Dir: Josef von Sternberg. ‘A sultry chanteuse, a hunk on the lam and a fortune in stolen gems.’ Robert Mitchum plays a penniless American on the run who pitches up in Macao, where he is mistaken for a cop by an underworld boss. Reader Feedback We had many answers to Mr Kefford’s film queries last month. The film about a couple searching for their cat in Paris is Cédric Klapisch’s While the Cat’s Away (Chacun cherche son chat), while the film about Stalin’s photographer is Andrei Konchalovsky’s The Inner Circle, which starred Tom Hulce as Stalin’s projectionist. Sadly, neither are currently available on DVD, but thanks to Anthony Nield and many others for your responses. Mr McKeran added that Klapisch is just one of many French directors he would like to see picked up by a UK distributor, not least his Riens du tout and Un air de famille. And a big boxset of Georges Lautner titles would be very welcome! Any questions? Email feedback@moviemail-online.co.uk or send a postcard.

ith Shame, artist Steve McQueen has made one of the most talked about British films of recent years. It has become a cliché to label a film ‘daring’ for tackling a contentious theme, no matter how the subject matter is actually approached in the narrative, but Shame deserves the epithet. The first major feature to deal with sex addiction and its consequences, it is a film that could have been pretentious and laughable. Instead it is one of the most intense, moving and – yes – daring films of modern British cinema. Before its release, Michael Fassbender’s much ballyhooed nude scenes absorbed most of the press, until people actually saw the film and witnessed an astonishing, compelling character study of obsession and addiction. Completely different in conception and tone from Hunger, his raw depiction of Bobby Sands’ final days, McQueen focuses on Brandon, a goodlooking and successful man living in New York, who struggles with the constant need for sexual release. When his troubled sister (Carey Mulligan), comes to stay with him, it sparks off a further decline with life-
One of the most daring, intense and moving of recent British films changing results. When Fassbender was not nominated for an Oscar there was outrage among film critics, yet Shame is the kind of film that wins glowing reviews rather than mainstream awards. It’s a naked performance in more than one sense, and Fassbender gives a sympathetic, despairing portrayal of a man out of control. The film has some unforgettable set pieces: Fassbender’s painfully wellobserved date with a colleague; Mulligan’s incredible rendition of ‘New York, New York’; Fassbender’s wilfully self-destructive confrontation with a man in a bar. It’s a triumph for Abi Morgan (The Iron Lady), a screenwriter who appears to be ubiquitous at the moment – it’s arguably the highlight of her career so far. Ultimately, it’s great to see a film from Britain – a country that tends to play erotic compulsion for laughs – that takes sex seriously. Alex Davidson

As the 19th century bled into the 20th, ‘houses of tolerance’ were high-class bordellos where a well-todo gentleman might enjoy female company and good, clean fun. At least that’s how the punters saw it; as this outstanding film shows, life was far harder for the unfortunate souls who were engaged there. Set in one of Paris’s premier maisons, House of Tolerance shows the cost of ‘innocent fun’ – the women endure violence, infection and addiction; they sustain themselves with sisterly comradeship, but it’s not always enough. The film’s issues of exploitation remain regrettably topical. While the subject is grim, Bonello films it beautifully; it’s no exaggeration to say that this is one of the most ravishing films in recent years, with opulent design and stunning, crepuscular photography. Utterly languorous, it’s sometimes dreamlike, sometimes inscrutable. It’s seldom comfortable, but this is sensational filmmaking, immersive and enveloping. It’s the best film about Parisian prostitution since Belle du Jour. JO
There have been over 25 adaptations of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous Sherlock Holmes mystery. But the most curiously engaging was filmed in the USSR as part of the TV series The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson. This two-part take sticks reasonably closely to the text and the enduring fascination of the story about a family curse and the savage beast roaming the moors and marshes around Baskerville Hall remains. A vein of offbeat humour courses through the action and when not fondly lampooning British eccentricity, Maslennikov makes splendid use of the bleak landscape to reinforce the mood of entrapment that is intensified by creaking interiors that simultaneously suggest shabby grandeur and menace. Livanov ably captures Holmes’ brilliance and Solomin is an admirably dutiful Watson. This is a palpably atmospheric adaptation; few would object if more entries from this intriguing franchise found their way onto disc. DP

lassic Bergman brings together five of the Swedish director’s little-seen works. Three have never previously been released on disc in the UK, and two were only available as part of the mammoth 30 film set issued some years back. A tying up of loose ends perhaps, but this release offers more than just satisfaction to the Bergman collector. It may not represent his best known works, but it demonstrates that ‘minor Bergman’ is not a derogatory term. The earliest inclusions, both new to DVD, were the director’s second and third features. It Rains on Our Love (1946) concerns a pair of social misfits – a pregnant teenage runaway and a young man fresh out of prison – whose burgeoning romance must cope with adverse economic realities and their own pasts catching up with them. The spectre of the past is present in the visually striking A Ship Bound for India (1947) too. Here a sailor returns to his hometown after seven years away, sparking memories of his abusive father, put-upon mother and the mistress he too had feelings for. The three other titles all hail from the 1950s, by which point Bergman was well on his way to international recognition. Sawdust and Tinsel (1953) is the bleakest
An enticing collection of five little-seen films from Ingmar Bergman of the bunch, to the point where its box-office failure prompted his production company to ask for a comedy next. Instead he provided them with Dreams (1955), a tale of weak men, determined women and the failure of relationships. The style in this one is particularly striking, acting as an extension of its lead characters’ fragile psychological states. So Close to Life (1958), also new to disc, earned Bergman and his female cast members (Ingrid Thulin, Eva Dahlbeck, Bibi Andersson & Barbro Hiort af Ornäs) prizes at that year’s Cannes Film Festival and it’s easy to why. Confined to the claustrophobic environs of a maternity ward it relates the stories of three very different pregnant women, and consequently offers meaty roles for much of the director’s regular acting troupe. Classic Bergman is being issued in both DVD and Blu-ray formats, the latter a welcome sign that labels are continuing to be adventurous with their high definition releases. Anthony Nield

L’Atalante and the films of Jean Vigo Recommended
Contains: L’Atalante; À Propos de Nice; Taris; Zéro de Conduite. Released: 14th May Extras: 2 discs. Item # 67988 Fr | 1930-34 | AE | 160 min | subt | B&W | PG
Although Jean Vigo’s entire filmic output comes to just 160 minutes, there are few bodies of work which you can approach time and again with such unalloyed pleasurable expectation. There is the gleeful enjoyment of shape, shadow and everyday human oddity among holidaymakers that is À Propos de Nice, and the impressionistic, seditious chronicle of boarding-school misrule, Zéro de Conduite, but the centrepiece of the collection is his 1934 film, L’Atalante. The tale of a newly-wed couple’s makeshift honeymoon on his cramped, cat-ridden barge, where interrupted intimacy and an eccentric first mate (a reliably unbridled Michel Simon) trouble their days is filled with extraordinary, haunting beauty. Vigo died from TB at the age of 29, just a few weeks after L’Atalante’s unsuccessful release. Its entrancing images remain fresh, frank and surprising to this day. They are filled with curiosity and mischief, as if Vigo was seeing things for the first – and the last – time. Which he was. GH

An acutely observed Romanian drama, Tuesday, After Christmas is even more scalpel precise than Radu Muntean’s earlier Boogie (2007) in its dissection of the peculiarly selfish psychology of married family men. Paul and Adriana are successful middle-class professionals: he’s in financial services, she’s a lawyer, and their daughter wants for nothing. But Paul, conscious of his greying hair and visible paunch, is also having an affair with attractive blonde dental technician Raluca, fifteen years his junior. He’s been very happy with this situation (the film opens with an extended conversation between Paul and Raluca as they lie naked in a golden post-coital glow), but as a family Christmas approaches, he feels the need to make a definite decision about his future. To up the ante, Muntean also cast an actual married couple as Paul and Adriana and filmed their big emotional set-pieces in a series of long, riveting single takes (one lasting 11 minutes), giving them nowhere to escape as they deliver and process potentially life-changing news. When Fritz Lang came to America, he abandoned the fantastic excess that characterised his German work and embraced a greater realism. But if his subject changed, his obsession with the inequities of fate remained: the new world gods were no more forgiving than those he had left behind. Fresh out of jail, Eddie Taylor (Fonda) means to settle down with his gal Joan (Sidney) and go straight. But when Eddie is implicated in a violent robbery, he’s dragged back to the Big House and sentenced to The Chair. Eddie escapes and goes on the lam with Joan by his side; as the law closes in, they celebrate their doomed romance. Bathed in Germanic shadows, You Only Live Once shows Lang at an interesting stage in his career. He’d make other worthwhile films but this, his second American movie, was his last gig with truly ‘A’ list resources. It features some of his best work, notably the robbery and prison break sequences and represents one of his creative peaks – arguably his zenith. An essential masterpiece. JO

Marmaduke Ruggles (Laughton) is a gentleman’s gentleman, happy to serve as his forefathers served. So when his master trades his services in a poker game, he is dismayed. Worse still, his new employer is an American. However, relocating to the uncouth frontier town of Red Gap, Ruggles is surprised to find himself most warmly welcomed. More surprisingly still, he finds himself embracing life in the land of the free. Leo McCarey was one the great comedy directors and Ruggles... is one of his finest films, a satire both on European diffidence and the snobbishness of American would-be elites. Ultimately though, this is Laughton’s show: Scarborough’s favourite son rarely had the chance to play comedy, and makes the most of his opportunities, delivering a performance that is among his best. Astoundingly, Ruggles of Red Gap has never been available for domestic viewing in this country before. Now it’s finally here, it should be greeted with open arms. JO

A
year after its masterful take on Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Paramount revved up its efforts to capitalise on the contemporary Hollywood horror wave with this adaptation of HG Wells’ The Island of Dr. Moreau. It succeeded almost too well; the re-titled Island of Lost Souls both out-horrored Universal’s Frankestein and Dracula while giving MGM’s Freaks a run for its money. At least this was the view of the British Board of Film Censors, who banned Lost Souls for 25 years for being ‘too horrible’ and ‘against nature’. Indeed, this tale of a megalomaniac doctor with God-like pretensions indulging in gene-busting experiments on the mutant population of his isolated, South Seas island is, in its premise, as unsettling for modern audiences attuned to the possibilities of genetic modification as it was to those still reeling from Darwin’s theories at the turn of the 20th Century. Throw in a permeating air of sexual danger – as the twisted Dr. Moreau encourages his shipwrecked guest Parker (Richard Arlen) to ‘mate’ with the sensual but only half-human Panther Woman, Lota (who is, admittedly, more woman than panther in her pre-Hays code bikini) – and
Banned for 25 years, this out-horrors Frankestein and Dracula you can see why the BBFC examiners nearly choked on their tea and biscuits. The film is chiefly of interest now though for a barnstorming performance by a young Charles Laughton. As Moreau, he transcends the movie acting style of the period, staying just this side of chewing even this florid scenery with a sinister, grandiloquent, menacingly unctuous performance that is still pretty unnerving long after other horror turns of the period have become unintentionally funny. (Laughton reportedly based Dr. Moreau on his dentist; you can understand why he might have lived in fear of getting toothache.) As the ‘real monster’ in this riotous yarn, Laughton towers above the other actors like a monument to high camp, but an unrecognisable Bela Lugosi gives spirited support as the lycanthropic ‘Sayer of the Law’ and Kathleen Burke (who won a competition to take part) is alluring as the darkly feline Lota. An Oscar-winning musical comedy of romantic errors set in 1920s New York, where Barbra Streisand plays the society matchmaker hired to find the perfect partner for Walther Matthau’s millionaire. She concludes that she is exactly the woman he needs, but first has to get rid of the competition!
A timely DVD release that complements David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method, John Huston’s Freud is a deep-focus study of how the father of modern psychiatry developed his controversial techniques, following a radical apprenticeship that saw him treating hysteria with hypnotherapy. Avoiding the soapy asides that characterise many a modern biopic, the film goes straight for the intellectual jugular, as young Sigmund battles academic and societal resistance to uncover the sexual drive at the heart of the human psyche. The narrative intensity is embodied by a post-auto accident Montgomery Clift in the title role – his fractious, damaged beauty brings an extra layer of anxious passion to the proceedings – and Douglas Slocombe’s imposing black-andwhite cinematography creates a vivid sense of time and place that teems with visible and invisible tensions. Shot in Germany and Austria with a cast including Susannah York, Eric Portman and David McCallum, this is a fascinating, mostly forgotten entry in Huston’s long and often unruly career. Needless to say, the dream sequences are pretty lively too. JU

Tanker driver Yves Montand, at the height of his charm, tries to find a way out of the seedy Latin American outpost. Memorably described by Karel Reisz as ‘unselectively and impartially anti-everything’!
Michael Fassbender (also in McQueen’s Shame) stars in this powerfully unflinching artistic dramatisation of the last weeks in the life of IRA man Bobby Sands. A worthy winner of multiple awards.

John Cassavetes
This classic drama – a favourite of Ford himself – is based on the trial of Dr. Samuel Mudd, sentenced to a life of hard labour for aiding the assassin of President Lincoln. With a muscular performance by John Carradine as a sadistic prison guard, this is a tautly-scripted examination of Mudd’s struggle to overcome inhumane justice.
Cassavetes’ groundbreaking debut feature about the doomed relationship between a white man and a mixed-race woman gave birth to a radical new film language. The British taste for Scandinavian crime – both on screen and on the page – continues unabated, and this latest entry is one of the quirkiest and most intriguing, utilising familiar themes but giving them an idiosyncratic twist. A body is discovered on the Øresund bridge between Sweden and Denmark (two bodies, in fact – the torso and legs belong to different victims). An ill-matched female/male cop duo (one Swedish, one Danish) with equal jurisdiction are then obliged to work together on the case. They are wonderfully played by Sofia Helin and Kim Bodnia. Helin’s eccentric Saga Norén shows every sign of becoming as much of a cult figure as The Killing’s Sara Lund – though she takes the latter’s lack of interpersonal skills to extreme levels with her Asperger’s-derived inability to relate to other human beings; in this area, she makes The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’s Lisbeth Salander looked like an agony aunt. The slew of mystifying plot strands thrown up throughout the episodes will keep viewers comprehensively hooked. BF

The Comedy of Errors Recommended
Director: Philip Casson
Starring: Roger Rees, Michael Williams, Francesca Annis, Judi Dench, Mike Gwilym, Nikolas Grace, Richard Griffiths, Norman Tyrrell Released: 28th May Item # 67786 | UK | 1978 | NWORK | 130 min | Cert PG
Thankfully for theatre fans, Trevor Nunn’s legendary RSC song and dance version of Comedy of Errors was filmed by Granada Television in the 1970s. It has only been intermittently available since its television debut, but now timed perfectly for the start of the World Shakespeare Festival, it takes its DVD bow. Sporting a fabulous cast, it stars Judi Dench as the jealous noblewoman Luciana, who becomes embroiled in a series of comic misadventures when she mistakes (or chooses to believe) her husband’s long-lost twin brother to be her errant spouse. Playing the twin brothers are Roger Rees and Mike Gwilym, whose charm and duplicity respectively allow the audience to suspend their disbelief. With its surreal mix of 1930s costume and seventies Greek package holiday colour replacing classical Ephesus, Comedy dishes out a dazzling panoply of ribald comedy and show-stopping numbers from a company of Shakespearean actors at the top of their game. The Descendants
Alexander Payne’s latest follows very much in the footsteps of his last two films, About Schmidt and Sideways, with a perceptive tale of masculine crisis. George Clooney is a Hawaiian lawyer on the cusp of making the biggest decision of his life when his wife is seriously hurt in a boating accident. Struggling to deal with the trauma even as day-to-day family life goes on, Clooney discovers his wife was having an affair and was planning to leave him. What follows is a quiet domestic drama full of elegance, wisdom and subtle, nuanced performances. Clooney is as good as we have come to expect but Robert Forster (playing Clooney’s grumpy father-inlaw), Beau Bridges (looking more like brother Jeff’s Big Lebowski) and Matthew Lillard (as the adulterous land developer) all deliver great scenes. The Descendants unfolds like a Raymond Carver short story, full of moments of quiet heroism and ripe with that sense of life never quite turning out the way you expect. PW

Although this is Peter Greenaway’s most confrontational, sexually explicit and graphically violent film (parts of it make The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover look like CBeebies), none of this is gratuitous: even the most extreme material makes serious points about the commodification of religion and the human body and man’s infinite corruptibility, both individually and institutionally. Set in central France in 1659, it revolves around a performance of a traditional morality play about the cynical exploitation of a seemingly miraculous birth, first by the baby’s adult sister and then by the Church. Meanwhile, Greenaway deliberately blurs the distinction between performers and audience to the point when it becomes increasingly hard to tell whether what’s happening in front of us is faked or all too horribly real, before removing the division altogether for a climax as shocking now as it was two decades ago. It’s one of the most visually ravishing of all Greenaway’s films – the aestheticising of atrocity being, of course, one of the director’s key themes. MB

ilmed on location in Belgrade, Ralph Fiennes’s adaptation of one of Shakespeare’s most controversial plays retains the original text, but clarifies the story and updates the setting to a modern-day civil war. The tale of a general who triumphs on the battlefield only to find himself ill-equipped in the political arena, Coriolanus feels chillingly relevant in an era where swiftly-won wars have given way to division and unrest. Fiennes’ directorial debut captures the horror of urban warfare using hand-held camerawork intercut with news footage (featuring a terrific cameo from newsreader Jon Snow). This grey hell of dust and rubble proves to be the only environment in which Coriolanus feels totally at home. Shaven-headed, tattooed and clad in body armour, Fiennes cuts an unexpectedly powerful physical presence in the film’s numerous action sequences. Outside the fury of battle, the Roman general comes across as subdued and awkward; uncomfortable in the spotlight, distant even from his wife, Virgilia (an ethereally beautiful if underused Jessica Chastain), and totally in thrall to his mother, Volumnia (Vanessa Redgrave). It’s a subtle, self-contained take on one of
A chillingly relevant take on Shakespeare’s play from Fiennes Shakespeare’s most complex warriors. His opponent, Gerard Butler’s Tullus Aufidius, is everything Coriolanus is not: confident in his leadership on and off the battlefield, and a far more obviously heroic presence. Butler has played beefcakes before (and in fact, he’s also played Shakespeare before, in the ensemble of Steven Berkoff’s 1996 Coriolanus revival), and his naturalistic performance is an effective counterbalance to Fiennes’ quiet intensity. However, despite all this testosterone, it’s Vanessa Redgrave who dominates every scene. Her steely-eyed performance as Volumnia is astonishing, and the only conceivable reason that she wasn’t nominated Best Supporting Actress at the 2012 Oscars is because the Academy was scared of her (and rightly so). More than the mud, blood and explosions, her unflinching fanaticism captures the horror that lies at the heart of of civil war: a mother who would proudly send her son to die. Milo Wakelin

After his groundbreaking WWII movies and mini-series, Spielberg turns his attention to WWI with his adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s children’s novel, the inspiration for a hugely-popular National Theatre play, now on Broadway. It tells the story of Joey, a valiant farm horse that goes to war in France after being cruelly separated from his beloved trainer Albert. And it’s a far cry from their bucolic Dartmoor farm, which here becomes a West Country Monument Valley with craggy tors and lowering skies. Pushed and pulled around, Joey suffers under allied and enemy custodianship in equal measure and becomes a stoic witness to the calamities, cruelties and kindnesses of war. Meanwhile, Albert, now conscripted and scarred by his time in the trenches, never gives up the hope of finding his equine friend. Logistically and visually – especially Joey’s roles in a cavalry charge, hauling heavy guns and nail-biting entanglement in No Man’s Land – War Horse is both stirring and awe-inspiring. AB

Just the Facts
W
erner Herzog has done many crazy things (pulling a boat over a mountain for Fitzcarraldo for instance) but his latest stunt may be his craziest: he is playing the villain in the next Tom Cruise flick. Seriously. Then again, Herzog is an increasingly mainstream figure these days: from the YouTube videos that parody his mellifluous Bavarian tones to his appearance on The Simpsons, he is recognisable in a way that, say, Wim Wenders isn’t. He has enjoyed considerable success with Grizzly Man (which may be the ultimate wildlife film), Cave of Forgotten Dreams (about ‘primitive’ art and the birth of humanity) and, most recently, Into the Abyss and its partner Death Row, in which he investigates the death penalty. Placing himself in front of the camera, he’s an engaging, quizzical guide: little wonder he’s been adopted by the mainstream. Herzog has made documentaries for as long as he has been a filmmaker but they have hitherto taken a back seat to his feature work. The fact that has now changed indicates something wider, a shift in the way documentaries are perceived. It’s a commonplace to say that this is a golden age of documentary but it’s true. While the documentary has always been a vital part of cinema (Robert Flaherty, Chris Marker, Humphrey Jennings...), it has never had the mainstream prominence that it has to-day. In part, this is surely political. The world is a scary place right now; documentaries have proved adept at helping people navigate the turmoil. Michael Moore won the Palme d’Or for Fahrenheit 9/11 and arguably did a better job of articulating discontent than the official political opposition.
There is a hunger for engaging stories that isn’t being satisfied by the mainstream Charles Ferguson’s Inside Job is a masterful account of the causes and consequences of the recent financial apocalypse. But I think the rise of documentaries has a lot to do with the failings of more orthodox films. There is a hunger for engaging stories which isn’t being satisfied by the bloated blockbusters (or, to be fair, the sometimes rarified world of arthouse cinema). Many of the most enthralling films of recent years have been drawn from life: Spellbound and Être et Avoir are two of the most charming films of any stripe of the past decade. And I’m not ashamed to say that Young@Heart made me cry. The problem with documentaries is that they are not always what they seem. For all their apparent objectivity, the documentary represents the perspective of the person who shaped the material. ‘Truth’ can be determined by how footage is presented and edited: ‘non-fiction’ does not always mean ‘fact’.
The best documentarians recognise this, which brings us neatly to Errol Morris. He can do serious (The Thin Blue Line helped acquit an innocent man) and political (Standard Operating Procedure is the best documentary on the recent war and its aftermath in Iraq) but he can also do playful: his new film, Tabloid, is one of his finest, the funny and strangely touching true story of how a beauty queen kidnapped a Mormon missionary, then had her dog cloned. What does it all mean? Dunno. Morris establishes the facts and lets us draw our own conclusions. It’s a lesson some of his colleagues would do well to learn.
