PETER PAN (1924) Of the many interpretations of Peter Pan’s story, this was the first film adaptation. A silent movie, it was a big hit in its day. DISNEY’S PETER PAN (1953) Still enjoyed by adults and children alike, Disney’s animated version became a beloved classic that would go on to entertain many generations (and spawn Tinkerbell’s Disney Fairie friends). HOOK (1991) With Robin Williams playing an adult Peter Pan who must reclaim his youthful spirit and Dustin Hoffman playing the devious Captain Hook, this film is a must-see. PETER PAN (2003) This big-budget Hollywood production was a hit with critics and audiences alike, not only for its fantasy elements and uplifting message, but also for the burgeoning relationship between Peter and Wendy.

MONSTER MASH RELEASE DATE 16 OCTOBER / Director Genndy Tartakovsky / Starring Adam Sandler, Selena Gomez, Steve Buscemi / Genre Animation, Comedy, Family
W
elcome back to Hotel Transylvania! You’ll love what they’ve done with the place - unless you’re a crotchety, centuries-old vampire, because the eponymous monster resort’s doors are now open to humans, too. That isn’t the only change around here. In the time since Genndy Tartakovsky’s zany 3D original, Count Dracula is now a grandfather after his newlywed daughter Mavis and human son-in-law Jonathan became parents. Drac has taken his half-vampire/
half-human grandson under his wing and is understandably heartbroken when Mavis plans to leave. To convince her that her son is a supernatural creature and belongs in the hotel, Drac and his motley crew: Frankenstein, Wayne the Werewolf, Griffin the Invisible Man, and Murray the Mummy - put the innocent one-year-old through a series of dangerous tests. Despite their efforts, and his rich heritage, the adorable little scamp shows few signs of becoming a vamp. As a last resort, Drac invites his own menacing father to draw out the child’s inner monster - except the oldfashioned vampire is more concerned with his son’s lack of tradition. With his father now interfering, Drac and his guests could be in for some hotel havoc.
HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 2
THE DRACULA FAMILY MAVIS DRACULA
They’re creepy, kooky, mysterious, spooky, and altogether ooky, but they’re not The Addams Family. They’re the Draculas; the oddball family at the centre of this batty tale.
COUNT DRACULA: The owner of Hotel Transylvania. He may be a vampire, but as the last film revealed he’s a big softie really and only wants what’s best for his family.
MAVIS DRACULA: Count’s adventurous daughter who loves the human world. With her father’s blessing she married Jonathan and the loved-up pair had a child soon after.
DENNIS: The infant vampire/human hybrid who inherited his father’s striking red hair, but worryingly for Drac, none of his mother’s vampiric qualities.
VLAD: Dracula’s terrifying father. The less you know about him, the better.

Guillermo del Toro’s all gothic romance, Crimson Peak, is the tale of a young author swept away by her new husband and the secrets that his mansion hides. WORDS AARON KENT
• Del Toro wrote the original script for Crimson Peak in 2006. • Del Toro was asked by Peter Jackson to direct The Hobbit trilogy, but due to production issues, dropped out, leaving Jackson to direct. • Charlie Hunnam quit the lead in 50 Shades of Grey as he felt unable to handle the stress of filming it so close to the finale of Sons of Anarchy. • British playwright Lucinda Coxon helped with uncredited script rewrites. • Benedict Cumberbatch and Emma Stone turned down Crimson Peak, allowing Tom Hiddleston and Mia Wasikowska to step in. • This will be del Toro’s second film without Guillermo Navarro as cinematographer since Chronos (1993), collaborating instead with Dan Laustsen, whom del Toro worked with on Mimic (1997).

Edith follows Sir Thomas to his mountaintop estate where, inevitably, baffling and nightmarish disturbances begin to occur. With a cast that includes Jessica Chastain and Sons of Anarchy’s Charlie Hunnam, the scares are as likely to come from the star-studded ensemble as they are from the inanimate, fifth cast member - the mansion. With del Toro’s extensive knowledge of fantasy and horror, an incredible cast, and a macabre and mysterious manor, Crimson Peak looks set to be - in the words of the director himself ‘a classic gothic romance’ as well as a contender for scariest film of 2015.

ountaineers Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary completed the first official ascent of Mount Everest in 1953. Half a century later, the uncompromising monolith has been repeatedly conquered by individuals from all walks of life. From postmen to stockbrokers, commercial climbing has allowed many to pay their way to Everest’s perilous peak, and what was once an unparalleled feat of mankind’s physical and mental resolve is now a routine guided tour. Nevertheless, despite losing its
increasingly thinning air of deadly mystique, Mount Everest still towers menacingly over the Tibetan landscape; one wrong move can turn a thrill-seeker’s holiday into a one-way trip. Everest documents the true story of the 1996 Mount Everest disaster, a notorious day in the mountain’s history that claimed the lives of several climbers. The attempts of two expeditions to reach the summit rapidly became a terrifying struggle to survive as a lethal blizzard shrouded them in peril. The depth of Everest’s cast is as impressive as its subject matter’s scale, as Jake Gyllenhaal, Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington and Josh Brolin join a climbing party packed with impressive actors to recall this tragic and astonishing tale of mankind versus mountain.
EVEREST
18 March / April 2015
Mountaineers refer to any point above 26,000 ft (the summit of Everest is 29,000 ft) as “The Death Zone”. At this height not enough oxygen is present to sustain human life, and every moment the human body spends above this lethal threshold it is essentially dying. The fatal effects of The Death Zone have contributed to, or directly caused, the majority of high-altitude climbing deaths - whether it’s due to the failure of vital organs or down to poor decision making while under vast psychological stress. Extended exposure to this inhospitable altitude without a readily available supply of oxygen and medication results in bodily deterioration, loss of consciousness, and ultimately, you guessed it, death.

KRAY FACT FILE
In biopic Legend, Tom Hardy steps into the roles of both Ronnie and Reggie, identical twin gangsters in a brutal telling of the Kray family crime saga during 1950s and 60s London. WORDS CHRIS WASEY
THE KRAYS BOXING - Both twins were talented amateur boxers. It is thought neither lost a fight until briefly turning professional at the age of 19. They once fought each other, with Ronnie almost dying from a head injury. THE FIRM - Criminal records ended their boxing careers. So the Krays used crime to fund ‘legitimate’ enterprises such as nightclubs and property. NATIONAL SERVICE - Called for national service, Ronnie punched the recruiting corporal and escaped. They were arrested, becoming amongst the last prisoners held in the Tower of London. DEATH - Ronnie was certified insane and died of a heart attack at the age of 61, detained at Wrexham Park Hospital. Reggie died at home in 2000, released on compassionate grounds due to inoperable bladder cancer.

hey were psychopaths. They were brothers. They were legends. Ruling 1960s London with an iron fist, the Krays terrorised rivals and police officers with equal brutality. Their Firm’s activities extended to protection rackets, armed robberies, and hijackings. And the public loved them for it. In a much-heralded performance, Tom Hardy plays both of the alliterative identical twins. Based loosely on the book, The Profession of Violence: The Rise and Fall of the Kray Twins by John Pearson, the film charts the life that

eventually bought them to the epicentre of London’s gang culture - framed always by the brotherly relationship that would define them both. Last seen on the big screen with 1990s The Krays, starring the Kemp brothers (of Spandau Ballet fame), expect this to be an altogether much more brutal affair. Amid murderous turf wars, Reggie must struggle to control his increasingly psychopathic brother Ronnie, and cling to the empire they built together. With a $30 million dollar budget, expect a glorious recreation of swinging 60s London, and seamless CGI as Tom Hardy inhabits both sides of the Kray mystery. Like the Krays themselves, Legend won’t be pulling any punches.
