RELEASE DATE 7 AUGUST / Director Boaz Yakin / Starring Robbie Amell, Lauren Graham, Thomas Haden / Genre Adventure, Family
In the mid-1980s, the streets of Compton, California, were some of the most dangerous in the country. When five young men translated their experiences growing up into brutally honest music that rebelled against authority, they gave an explosive voice to a silenced generation. Following the meteoric rise and fall of N.W.A., Straight Outta Compton tells the story of how these youngsters revolutionised music and pop culture forever the moment they told the world the truth about life in the hood and ignited a cultural war.
After U.S. Marine Kyle Wincott is killed in Afghanistan, Max, his highly trained service dog, is too traumatised to remain in service. Back in the U.S., Kyle’s family adopts the dog, but teenage brother Justin (Josh Wiggins) has problems of his own and doesn’t want the animal. However, Max may be Justin’s only chance to learn what really happened to his brother. With the help of a dog-savvy friend, Justin and Max begin to bond, and set out to unravel the mystery of Kyle’s death.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE From exposing the mole who framed him for murder to stopping a madman’s global nuclear war, if Mission: Impossible has proven anything, it’s that for Ethan Hunt, Impossible is nothing. WORDS LEE CURTIS
EPIC STUNTS
Each Mission Impossible film has its defining action moment, and while these could easily be accomplished with CGI and stunt doubles, Cruise carries out nearly all the jaw-dropping stunts himself, including... • Escaping a collapsing aquarium and 16-ton torrent of water • Dangling from a cliff-face • Laying beneath a jack-knifing lorry • Climbing the world’s tallest building And as every film seeks to outdo the last, Rogue Nation sees Cruise clinging to the outside of an airplane as it takes off and climbs to 5,000 feet.
MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - ROGUE NATION RELEASED 31 JULY / Director Christopher McQuarrie / Starring Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg / Genre Action, Adventure, Thriller
I
“
t’s not as if any mission is gonna be rougher than the last one, is it?” Benji Dunn’s desperate plea that concluded the previous film becomes somewhat ironic as Ethan Hunt and his Impossible Mission Force (IMF) return to action, facing greater threats, bigger stunts, and louder explosions in what promises to be their most impossible mission yet. Tom Cruise is back as Ethan Hunt for a fifth instalment in the Mission: Impossible franchise. This time, with
the IMF still operating under the Ghost Protocol contingency, their leader must call in favours for one final but epic mission: to prove the existence of the Syndicate - a rogue organisation of terrorists as highly skilled as the IMF and dedicated to a new world order - and stop them at any cost. In addition to tackling this “antiIMF”, Hunt and his team must recruit lethal British agent Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), whose true loyalties are unknown. Other returning cast members include Simon Pegg, Jeremy Renner and Ving Rhames. Expect daring escapes (such as Cruise hanging off a plane midair), explosive action sequences, and Cruise’s own breathtaking stunts to keep the adrenaline flowing. July / August 2015 15

ake a group of young outsiders, all of whom possess different yet invaluable talents, and set them to work on unlocking the enigmas of inter-dimensional travel. Then cast those individuals into a devastating intergalactic void filled with untold mortal dangers. What happens when only four return home? Gifted (or perhaps cursed) with unimaginable powers, this group of scarred scientists and broken explorers find themselves reborn, their bodies and minds irreversibly altered and enhanced beyond all recognition. The group must confront and grapple with their new abilities; however, what they discovered on that planet threatens to haunt their new existence and doom the earth. Despite being Marvel Comics’ first team of superheroes - The Fantastic Four first graced newsstands with their genetically altered presences in 1961, two years prior to The Avengers’ unveiling - their previous cinematic exploits have been underwhelming. Uninspired casting and generic storytelling of the previous films flung the group into a z-list superhero limbo. Fans were left distraught over the mishandling of their heroes, while Hollywood studios were unwilling to risk light box-office takings and further negative reviews. However, as many comic book characters have previously proven - especially those with nipples on their batsuits - there’s always a way out of the Blu-ray bargain bin darkness and into the summer blockbuster light. Ironically, several relaunches of popular characters have highlighted the best way to achieve this is by telling a darker, grittier story that
focuses not just on awe-inspiring feats of mental and physical strength, but the depths of genuine human emotion. Fantastic Four looks sure to employ this formula while also mixing in a few unexpected ingredients. Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara, and Jamie Bell star as Reed Richards, Johnny Storm, Sue Storm, and Ben Grimm, respectively. Accomplished Brit actor Toby Kebbel steps into the egomaniacal boots of one of the Marvel Universe’s most despicable villains, Doctor Doom, promising a controversial shake-up of the character’s origins and agenda. The Machiavellian and often mystical Doctor Victor von Doom is no more; in his place is Victor Domashev, an anti-social hacker who leaves a trail of online destruction under the simple pseudonym Doom. However, after an alliance with his four former acquaintances comes to a shocking end, that devastation will reach far beyond lines of binary code and science lab walls. In spite of the secretive nature of 20th Century Fox’s reboot and the mysteries surrounding what the plot will truly entail, comic book lovers will be fully aware of the highly influential nature of The Fantastic Four throughout many major Marvel events. Interestingly, director Josh Trank (Chronicle) has cited that alongside offering up a much gloomier incarnation of the ensemble, elements of cult horror cinema have seeped into the film to heighten audiences’ understanding of the terrifying transformations many characters undergo after journeying to the notorious Negative Zone. Perhaps this exciting and hard-hitting new direction can finally situate Marvel’s most enduring group at the forefront of silver screen superhero action. A door to a fearful new world has been opened. Now, we must defend our own.

Devoid of life and filled with sporadic electrical storms and city-swallowing dunes, The Scorch is a dystopic region devastated by the catastrophic sun flares. But that isn’t even the half of it. It’s also toxic, as a deadly airborne virus kills anyone who breathes it. Worst of all, it slowly eats away at victims’ brains and turns them into insane, rage-filled cannibals. These Cranks rule the Scorch, and on top of all these new dangers, make the maze look like a walk in the park.
