KILLER STYLE Ridley Scott throws open the doors to reveal the inner workings of the House Of Gucci in his star-studded retelling of the scandal that changed the fashion family forever. WORDS ROBB SHEPPARD IN CINEMAS 26 NOVEMBER

Director Ridley Scott / Starring Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Jared Leto / Genre Crime, Drama, Thriller Truth can be stranger than fiction, and the true story of Patrizia Reggiani and the Gucci family has to be seen to be believed. When glamorous Reggiani marries fashion figurehead Maurizio Gucci, what starts as a fairytale becomes the focal point of a contentious court case and a mysterious murder trial. The whole world was gripped by the ensuing storm of scandal, secrets, and shady dealings. Based on the book by journalist Sarah Gay Forden, director Ridley Scott takes us deep inside the House Of Gucci with stark eighties stylisation, including over-the-top automobiles, eyebrowraising fashion choices, and a killer soundtrack.

Speaking of killer, let’s talk about the cast. Lady Gaga is set to steal the show as socialite Reggiani, with the ever-engaging Adam Driver as Maurizio, Gucci’s new majority shareholder. Jared Leto is unrecognisable as the scheming Paolo, while Al Pacino looks totally in his element as Aldo, the former head of the fashion family. Jeremy Irons and Salma Hayek complete the striking ensemble. All of the above sets House Of Gucci as one of this season’s biggest hits and a real-must see from this year’s winter collection of cinema – even if you don’t know your Prada from your Primark.

LET’S GO GAGA! BORN THIS WAY Before she was Lady Gaga, Stefani Germanotta performed in clubs at the age of fourteen and, by seventeen, was one of only twenty people in the world to gain early admission to New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.

THE FAME In 2010, and just two years after the release of her debut album, Lady Gaga made the cover of Time magazine’s double issue titled The 100 Most Influential People in the World.

A STAR IS BORN As art imitates life and vice versa, Gaga won the Oscar for Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Song) for co-writing Shallow from 2018’s A Star Is Born. Expect even more gongs for her role as the real “Black Widow” in House Of Gucci..

Framed for murder and struggling to deal with life unmasked, Peter Parker seeks help from a wise friend, but when Strange’s spell unleashes chaos, his entire world comes into question. WORDS HARRY FAINT IN CINEMAS 17 DECEMBER

Director Jon Watts / Starring Tom Holland, Zendaya, Benedict Cumberbatch / Genre Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi Fresh from his summer school trip, Peter Parker finds his life in New York City turned upside down when his secret identity is revealed by the Daily Bugle. What’s more, he’s also in the frame for a drone attack on London that claimed the life of Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio. Unable to cope with living under the eye of intense public scrutiny, Peter makes his way to an old friend to ask a big favour. Doctor Strange agrees to cast a spell that will make everyone forget Spider-Man’s civilian identity, the impact of that hits home as Peter’s

relationships and treasured memories are put on the chopping block. However, this realisation comes all too late as Strange’s spell goes awry and sends them spiralling into the multiverse where old enemies from multiple alternate realities await. Villains from Spider-Man’s cinematic past return and enter the MCU to wreak havoc and put Peter to the ultimate test. Also returning for this action-packed web-slinging adventure are Zendaya’s MJ, Jacob Batalon’s Ned, and J.K. Simmons’ J. Jonah Jameson, the notorious head of the Daily Bugle who famously hates Spider-Man. So much is still unknown about who or what awaits within the MCU multiverse, but one thing that’s for certain, this is one multidimensional story that can’t be missed.

TOBEY MAGUIRE Maguire was the first Peter Parker to grace our screens, playing the superhero in Sam Raimi’s hugely-successful trilogy that sees him face Sandman, Venom, Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, and Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus.

ANDREW GARFIELD Garfield puts a fresh spin on the character in two films where Spidey goes web-head-to-head with a new roster of enemies, including Lizard, Electro, and Rhino.

TOM HOLLAND After his unforgettable arrival during Civil War, Tom Holland’s Spidey sky-rocketed to Avenger status under the guidance of his mentor, Iron Man. So far, his adventures have put him up against Vulture, Mysterio, and even Thanos. Now, his Spidey-sense is tingling as fearsome foes from films gone by make a return.

Four decades after saving New York from ghosts, ghouls, and a giant marshmallow man, the Ghostbusters are a distant memory. When something strange awakens in a sleepy suburban town, a new generation step forward to fend off the supernatural. WORDS AARON POTTER IN CINEMAS 18 NOVEMBER

Director Jason Reitman / Starring Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, Paul Rudd / Genre Adventure, Comedy, Sci-Fi Hollywood’s recent habit to “Force Awakens” a franchise has had a mixed hit rate. It takes more than throwing a couple of cameos and easter eggs among a new cast of characters, paving a respectful path forward requires a touch more TLC. Thankfully, the new canonical instalment in the much beloved Ghostbusters series looks to have the recipe just right. Helmed by Jason Reitman, the son of the original films’ director Ivan, Ghostbusters: Afterlife pays tribute to the first films and the late Harold Ramis by centring on the exploits of Dr Egon Spengler’s daughter and two grandchildren. Soon after moving into their grandfather’s dilapidated farmhouse in Oklahoma, a series of supernatural disturbances occur that are all begging to be investigated. Aided

by Paul Rudd’s enthusiastic teacher Mr Grooberson, the new generation of Ghostbusters answer the call in a new ghost-laden, goosebumpinducing family adventure that puts proton packs, mini Stay Pufts, the Ecto-1, and everything else that made Ghostbusters so beloved at the heart of a new story. An exciting line-up of newcomers plus the rumoured return of original cast members Dan Aykroyd, Annie Potts, Sigourney Weaver, Ernie Hudson, and yes, even Bill Murray signals an expert blend of the old and new that promises to welcome a new generation and give Ghostbusters fans the sequel they’ve been waiting thirty-two years to see.

A New Ghostbusting Generation

Mckenna Grace Fresh off her brief, but standout performances in I, Tonya and Captain Marvel, Mckenna Grace looks near unrecognisable as Egon’s granddaughter Phoebe. She takes after him as the bookworm of the group, thrust into adventure when trouble arrives in Summerville.

Paul Rudd Paul Rudd lends his loveable charm to the role of Mr Grooberson, a teacher familiar with Summerville and its history. He is, therefore, quick to question the earthquakes in a town “with no fault lines” and opens up the ultimate can of worms.

Finn Wolfhard If there’s one person who knows all about discovering spooky goings-on it’s Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard. It’s sure to come in handy, too, as his character Trevor swiftly find himself amidst the supernatural, aiding his sister as the Ecto-1’s new designated driver.

THE CHOICE IS YOURS Troubled by uncertain memories, Neo finds himself back in the Matrix. After bumping into an old flame, he begins to realise things are not what they seem as the game-changing sci-fi franchise returns to take us deeper down the rabbit hole. WORDS HARRY FAINT IN CINEMAS 22 DECEMBER

Director Lana Wachowski / Starring Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II / Genre Action, Sci-Fi Thomas Anderson is living a life unfulfilled. Assisted by a daily dose of suspicious blue pills, he’s blind to his previous life as “Neo” – the One – and unaware that he’s living a simulated lie in the Matrix. It’s not until a chance encounter with a familiar stranger when he starts to notice the glitches in the system, and that everything is far from what it seems. The stranger is none other than Trinity, who’s also oblivious to their shared past, their relationship, and their history fighting side by side in the revolution against the machines. Morpheus, their old friend, arrives to mentor them in a war many thought had been won. Now, it’s time for them to wake up and fight.

The Matrix Resurrections marks a return to the sci-fi franchise beloved by many and brings Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss back to their iconic roles under the direction of visionary filmmaker Lana Wachowski. Morpheus, however, has been “rebooted” by Candyman’s Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Christina Ricci, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas are among the other exciting new faces joining the franchise. With so much unknown and so many burning questions still unanswered, the only way to find out is by following the white rabbit to re-enter the Matrix.

Will Smith steps into the role as Richard Williams, a father determined to turn his two daughters, Venus and Serena, into the world’s biggest tennis stars. WORDS AARON POTTER IN CINEMAS 19 NOVEMBER

Director Reinaldo Marcus Green / Starring Will Smith, Demi Singleton, Saniyya Sidney / Genre Biography, Drama How much would you sacrifice to be the best in your field? That’s not only the question Serena and Venus Williams faced when setting out to achieve global stardom, but one for their father, too. Based on the true story of the coach with unparalleled ambition for his two daughters, King Richard is the unflinching account of the man behind the women who rose up from the dangerous Compton streets to become the celebrated sports superstars they are today. Will Smith appears equally

KING RICHARD

determined as Richard Williams, serving up more of the heartfelt poignancy he’s impressed audiences with on several occasions throughout his career, but most memorably in Ali and The Pursuit Of Happyness. Under the direction of exciting breakout director Reinaldo Marcus Green, Smith is joined by a highprofile cast that includes Jon Bernthal, Aunjanue Ellis, and Saniyya Sidney and Demi Singleton who play young Venus and Serena respectively. Such a high calibre of talent both behind and in front of the camera already has King Richard tipped to potentially win big come awards season. Could this be the first time Will Smith gets the award for best leading male performance?

Wimbledon Mixing rom-com with sports drama isn’t new, but the charm of Paul Bettany’s journeyman tennis player helped to render Wimbledon a British cult classic. His relationship with co-star Kirsten Dunst sparkles on screen, further selling this happy-go-lucky underdog story.

Borg Vs McEnroe Few matches will go down in tennis history as much as the dramatic bout between Björn Borg and John McEnroe in the 1980 Men’s Wimbledon final. The events leading up to and during this match is the subject of 2017’s critical darling.

Battle Of The Sexes This 70s-set biopic focusses on the real-life rivalry between tennis icons Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. Both Emma Stone and Steve Carrell blend into their roles with ease, resulting in an entertaining sports dramedy that shows how far the sport and society has come.

NO REST FOR THE WICKED Kenneth Branagh brings Poirot back to the big screen, this time swapping train carriage for cruise liner in the star-studded sequel to Murder On The Orient Express. WORDS AARON POTTER IN CINEMAS 11 FEBRUARY

Director Kenneth Branagh / Starring Kenneth Branagh, Gal Gadot, Emma Mackey / Genre Crime, Drama, Mystery As teased in the final moments of 2017’s Murder On The Orient Express, literature’s most famous moustachioed detective is returning to cinemas for a new adaptation of Death On The Nile. Marking the third onscreen interpretation of Agatha Christie’s classic murder mystery, this modern incarnation promises a steamy affair set on a riverboat and brings yet another star-studded cast of talent on board. Heading up the guest list is, of course, actor-director Kenneth Branagh, who this time welcomes Wonder Woman’s Gal Gadot, Black Panther’s Letitia Wright, and comedian Russell Brand along for a twist-filled ride. The list goes on as Annette Bening, Tom Bateman, Armie Hammer, Ali Fazal, Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders, Rose Leslie, and Sophie Okonedo round out another stellar ensemble. Together they make up the shadowy line-up of suspects Poirot must assess, analyse, and interrogate after a wealthy heiress is found dead. This modern version of Death On The Nile breathes new life into one of Agatha Christie’s most celebrated whodunnits, seamlessly merging practical sets and CGI effects to sweep audiences away to a period-accurate 1930s Cairo. Everyone is a suspect once more as Poirot quickly learns there’s no such thing as a holiday for the world’s greatest detective.
