Reader Feedback We had many answers to Mr Kefford’s film queries last month. The film about a couple searching for their cat in Paris is Cédric Klapisch’s While the Cat’s Away (Chacun cherche son chat), while the film about Stalin’s photographer is Andrei Konchalovsky’s The Inner Circle, which starred Tom Hulce as Stalin’s projectionist. Sadly, neither are currently available on DVD, but thanks to Anthony Nield and many others for your responses. Mr McKeran added that Klapisch is just one of many French directors he would like to see picked up by a UK distributor, not least his Riens du tout and Un air de famille. lassic Bergman brings together five of the Swedish director’s little-seen works. Three have never previously been released on disc in the UK, and two were only available as part of the mammoth 30 film set issued some years back. A tying up of loose ends perhaps, but this release offers more than just satisfaction to the Bergman collector. It may not represent his best known works, but it demonstrates that ‘minor Bergman’ is not a derogatory term. The earliest inclusions, both new to DVD, were the director’s second and third features. It Rains on Our Love (1946) concerns a pair of social misfits – a pregnant teenage runaway and a young man fresh out of prison – whose burgeoning romance must cope with adverse economic realities and their own pasts catching up with them. The spectre of the past is present in the visually striking A Ship Bound for India (1947) too. Here a sailor returns to his hometown after seven years away, sparking memories of his abusive father, put-upon mother and the mistress he too had feelings for. The three other titles all hail from the 1950s, by which point Bergman was well on his way to international recognition. Sawdust and Tinsel (1953) is the bleakest

An enticing collection of five little-seen films from Ingmar Bergman of the bunch, to the point where its box-office failure prompted his production company to ask for a comedy next. Instead he provided them with Dreams (1955), a tale of weak men, determined women and the failure of relationships. The style in this one is particularly striking, acting as an extension of its lead characters’ fragile psychological states. So Close to Life (1958), also new to disc, earned Bergman and his female cast members (Ingrid Thulin, Eva Dahlbeck, Bibi Andersson & Barbro Hiort af Ornäs) prizes at that year’s Cannes Film Festival and it’s easy to why. Confined to the claustrophobic environs of a maternity ward it relates the stories of three very different pregnant women, and consequently offers meaty roles for much of the director’s regular acting troupe. Classic Bergman is being issued in both DVD and Blu-ray formats, the latter a welcome sign that labels are continuing to be adventurous with their high definition releases. Anthony Nield

Although Jean Vigo’s entire filmic output comes to just 160 minutes, there are few bodies of work which you can approach time and again with such unalloyed pleasurable expectation. There is the gleeful enjoyment of shape, shadow and everyday human oddity among holidaymakers that is À Propos de Nice, and the impressionistic, seditious chronicle of boarding-school misrule, Zéro de Conduite, but the centrepiece of the collection is his 1934 film, L’Atalante. The tale of a newly-wed couple’s makeshift honeymoon on his cramped, cat-ridden barge, where interrupted intimacy and an eccentric first mate (a reliably unbridled Michel Simon) trouble their days is filled with extraordinary, haunting beauty. Vigo died from TB at the age of 29, just a few weeks after L’Atalante’s unsuccessful release. Its entrancing images remain fresh, frank and surprising to this day. They are filled with curiosity and mischief, as if Vigo was seeing things for the first – and the last – time. Which he was. GH

An acutely observed Romanian drama, Tuesday, After Christmas is even more scalpel precise than Radu Muntean’s earlier Boogie (2007) in its dissection of the peculiarly selfish psychology of married family men. Paul and Adriana are successful middle-class professionals: he’s in financial services, she’s a lawyer, and their daughter wants for nothing. But Paul, conscious of his greying hair and visible paunch, is also having an affair with attractive blonde dental technician Raluca, fifteen years his junior. He’s been very happy with this situation (the film opens with an extended conversation between Paul and Raluca as they lie naked in a golden post-coital glow), but as a family Christmas approaches, he feels the need to make a definite decision about his future. To up the ante, Muntean also cast an actual married couple as Paul and Adriana and filmed their big emotional set-pieces in a series of long, riveting single takes (one lasting 11 minutes), giving them nowhere to escape as they deliver and process potentially life-changing news. More surprisingly still, he finds himself embracing life in the land of the free. Leo McCarey was one the great comedy directors and Ruggles... is one of his finest films, a satire both on European diffidence and the snobbishness of American would-be elites. Ultimately though, this is Laughton’s show: Scarborough’s favourite son rarely had the chance to play comedy, and makes the most of his opportunities, delivering a performance that is among his best. Astoundingly, Ruggles of Red Gap has never been available for domestic viewing in this country before. Now it’s finally here, it should be greeted with open arms. JO

year after its masterful take on Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Paramount revved up its efforts to capitalise on the contemporary Hollywood horror wave with this adaptation of HG Wells’ The Island of Dr. Moreau. It succeeded almost too well; the re-titled Island of Lost Souls both out-horrored Universal’s Frankestein and Dracula while giving MGM’s Freaks a run for its money. At least this was the view of the British Board of Film Censors, who banned Lost Souls for 25 years for being ‘too horrible’ and ‘against nature’. Indeed, this tale of a megalomaniac doctor with God-like pretensions indulging in gene-busting experiments on the mutant population of his isolated, South Seas island is, in its premise, as unsettling for modern audiences attuned to the possibilities of genetic modification as it was to those still reeling from Darwin’s theories at the turn of the 20th Century. Throw in a permeating air of sexual danger – as the twisted Dr. Moreau encourages his shipwrecked guest Parker (Richard Arlen) to ‘mate’ with the sensual but only half-human Panther Woman, Lota (who is, admittedly, more woman than panther in her pre-Hays code bikini) – and

Banned for 25 years, this out-horrors Frankestein and Dracula you can see why the BBFC examiners nearly choked on their tea and biscuits. The film is chiefly of interest now though for a barnstorming performance by a young Charles Laughton. As Moreau, he transcends the movie acting style of the period, staying just this side of chewing even this florid scenery with a sinister, grandiloquent, menacingly unctuous performance that is still pretty unnerving long after other horror turns of the period have become unintentionally funny. (Laughton reportedly based Dr. Moreau on his dentist; you can understand why he might have lived in fear of getting toothache.) As the ‘real monster’ in this riotous yarn, Laughton towers above the other actors like a monument to high camp, but an unrecognisable Bela Lugosi gives spirited support as the lycanthropic ‘Sayer of the Law’ and Kathleen Burke (who won a competition to take part) is alluring as the darkly feline Lota. The narrative intensity is embodied by a post-auto accident Montgomery Clift in the title role – his fractious, damaged beauty brings an extra layer of anxious passion to the proceedings – and Douglas Slocombe’s imposing black-andwhite cinematography creates a vivid sense of time and place that teems with visible and invisible tensions. Shot in Germany and Austria with a cast including Susannah York, Eric Portman and David McCallum, this is a fascinating, mostly forgotten entry in Huston’s long and often unruly career. The British taste for Scandinavian crime – both on screen and on the page – continues unabated, and this latest entry is one of the quirkiest and most intriguing, utilising familiar themes but giving them an idiosyncratic twist. A body is discovered on the Øresund bridge between Sweden and Denmark (two bodies, in fact – the torso and legs belong to different victims). An ill-matched female/male cop duo (one Swedish, one Danish) with equal jurisdiction are then obliged to work together on the case. They are wonderfully played by Sofia Helin and Kim Bodnia. Helin’s eccentric Saga Norén shows every sign of becoming as much of a cult figure as The Killing’s Sara Lund – though she takes the latter’s lack of interpersonal skills to extreme levels with her Asperger’s-derived inability to relate to other human beings; in this area, she makes The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’s Lisbeth Salander looked like an agony aunt. The slew of mystifying plot strands thrown up throughout the episodes will keep viewers comprehensively hooked. BF

The Descendants

Alexander Payne’s latest follows very much in the footsteps of his last two films, About Schmidt and Sideways, with a perceptive tale of masculine crisis. George Clooney is a Hawaiian lawyer on the cusp of making the biggest decision of his life when his wife is seriously hurt in a boating accident. Struggling to deal with the trauma even as day-to-day family life goes on, Clooney discovers his wife was having an affair and was planning to leave him. What follows is a quiet domestic drama full of elegance, wisdom and subtle, nuanced performances. Clooney is as good as we have come to expect but Robert Forster (playing Clooney’s grumpy father-inlaw), Beau Bridges (looking more like brother Jeff’s Big Lebowski) and Matthew Lillard (as the adulterous land developer) all deliver great scenes. Set in central France in 1659, it revolves around a performance of a traditional morality play about the cynical exploitation of a seemingly miraculous birth, first by the baby’s adult sister and then by the Church. Meanwhile, Greenaway deliberately blurs the distinction between performers and audience to the point when it becomes increasingly hard to tell whether what’s happening in front of us is faked or all too horribly real, before removing the division altogether for a climax as shocking now as it was two decades ago. It’s one of the most visually ravishing of all Greenaway’s films – the aestheticising of atrocity being, of course, one of the director’s key themes. MB
