Tammy
Released 15 auGust / director Patrick Hughes / starring Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li / Genre Action, Adventure, Thriller
Released 4 July / director Ben Falcone / starring Melissa McCarthy, Susan Sarandon, Dan Aykroyd / Genre Comedy
The third installment of the expendables sees Barney (Stallone), Christmas (Statham) and the rest of the team come face-to-face with Conrad Stonebanks (Gibson), who years ago co-founded The expendables with Barney. Stonebanks subsequently became a ruthless arms trader and someone who Barney was forced to kill... or so he thought. Stonebanks, who eluded death once before, is now making it his mission to end The expendables - but Barney has other plans. Barney decides that he has to fight old blood with new blood, and brings in new team members, recruiting individuals who are younger, faster and more tech-savvy. The latest mission becomes a clash of classic old-school style versus high-tech expertise in the most personal battle yet.
Having starred in a whole host of comedies over the years Ben Falcone now steps up to the directorial plate for the hilarious Tammy! Tammy (Melissa McCarthy) is having a bad day. She’s totaled her clunker car, gotten fired from her thankless job at a greasy burger joint and, instead of finding comfort at home, finds her husband getting comfortable with the neighbour in her own house. It’s time to take her boom box and book it. The bad news is she’s broke and without wheels. The worse news is her grandma, Pearl (Susan Sarandon), is her only option-with a car, cash, and an itch to see Niagara Falls. Not exactly the escape Tammy had in mind. But on the road, with grandma riding shot gun, it may be just what Tammy needs.

t’s been nine years since the groundbreaking neo-noir Sin City was released, but for the characters in Frank Miller’s graphic novel series, life and death plots continue to hurtle on amidst the bullets and booze of Basin City. With a huge ensemble cast, Miller and co-director and writer Robert Rodriguez reacquaint us with familiar faces, while introducing us to more of the flavourful vigilantes, gangsters, and hapless lovers inside the city limits. In this instalment, Miller and Rodriguez serve up four stories; two series adaptations plus two new stories written for the screen. We’ll catch up with Nancy (Jessica Alba), still
dancing at Kadie’s Bar but hell bent on a quest to avenge her father, John Hartigan (Bruce Willis), by aiming to take down the corrupt and mighty Senator Roark (Powers Boothe). Also on the bill are interwoven tales including newcomer gambler Johnny (Joseph Gordon-Levitt); Dwight McCarthy (Josh Brolin) and his former lover, Ava Lord (Eva Green), who seeks his help against her violent billionaire husband; and Marv (Mickey Rourke), waking up amongst a slew of dead men, with no idea why. As always in this violent and visceral world, nothing is as it seems, and trust isn’t easily earned. The color processing that helped draw praise for the original is back again, with the starkness of black and white splashed with vivid hues to heighten the comic book quality the original film is known for. Get ready for another intense ride through this darkest city’s savage streets.

hree years ago, the nation’s favourite teens fled to Malia to escape constant humiliation at home and celebrate their final year of school together. To nobody’s surprise but theirs, the plucky quartet’s harebrained schemes only caused further embarrassment and their “best holiday ever” saw more of the awkward situations, excruciating experiences and failed sexual encounters that have plagued them for six years. As a conclusion to E4’s popular sitcom, their first feature length outing was also supposed to be their last, but the Inbetweeners are back for one last hurrah. Having recovered from their Mediterranean misadventures, the Rudge Park posse is reuniting for another summer holiday, this time
heading to the magical land of Oz. Enticed by the prospect of winning the heart of an attractive Sheila, these four courageous but bumbling Brits are sure to be longing for home after more hot weather hijinks. Iain Morris and Damon Beesley, the franchise masterminds, continue their writing partnership and replace long-standing director Ben Palmer to direct the sequel fans demanded, but that those involved originally declared improbable. James Buckley, Blake Harrison, Joe Thomas and Simon Bird reprise their roles to supply the beloved banter, childishness, and vulgarity of the popular TV series and screen adaptation. First time around, The Inbetweeners Movie earned a whopping £58 million and landed the most successful opening weekend for a comedy film in the UK. The creators intend to match that success with a sequel that promises to be even more entertaining and give The Inbetweeners a fitting final send off. July / August 2014 13

I
n a Marvel Cinematic Universe full of genetically enhanced super soldiers, green rage-monster-scientists and golden haired Gods of thunder, it is quite a statement to say that Guardians of the Galaxy is set to be the wackiest and most daring product so far. We know from the Chitauri invasion and peacekeeping activities of the Asgard that the MCU is a much bigger place than just our tiny planet; Guardians brings this wider galaxy front and centre for the first time. As is Marvel’s way, some seeds of this story have already been sewn, namely, the Infinity Stones, cosmic artefacts with the power to change the very fabric of our universe. Although not referred to explicitly, we have already seen two - the Tesseract of Captain America: The First Avenger, and the Aether of Thor: The Dark World. In Marvel canon, there are six Infinity Stones, and super-villain Thanos (seen
in The Avengers credits) has spent a thousand years trying to harness their power for his own purposes. It is these efforts that will unite our Guardians for the first time. After stealing one of the Stones, Peter Quill, aka ‘Star-Lord’ (albeit only in his own mind) becomes a hunted man, with the armies of Ronan the Accuser tearing across the galaxy to track him down. While incarcerated, his path crosses with a disparate band of powerful outcasts - Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Groot, and Rocket Racoon. Motivations might vary, but this group of misfits is united by a common threat. Some seek revenge, others just the chance to give their lives a greater purpose; against all odds, the Guardians are born. While Ronan may be the fledgling heroes’ most immediate threat, the dangers to our (anti) heroes are numerous. The Nova Corps, a secretive intergalactic police force, (featured in the trailers with John C. Reilly’s line up and that unforgettable ‘A-holes’ line) harbour a hidden agenda. Thanos’ adopted daughter and master bounty hunter, Nebula, (played by Doctor Who’s Karen Gillan, who shaved her head for the role) is tasked with returning the stone, whatever the cost. All the while, the secretive Collector (Benicio Del Torro, seen in all his white-haired glory in the Thor: TDW end credits sequence) works to undermine each faction. He already has one Stone, and nothing will stop him acquiring a second. The race has begun. For all of The Avengers’ bombast and high budget action, what most fans enjoyed was the spark of the ensemble - a dysfunctional team of miraculous individuals, trying to find a way to
work together. Based on what we’ve seen so far, Guardians takes this to a whole new level, adding a dose of offbeat irreverence for good measure. Whatever their quirks, Cap, Stark and Banner were all well intentioned at their core, while the Guardians are significantly rougher around the edges, with initial dubious intentions to boot. We can look forward to epic space battles and superhero fisticuffs - Guardians is set to have this in spades - but the real fun will be in watching them attempt to live up to their name without succumbing to a desire to kill each other. Co-written by Dan Abnett, one of the world’s leading contemporary science fiction writers, expect a truly breathtaking scale. In his Black Library novels (part of the Warhammer franchise), Abnett has written millions of men to their fiery deaths, and shown a flair for ‘against all odds’ saviours while crafting for 2000 AD (Judge Dredd), DC Comics and Doctor Who universes. Breaking away from their core of world famous superheroes, Marvel are taking a risk with this quirky outing, booting up a franchise of complete unknowns. Having shown so much ambition in the past, it seems unlikely that this splinter of the MCU was envisioned as a feature length one-shot. Here we have a team of superheroes, every bit as nuanced and powerful as their Avengers counterparts, but the stakes are even higher; galaxies depend on the efforts of these heroes, not just single worlds. And even though some of the Guardians will likely not survive until the final reel, the ramifications of their efforts will no doubt be felt by Stark and Co. come Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Dysfunctional GuarDians PeteR Quill aka staR-loRd (Chris Pratt) orphaned at a young age and trained at Nasa, Peter is a capable smuggler, pilot, and womaniser, prone to acts of recklessness.
dRax the destRoyeR (Dave Bautista) as strong as hulk and just as angry, drax seeks vengeance against Ronan the accuser for killing his wife and family.
gamoRa (Zoe salDana) a beautiful, green, and deadly assassin, gamora shares a complex backstory with future avengers super-villain, thanos. Referred to in the comics as ‘the most dangerous woman in the galaxy’.
gRoot (vin Diesel) a 7-foot tree-like being, nearly impossible to kill, with the ability to control nearby vegetation. imagine tolkien’s ents but with a shorter temper and limited vocabulary (“i am groot!”).

OR PERISH The Autobots and Decepticons have all but vanished from the face of the planet following the devastating events of Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Who will save us from our greatest threat ever… ourselves? This is not war; this is extinction. words Brody rossiter
release date 11 July / director Michael Bay / starring Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz, Jack Reynor / Genre Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi
T
he world has changed. The scars of a city ripped from its foundations are yet to heal. Mankind’s fears have turned to hate - soon there will be no turning back from the road to annihilation we have chosen. The cataclysmic invasion of Chicago at the hands of the maniacal Decepticons during the Transformers’ last intergalactic battle for supremacy resulted in mankind hunting down and destroying its former saviours, the Autobots. Four years after those irreversible events, fears of the alien species once again wreaking havoc throughout Earth’s cities has led a group of clandestine businessmen and scientists to push the boundaries of recently uncovered ancient technologies far beyond the realms of what they can control - inadvertently summoning our greatest threat, and placing Earth firmly in its robotic crosshairs. The fourth chapter in Michael Bay’s Transformers series ushers in many changes to the director’s big screen adaptation of the beloved franchise. His cinematic treatment of the warring factions of Autobots and Decepticons, who began their lives in action-figure form before going on to reign supreme over several mediums of entertainment - including cartoons, comic-books and video games - has grown more bombastic and exhilarating by the instalment. Early impressions pitch Age of Extinction as the Transformers’ most over-the-top outing yet, taking bot on bot combat to unparalleled levels, as Bay and executive producer Steven Spielberg unleash their trademark bag of visual tricks upon cinemagoers this summer. Picking up the reigns that Shia LaBeouf dropped in the controversy-packed wake
of Dark of the Moon, veteran and muscle-bound action hero Mark Wahlberg has stepped into the heavy-metal fore as leading man Cade Yeager. A struggling mechanic and strapped inventor, Cade sinks his last few dollars into a beat up big rig from the scrap yard, hoping a makeover will yield some financial relief. Once he begins tinkering under its hood, however, it’s clear that things with the gas guzzler may not be all that they seem. When an entourage of shady mercenaries storm Cade’s Texan ranch in menacing cavalcade of blacked-out SUVs and attack helicopters, the single father’s suspicions are most definitely confirmed. The forgotten leader of the Autobots, Optimus Prime, must take swift action to protect his newfound human counterpart, his family, and eventually, the very existence of mankind despite having had his faith in humanity ripped away in Bay’s last franchise entry. Does mankind once again stand together with
the Autobots or face extinction? After not only drastically weakening the ranks of the Autobots with humanity’s own misguided retaliations against alien life, but triggering the arrival of a mysterious and deadly new man-made enemy in the form of Galvatron - the newly crowned Decepticon overlord - the odds are stacked against us. Fortunately, the re-emergence of Optimus Prime also signals the reintroduction of some beloved hunks of mighty metal, including Bumblebee and Ratchet, not to mention a few tricks that Optimus has hidden up his heavily armoured sleeves. A new enemy calls for a new weapon, and what better collection of weapons than the Dinobots; a ferocious faction of Autobots with the ability to transform into dinosaurs… massive, incredibly powerful, metallic dinosaurs. Early images of the Dinobots’ leader and fan favourite, the fire-breathing Tyrannosaurus rex, Grimlock, have depicted him both clashing with Optimus Prime and racing into battle alongside his ancient ally - a welcome and unforgettable sight for both aficionados of the franchise and big-budget blockbuster lovers. Age of Extinctions’ road to the big screen has undoubtedly been a rocky one, and audiences’ opinions of Michael Bay vary widely, but since 1984, Transformers has grown to become one of science fiction’s most endearing creations, with its filmic outings only solidifying its worldwide popularity. Boasting bots of all different shapes, sizes, and levels of deadliness, $165 million dollars’ worth of expertly choreographed explosions, special effects, and action heavy set pieces, and a rejuvenated cast of Hollywood A-listers, Age of Extinction may well be the Transformers’ most impressive clash yet. Judgment day is upon us, and an unstoppable war will ravage the planet, but will mankind’s spirit to survive and a fragile alliance be enough to stop humanity and the Autobots from perishing? As this new age dawns, come discover who will reign supreme in the aftermath. July / August 2014 17
