Reader Feedback This month we had an interesting phone call from Timothy Gee, a customer who was assistant editor on Guy Hamilton’s Battle of Britain. He gave us some information about the film’s score, which in last month’s issue we indicated was written by William Walton. The truth is that Walton’s score was rejected by United Artists and Ron Goodwin was brought in instead. This offended many, including Laurence Olivier. A slight compromise was reached with Walton’s four minute ‘Battle in the Air’ segment being used in the final film. Mr Gee has since campaigned and managed to add the full Walton score as an extra on the DVD. Any queries or feedback? Send us a letter to the usual address or email us at feedback@moviemail-online.co.uk

hen the witching hour approaches and talk turns to the greatest scary movies, some titles are unavoidable. One such is Night of the Demon. Adapted by frequent Hitchcock accomplice Charles Bennett from MR James’s short story, Casting the Runes, and directed by the great Jacques Tourneur (Cat People, I Walked with a Zombie), this British film is one of the triumphs of genre cinema. Our hero Dr John Holden (Dana Andrews) is in Britain to attend a conference on paranormal psychology and, while he’s here, debunk self-styled occultist Julian Karswell, who Holden maintains is a great big humbug. But Holden is not the first to want to discredit Karswell: those who try have an unfortunate habit of dying in bizarre accidents. Karswell claims to have hexed them and tells Holden he’s next. At first Holden ignores the threat – but he can’t deny that some very strange things are happening. Night of the Demon is a contemporary of the Hammer horrors but couldn’t be more different in approach or impact. There’s nothing remotely lurid here, with none of
A long unavailable British classic of atmospheric horror the camp excess that taints Hammer’s legacy. Tourneur plays things with complete sincerity, creating an atmosphere far more unnerving than facile shock tactics. Perhaps Tourneur’s most important decision was to cast Niall MacGinnis as Karswell. MacGinnis was a naturally warm actor and his bonhomie only makes Karswell all the more dangerous, equally capable of entertaining children and summoning up a demon from hell. The demon itself has long been a bone of contention; neither Bennett nor Tourneur wanted to show it, maintaining that what the audience couldn’t see was scarier. But it’s one of the few movie monsters that’s genuinely threatening – a palpable menace pushing the film to its electrifying climax. Unavailable in its native land for far too long, Night of the Demon returns to take its rightful place in the horror pantheon. James Oliver

Recommended Director: Julio Médem Starring: Elena Anaya, Natasha Yarovenko Released: 18th October Spain | 2010 | OPTIM | 103 min | subt | Cert 18 | Item # 63479
Basque auteur Julio Medem blurred the boundaries between mainstream cinema and erotica with the frank Sex and Lucia. Room in Rome – a remake of Chilean movie En la cama – pares things down further, detailing the charged, candid encounter between two women – Spanish Alba, Russian Natasha – sharing a onenight fling in Alba’s hotel room. More than soft-core titillation, the film plays like Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise stripped (literally) to its essence, as the women share stories and reveal their feelings. For the engaged Natasha, it’s a last chance to play; the more emotional Alba simply wants to experience a moment of perfect intimacy. Sex punctuates proceedings as markers of changing mood, and the actresses respond to Medem’s experiment with naturalism in every sense. Like Rear Window, Medem’s camera never leaves the hotel, but the clever use of Alba’s laptop and the room’s paintings are a constant reminder of the wider world. All the more reason, then, to savour the here and now, and as such Room in Rome is a welcome divertissement from cinema’s customary bustle. SK

lain Resnais’ latest opens with an extended shoe-shopping sequence that suggests the veteran French director has either been concealing a major foot fetish, or has become a late-life convert to Sex and the City: the first of multiple surprises here. Emerging from the chicest Marc Jacobs boutique en tout Paris, red-headed aviatrix Marguerite Muir (Sabine Azéma) has her bag snatched by a passing skateboarder. Rather than report the theft, she elects to let it go, inadvertently kick-starting the most haphazard plot of this, or any other, movie year. Marguerite’s purse ends up beneath the car of married oddball Georges Palet (André Dussolier), whose first response is to wonder what to do with this artefact. When the two characters cross paths, they find they can’t stop thinking about one another and matters aren’t helped by the fact their movements are being recounted by an entirely unreliable narrator, a modernist uncertainty principle of a kind in which the Resnais of yore revelled. Spun with all of the director’s usual dexterity, it’s a divertissement made up of a thousand tiny divertissements, dramatising a series of random events that keep changing the course of the lead charac-
A highly enjoyable and thoroughly surprising late film from Resnais ters’ fate, right through to a confounding (yet perfectly apt) finale. We simply never know what shape Wild Grass is going to take until it’s over: at times, it plays like an off-kilter romance; at others, particularly when Emmanuelle Devos’s dentist comes to the fore, we could be watching a Marathon Man-style psychothriller. This tonal variation would be as bewildering as anything in Last Year in Marienbad or Muriel if Resnais didn’t set such store in actors we’re wholly prepared to follow from scene to scene. Dussolier synthesises funny-ha-ha and funny-strange with exceptional skill, while Azéma’s Marguerite is a delightfully batty creation, determinedly guarding her independence from the chaos unfolding about her. So unpredictable is Wild Grass that it may be the first movie to take its cues from its heroine’s hairstyle, but there the film is in a nutshell: daring, amusing, and – beyond a certain stage – quite gloriously out of control. The Past is a Foreign Land Daniele Vicari
Elio Germano. A solid thriller set in the Italian south where a promising law student from a good family is driven by a cool cardsharper into a downward spiral of criminality, thus discovering a previously unknown evil in himself.
Miloš Forman’s second full-length feature was a major breakthrough both for him and for Czech cinema. A commercial blockbuster at home, it garnered Forman his first Oscar nomination a decade before he made One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Today, its still considerable charm derives from its low-key parochialism, as well as its historical fascination with the former Communist system which it gently mocks. It’s set in an industrial town where a factory manager, mindful of the fact that the female population outnumbers men by sixteen to one, requests that an army regiment be billeted there. Unfortunately, the strapping youngsters eagerly awaited by the girls turn out to be pudgy, balding and often married. But despite this, title character Andula finds love in the arms of musician Milda, and for a brief moment a wonderful future opens up before her ... only to be dashed when she meets Milda’s parents and learns a few home truths. It’s as much a political as a social satire, and Forman deftly slips some barbed comments about life under totalitarianism past a censor more exercised about the film’s brief flashes of nudity. MB

One of cinema’s legendary pairings – Richard Burton and Peter O’Toole – plays out the story of the tempestuous friendship between King Henry II and his troublesome priest, Thomas à Becket.
Ophul’s breathtaking mastery was never more in evidence than in this tale of the legendary courtesan (Martine Carol) whose life is told as a circus show under Peter Ustinov’s domineering ringmaster.
This adaptation, by turns idyllic and nightmarish, of William Golding’s novel about stranded schoolboys turning savage still retains the power to shock. Given an ‘X’ cert on its 1963 release.

Carlos the Jackal Contains: Full TV Series and shortened movie Released: 1st November DVD Extras: 3 discs. France | 2010 | OPTIM | subt | Cert 12 | Item # 63462
Director Olivier Assayas gives the career of notorious 1970s terrorist ‘Carlos the Jackal’ the widescreen treatment with stunning results. Similar in ambition to other longer biographies like Mesrine, Carlos paints a complex and unflattering portrait of a lethal historical curiosity. The series, which is also available in an shorter version edited for cinemas, is a fictional account in three parts. The first covers Carlos’s activities in Europe in the early 1970s in support of the Pro-Palestinian struggle. The second, and the strongest part, grippingly depicts the 1975 attack on an OPEC meeting in Vienna which made Carlos’s name and where he first starts to renege on his revolutionary principles. Part three follows his declining fortunes through the collapse of communism to his capture by the French in 1994. Venezuelan actor Edgar Ramírez glistens with charisma as the lead whilst gradually revealing the flaws which led to his downfall. Revel in a bold beefy drama unafraid to switch languages and countries, or even to let up the pace. DDP

Morgiana Recommended Director: Juraj Herz Starring: Petr Cepek, Iva Janžurová Released: 11th October DVD Extras: Interview; Essays. Czech Republic | 1972 | 2RUN | 98 min | subt | Cert 15 | Item # 62622
If The Cremator strongly hinted that Slovak director Juraj Herz has a sensibility far closer to Ken Russell than Ken Loach, Morgiana confirms it beyond any possible doubt. A deliriously florid costume melodrama based on a story by Alexander Grin (Russia’s Edgar Allan Poe), it fuses Gainsborough-style wicked-lady shenanigans with a splendidly Gothic/Romantic sensibility. Iva Janžurová plays the dual role of yin-and-yang sisters Viktoria and Klára, the latter being poisoned by the former in such a slow and careful way as to avoid detection, though not without causing Klára to hallucinate wildly whenever she glimpses anything in orange. However, Viktoria has problems of her own, with her drug supplier threatening to expose her and the possibility that she might have to commit another murder or two to keep her evil plan on track. Virtuoso cinematographer Jaroslav Kucera was clearly encouraged to go berserk with extreme wide-angle lenses and bizarre colour effects, occasionally combining the two via repeated cuts to the viewpoint of Morgiana, Viktoria’s inscrutable Siamese cat. Released a decade after Ealing’s celebrated Dead of Night, this more obscure example of the British ‘chiller omnibus’ film presents three tales: In the Picture, a phantasmagorical yarn about a haunted painting; You Killed Elizabeth, concerning a friendship that goes murderously sour over a woman; and Lord Mountdrago, in which Orson Welles plays a pompous cabinet minister pursued in his dreams by a political rival. Welles got top billing, of course, and he’s brilliant, but there’s much more to appreciate here: Alan Badel, for example, a wiry, intense actor who appears in all three stories and makes one wonder why he isn’t better remembered. Then there’s the direction of the first segment by Wendy Toye (one of the very few British women directors at the time, who died earlier this year), which has enormous, expressionistic fun with camera tilts. And keep an eye out for Lord Mountdrago’s psychiatrist, played by André Morell, who shortly thereafter took the lead role in another classic British chiller – Quatermass and the Pit. NR

UK | 2010 | 4DVD | 240 min | Cert 18 | Item # 63473
This is England, writer/director Shane Meadows’ semi-autobiographical account of his 1980s childhood, endures as one of the most assured British films of the past decade. It’s to Meadows’ credit that his deeply felt small-screen follow-up, set three years on, rivals it for quality. Reuniting the original’s cast over four episodes, Meadows uses the increased scope and scale to create a genuine ensemble drama. The result is a nuanced vision of working class life under Thatcher, as frank and funny as Shameless but grounded in historical context and bitter experience. Beyond the rambunctious partying, the gang is locked into a downward spiral of decrepit council flats, dole queues and worse. If the highs are euphoric, the lows are devastating. The Scouting Book For Boys’ Tom Harper shares directing duties but we’re unmistakably in Meadows’ world. When he returns behind the camera for the later stages, the story burns with the scorching humanity that has become his hallmark. SK

oys of a certain age, who spent long hours playing Major Pat Reid’s ‘Escape from Colditz’ game, will be delighted by the overdue release of this exemplary series. They already knew Guy Hamilton’s The Colditz Story (1954) from afternoon screenings on sick days from school. But the 28 episodes transmitted by the BBC between 1972-74 brought German prisoner of war camp Oflag IV-C to life and enhanced its reputation as an escape-proof bastion. It’s now clear why this was such a superior programme, as the writers included such luminaries as Ian and Troy Kennedy Martin, NJ Crisp, John Kruse, John Brason and Bryan Forbes, who had played Jimmy Winslow in the British Lion feature. But, at the time, it was the first-rate ensemble that made the stories so compelling. Jack Hedley exuded dignified authority as the senior British officer, while Edward Hardwicke combined pluck with pragmatism as the head of the escape committee. David McCallum and Christopher Neame stood out among the supporting cast, which was periodically bolstered by such guest inmates as Robert Wagner, Dan O’Herlihy, Jeremy Kemp (who concocted an audacious scheme to fly a homemade glider off the castle roof) and Michael
The BBC’s exemplary 1970s wartime escape drama Bryant, who excelled as a wing commander who feigns madness in the hope of a compassionate release. However, the Germans were just as memorable, with Bernard Hepton recalling Erich von Stroheim’s gentlemanly Kommandant in Jean Renoir’s La Grande Illusion (1937), while Hans Meyer combined steel with honour as his loyal Hauptman. But no one left a deeper impression than Anthony Valentine. He was truly, terrifyingly malevolent as Major Horst Mohn, a former Luftwaffe ace who had served on Hitler’s personal staff, and his sadistic delight in confounding meticulously planned schemes brought an extra frisson to the already tense escape episodes. Co-produced by the BBC and Universal TV, the series boasted suitably cramped sets that reinforced the oppressive sense of enclosure. But the most impressive aspect was the avoidance of caricature that had undermined so many British POW pictures in the war’s immediate aftermath. David Parkinson

This feature-length spinoff from the classic TV series has long enjoyed a cult status, and its fans no longer have to put up with their faded old VHS copies. This is essentially a cuckoo-in-thenest story in which the cuckoo is blue, feline and thoroughly sociopathic. Dougal is indignant at the appearance of the snide, enigmatic Buxton, who soon becomes his rival for the affections of Florence, Ermintrude, Brian and co – but he harbours deeper suspicions about the furry interloper’s true intentions. There’s a touch of the sinister that the TV episodes never attempted: Buxton takes his orders from the Blue Voice (Fenella Fielding), a malign entity bent on taking over the world; and there’s a sequence involving tribal masks that, I’ll wager, could still spark more than a few childish nightmares. But how discomfited could anyone really be at Eric Thompson’s dry, knowing, world-weary narration? This spruced-up release includes the original French soundtrack, so you also get Pollux et le chat bleu (its French title, naturellement). NR

Beauty and the Beast was the first animated film nominated for the Best Picture Oscar (only Up has since earned the same honour); looking back on it nearly twenty years after its release it’s not hard to see why. Disney enjoyed a renaissance at the end of the 1980s, both in quality and commercial success, starting with The Little Mermaid, which gave the studio their best reviews in decades. Beauty and the Beast is even better, particularly from a technical standpoint – the crew used computer animation for the first time in the famous ballroom scene, where the couple’s waltz is transformed into a magical spectacle through the pioneering technology. The Oscar-winning music boasts some great numbers, and the film pays homage to Cocteau’s La Belle et la Bête (1946), adding a haunting poetry to the picture. Although suitable for young children, the scarier moments of the film hark back to Disney’s golden years, with sinister scenes worthy of Snow White and Pinocchio. A masterpiece. AD

Ben Chace and Sam Fleischner’s feature debut has a breezy, winning charm. Young Brooklynite musician Max (Sean Bones, engagingly gawky) splits up with his girlfriend days before their scheduled Jamaican cruise; with his friends busy, he elects to go it alone, making new acquaintances while sampling the onboard buffet. Upon arrival at the island, however, our boy’s lackadaisical approach to personal security results in matters taking a nightmarish turn; soon, there’s more adventure than anyone expected. Lumped in with the low-budget mumblecore movement, Wah Do Dem proves better looking than that would suggest, stretching to a Norah Jones cameo and bright island colours, and the filmmakers are even critical of their self-absorbed protagonist; The Harder They Come’s Carl Bradshaw enters at a crucial juncture as a mystic leading this errant knight back to the path of righteousness. Playing out to an ultra-hip soundtrack, it’s a bright-eyed, bushy-tailed celebration of lived experience, and unlike a lot of mumblecore, it actually goes somewhere. MM

While the French were giving out prizes for Possession (Isabelle Adjani won Best Actress at Cannes), the British were busy banning it (via the DPP’s ‘video nasty’ list). Such bipolar reactions illustrate just how much the film is open to interpretation. Ostensibly a horror story, it portrays a couple’s collapsing marriage with the ferocity of a splatter movie. Mark (Sam Neill, adventurously cast) suspects Anna (Adjani) is having an affair. He is proved right when he finds her having sex with a tentacled beast in a squalid apartment. What’s more, the union has produced an unholy offspring, growing in the corner. (You can kind of see where the DPP was coming from). Cannes likes to reward actresses going bonkers on screen, and Adjani’s howling, primal performance, complete with unannounced vomiting, doesn’t disappoint – she makes the girl from The Exorcist just look overtired. The Berlin Wall setting points sharply to a political subtext, but this is as much a visceral expression of the horror of divorce as it is a comment on the brutality of state oppression. Quite an eye opener. JU

A film about the 1977 trial of Roman Polanski, arrested on charges that he gave drugs to and had sex with a 13-year-old girl. Although he pleaded guilty to one charge, he fled to Europe before sentencing. This film examines that year, mixing archive footage with contemporary interviews, including one with the young girl herself.

Britain Can Take It
T
he Battle of Britain and the Blitz were, for the British at least, two of the episodes that define the Second World War. It’s no surprise, then, that their seventieth anniversary is being celebrated at some length, reminding us of that dark time when Britain stood alone. The films made in that period – indeed, those made in the first half of the war – make fascinating viewing today and not simply for their quality. The film industry took it upon itself to rally the home front with stirring exhortations. They were, in other words, making propaganda; watched today, they reveal the attitudes and temper of those times. According to the traditional rules of propaganda, however, wartime filmmakers failed miserably. Back in the Great War, Britain led the world in the black arts, happily painting the Boche as beastly subhumans, glorifying the Empire, boasting how Britannia’s dad was bigger than your dad etc. There was none of that second time out. Consider Humphrey Jennings, leading documentarian of those times. His idea of bellicosity was juxtaposing images of bombed-out streets with lines from Kipling (Words for Battle). Nor was he unique: almost to a man, the British documentary movement avoided crass triumphalism and sneering at the enemy. There was more license in fiction films, more contact with adversaries and a reminder of the danger Britain faced (Cottage To Let is a fine, underrated example of this). And yet, even here, British filmmakers changed the rules of engagement. Take 49th Parallel for instance. Charged with making a film to encourage America to abandon its isolationism, Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger came up with a story of a
I’m not sure there’s a more moving war film than Formby’s Let George Do It pack of Nazis rampaging through Canada. But in a move that’s still arresting today, they went to great lengths to distinguish between the Nazis and ordinary Germans. In recent years it has become fashionable to state the bleedin’ obvious, that real life was nothing like the films; once the bombs started to fall, the nation’s collective upper lip wasn’t as stiff as the myths suggest. But such revisionism misses the point: propaganda is about perception, not truth. It’s precisely because that they don’t paint their subjects as superhuman that makes them so special; they celebrate the familiar and the mundane. Britain might have had the largest Empire in the world (we’ll discuss hypocrisy some other time, thanks) but they focussed on ordinary men and women. It’s a dashed queer sort of propaganda that values humour, fair play and modesty over tub-thumping and nationalism. That Britain looked to
those qualities in its darkest hour offers a valuable insight into national character and lessons we can learn from today. I’m not sure there’s a more moving war film than Let George Do It, in which George Formby foils a spy ring in Norway. Seriously. The Nazis were sweeping through Europe. Many wise heads reckoned the war was lost. At a time when Britain was besieged, her citizens looked not to a strong man or zealot but to a buck-toothed half-wit. George wasn’t a professional – he wasn’t even very brave, but he wanted to do the right thing and was ready to give Adolf a blooming good kick up the posterior if the chance arose. I don’t think that there’s anything that makes me prouder to be British.
