GM’s prestige production of Dickens’ classic novel is a handsome, well-mounted adaptation that finds many of Hollywood’s finest character actors in rare form. If the claim in the tagline that the film features a ‘star cast of 65 players’ is possibly pushing it, America’s biggest studio certainly wasn’t shy about showing off the sheer talent at its disposal. There’s Roland Young, delivering perhaps the definitive screen version of the ‘ever so ‘umble’ Uriah Heep, WC Fields inhabiting the topper of the loquacious Mr Micawber, and Edna May Oliver and Jessie Ralph playing the two very different older women looking out for the callow young Copperfield. Basil Rathbone is in there too, as just about the last word in refined sadists – his right eyebrow is surely deserving of a spin-off movie of its own – and there are bits for Elsa Lanchester, Arthur Treacher and Una O’Connor, as well as Lionel Barrymore, who makes as good a crusty old sea dog as you’d expect. The film’s hero, played by Freddie Bartholomew and later Frank Lawton, endures a typically Dickensian upbringing,

MGM’s star-filled, prestige production of Dickens’ classic novel saturated with hardship and tragedy, before finding his true place in the world, via the usual colourfully-drawn characters. There’s also romance, of course, which arrives in the shape of the ever-underrated Madge Evans, a memorable presence in films like The Nuisance and Hallelujah, I’m a Bum – prior to her early retirement from pictures in 1938 – who’s very appealing as the love interest, Agnes. Incorporating a financial scandal, an atmospherically-charged storm at sea and a handful of spirited comic interludes, David Copperfield is a lively, good-looking and fascinatingly cast affair, scored to a tee by studio regular Herbert Stothart. It’s also a glossy and intelligent companion piece to David Lean’s twin triumphs of the following decade, Great Expectations and Oliver Twist, which are far better known today, at least in Britain. Amour Michael Haneke

Breaking Bad (Complete)

This is filmmaking at the very highest level. Veteran actors Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva play the elderly couple in crisis after she suffers a stroke. The fragility of human existence and the full import of the wedding vow ‘till death do you part’ have rarely been explored with such unflinching directness. MB

There’s been talk of the dramatic potential for modern TV’s long-form narratives for some time, but Breaking Bad exploits it like no other. By focusing on a tight group of characters and the consequences of their actions, this expertly-written crime series builds a dramatic intensity over its 62 episodes that cinema rarely attains. DH

Before Midnight

Holy Motors

Richard Linklater

Leos Carax

They met in Before Sunrise; they were reunited in Before Sunset; now Jesse and Céline are married with children, and fighting for their share of happiness. The Hawke-DelpyLinklater combo here offers the most astonishing third act of the year, in which the idea of love itself is up for frank, funny, utterly engrossing discussion.MM

If the pleasure of heading off on a delirious cinematic journey appeals, Holy Motors is for you. Denis Lavant plays the shape-shifter who adopts various guises through the course of a day as he limo-glides the Parisian streets. What does it mean? Who knows. Leave all interpretation at the door and just enjoy the deviations of the ride. GH

Blancanieves

I Wish

Pablo Berger

Hirokazu Kore-eda

Ravishingly photographed and impeccably played, this silent, monochrome retelling of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, relocated to the world of bullfighting in 1920s Spain, is a magnificent piece of pure cinema which was described, accurately, by its director as ‘a love letter to European silent cinema’. DP

As Kore-eda showed in Nobody Knows, he is a master at drawing out captivating, naturalistic performances from children. I Wish, in which brothers separated by their parents’ break-up hatch a plan to bring them together, is no exception. It’s uplifting, unaffected cinema of the kind that Kore-Eda has made his own. GH

A Late Quartet

The Spirit of ‘45

Yaron Zilberman

Ken Loach

A moving and thoughtful ensemble drama exploring the effects on a string quartet when one of their members (Christopher Walken) is diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. A perfect actor’s showcase, it is also one of the finest films about the beauty and solace of a life immersed in music. CH

There were few more pressing films released this year than Loach’s rousing film essay. Bringing a welcome historical perspective to present concerns, it challenges us to reflect that if a fairer society could be created out of the ashes of global conflict in the 1940s, then surely we can think more boldly about our own times. Life of Pi

The Hunt

Ang Lee

Thomas Vinterberg

Ang Lee described it as the most expensive arthouse movie ever made, but don’t let that put you off. Life of Pi is a matchless feast for the eyes with breathtaking displays of visual artistry, but there’s depth here too as this visceral sea-faring adventure takes us on a journey into the human soul – hop on board. DH

This compelling account of a small town turning against a popular teacher (Mads Mikkelsen) accused of molesting a young girl plays like a counterpoint to Vinterberg’s own Festen. The Hunt’s carefully shot scenes are just as devastating, and reveal the hysteria beneath the surface of a quiet, ordered community. JU

Top of the Lake

Pablo Larraín

Campion / Davis

This visually distinctive, stirring tribute to those ad men who mounted the campaign that led Chileans to vote against General Pinochet stands as Pablo Larraín’s most considerable achievement to date. Gael García Bernal gives a typically sharp performance as the creative who used laughter and songs to bring down a dictator. MM

Twenty-three years after her last TV excursion, An Angel at My Table, Jane Campion returned to the medium for a superb detective series set in her native New Zealand. Ostensibly the story of a search for a missing 12 year-old girl, this was in fact a richly detailed character study of brutal men and battered women. AN

To Be or Not To Be is the darkest, most ambitious movie to which Ernst Lubitsch ever turned his touch. It has a catchphrase about concentration camps, a palpable sense of fear, and gallows one-liners – yet it never strays into bad taste, thanks to the deftness of Lubitsch’s handling, the strength of his righteous fury, and a pitch-perfect ensemble. Jack Benny is Tura, an actor in Warsaw who comes complete with a massive ego and an unfaithful wife (Carole Lombard), also a renowned star. Their quarrelling is interrupted by the Nazis, and the arrival in Warsaw of a double-agent who plans to smash the resistance. Cue the actors putting their skills to good use in the real world, with Benny posing as a Gestapo commander and the spy. Lubitsch was a magnificent director of actors and here he draws careerbest performances from just about everyone involved. With such a subject, the film’s stakes are high, and yet it frequently breaks off into absurdity, pokes gentle fun at actorly pretension, or knocks you sideways with a deadpan gag. RB

For all that Hammer Films were synonymous with looming castles and supernatural dread, their best work is to be found in their nonGothic films, of which Terror of the Tongs is an especially good example. Unavailable for many years, it’s one of the venerable studio’s most entertaining efforts. It’s set in Hong Kong in the early 20th century. Sturdy British sea captain Jackson Sale (Geoffrey Toone) dismisses tales of a criminal syndicate called the Red Dragon Tong until their wicked machinations affect him personally. He vows vengeance but since the Tong is headed by Christopher Lee at his silkiest, you can guess that this will prove tricky. We should, in the interests of sensitivity, note that many of the Chinese characters are played by Europeans. If you can get beyond that, though, this is tremendous fun, staffed by gloating villains who say things like, ‘you underestimate the Oriental mind, captain’ and decorated with white slavery, ‘exotic’ dancing and opium addled assassins. It’s perfect, in its own way. JO

This third feature from the director of A Separation takes its name from the Iranian festival. The final Wednesday of the year is marked with bonfires, fire jumping and fireworks, their warmth and energy serving as a means of purification and nourishment. In Farhadi’s film the celebrations provide both the backdrop and the dramatic counterpoint. Whilst fireworks constantly crackle and explode in the distance, emotional fireworks occupy the foreground. Much like his Oscar-winning A Separation, the focus is on a splintering relationship, and once again the dramatics play out in a grittily realistic fashion with some outstanding central performances. While the festivities build, so too does our understanding of an increasingly complex situation. Comparisons with A Separation are inevitable, and Fireworks Wednesday makes a fine account for itself. It perfectly captures the messiness of its characters’ lives, growing into a multi-layered work that is deftly handled by Farhadi without recourse to cliché or sentimentality. AN

Treasure Island

Item# 73130 USA | 2013 | MET-D | 96 | Cert 12

An adventure adapted from Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel. Kim Burfield plays young Jim Hawkins, who gets his hands on Billy Bones’ treasure map and joins a ship to take him to its destination, but word of the booty soon reaches Long John SIlver (Orson Welles).

Shane Carruth, the American polymath who wrote, directed and starred in 2004’s sci-fi triumph Primer, is a singular talent worth following. If his latest film is a more expansive mood piece, it is also every bit as likely to confound or confuse as it is to compel – almost every fibre of the film is left deliberately open to interpretation. It begins with a sketchy-looking fellow harvesting bugs in order to drug a young woman. This opening stretch is composed with such quiet, rapt precision that the bugs’ reappearance under the heroine’s skin occasions an authentic frisson of horror. If nature moves in mysterious ways, that’s as nothing compared to Carruth’s film, which proceeds to have the woman ‘rescued’ by a pig farmer-cum-sound engineer-cumtransplant surgeon – an action that spawns a series of micro-narratives, parasites feeding off the film’s main theme of troubled couples. The cinematography is some of the most delicate you’ll see all year. This is bell-jar moviemaking, and we look at it as though it were under a microscope, waiting for us to provide the missing link or meaning of life. MM
