D

irector Alfonso GomezRejon (Me And Earl And The Dying Girl) transports us to late 19th century America, where iconic inventor Thomas Edison (Benedict Cumberbatch) attempts to dazzle Manhattan with his large scale, low voltage, direct current technology. He’s supported by his wife Mary Edison, played by Tuppence Middleton – reuniting the pair following 2014’s The Imitation Game - and pushed on his ethics by his forthright assistant (Tom Holland).

CURRENT WAR

However, it’s the mutton-chopped George Westinghouse (Michael Shannon) who feels he’s seen fatal flaws in Edison's plan. Backed by J.P. Morgan and his wife Marguerite, they bet everything on the riskier high voltage alternating current, so igniting the famous “War of the Currents.” The script from playwright Michael Mitnick will strike the delicate balance between scientific theory and human interest in a bid to fully light up our screens this summer. It’ll also trace the early journey of enigmatic electrical engineer Nikola Tesla (Nicholas Hoult) and his own part in the ensuing “war.” The action is as much about ego as it is ingenuity, and after being held back due to the Weinstein scandal, it’s only now that this long-delayed film will finally see the light.

AC DC Plug in and let battle commence...

AC

GEORGE WESTINGHOUSE As portrayed by Michael Shannon (8 Mile, Revolutionary Road), an American who’s struck it rich but stayed modest, driven by strong family values and a desire to help create a technology that would better serve the world.

AC

NIKOLA TESLA

Although not the film’s main player, Nicholas Hoult (recently starring in Tolkien) offers us a fascinating glimpse into the maverick Serbian/ American inventor and his involvement in AC technology.

DC

THOMAS EDISON Cumberbatch strives to showcase the visionary and pioneering inventor’s pricklier nature, thirst for fame, and unwillingness to cooperate for the greater good, framing AC as an executioner with its links with the electric chair in order to increase the voltage of resistance against his rivals.

THE KING HAS RETURNED Can the live-action remake of Disney’s The Lion King hold a torch to the 1994 original animated classic? Hakuna Matata. It means no worries. W

ithout a doubt the most highly anticipated of Disney’s live-action remakes, The Lion King is set to be the pick of the Pride. The story follows a young cub named Simba from infancy to adulthood, as he earns himself a group of rag-tag friends, a mortal enemy, and the kind of responsibility of which Peter Parker could only dream. Speaking of dreams, let’s talk about the cast. The ultra-talented Donald Glover

takes over the role of Simba, while the unmistakeable tones of James Earl Jones return as Mufasa. Add to that Chiwetel Ejiofor as the nefarious Scar, Seth Rogen, John Oliver, Beyoncé (yes, the Beyoncé), and Amy Sedaris, and the cast could well be the king of the jungle. You already know the story, especially if you’ve seen the childhood-defining original (or are familiar with Shakespeare’s Hamlet), and you’ll find no spoilers here. Breathing new life into the original is Disney’s very own superhero, Jon Favreau, who not only handled directorial duties on 2016’s The Jungle Book rejuvenation, but kicked off the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2008 with Iron Man. All in all, we just can’t wait to see the King.

Characters Then & Now SIMBA In 1994, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off main man Matthew Broderick voiced the fully-grown Simba, but has since passed that torch to Donald Glover, who was most recently seen sporting a spiffing selection of capes as Lando Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story.

ZAZU Comedy icon Rowan Atkinson added the role of Zazu to his already incredible CV for the original movie. Community star and political satirist John Oliver seems the perfect progression to play the uptight, agitated advisor to the King.

TIMON AND PUMBAA If you’ve ever sung “Hakuna Matata” at the top of your lungs, Ernie Sabella and Nathan Lane are no doubt the reason why. This time around, the honour befalls Seth Rogen and Parks And Recreation’s Billy Eichner.

uentin Tarantino returns to the silver screen with his ninth major motion picture, following 2015’s bloodthirsty western, The Hateful Eight. This time the auteur’s gaze is fixed upon the Golden Age of Hollywood, with a characteristically star-studded ensemble cast. We join fading TV star, Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his stuntman Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) as they seek to reclaim the spotlight of yesteryear by any means possible. With a trailer promising a slick,

seedy, and hyper-stylish tour of La La Land’s brightest stages and darkest passages, expect a typically Tarantinoesque approach to storytelling. The director has hinted at an interweaving series of plotlines, mirroring the narrative juggling of his iconic 1994 release, Pulp Fiction. Despite both its leads previously working with Tarantino, the picture marks the first time that DiCaprio and Pitt have shared the screen. They’re joined by a stellar lineup of A-listers including Margot Robbie, Al Pacino, James Marsden, Tim Roth, and Kurt Russell. With a jaw-dropping cast and one of the world’s most iconic locations and evocative eras to draw upon, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood has all the wonderfully bewildering and chaotic ingredients to become an instant classic.

Historical Icons It’s not only fictional characters starring in Tarantino’s ode to Hollywood’s chequered past. MARGOT ROBBIE - SHARON TATE The promising actress and model’s life was tragically cut short by the heinous actions of the Manson Family cult, a shocking chapter in Hollywood’s history that will no doubt be touched upon.

DAMIAN LEWIS - STEVE MCQUEEN Homeland’s Damian Lewis takes on the role of one of Hollywood's greatest and coolest leading men.

MIKE MOH - BRUCE LEE A man whose hands were registered as lethal weapons, Bruce has managed to punch and kick his way into another action-packed role.

DAKOTA FANNING SQUEAKY FROMME Fanning takes on one of the Manson Family’s most notorious faces, who had an alleged role in their murders and attempt to assassinate President Gerald Ford.

DRESS FOR THE OCCASION

British television royalty makes its long-awaited debut on the big screen, focusing on the continued exploits of the Crawley family. WORDS AARON POTTER RELEASE DATE 13 SEPTEMBER / Director Michael Engler / Starring Hugh Bonneville, Laura Carmichael, Maggie Smith / Genre Drama

F

ew historical period dramas gripped the world as much as ITV’s Downtown Abbey did during its original 2010-2015 run. That’s why it should come as no surprise to learn that now, almost five years later, the eponymous English country estate and its inhabitants are the subject of a feature-length movie which serves as a direct continuation. What has the Crawley family been up to since we last saw them? Picking up in autumn of 1927, the movie

sees a prestigious visit to Downton Abbey made by King George V and Queen Mary. Everything needs to be prim and proper before they arrive, as you can imagine, but the estate is finding it harder to function with half its operating budget being cut. As such, everyone’s favourite characters are forced to pull together to ensure the royal family’s visit goes off without a hitch. Julian Fellowes, the award-winning creator of the original show, is back to script Downton Abbey’s first silver screen outing. Hugh Bonneville’s Robert Crawley, Michelle Dockery’s Lady Talbot, and Maggie Smith’s Dowager Countess of Grantham also return, adding extra legitimacy to a celebrated TV show making the cinematic leap.

BRITISH TV GOES TO THE MOVIES MR BEAN’S HOLIDAY (2007) This wasn’t the first time Rowan Atkinson’s loveable buffoon went Hollywood, but it certainly felt the truest. His trip through France sees calamity always one step away as Bean disastrously tries to reunite a lost boy and his father.

THE INBETWEENERS MOVIE (2011) If you thought Will, Simon, Jay, and Neil couldn’t get into any more scrapes, their trip to Malia proves you wrong. From awkward breakdancing to skinny-dipping mishaps, this delivers gross-out hilarity on an international scale.

ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS: THE MOVIE (2016) Turns out knocking Kate Moss into the River Thames has its consequences, as the Ab Fab crew discovered when they were forced into hiding. Luckily the South of France isn’t all terrible, providing you can keep your head down.

Group, consisting of Scott Cinemas and WTW Cinemas, is pleased to be working with colleagues at Light Cinemas and Empire Cinemas, as part of a working group with Coca Cola, to discuss and implement best practice relating to Sustainability in the cinema industry. The working group has already begun to involve ecopackaging manufacturers to further meet our targets of reducing or removing single-use plastics from our cinema’s concessions bars. Over this summer, we’ll be rolling out new eco packaging for both soft drinks and cold drinks that use bio-resins instead of plastic coatings to keep the cups waterproof. Dubbed the “Earth Cup”, this will be a first for the UK cinema industry. We’re also looking to launch a reusable coffee cup later in the year and are about to begin several key schemes to encourage customers to reduce plastic waste, by returning plastic bottles to us for recycling or reusing cups in cinemas.
