depicts one of the darkest and most tragic chapters in American history, chronicling the cruel murders that occurred alongside white settlers’ underhanded acquisition of Osage Native American land that was rich with valuable oil.
Fresh from his three-hour long gangster epic The Irishman, legendary director Martin Scorsese returns with an expansive period-set crime mystery that reunites him with two of his most famous acting muses.
Gangs Of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island, The
Wolf Of Wall Street, and now Killers Of The Flower Moon. In his sixth Scorsese picture, DiCaprio stars as Ernest Burkhart, a seemingly compassionate cattleman who falls in love with the Osage family’s Mollie Kyle, played by Lily Gladstone. As blood and oil are spilled, Burkhart must decide if it’s money or love that matters to him most, while the FBI attempts to solve the string of grizzly killings happening around him.
As expected for a director of Scorsese’s calibre, the film touts an A-list supporting cast that includes the likes of Jesse Plemons, Brendan Fraser, and of course Robert De Niro. For their tenth film together, De Niro plays William Hale, a prominent figure in the Osage Nation who takes Burkhart under his wing.
Western crime epics don’t get more enrapturing than this.
Taxi Driver
Taxi Driver marked Scorsese’s second time working with Robert De Niro and cemented their partnership as one of cinema’s best. We’d strongly advise against any cinema trips with Travis Bickle.
Raging Bull
A boxing story unlike any other, De Niro and Scorsese’s brutal biographical sports drama about a struggling boxer sees the actor in a truly transformative role, gaining 27kg to play Jake LaMotta during his final years and rendering the film dangerously true to life.
Goodfellas
Gangster epics don’t come much better than Scorsese’s 1990 classic that documents the rise and fall of the late Ray Liotta’s Henry Hill, including his criminal exploits working for De Niro’s Jimmy Conway.

A Haunting In Venice
IN CINEMAS 15 SEPTEMBER
Director Kenneth Branagh / Starring
Kenneth Branagh, Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Dornan, Tina Fey, Kelly Reilly / Genre Crime, Horror, Mystery, Thriller
Retired and in exile, Hercule Poirot has settled into the quiet life in Venice with his murder-solving days behind him… or so he thinks.
When tragedy befalls a séance in an eerie palazzo long thought to be haunted, a reluctant Poirot is pulled right back into the fray. Having identified the killers responsible for the Murder On The Orient Express and solved a Death On The Nile, the debonair detective finds his skills tested like never before on a Halloween night he’ll never forget as he offers to help a grieving mother solve the murder of her daughter.
Kenneth Branagh returns to direct and star in his third Agatha
Christie mystery, reprising his role as the moustachioed master detective who’s this time joined by an ensemble line-up of Jamie Dornan, Kelly Reilly, Tina Fey, Emma Laird, Camille Cottin, Jude Hill, Michelle Yeoh, and more.
Things just got deadly serious for Poirot as he faces his most frightful case yet, and possibly a ghost to boot. But without ghostbusting training, he’s going to have to do it the old-fashioned way in this haunting whodunnit filled with danger and mysticism.

ONE-MAN ARMY
Denzel Washington
The Equalizer 3
IN CINEMAS 1 SEPTEMBER
It’s been almost a decade since we first met the humble hardware store worker who turned out to be a highly-trained killer. Former CIA operative Robert McCall has since made a name for himself on his quest to atone for the sins of the secret life he wants to leave behind by using his very particular set of skills to clean the streets of Boston. But taking down street thugs, pimps, crooked cops, and Russian gangsters on his own turf is nothing compared to what he faces in his thrilling final chapter.
McCall has already proven that his justice has no borders with flying visits to Moscow and Turkey and now he expands his jurisdiction to a new, permanent home he’s found for himself in Southern Italy – a place where he hopes he can put his dark past behind him once and for all.
But just when he thinks he’s finally fulfilled the promise to his late wife, the lethal protector is called into action again.
Upon discovering the community that’s welcomed him is under the control of a brutal crime syndicate, McCall is triggered out of retirement. Only this time, he may have met his match and he’ll need all of his close combat expertise, more booby traps, and all of the fight he’s got left if he’s to equalise the battle against the mafia.
Partners For Justice
The return of Robert McCall marks the fifth collaboration between Denzel Washington and director Antoine Fuqua. As they close the book on The Equaliser, we look back at two other bringers of justice their creative partnership delivered.
Alonzo Harris Training Day
The renegade, no-nonsense narcotics detective has a unique outlook on justice and is more of a gangster than a cop. Washington’s towering performance at the heart of Fuqua’s masterpiece earned him his Best Actor Oscar.
Sam
Chisholm
The Magnificent Seven
Serving justice by any means necessary is also the modus operandi of Washington’s bounty hunter, who leads a misfit band of hired guns to liberate a frontier town from a villainous baron in the wild reimagining of the western classic.
Director Antoine Fuqua / Starring Denzel Washington, Dakota Fanning, David Denman / Genre Action, Thriller

WHEN YOU WISH UPON A STAR
WORDS AARON POTTER
Wish
IN CINEMAS 24 NOVEMBER
Directors Chris Buck, Fawn Veerasunthorn / Starring Ariana DeBose, Chris Pine, Alan Tudyk / Genre Animation, Fantasy, Musical
Wishing upon a star isn’t as straightforward as it seems.
In the year that celebrates one-hundred years of Disney, the animation studio is still working its magic and spins a fantastical new tale that feels as fresh as anything we’ve seen from them before. Marrying traditional computer animation techniques with a mesmerising watercolour aesthetic, Wish has a truly otherworldly visual style that’s sure to capture audiences’ imagination in a whole new way, alongside the expected flurry of heartfelt characters and sweet songs.
At the heart of the story is Asha, a seventeen-year-old citizen of the Kingdom of Rosas who takes matters into her own hands after she senses a rising darkness.
Voiced by West Side Story’s Ariana DeBose, the headstrong girl soon gets more than she bargained for after wishing upon a star only to find the star itself has other plans and falls from the sky intent on granting everyone’s wish.
With a voice cast that also includes Disney Animation favourite Alan Tudyk – who adds another animal to his roster in following Hei Hei, Tuk Tuk, and Pico the toucan to voice Asha’s beloved pet goat Valentino –and Chris Pine, as Rosas’ evil ruler King Magnifico, this next adventure has all the makings of being the next animated modern classic you’d wish for.
Five Children And It
Adapted for both small and big screen several times, E. Nesbit’s beloved childhood novel introduces a moustachioed sand critter who grants wishes with a catch. The five children find It a constant source of fun… and frustration.
Big
Tom Hanks delivers a star turn as the twelve-year-old boy who one day wishes to be a grown up, only for it to come true the very next day. He quickly learns, however, that there’s more to being big than late nights and sweets for breakfast.
Aladdin
Easily the animated Disney classic with the most wishes throughout. Both Robin Williams and Will Smith tear up the screen as genies anyone would be happy to befriend.
After a mischievous star falls from the sky, a young girl must go the distance to protect her one and only wish.
