8 Chart-topping indie folk band Noah and the Whale wowed the audience when they last played in Cornwall back in 2009. Since then they have gone on to become one of the UK’s most popular acts. From the joyous burst of their debut, Peaceful, The World Lays Me Down, through to the lovelorn sobriety of The First Days of Spring, the continued maturation of Noah and the Whale now reaches a kind of fruition on Last Night on Earth. Don’t miss this Cornish date on their extensive UK tour.

The Big Picture Peter Delaunay looks at the revival of the Documentary film at the Cinema Asif Kapadia’s ‘Senna’ recently played The Plaza in Truro and the early Monday evening performance attracted a reasonable house of both die-hard Formula 1 fans and motor racing initiates. Winner of the Audience Award in the Documentary section of this year’s Sundance Film Festival, ‘Senna’ earned fivestar reviews from both the popular critics and the film magazines. Its box office takings confirmed the revival of the cinema-release documentary that has been building since Kevin Macdonald’s 1999 Oscar winning ‘One Day in September’ about the hostage taking and massacre of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. The documentary genre has a noble tradition dating back to the birth of cinema at the turn of the last century. While George Melies’ instituted the dramatic fantasy science fiction genre with films such as ‘Voyage to the Moon’, his French compatriots the Lumieres Brothers were recording real life events such as their ‘Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat’. In the 1920s and 30s America developed the newsreel, especially Time Magazine’s March of Time, which Orson Welles adapted into ‘News on The March’ as a narrative device in Citizen Kane. Meanwhile in Revolutionary Russian, Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, recognised that “…for us, of all the arts, cinema is the most important” and Dziga Vertov instigated the KinoEye newsreel movement. With the rise of television in the 1950s the documentary tended to be confined to that medium, though a whole generation of drama filmmakers, particularly in Europe, began their careers as documentary filmmakers. In Britain, Lindsay Anderson and Tony Richardson made documentaries before
moving into features. Their ‘Free Cinema’ manifesto, often mistakenly described as either ‘left wing’; or ‘socialist’ was not arguing for a propaganda cinema, but for freedom of expression and viewpoint. As the manifesto stated: No film can be too personal. The image speaks. Sound amplifies and comments. Size is irrelevant. Perfection is not an aim. An attitude means a style. A style means an attitude. Until the late 1970s the dominant British dramatic genre was ‘social realism’, marked by its belief that the real stories of real people told in real locations produced a more truthful vision of Britain. It was social realism that in the late 1950s helped generate the original ideas and form of Tony Warren’s television drama series Florizel Street, better known today as Coronation Street. In the 1980s Britain’s directors tended to come from advertising and so Ridley Scott and Alan Parker evolved a new style that was glossier, less personal and more melodramatic; in fact, more in keeping with the Hollywood blockbuster style that Spielberg and Lucas developed in California. But real life does still go on around us here in Britain, and for anyone who has walked through Truro and wondered just who is that old man busking in Pydar Street, then let me recommend a documentary titled ‘88’, the Winner of Best Student Documentary at the 2011 Sheffield International Documentary Festival. Produced and directed by former Truro College media students, Josh Bamford and Hannah Bone, this is a little gem that speaks with the voice of Free Cinema and offers hope for a new British Cinema of the 21st Century.

30 MINUTes Or Less 8 The ‘post-modern action comedy’ is a comparatively recent cinema niche. Even with a vanguard of Zombieland and Pineapple Express, Hollywood has been a little slow on the uptake; we the viewing public enjoy an eclectic range of content in our 90 minutes. No, not the light smut and pun wizardry of ‘80s output, but something more adult - like eviscerated zombies and absurd, drug fuelled shoot-outs. Now the sub-genre brings together two of its leading stars. Danny McBride, a relative newcomer at the time of Pineapple Express (now long removed from Seth Rogen’s shadow) along with Jesse Eisenberg, whose stock has risen dramatically since his role in The Social Network. Although Cornish takeaways rarely offer the (perfectly reasonable) half hour delivery promise, most will understand the reference. Nick (Eisenberg), a wimpy pizza delivery boy is kidnapped by two aspiring criminals (McBride, Swardson) and forced – by way of bomb strapped to chest - to plan and implement a bank robbery in just a few hours. Enlisting the help of his ‘former best friend’, the pair must overcome police, assassins, flamethrowers and a thinly veiled mutual loathing to survive the task. Chris Wasey

8 Twilight star Taylor Lautner is less brooding heartthrob, more high-octane action hero in his first leading film role. Directed by John Singleton, whose credits include Four Brothers and 2 Fast 2 Furious, Abduction promises pulse-racing action adventure and star turns from the likes of Sigourney Weaver and Jason Isaacs. Nathan (Lautner) appears to be your typical teenager: life is about studying, playing for the soccer team and having a crush on one of the popular girls in school. But he can’t shake the feeling that he’s different. When said popular girl, Karen (Collins), discovers that Nathan is actually on a missing persons list after finding his baby photo on a website, he realises that his whole existence is a meticulously fabricated lie. With a team of trained killers hot on his heels, Nathan finds himself on a life or death mission to uncover the truth of his identity and solve the mystery of his elusive biological father. This fast-paced thriller is sure to satisfy action fans and Taylor Lautner devotees alike. Amy Evans

THE DARK SIDE OF THE DAWN As the release of Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1 looms on the horizon, Brody Rossiter explores our insatiable thirst for the all-conquering vampire saga
>> SEPTEMBER > OCTOBER
B
eneath the withering pines and perpetually grey skies of Washington State lies the town of Forks - the backdrop for a tale of unrequited love, which has captured the hearts and minds of a generation. Just as George Lucas’s Star Wars trilogy mesmerised the youth of the late 1970s and Peter Jackson brought
and, most importantly, romance - a recipe perfect for a big screen reimagining. After enduring a brutish tirade of the high-octane, bloodsoaked and heavy metal infused action vamps, The Twilight Saga has softened the focus, re-establishing those classical characteristics from which Bram Stoker’s vampiric blueprint Dracula was born. Despite this revision, the saga has retained its fangs, channelling
Mordor to the masses with his grandiose adaptation of The Lord of The Rings, The Twilight Saga has become a film franchise which resonates far beyond those shadowy multiplex walls and straight into the consciousness of teenagers around the world. The deeply romantic tale of vampire Edward and human Bella has become a cultural zeitgeist into which millions of followers have sunk their teeth. From smashing box office records to earning superstardom and mass adoration for on and off screen couple Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, the saga’s phenomenal success has rekindled audiences’ love affair with all things that go bump in the night. But what is it about The Twilight Saga that evokes such a strong and often emotional response from its many affectionately dubbed Twihards? Ultimately Twilight’s success has hinged upon the strength of the powerful prose from which it has been adapted. Stephenie Meyer’s bestselling series of novels found its voice in melodrama, fantasy
our immortal counterparts’ sense of animalistic ferociousness into highly emotional outlets of storytelling. Audiences have been rewarded with an evocative and
heartfelt experience rather than a superficial all guts no glory payoff. Twilight’s contemporary take on a centuries-old storytelling formula, teamed with our insatiable inquisitiveness regarding the nocturnal practices of vampires and werewolves, has proved a winning combination. The saga has rebranded, repackaged and - via venomous blood transfusion - reinvigorated the fantasy of forbidden love. If it wasn’t for the pasty complexions and superhuman strength, you could be forgiven for mistaking Edward and Bella for residents of 14th century Verona. Just as Romeo and Juliet transcended the repression of the warring Montagues and Capulets, Edward and Bella’s story has related a timeless message of the boundaries which love must often overcome to survive - allowing them to join the ranks of history’s most celebrated star-crossed lovers. Now the beginning of the end has arrived for The Twilight Saga as part one of final instalment Breaking Dawn arrives in cinemas this autumn. After surviving the attack of scorned vampire Victoria and Bella’s decision to choose Edward over brooding werewolf Jacob during Eclipse,

Breaking Dawn finds the couple’s bond stronger than ever as they prepare to marry. Following their nuptials, the newlyweds elope to the beautiful surroundings of Isle Esme where they finally submit to their passions and consummate their marriage. Bella soon realises she is carrying Edward’s child and its supernatural genetics are causing it to grow at a frighteningly rapid rate. Those familiar with Breaking Dawn’s plot will be fully aware of the cataclysmic actions which occur during and following the birth, sparking a dramatic chain of events which reintroduces ancient vampire enforcers, The Volturi. Ever since their arrival in New Moon, the deadly vampire elders have cast a heavy presence upon the saga, their influence not only shaping the narrative but leading it into its darkest moments - many of which audiences are yet to witness. Director William Condon is charged with the demanding task of steering the saga to its epic conclusion whilst incorporating a darker, more sophisticated edge to reflect the increasing maturity of Stephenie Meyer’s subject material. Fan speculation has been rampant in regards to the handling of key scenes such as Bella and Edward’s long awaited wedding and the highly consequential arrival of their crossbreed daughter, Renesmee. Though after beating off proposed names such as indie darling Sofia Coppola and teen angst extraordinaire Gus Van Sant for the directorial credit, it would seem Breaking Dawn’s beloved story rests in extremely capable hands. Comparisons with Harry Potter’s final two part blaze of glory have inevitably been made and undoubtedly the same heightened sense of emotion will be present as a global coven of fans wave goodbye to possibly this decade’s most hotly anticipated and treasured series of films. With the final stunning chapters of Bella and Edward’s gothic fairytale yet to be told, The Twilight Saga’s farewell outings look set to prove that the night really is darkest before the dawn. 8 Tintin is more than just a cult classic - it’s a worldwide sensation, embraced by millions and published in 80 languages. So with that in mind, Steven Spielberg is the only man worth having at the helm and, with Peter Jackson at his side producing, it’s a match made in filmmaking heaven. Moreover, the all-star screenwriting team of Edgar Wright, Joe Cornish and Steven Moffat has crafted what will surely be a sensational script based on three classic Tintin stories: The Crab with the Golden Claws, Red Rackham’s Treasure and The Secret of the Unicorn. The film stars Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot, King Kong) as Tintin, a young reporter whose relentless pursuit of a good story thrusts him into a world of high adventure and ominous danger. Together with four-legged companion Snowy, the gallant Tintin encounters fan favourite Captain Haddock (Serkis), leading to the discovery of a clue to the treasure of Haddock’s ancestor, Sir Francis Haddock (Craig). Filmed with stunning motion capture technology and with sequels already in the pipeline, Tintin will be the only film worth seeing this Christmas. James Wright

8 With Hollywood blockbusters Independence Day, Godzilla and The Day After Tomorrow amongst his directorial credits, Anonymous sees Roland Emmerich taking quite a diversion into the cloakand-dagger realms of Elizabethan England. William Shakespeare has long been shrouded in mystery, and various scholars over the centuries have questioned whether he actually wrote the plays credited to him and, if not, who the real author might have been. Anonymous delves right into the heart of this mystery and, against a backdrop of political turmoil as Queen Elizabeth I (Redgrave) faces the Essex Rebellion, serves up one possible answer - that Edward De Vere, Earl of Oxford (Ifans) was responsible for the authorship of the infamous works. Starring Rhys Ifans, Vanessa Redgrave and David Thewlis, stunning performances are a given, while the cinematography and themes of illicit romance and power-hungry drama are sure to draw viewers into this utterly enthralling period in English history. So was Shakespeare really a fraud? Perfect viewing for the skeptics, Anonymous is sure to reignite a centuries-old debate. Amy Evans

8 Mitch (Reynolds) is somewhat of a prince in the kingdom of bachelordom, spending his evenings entertaining a veritable smorgasbord of young ladies. Whilst Dave (Bateman) goes home every night to his beautiful wife, children and home yet despite this the best friends have serious cases of ‘life envy’. Luckily for them making drunken wishes to statuette deities, whilst relieving yourself into a magic fountain will always have serious consequences. After waking up in each other’s bodies the pair have the opportunity to lead the lives they always wanted, from family man to ladies man and vice versa. If you enjoy a pinch of the supernatural, wife swapping and have a deep rooted jealousy of your best friend then The Change Up may well be for you. Man of the moment Ryan Reynolds (Definitely Maybe, The Green Lantern) returns to his comedic roots offering the raunchy charisma which propelled him into the major leagues. Whilst Bateman (Juno) looks to lend a distinct air of credibility, propelling the frighteningly common anomaly of body swapping into a whole new dimension of hilarity. Just imagine Freaky Friday for people who actually enjoy films and laughter.

8 Be it a zombie virus, an incurable disease or wave of mass hysteria, the lowly outbreak has become something of a big screen stalwart in recent years, particularly in the case of many first-time filmmakers working on a tight budget. It’s a break from the norm therefore to see an established director like Steven Soderbergh - the man behind the likes of Traffic, Oceans Eleven and Che - weighing in with his take on an already burgeoning sub-genre. Focusing on the sudden outbreak of a lethal airborne virus capable of killing victims within days, Soderbergh’s film concerns itself with both the public response as society descends into chaos, and the reaction of the medical community as a cure is frantically sought in order to subvert the rapid spread of the contagion. But as panic begins to spread faster than the virus itself, it’s a race against time before order implodes and society begins to crumble. Boasting a sterling cast including the likes of Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow and Laurence Fishburne to name just a few, Contagion promises to be a gripping slice of thriller action. Up until then, life was perfect – good job, loving wife, great kids. Now Cal has to start over – except, having been with his wife since high school, dating seems like an alien concept. 8 If there’s one thing John Madden’s time-spanning thriller teaches us, it’s that Nazis are bad. Nothing new there then, but The Debt still has much darker themes than this old movie cliché running through it. Starting in 1965, it follows three Mossad agents with the mission of hunting down a notorious Nazi war criminal known as the Surgeon of Birkenau. They face problems and great dangers along the way but manage to complete their mission - or did they? 30 years later, a man claiming to be their old target surfaces in the Ukraine and the three agents must reunite in a very different world to find out what’s really going on. The Debt is based on the 2007 Israeli original, directed by Asaaf Bernstein, and stars Sam Worthington, Jessica Chastain and Marton Csokas as the young agents, and Ciaran Hinds, Helen Mirren and Tom Wilkinson as their older counterparts. Scripted by Matthew Vaughn, Jane Goldman and Peter Straughan, Madden’s film is set to have all the twists and turns necessary to make it one entertaining thriller, and is already being looked at as a possible Oscar contender.

Footloose
Director Craig Brewer Starring Kenny Wormald,
8 In an era packed with dance movies (Save The Last Dance, Step Up, Street Dance) and ‘80s remakes (Fame, Karate Kid, Fright Night), it was inevitable that Footloose would eventually be given the ol’ reboot treatment. Every new generation needs a new approach, right? For the uninitiated, here’s the basic plot: boy from the wrong side of the tracks rocks up in a Christian community where dancing and playing loud music has been banned - kids are just so impressionable, ya know? He doesn’t make the best of impressions, going against the rules, busting a few moves and falling for the Reverend’s daughter, of all people! Providing the film with a bit of leverage and Hollywood credentials is heavyweight Dennis Quaid (The Day After Tomorrow, Smart People) as Reverend Shaw Moore. He stars amongst a cast of virtual unknowns, with professional dancer Kenny Wormald in the leading role as Ren and Julianne Hough (who starred alongside Christina Aguilera in Burlesque) as the object of his affection. Expect plenty of rebels without a cause, high school dramas and a few shimmies. Good wholesome fun for all the family. Emma Farley

8 Jamie (Kunis) is a young female headhunter living in New York who’s tasked with trying to recruit Los Angeles based art director Dylan (Timberlake). Accepting the job, the pair’s friendly relationship soon turns into an inescapable attraction to one another. Throwing caution to the wind, Jamie and Dylan decide to enter into a no-strings-attached relationship with each other, thinking it would be easy to add sex into their already close-knit friendship. However, they soon discover that getting physical really does always lead to complications in a relationship. At first glance, Friends With Benefits might look every bit the copycat film of 2011’s sexually charged rom-com No Strings Attached, but with director Will Gluck (Easy A) at the helm, it promises to be all the more raunchy, racy and downright raucous than its disappointing counterpart. Filled with some fantastic cameos from Patricia Clarkson and a hilariously camp turn from Woody Harrelson, Friends With Benefits is a must-see - not only for lovers of girly rom-coms but audiences with a thirst for risky, R-rated comedies. FRIGHT NIGHT (3D) 8 Further proof, if ever it were needed, that remakes are still firmly on Hollywood’s list of top priorities, this modern update of Tom Holland’s popular 1985 horror comedy sees Anton Yelchin star as Charley Brewster, a teenager who learns that his new neighbour, Jerry Dandrige (Farrell), might be a vampire. Convinced that others should know the truth, he sets out to spread the word, but when Jerry finds out what he’s up to Charley is forced to enlist the help of magician and former TV vampire killer Peter Vincent (Tennant) to help him defeat Jerry before he kills again. It comes as something of a welcome alternative to that other vampire franchise, and whilst the remake fad may be maligned by many, director Craig Gillespie, who directed 2007’s excellent Lars and The Real Girl, has crafted an update that remains relatively faithful to its source material. Bolstered by a slew of entertaining performances and another entirely welcome eccentric turn from Doctor Who alumnus David Tennant, Fright Night looks set to provide a fine balance between biting humour and terrifying thrills. 8 I Don’t Know How She Does It is an upcoming comedy based on the bestselling novel by Allison Pearson. Combining topical subject matter, which will strike a chord with many a working mother, and an all-star cast including Sarah Jessica Parker, Pierce Brosnan and Greg Kinnear, the film looks set to be a storming success. The story follows Boston-based working mother, Kate Reddy (Parker), who is desperately trying to juggle marriage, children and a stressful job. After devoting her days to her job, her nights are spent at home with her adoring husband Richard (Kinnear) and their two young children. Life is a non-stop balancing act for Kate and her best friend, fellow working mother, Allison (Hendricks). Kate’s life gets even more chaotic when she is handed a major new account that requires frequent visits to New York and, to make matters more complicated still, Richard lands his dream job. As they both proceed to spread themselves thinner, Kate’s new business associate Jack (Brosnan) proves an unexpected source of temptation. How does she do it? You’ll have to watch the film to find out. Emma Louise Ingham

8 Chiselled, oozing roguish charm and supportive of a liberal agenda - you can’t fail to love George Clooney. This is a man who, in just 15 years, has graduated from supporting cast member in a hospital drama to action star, to quirky character actor, to indie styled director in his own right. His latest writes/stars/directs vehicle is based on the 2008 Broadway play, Farragut North, and follows a promising but naïve press secretary, Morris (Gosling). Having masterminded Governor Morris’s (Clooney) meteoric rise to presidential candidacy, a long buried scandal threatens to destroy both men. Clooney’s promise as a director was apparent back in 2002, with the darkly comic Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, and was cemented with Goodnight and Good Luck, an understated narrative around the US Communist witch-hunts. Yet, for all the swooning ladies and Academy accolades thus far, The Ides of March is set to be his most ambitious project to date. A highly charged political thriller with one of the most impressive ensemble casts Hollywood could muster, this is a welcome change of pace from the recent summer blockbusters. Chris Wasey

8 Jane Eyre, the 19th century novel by Charlotte Brontë, claims a prominent place in the English canon. The evocative story of a young woman’s turbulent relationship with an older man in possession of a terrible secret still grips the dark side of our imaginations. This atmospheric cinematic version, written by Moira Buffini, is set to thrill more than the average period drama - and the many adaptations of Jane Eyre that have come before it. Director Cary Fukunaga won best director award for Sin Nombre at Sundance Film Festival 2009, and his visual flair will undoubtedly come to the forefront in this classic gothic tale. Mia Wasikowska, of Alice in Wonderland fame, and Michael Fassbender, from Jonah Hex, provide the on-screen chemistry and the charming Judi Dench is perfectly cast as Mrs Fairfax. Early reports suggest that this brooding romance is a faithful and incredibly powerful take on a much-loved story. Joe Cole

JOHNNY ENGLISH REBORN 8 Very few people imagined that the studio behind the original Johnny English film would finance a second one. However, the 2003 film has become a cult favourite which polarises opinion and will certainly provoke either an ecstatic “Yay!” or “Oh God no”. You either love it or hate it - and, if it’s the former, you have a treat in store in Johnny English Reborn. The latest outing sees Rowan Atkinson’s titular moron going up against fierce assassins as he tries to ensure the safety of the Chinese premier, no doubt by using multiple modern gadgets which he has no idea how to implement and driving several Bond-like cars which crash and explode by all the wrong means. Atkinson is more internationally renowned for Mr. Bean and his timeless rubbery facial expressions and perfect comic timing will be exploited to the max in this comedy spy thriller. So whether you’re a fan or not of Mr. English, you have to admit that this film will be a sterling example of why we still love Atkinson as much as we did during the Blackadder years. Matt Brigden

8 If contemporary action cinema has taught us anything, it’s that you don’t mess with Jason Statham. Whether he’s finding ultra violent yet ingenious ways to transport things or kick-starting his heart via kicking someone’s head in, he’s bad news for bad guys. Evidently moustachioed gangster Spike (Owen) didn’t get the memo, deciding to not only place a bounty on SAS hard man Danny Bryce (Statham), but kidnap his beloved mentor (De Niro) to boot. Lured out of retirement by Spike’s big chunk of Hollywood A-list bait, Bryce embarks on a globe spanning rescue mission, dishing out brutal beatings from Paris to the Middle East. Despite Bryce’s proficiency in all things ass-kicking, his metal faces the ultimate test as he must confront a deadly trio of assassins - all in an effort to save his incarcerated tutor. The mighty wrath of Statham may be familiar to cinemagoers but the hard-hitting blows show no sign of softening. Killer Elite looks set to cement Statham’s credentials as a sweet-talking, stone-cold badass, promising cheap thrills, stylish kills and most importantly an absolute bucket load of outrageous set pieces. 8 If you’ve never heard of the Paranormal Activity phenomenon, where the hell have you been? Four years ago, Oren Pell wrote and directed a film in the vein of The Blair Witch Project: film shot on handheld camcorders from the point of view of the subject. Made on a miniscule budget, it raked in millions. Cue a sequel released three years later but under a different director. I say sequel - it was more of a prequel as most of it is played out before the beginning of the first film. Still with me? For this sequel is yet another prequel, taking place during the childhood of the central female characters of the first two films. Again, the director(s) are different. But all hope is not lost as the guys behind 2010 documentary hit Catfish are at the helm, giving the sequel a generous dose of credibility. What’s more, so much was made of the girls’ childhood in the second film that there were enough plot holes to warrant giving the characters more of a back-story.

8 Alexandre Dumas’s classic novel The Three Musketeers has been adapted numerous times over the years, but director Paul W.S. Anderson’s latest 3D take on the 17th century adventure looks set to be the most fast paced and action-packed interpretation yet. When the three famed Musketeers Aramis (Evans), Athos (Macfayden) and Porthos (Stevenson) steal airship designs from a high security vault, they don’t get to enjoy their success for long. Their partner in crime Milady (Jovovich) drugs the trio and sells the designs to an Englishman, Buckingham (Bloom). Three years later, the young, hot-headed D’Artagnan (Lerman) travels to Paris to find the famed Musketeers shadows of their former selves. When the villainous Cardinal Richelieu hatches a plot with Milady to seize control of the French throne and plunge Europe into war, D’Artagnan and the Musketeers are faced with the challenge of keeping peace in the country at all costs. Their mission includes the perilous task of recovering a diamond necklace from the Tower of London and delivering it to Queen Anne (Temple). 8 It’s been a while since Gary Oldman has carried a film as the central character, though arguably his vast talent carries most of the films he appears in, minor role or otherwise. Coming off the box office successes of supporting roles in Harry Potter and Christopher Nolan’s Batman films, here he takes the reins as George Smiley, the Cold War spy of John le Carré’s 1974 novel. Driven out of semi-retirement by his own unswerving morals, Smiley - a sort of anti-Bond - has the task of unmasking a Soviet agent in the upper echelons of MI6. Smiley’s forced to untangle this conspiracy without the assistance of the Circus top men, as the double-agent undermining Britain’s counter-intelligence work against the Russians could be one of them. These former trusted colleagues of Smiley pull him deeper into the labyrinthine mystery, dragging shared histories and relationships under a spotlight of doubt and deceit. This atmospheric, intellectual thriller is the first English language film directed by Tomas Alfredson (Let The Right One In), who’s certain to hone in on the paranoid tension brought to life by Oldman and an all-star cast. 8 Prior to breaking the bat as Bane in Christopher Nolan’s hotly anticipated The Dark Knight Rises, Tom Hardy is poised to crack some skulls in the mixed martial arts drama Warrior. Hardy plays ex-marine Tommy; deeply troubled and dripping with testosterone, the fighter returns home to enlist his deadbeat father (Nolte) to train him for SPARTA – the biggest tournament and payday in MMA history. Meanwhile Tommy’s estranged brother and teacher Brendan (Edgerton) is forced back into the octagon by the threat of financial ruin. As they ground and pound their way from amateur brawlers to fully fledged prize fighters, the pair prepare for a violent and emotional reunion. Edgerton’s patriarchal performance in the stellar Animal Kingdom proved that hardboiled machismo originated in a Melbourne suburb, whilst Hardy continues to challenge Christian Bale in the shocking physical transformations department. With both actors touted as the next big thing, this is the perfect opportunity to witness them share the big screen. Capturing some of the sepia-tinged magic of The Fighter and the poignant depth of The Wrestler, Warrior looks to continue the trend of the thrillingly powerful sports drama. Brody Rossiter

8 Viewers seeking a rom-com fix this autumn should definitely add What’s Your Number? to their mustsee list. Director Mark Mylod, who’s honed his craft on various British television favourites, including Shameless, Ali G Indahouse and The Royle Family, takes the helm, while Anna Faris of Scary Movie fame and Chris Evans, who’s starred in action flicks Captain America and Fantastic Four, take the leading roles. Based on the book 20 Times A Lady by author Karyn Bosnak, What’s Your Number? tells the story of Ally Darling (Faris) who, after reading a magazine article, is prompted to reflect on her last 20 relationships and begins to wonder if any of her ex-boyfriends could, in fact, be her true love. Cue a quest for the best ex of her life, assisted by her neighbour Colin Shea (Evans), who offers to help Ally as long as she can keep his ex-girlfriends away from him. This unusual partnership serves as the foundation for what will no doubt be an uplifting and hilarious comedy, poised to provide sweet and fun-filled escapism for rom-com fans this September.
