SILENCE IS SURVIVAL

Cinema’s Silent Killers Everything’s being kept very hush-hush with A Quiet Place and the closest we’ve got to a glimpse of its monsters are some ominous claw marks. With that in mind, here are the scariest horror movies that keep their monster hidden, for the most part.

JAWS

They can’t hunt you if they can’t hear you. Mysterious killers are on the prowl in a nearsilent horror that will leave you gasping for air.

The mechanical shark’s breakdowns forced Spielberg to show it less, and with the help of some famous dun-duns, this luckily resulted in some serious suspense.

WORDS LEE CURTIS

A shaky-cam style gave its scares stark authenticity but what makes this genrecreator so haunting was that we never see a witch.

isten closely. Move carefully. Never make a sound. Three rules you must never break if you want to stay alive, because in this inventive post-apocalyptic horror, the secret to surviving is staying silent. Co-written and directed by John Krasinski, A Quiet Place follows a family of four who live soundlessly in a remote cabin in the woods. They use sign language to communicate, tip-toe through their derelict home on a marked path to

avoid creaking floorboards, and use sand to mask their footsteps as they forage in the forest. But their vow of silence isn’t an alternative lifestyle choice; it’s the only thing keeping them alive. Terrifying supernatural terrors with hyper-sensitive hearing surround them and hunt anything that makes a sound. Their dedication to living by the rules has kept them alive but during a quiet game of Monopoly, where cotton balls replace the board pieces, one of the children accidentally knocks over a gas lantern and all hell breaks loose as the terrifying hunters are alerted to the sound. No longer able to hide in the safety of silence, the family are faced with only one option . . . run.

dapted from the 2008 novel of the same name, The Guernsey Literary And Potato Peel Pie Society is a poignant and gripping historical tale of vast emotional strength in the face of great danger.

The story follows spirited journalist Juliet Ashton and her meetings with the titular society in the aftermath of World War II. She quickly learns of the struggles they faced and the bonds they formed during the German occupation of the island of Guernsey and decides to document their anecdotes in book. Downton Abbey’s Lily James takes a leading role alongside a robust supporting cast including Michiel Huisman, Matthew Goode, and fellow Downton star Jessica Brown Findlay.

Director Mike Newell is charged with adapting the New York Times Bestseller onto the big screen. With Newell’s work including acclaimed films such as Four Weddings And A Funeral and Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire, it would seem this timeless tale is in good hands. Comprised of a lyrical narrative of love, loss, and friendship, a charming cast, an accomplished director, and celebrated source material, this is one society worth joining.

Thanos.

The Mad Titan Thanos has been behind much of the strife in the MCU, including Loki’s invasion of New York, and the Infinity Stone conflict in Guardians Of The Galaxy. In the comic books, his rise to "big bad" status began in 1991, with the Infinity Gauntlet series, in which he killed almost every Marvel hero in the universe. He is the last of the Eternals, gods from the beginning of time. Bionically enhanced from birth, he is now the most powerful Eternal in history - stronger than the Hulk and with genius-level intelligence. He is father to Gomora and Nebula from Guardians Of The Galaxy. Thanos’ name is a modification of the ancient Greek word "Thanatos" who was the personification of death.

At the heart of this culmination of a decade-long franchise is Thanos’ destructive power, which means the MCU as we know it will cease to exist. It is widely expected that several high-profile heroes will meet their end by his hand. And with so many actors now falling out of contract, this could be the last chance to see your favourite Avengers.
