FUN AT THE FAIR 2013 • MOWER COUNTY SHOPPER
Welcome
PAGE 3
The Mower County Shopper is pleased to introduce the first edition of our “Fun at the Fair” magazine. We hope you enjoy reading it as much as our entire staff enjoyed putting it together for you. We want to give a special “Thank You” to all of the people who so willingly gave of their time to share their Mower County Free Fair experiences with us. The feature stories about the 4-H organization and their participation in the fair activities, the exhibits and exhibitors, Senior Day and all the volunteers who help make the fair a fun and affordable event would not have been possible without the input and support of a great number of people. We look forward to expanding “Fun at the Fair” in the years to come and welcome your suggestions for story ideas and special feature sections. Please do not hesitate to give us a call or email us at anytime. Also, you can visit us on Facebook and enter your ideas there. We hope you enter our “Fun at the Fair Photo Contest”. Many of the photos submitted will be used in next year’s publication so be sure to capture the fun and excitement of the fair through your camera lens. We have great prizes and the names of the contest winners will appear in an upcoming edition of the Mower County Shopper. Be sure to enter as many photos as you would like. We hope you enjoy the 2013 Mower County Free Fair where there’s something for everyone every day! Volunteers make the historical society go ‘round By Amanda Lillie
When you visit the Mower County Fair this year, you may run into Dustin Heckman, director of the Mower County Historical Society, and he will most likely be running around like a chicken with its head cut off. Each year, Heckman is tasked with organizing enough volunteers to staff all the historical buildings and 11 outdoor themed exhibits. On average, he needs about 60 volunteers each day to keep things running smoothly. “As far as the volunteers go, we couldn’t survive (the week of the fair) without them,” Heckman said. Finding enough volunteers was actually becoming a problem a few years ago. Heckman said he was unable to keep some of the historical buildings open for the whole week of the fair due to volunteer loss. But that hasn’t been a problem recently. “A big accomplishment was that we have had every building open the last four years every day of the fair,” Heckman said. “That’s been a big thing for us.” Altogether the historical society has 16 buildings open to the public during the week of the fair. One of the most popular buildings, according to Heckman, is the Excelsior School, which is a display of an old schoolhouse. “Definitely the most popular is the schoolhouse, being able to see that,” Heckman said. “With the Rahilly Building having so many horse-drawn buggies, that’s also a natural draw for people.”
There is also a Fireman’s Museum open to the public, but Heckman said it doesn’t always get much traffic due to its slightly hidden location. “Definitely go into the fire building and see some of the fire fighting artifacts and some of the trucks we have,” he suggested. “But people don’t tend to see that because the building is kind of hidden behind some other buildings.” The original fair building will feature one of the newer exhibits: “Ghost Towns of Mower County.” According to Heckman, the ghost town exhibit was quite popular last year. Inside this exhibit, there is a volunteer dressed as a general store clerk who stands behind a store counter from one of the ghost towns and sells candy to fair-goers. “It’s an exhibit on ghost towns in Mower County and some of the reasons why they are ghost towns,” he said. “It’s kind of an interactive exhibit. You get to learn a lot about how these towns went away in the county.” Heckman only needs a couple of volunteers to keep things running smoothly in the historical buildings and outdoor exhibits. They are mostly there to make sure the crowd gets through the building easily and to answer any questions. The most daunting task for Heckman is organizing volunteers to staff the parking lot. “We need the most people in parking, and we need two people per shift. Our shifts go in twohour increments from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., so we need several people each day,” he said.

There is a major perk for volunteers, though. They get to park for free, which is nearly impossible to manage the week of the fair. Although the week of the Mower County Fair is always hectic for Heckman, he said he enjoys getting to know the volunteers — especially those who volunteer each year. There are three groups that volunteer for the historical society each year — Austin Area Amateur Radio Club, Mower County veterans organizations and Don Franklin and his group of former blacksmiths from the Blacksmith Shop. Over the years, Heckman has gotten to know the people in each group and always appreciates when they come back the next year. “I’ve gotten to know them pretty well,” Heckman said. “It’s great to see them at fair time. It’s

cool to see a lot of them coming back.” Aside from his three regular groups, Heckman has a lot of senior citizen and retired volunteers who enjoy the history behind the exhibits and also enjoy interacting with so many area people throughout the week. Even though preparing for the fair, finding volunteers and working all week is a tough, tiring job, Heckman said he enjoys watching people engage with the county’s history, and he enjoys talking with fair-goers throughout the week. The historical buildings are generally well-attended, and Heckman hopes for the same attendance this year. “We see very high numbers going through the buildings,” he said. “I encourage folks to come out and see the exhibits!”

45 years of passion By Amanda Lillie
Jim Wegner is passionate about two things — gardening and art. Each year at the Mower County Fair, his passions collide. Wegner has been entering his artwork into the fair for more than 45 years, and as president of the local horticulture group, he can also be found in the Horticulture Building throughout the week of the fair. As a child, Wegner frequently helped his parents in the garden. Around the same time, in third grade, he discovered his passion for art when he had an artist for a teacher. “I’ve been painting for just about ever,” Wegner said. “I liked art ever since I was in third grade, so I knew that was going to be

a part of me.” His two passions frequently intersect, as many of his watercolor paintings are floral in nature. He also makes art from dried plants and flowers. In 2012, he won the Reserve Champion award at the fair for his dry floral door swag, and in 2011 he was named Grand Champion for a dry floral wreath he made. Wegner occasionally uses living flowers to make art, but he generally prefers the dried materials. “I like to work with dry material because it’s there when I need it, and it doesn’t change,” Wegner said. “I kind of keep collecting things as I find them. Some plants dry well and some don’t.” Each year, Wegner enters four pieces of art - the maximum number - into the fair. He hasn’t made a final decision as to what he plans to enter this year, but he has an idea.

“I’ve been painting cranes,” he said. “We went to Baraboo, Wis., and visited the crane center there. I just finished a painting of a pair of dancing cranes doing their little mating dance.” Wegner enjoys doing floral paintings and always carries his paintbrush with him just in case inspiration strikes. He often photographs things he sees when he’s out and about and paints them later. As a former college art instructor, Wegner also volunteers for the Austin Area Arts Center. “I work there every Wednesday afternoon, and we have an open studio every Friday morning that I started,” he said. “It’s a time for our members to share and help each other.” He also teaches an occasional art class. Recently, he finished a class focusing on an oriental technique of working with masa paper. As for his work at the fair, Wegner is looking forward to spending time in the Horticulture Building.

“This year we are featuring edible plants and flowers,” he said. “If people haven’t taken advantage of the art exhibit and horticulture displays, they certainly should do that. I think it’s one of the most interesting parts of the fair.”

Senior Day at the Fair Senior Day at the Mower County Free Fair is really a big deal for the Seniors of Mower County. Cathy Ehley, Recreation/Wellness Director & Memory Care Consultant at The Cedars of Austin, has first hand experience with Seniors at the Fair. For the past several years, Cathy has coordinated outings to the fair for the residents of The Cedars of Austin. “Everyone, including several staff members, has a great time at the fair and really look forward to it.” says Cathy. Typically, The Cedars van makes two trips to the fair on Senior Day; one in the morning for the Memory Care residents and a second trip in the afternoon for the Independent and Assisted Living residents.
Many of the residents are former farmers or from farming families so they especially enjoy seeing all the animals and the old tractors and farm machinery. All the residents love to listen to the live music and they love to sample all the great fair food! “Once again this year, I am sure The Cedars van will be packed full on both trips. It’s such an exciting time for our residents.”

4-H Planning Fun Shows For Fair Week By Amanda Lillie
Among the many exhibits, food vendors and carnival rides at the Mower County Fair are hundreds of 4-H members who work tirelessly to plan their own exhibits and shows for fair week. Along with exhibiting their projects and hard work done throughout the year, the members of 4-H also participate in events that are silly and fun for everyone at the fair. In recent years, the 4-H Llama Show has been growing in popularity, and the show’s superintendent, Julie Hendrikson, expects the trend to continue this year. “This year we expect it to be better than before,” Hendrikson said. “The costumes are just outstanding. People would just not believe it.” That’s right — llamas in costumes. Each participant in the show dresses up in a themed costume with their llama.
“Last year we had a moose and a Canadian mountie,” Hendrikson said. “Another one dressed her llama as a butterfly and she was the butterfly catcher. We have someone this year whose llama is going to be a crow and

the boy is going to be a scarecrow; we had a sheep with Little Bo Peep.” The more the kids cover their llamas, the higher their scores will be — as long as the llamas tolerate the costumes without fidgeting. Along with the costume portion of the show, the participants also have to lead their llamas through a series of obstacles. Some of the obstacles are on the sillier side, like going through a hula hoop or doing jumps, while others are more practical, like walking up a set of stairs or through a doorway. Twenty-nine kids ages nine through 13 will participate in the Llama Show this year, and Hendrikson said she loves working with them to train their llamas. “I just love teaching and love sharing it with the kids,” she said. “My family is leasing out 21 llamas to 4-H kids this year ... and they come out and do practices and chores.” The kids are also spinning the llama fur, called fiber, and using it for 4-H knitting projects. Hendrikson said some of those projects should be on display in the 4-H building during the fair. The Kiss the Farm Animal competition should also be a hit again this year. 4-H Ambassador Lisa Stundahl, who has been in 4-H for 13 years, said fair-goers get a kick out of the competition. “We find local celebrities, so usually we’ll have a few newscasters, and we have people put money in a bucket with which celebrity they want to kiss the farm animal,” Stundahl said. “Whoever has the most money kisses the animal.” In previous years, local celebrities have had to kiss cows, chickens, rabbits, sheep and horses. The money raised

from the event is donated locally. In past years, the money has gone to cancer research at the Hormel Institute and to the local food shelf. The recipient for this year has not been determined yet, according to Stundahl. Stundahl is one of 21 4-H ambassadors this year. The ambassadors are a group of 4-H members in eighth grade through 12th grade. Gayle Perkins, leader of the ambassadors, said the ambassadors spend the year planning 4-H events and activities, doing community service and preparing for the Mower County Fair. They act as role models for the younger 4-H members, too. “They are just all around a group of young people that help wherever needed,” Perkins said. “They are true leaders; they are our future of tomorrow in leadership. The younger kids look up to them.” And even though being an ambassador requires a strong commitment and work ethic, Stundahl said it’s all worth it. “(The fair) is a crazy time, but it’s fun,” she said. “We basically start planning for the next year’s fair right after this fair ends.”
