Gear Daddies
ear addies is an Americana/Rock band originally from Austin, MN. Members Martin Zellar (electric and acoustic guitar, harmonica and vocals), Nick Ciola (bass), Randy Broughten (electric and pedal steel guitar) and James “Billy” Dankert (drums and vocals), played their first shows together in 1984. Between 1986 and 1992, the band released three popular albums and became an important part of the Twin Cities music scene. Many of the fan’s favorite songs (“Stupid Boy”, “Color of Her Eyes”, “She’s Happy”, “Drank So Much” and many others) are credited to the exceptionally passionate writing skills possessed by Zellar, however Dankert has also contributed some of the compositions, including “Time Heals”, and “Blues Mary”. Their most notable mainstream success was when they played “Stupid Boy” on Late Night with David Letterman in 1991. Zellar had this to say of the experience: “I was so nervous, and it all happened so quickly. I couldn’t tell you what the hell happened. I got done, and I was walking back and said to Randy (Broughten), ‘Did I sing all the words? Did I do that?’ When I watched it that night in the hotel room I had no recollection of having lived it.” Arguably, Zellar’s “I Wanna Drive the Zamboni” is the band’s best-known song, having been featured in the movies D2: The Mighty Ducks and Mystery, Alaska, as well as on the television program Malcolm in the Middle. It’s also a staple at hockey games throughout North America and Europe. Gear Daddies have been mentioned as an influence on a number of bands that emerged in the Upper Midwest in the late 1980s through the 1990s, including: The Billy’s, Violet, Shoot Lucy, Dazy Head Mazy, Groundhouse and Six Mile Grove. Currently, in addition to their respective individual pursuits, the guys of Gear Daddies reunite several times a year to perform throughout the Midwest. You can follow the band on Twitter at @geardaddiesband, on Facebook or their website: www.geardaddies.com.

MotoKazie is a race promotion company - We do everything that it takes to produce a motorsports event: sell contracts/shows, acquire sponsors, build/maintain the tracks, promote the event, score the race, maintain a series, and provide an exciting show for the thrill-seeking racers and spectators. Motokazie was the vision of a 19 year old Pro racer from Minnesota - who was trying to create local racing venues for the Twin Cities. With no financial backing, borrowed equipment, an incredible amount of work, and an even more incredible amount of convincing, Motokazie put on its first races in 1997. From that tiny 3 race series in 1997, to over 50 events in 2014, Motokazie has grown into a complete Motorsports Promotions Company, producing: • AMA/District 23 Sanctioned Races at Mankato • Supercross Racing – Motokazie Supercross Championship Series • Indoor Motocross the Red Horse Ranch Arena, Fergus Falls, MN • Organized Practices at Jordan, Mankato • Race Schools • Other various special events (Endurance, ATV Challenge, FMX, Supermoto) • Private Track Building - motocrosstrackbuilders.com Motokazie has produced over 1,000 successful events to date and attributes the rapid growth to our aggressive marketing and expert production of all events. Motokazie strives to provide the best racing experience for both the riders and the spectators. We’ve spent a lot of hours and plenty of sweat and labor to produce what we think are some of the highest quality motorsports events in the Midwest. Our events offer racing classes for the little kids (starting at age 4) to the big kids (up to age 55). We have 16 classes in Supercross, starting at 50cc Oil (beginner) to Pro Big bikes. We also have 5 different classes for Quad racers in our Supercross series. Our Outdoor Motocross races provide 39 different bike classes; and separate PeeWee and Big Bike tracks. Want to start riding or racing? Check us out online for more details on the different events we promote, including class lists, race rules and schedules. www.motokazie.com LIKE US ON FACEBOOK/MOWER COUNTY SHOPPER

Watkins Stand is family a’fair’ By Sharry Watkins Dave and I purchased the concession stand in 1985, so this is our 31st year! Our kids Troy, Tami, Tina and Teri were 15, 13, 11 and 9 at the time. They are all now married and we have 6 grandchildren. We bought the stand from someone who was ready to get out of the business. We started selling the items they sold which included cheese curds, onion rings, corn dogs, hot dogs, foot longs, chili dogs and chicken sandwiches. Over time we realized we sold the most of 3 of the items and that is what we sell now. We started by using the recipe from the previous owners, but have tweaked it a bit over the years. It’s secret! Starting a business like this is difficult, since fairgoers tend to purchase what they’ve tried before and liked. So we handed out many samples and still do! Once they’ve tasted, they buy! And then they will come back the next year. Success depends on repeat customers, especially at a venue like the county fair. We truly appreciate their loyalty. As the years have gone by, we have gradually reduced the number of events we participate in. We have worked as many as 9 events in a summer, but now have reduced it to 3 or 4. Now that the kids have grown up, the grandkids are stepping in and helping a lot. Tara, Emma, Tori and Anders are 16, 15, 14 and 13. Nearly the same ages as their parents when we started! We also have Kyle (6) and Adam (4) waiting in the wings! Our brother-in-law Bryce and his daughter, Lydia, also help us a lot. This has very much been a family and friends venture and we have all learned a lot about life, working together and making others happy!

FUN AT THE FAIR 2016
Submitted by Kristin Krell Mower County 4-H Program Coordinator August 8-14th, more than 300 youth from Mower County will showcase the learning and achievements they have accomplished in 4-H at the Mower County Fair. 4-H at Minnesota county fairs are not just fun annual events. Every summer, tens of thousands of 4-H youth participate in county fairs to showcase the knowledge and skills they’ve gained throughout the year, and to continue their learning experiences. 4-H youth spend months working on projects designed to equip them with essential life skills such as problem solving, decision making, project management, communications and public speaking. 4-H’ers then share their accomplishments and educate the public about their subject at their local county fair. They also lead visitors on tours of the 4-H buildings and barns, and conduct workshops and hands-on demonstrations for the public. 4-H’ers who demonstrate the highest achievements are then selected to participate in 4-H at the Minnesota State Fair! County fairs not only make great memories, they help 4-H youth grow into successful adults. Yet, with over 400 youth in Mower County enrolled in 4-H and over 300 of them exhibiting at the county fair 4-H can be foreign to many youth and adults. Coming to your local county fair is a great opportunity to learn about 4-H. We love having visitors in the 4-H Building and answering questions. Below you can find commonly asked questions, we hope this helps non 4-Her’s get a better understanding of what is going on in the 4-H Building. What are 4-H projects? 4-H projects are challenging, but practical, planned courses of study with learning experiences centered on a specific subject. Hands-on, learn-by-doing involvement is the most important aspect of a project. Most projects have man-
24
uals or project books that assist the 4-H member in the completion of the project. These manuals are age appropriate and can be tailored to meet younger or older expectations. The project manual can be used by the family in learning fundamental skills and/or obtaining critical knowledge pertaining to the project. Projects vary in length to completion. Some 4-H projects produce a tangible product upon completion. Most projects can be entered in the county fair as exhibits. County fair exhibits must be completed within that program year since the previous fair. What does a 4-H project cost? It varies. Members are responsible for the cost of supplies for projects. Some projects might use supplies from around the house while others might invest hundreds of dollars in their project. The cost of the project should be realistic to the family situation. What is an exhibit? An exhibit is an object or display designed to show something that the members have accomplished. Ideally it motivates members to learn and to have fun in a 4-H project. An exhibit is not an end in itself nor does it measure all the learning that takes place in a project. Self-recognition and self-satisfaction for having completed a project

are important rewards. A ribbon is only one measure of success. What is involved in exhibiting a fair project? • Livestock Projects - When showing livestock, youth house their animal at the fair during fair week and are responsible for keeping their animal and area in the barn clean. Members work with other members of the club to keep their club’s area clean and presentable to the public. Each livestock area also has their own show that is held during the county fair, so youth will get to show their animal off to the judge and receive a ribbon. And don’t forget showmanship! That is the most important part of exhibiting an animal – the showmanship class is judged on how much youth know about their animal and how well they show it. This is a fantastic opportunity for growth and learning and should not be overlooked. Youth also complete a “Livestock Interview” which gives youth the chance to visit with a knowledgeable adult and share their knowledge of their livestock project • Non-Livestock Projects – A non-livestock exhibit/s youth bring them to the 4-H Building and talk to a judge about their project. The judges, who are caring and knowledgeable adults, will ask youth questions and give them advice on how they can learn more and grow more in their project. Youth will receive a ribbon for their projects. The projects stay at the fair during the whole week in the 4-H Building. What do the 4-H ribbon colors mean?
The Minnesota 4-H program awards ribbons based on the Danish System. This means that in each 4-H competition, 4-H members are graded based on set standards. All exhibits, presen-
tations, etc. receive a ribbon based on where they fall on the standard scale. More than one color of a ribbon may be awarded in a category or area. In other words, several 4-H members may receive blue ribbons within the same category. The ribbon colors awarded are purple, blue, red
and white. The blue, red and white ribbons do not designate first, second and third. They represent the level of achievement. Blue ribbons are awarded to 4-H’ers who exhibit outstanding work in the area or presentation by mastering a skill, increasing their knowledge and/or showing pride in workmanship and quality based on their age level. Red ribbons are awarded to 4-H’ers whose project or exhibition is not as polished as those of the blue level. The 4-H’er may have learned a skill but not yet mastered it completely. Information may not be complete or accurate. White ribbons are awarded to 4-H’ers whose project(s) may be incomplete or lacking in mastery of the skill. Purple ribbons are awarded to denote the champion or reserve champion in a presentation or exhibit. The purple or champion ribbon is awarded to the one 4-H’er whose skills, knowledge or mastery has surpassed all others in the category/division. Some events are awarded a participation ribbons to all participants. This is usually done for Cloverbuds (youth in grades K-2nd) level where competition is not developmentally appropriate and is highly discouraged. To learn more about 4-H in Mower County, contact 4-H Program Coordinator Kristin Krell by calling 507-4379552, emailing kspinler@umn.edu or visiting the website, www.4-H.umn.edu.

FFA
Article contributed by Kevin Brown, Southland FFA Advisor
at the Mower County Fair in 2016
Like always the FFA has a big presence at the Mower County Fair. Over 6 local chapters get involved in the week long activities. Chapters in the area who participate are: Southland, LeRoy- Ostrander, Hayfield, Grand Meadow, Stewartville , Austin, Spring Valley and Blooming Prairie.
Tuesday the week’s events kick off with the general entry day were non livestock entries such as Ag. Mechanics and crops exhibits are entered and judged by noon. The day also brings the FFA Sheep Show in the early afternoon and the always popular Children’s Barnyard which is open every day of the fair. Each chapter is assigned a day to work in the barnyard and students from the local chapters bring in animals for this event. Tuesday Livestock entries come to the fair at various times starting on Tuesday up through Thursday for FFA Dairy and Beef. All entries must be registered by July 15th in the Fair office to compete. Wednesday there are no FFA Shows but kids are still tending their FFA Exhibits Thursday night the FFA Beef Show will take place in the North arena of the Crane Pavilion starting at 4:00 PM. Friday is the busiest day with the FFA/ Open Class Dairy Show in the morning. These two shows have been blended together for the last few years. The FFA swine Show is at 3:00PM prior to the Midwest Barrow Show . Saturday is a big barnyard day for the FFA. As you can see the week of the fair is jam packed with events for FFA members and others to participate in and enjoy.

FUN AT THE FAIR 2016
Rodeo -
a fun event before and after competition Rodeo participants put their lives on the line each time they enter a competition. Drawing thousands upon thousands of spectators eager to watch the awe-inspiring skills of roping and riding various livestock, a rodeo is a series of events that tests competitors in a variety of ways.
It is believed that rodeo arose as a sport out of the necessities of working with cattle herding in areas all around the world, including Spain, Mexico, Canada, Australia, and the United States. Although rodeo is widely known as a cowboy’s sport throughout the western United States, its popularity extends far beyond American borders. In North America, professional rodeos are established and sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys and Women’s Professional Rodeo Association, while the Australian Bushmen’s Campdraft and Rodeo Association is the largest rodeo organization in Australia.
When thinking of rodeo, it’s easy to envision cowboys atop bucking broncos, and this is a classic rodeo event. However, rodeo also encompasses bull riding, which is one of the sport’s most popular and dangerous events. Bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, ladies barrel racing, and rope and tie are also popular rodeo events.
Warmer weather usually marks the beginning of rodeo season across the United States. Rodeos typically draw large crowds, and they may be held in conjunction with county fairs and other warm-weather events, making for a well-rounded celebration. When the competition has ended, the attention then typically turns to fun and food, most notably barbecue. For many, barbecue means savory ribs cooked and seasoned with savory sauces. This recipe
34
for “Spicy Pork Ribs” from Jacqueline Bellefontaine’s “What’s Cooking: Barbecue” (Thunder Bay Press) is a delicious way to prepare and serve barbecued ribs.
Spicy Pork Ribs
(Serves 4-6) 2 pounds pork spareribs 2/3 cup sieved tomatoes 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar 2 tablespoons dark muscovado sugar 1 clove garlic, crushed 1 teaspoon dried thyme 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary 1 teaspoon chili sauce Red chilis, to garnish Mixed salad greens, to serve
1. If you buy the spareribs in a single piece, carefully cut them into individual ribs using a very sharp knife. 2. Bring a large pan of water to a boil and add the pork ribs. Cook the ribs for 10 minutes, then drain them thoroughly. Place the ribs in a large, shallow, nonmetallic dish. 3. To make the spicy sauce, combine the sieved tomatoes, red wine vinegar, sugar, garlic, thyme, rosemary, and chili sauce in a bowl until thoroughly blended. 4. Pour the sauce over the spareribs and toss to coat on all sides. Marinate in the refrigerator for 1 hour. 5. Remove the spareribs from the sauce, repurposing the sauce for basting. Broil the spareribs over hot coals for 5 to 10 minutes, then move them to a cooler part of the barbecue. Cook for a further 15 to 20 minutes, turning and basting with the remaining sauce. 6. Transfer the spareribs to warm serving plates and garnish with the red chilis (if using). Serve with the mixed salad greens.
Chef’s tip: For authentic Southern-style ribs, make sure you buy pork spareribs and not rib chops. Pork spareribs are often sold cut into individual ribs, but it is quite easy to cut between the ribs with a sharp knife if you cannot find them already separated.
