Welcome
PAGE 3
Once again, the Mower County Shopper is pleased to present the “Fun at the Fair” magazine. We hope you enjoy reading the feature stories highlighting the 4-H and FAA organizations, the Exhibits and Exhibitors, and all the fair activities. While visiting the fair, use this magazine as a guide to all the fun fair attractions. The complete Fair Schedule begins on Page 4 and goes through Page 12. Be sure to catch all the great entertainment in the Grand Stand, at Fair Square and in the Beer Garden. There’s something for all age groups. Also, plan to tour all the Mower County Historical Society Exhibits and the antique tractors and farm equipment in their Ag Building. When you take a few minutes to rest your feet and sample all the great fair food, go to Page 32 for the 2015 Mower County Free Fair Word Puzzle. There’s a nice prize if you get all the answers correct and enter the drawing. Bring your camera to the fair! Our annual Fair Photo Contest has great prizes and you can enter as many photos as you like. Capture all the fun and excitement of the fair. Get all the details on Page 24. We hope you enjoy the 2015 Mower County Free Fair. There’s something for everyone every day at the Mower County Free Fair. Mower County Shopper Staff 3405 West Oakland Ave, Austin, MN 507-437-7731

Gwen sebastian By way of introduction, Gwen Sebastian’s new album may seem a bit late. She is, after all, an artist with a couple studio projects already under her belt, possessed of a large and growing fan base earned through years of touring, and the subject of a high-profile turn on a hit national television show. Giving her latest offering the self-titled distinction may seem curious at first glance, but her writing, singing and approach to recording have converged for this project in a way that defines her as never before. Thus, Gwen Sebastian is the perfect representation of Gwen Sebastian. The 15-track collection serves as an appropriate welcome for those who’ve recently discovered one of The Voice’s most successful contestants, even as it reveals a more fully-formed vision for her longtime fans. Surprisingly, success on the show, touring with coach Blake Shelton, playing the Grand Ole Opry, being named one of Country Weekly’s “Most Beautiful” and opening this Summer for Miranda Lambert and Dierks Bentley on the Locked and Reloaded tour haven’t altered her course. If anything, they simply propelled her forward. “The Voice has definitely catapulted my career,” she explains. “It was very validating and everything that’s happened from that point on is just at a different level. The best thing may be the sense of freedom it’s given me as an artist.” Before television, the North Dakota native performed hundreds of shows as a solo artist after a childhood apprenticeship in her family’s band. She released independent projects, flirted with radio success and did the heavy lifting required of aspiring artists. Admittedly, the music business grind brought her to a career crossroads just prior to her audition for NBC. “No matter what I decided at that point, I know I’d still be singing,” she says. “But at any job, you always want a promotion. And that’s kind of how I look at all this. Now I’m working to climb the ladder a little more.”

B RAD BOICE
AS “ELVIS” STORY From Church Choir to High School Choir, from High School Band as a tuba player to eight years as the lead singer for the popular rock band "Gemini", Brads' life has always been filled with music. Brad Boice started his Elvis Tribute in 2005 almost by mistake. He was attending a Musical Impersonator Show with his wife JulAnn and friends. After watching the two "Elvis" Impersonators perform that night, one of his friends said "Brad, you can sing Elvis better than that!!", and left to talk to the band. Within moments, Brad was on stage singing "Can't Help Falling in Love". Since that night he has entertained thousands of people in many different venues around the Tri-states.

MARSHALL, MN Runnings, a family-owned retailer of general merchandise and strong supporter of youth organizations, announced the company is donating 14,428 5-gallon buckets to 4-H clubs across six states.
The buckets, dyed in signature 4-H green, will be given to youth preparing to participate in county fairs across Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Montana, New York and New Hampshire. The county fair season typically starts in June and runs through the end of August. Nutrena, Weaver Leather, Farnam and Vitalix are co-sponsoring the bucket program now in its second year. Last year, Runnings donated approximately 7,000 buckets.
“Runnings is a proud supporter of youth organizations like 4-H, said Dennis Reed, Runnings owner. “Growth and development of our young people is vital to our future. The more that we as community partners can positively support them, the better. 4-H actively involves more than 6 million youth across the country.

Piggy Blues
Although indulging in fair food is an annual tradition, eventually some fairgoers have had their fill of corn dogs and other by Dustin Petersen fried foods and want something different. After that, Piggy Blues Manager Josh Diaz says, “They’re ready to have some substance.” Ronald Meyer, Diaz’ father-in-law, opened Piggy Blues downtown in 2000. He and Diaz had both previously worked in the meat business—and worked together in the Hy-Vee meat department, where Meyer was the manager before deciding to open his own business. The restaurant quickly became known for its menu and for live blues music. They soon began running a concession stand, and over the past 14 years have become a staple at the Mower County Fair.
“It was a no-brainer,” Diaz says about deciding to come to the Mower County Fair. He says it gives him an opportunity to meet and talk with the restaurant’s customer base, and to connect with new customers—and happy customers is what he enjoys most about his business—but it isn’t the only thing. “There’s always good food around,” he said. “I like to eat.” Although there are no new menu items for this year’s fair, the Big Mo—a sandwich introduced last year with “hot sauce-spiked” shredded pork, homemade pickled jalapenos, and coleslaw—will return. Some items offered on Piggy Blues’ regular menu actually began as fair exclusives, such as Piggy Nachos—tortilla chips topped with shredded pork, nacho cheese, onion, jalapenos, pico de gallo, and sour cream; and the Pork Stuffed Tater—a baked potato stuffed with pork, nacho cheese sauce, butter, homemade pickled jalapenos, diced onion, and sour cream. The Pork Stuffed Tater is their biggest seller at the fair, and was added to their regular menu just this past year. “They work their way into being on the menu,” Diaz explained. “We use the fairs to test those items and see how well they will be received.”
Diaz will offer five sauces this year, four of which are Mild, Jackass, Honey Barbecue, and Hot. Although Mild is their staple sauce, Jackass won an award at the 2013 Treasure Island International
Barbecue Sauce Competition. “It’s got a little kick to it,” he says. Because sauce popularity varies according to location, the fifth variety will be determined at a later date.
Besides the Mower County Fair, Diaz said they have stands at the Freeborn and Steele County Fairs as well. Although Steele County has the largest overall attendance, Piggy Blues’ business is best at the Mower County Fair. Diaz attributes this success to being a local business, and says they have a good mix of customers there—locals, new customers, and families. Although at the fair Piggy Blues normally stays open until 10 or 11 p.m., they sometimes stay open as late as 1 or 2 a.m., depending on the fair crowd. Diaz said that popular events at the fair, such as the Demolition Derby, definitely affect sales, as does the weather. Also during the fair, their downtown location will remain open normal business hours. “We don’t lose any business at the restaurant during the fair,” Diaz said. “It’s not worth it to close it down.”

FUN AT THE FAIR 2015 • MOWER COUNTY SHOPPER
Submitted by Kristin Krell Mower County 4-H Program Coordinator Mower County 4-H is over 400 youth strong with over 90 screened adult volunteers. The Mower County Fair is the highlight for most Mower County 4-Her’s. It is their opportunity to showcase their projects that they have been working on for many months! The youth showcase their talents with many different projects such as livestock, non-livestock projects, youth leadership and personal growth. Not only is the fair a highlight for 4-Her’s and their families it’s a highlight for the fair goers to come and see their projects. Often times many fair goers only get an up close view of livestock at the county fair. They always get to see a wide variety of projects in one building (4-H Building) such as woodworking, clothing, photography, crafts and fine arts, flower gardening and so much more. Plus, there is also an opportunity to have a place to sit down, rest and grab some lunch at the 4-H Diner, then dessert at the famous 4-H Dairy Bar! One thing will be missing from the county fair this year: live poultry projects. In order to help eliminate the spread of the harmful Avian Flu, the Minnesota Board of Animal Health has banned all poultry exhibitions. Even though Minnesota 4-Her’s will not have the opportunity to show their live birds
PAGE 25
there is still going to be of plenty of opportunities for them to showcase their knowledge about poultry. Mower County 4-Her’s will be able to partake in a livestock interview, chicken barbeque contest, showmanship (with a stuffed chicken), poster contests, poultry demonstrations and poultry exhibits. Youth can participate in as many activities as they like. Even though the poultry barn will be much less noisy this year, still make your way down to the barn and see the poultry exhibits that the 4-Her’s have worked very hard on. The poultry project won’t stop at the county fair. Minnesota 4-H is allotting poultry trips to each county. That way a 4-H member in the poultry project can still have an opportunity to earn a trip to the Minnesota State Fair. Once 4-H members get their trip the state fair it will be a fun filled weekend learning about the poultry industry! Also, at the State fair the reigning Poultry Prince, Tyler Amick from Mower County, will be giving his crown to the 2015-2016 Poultry Prince. It is very important to Mower County 4-H and Minnesota 4-H that the poultry project isn’t affected by the Avian Flu. It is our hope that the youth have a poultry positive experience this year and next year that live birds will be back at the county fair!

Donkey Showing is A Family Affair
by Dustin Petersen
A county fair wouldn’t be the same without animal shows, and the Mower County Fair Mule and Donkey Show brings smiles to the faces of participants and spectators alike.
Among this year’s returning participants are April Ostermann of Faribault and her children, nineyear-old Garrett and five-year-old Ivy. With April’s help, Garrett has been showing for the past six years, and Ivy for the past two. The children show different donkeys every year, and became interested through their grandfather (April’s father), Gary Wagenaar of Austin. This year, they plan to enter five female donkeys, or jennies: babies Coco and Rhonda, and adults Ruby, Cinnamon, and Marcy. Although her father owns the donkeys, April and her children board, train, and show them.
“I trained this donkey named Cinnamon on lead rope,” Garrett claimed, while April clarified that both children trained her. Both Garrett and Ivy enjoy showing the donkeys: Ivy, petting them and showing them off; and Garrett, leading them - when the donkeys behave the way they are supposed to. “Sometimes you have to drag them [the donkeys] into the ring,” April said.
day of the show. Ivy says, “We clean them, put them on a halter with a lead rope, and [lead them] into the trailer.”

Much of the preparatory work actually comes in the months leading up to the fair. It involves practicing with a lead rope - at least a dozen times on a halter before showing them - and socializing with the donkeys so they become accustomed to people. Despite their reputation for being stubborn, April says that donkeys are actually very friendly, and don’t mind the crowds. “They definitely love the attention,” she adds. While they haven’t yet shown donkeys at other county fairs, they have brought them to the Horse Expo at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds, and for the past few years have participated in the afternoon parade at the Minnesota State Fair. When the donkeys are not at a show, they live a normal life. “They act pretty normal,” says Garrett. “They just walk around and eat.”
While for April’s family donkeys are gentle pets, they are actually very brave and defensive. Some people use them to protect other animals against wild dogs and coyotes. When a donkey is on heightened alert, its laid-back personality will instantly change, returning only when the threat is no longer present.
In the past, Garrett and Ivy have placed as high as first and second in various April also says that donkeys are low Garrett competition categories. maintenance as far as diet is concerned. at the Mower County Fair in 2015
Like always the FFA has a big presence at the Mower County Fair. Over 6 local chapters get involved in the week long activities. Chapters in the area who participate are: Southland, LeRoy- Ostrander, Hayfield, Grand Meadow, Stewartville , Austin, Spring-Valley and Blooming Prairie.
Tuesday the week’s events kick off with the general entry day where non livestock entries such as Ag. Mechanics and crops exhibits are entered and judged by noon. The day also brings the FFA sheep show in the early afternoon and the always popular children’s barnyard which is open every day of the fair. Each chapter is assigned a day to work in the barnyard and students from the local chapters bring in animals for this event.

FUN AT THE FAIR 2015 • MOWER COUNTY SHOPPER
Make Sure Your Carnival Trip Is Enjoyable & Safe Carnivals, county fairs and street festivals can make for fun family outings. The nice weather just beckons people outdoors, and weekend after weekend resourceful carnival goers can probably find a fair nearby. But revelers need to make sure their experiences are as safe as they are fun. The Outdoor Amusement Business Association estimates 500 million guests visit carnivals, fairs and festivals each year. More than half of them participate in mobile amusement rides, among other recreational pursuits. Such pursuits can not only be fun, but they also can be dangerous, especially for young children. As a result, parents taking their kids along to enjoy this wholesome fun should consider the following precautions: * Be prepared. Research the fair or carnival and know what to expect when you arrive. How big is it? What are the types of attractions and what vendors will be included? What is the parking situation? Are strollers allowed? Knowing what to expect can make the occasion a little less stressful. If your child is old enough to understand, explain what the fair entails and how it can be crowded and noisy. * Dress for the weather. It is important to wear sturdy, comfortable footwear. Many carnivals are set up in fields or empty parking lots. There will be a lot of walking, and you want to be sure you are comfortable. Check the weather before going and dress for the temperature. Wear hats to shield your faces from the sun and lather on plenty of sunblock for protection. Avoid wearing any dangling clothes and jewelry. Tie back long hair to reduce your risk of accidents on rides. * Identify security guards or a security kiosk upon entering. Let children know where safety personnel are stationed. Establish a meet-up point that is very conspicuous should anyone get separated from the group. This central location will be checked first and should be easily identifiable for young children. Instruct the child to stay there until you find him or her. * Put your mobile phone number in your child’s pocket. Put your name or “Mom/Dad” on a sheet of paper with a contact number and put it in your son or daughter’s pocket. Should he or she get lost, the child can approach a security guard and give that person your phone number. WATONNA Motor Company * Take a current photo of the kids. Use your Presents David Smith Jr. smartphone or camera to snap a picture of your children Human Cannonball when you arrive at the event. This way you will have a method of helping others identify them should they get lost. * Observe the rides in advance. Owatonna, MN • www.scff.org or 800-423-6466
