Home Maintenance Tips for Spring After a long, dark winter, spring's bright sun and warm winds are a breath of fresh air. The only downside? All that sunshine spotlights your leaf-filled gutters, cracked sidewalks and the dead plants in last year's flower beds. Use this checklist to help you target the areas that need maintenance. Check for loose or leaky gutters. Improper drainage can lead to water in the basement or crawl space. Make sure downspouts drain away from the foundation and are clear and free of debris. Low areas in the yard or next to the foundation should be filled with compacted soil. Spring rains can cause yard flooding, which can lead to foundation flooding and damage. Also, when water pools in these low areas in summer, it creates a breeding ground for insects. Use a screwdriver to probe the wood trim around windows, doors, railings and decks. Have repairs made now before the spring rains do more damage to the exposed wood. From the ground, examine roof shingles to see if any were lost or damaged during winter. If your home has an older roof covering, you may want to start a budget for replacement. The summer sun can really damage roof shingles. Shingles that are cracked, buckled or loose or are miss-

ing granules need to be replaced. Flashing around plumbing vents, skylights and chimneys need to be checked and repaired by a qualified roofer. Inspect concrete slabs for signs of cracks or movement. All exterior slabs except pool decks should drain away from the home's foundation. Have the cracks filled with a concrete crack filler or silicone caulk. When weather permits, power-wash and then seal the concrete. Check outside hose faucets for freeze damage. Turn the water on and place your thumb or finger over the opening. If you can stop the flow of water, it is likely the pipe inside the home is damaged and will need to be replaced. Have a qualified heating and cooling contractor clean and service the outside unit of the air conditioning system. Clean coils operate more efficiently, and an annual service call will keep the system working at peak performance levels. Change interior filters on a regular basis. Check your gas- and battery-powered lawn equipment to make sure it is ready for summer use. Clean equipment and sharp cutting blades will make yard work easier.

Announces Grand Opening, New Name

After 50 years in the Austin community, St. Mark’s Lutheran Home has announced changes that will prepare the senior housing and services provider for its next 50 years. “We’re now known as St. Mark’s Living,” executive director Chris Schulz said. “Growing older is much more about living. As care, housing options and services have evolved over the past five decades, so has St. Mark’s.” St. Mark’s opened in 1963 as a “retirement home” with board and care, and has become a thriving senior living campus serving the entire region. Fifty years later, Schulz and other campus leaders invite the public to attend an open house on Saturday, April 13, from 1-5 p.m. to celebrate recently completed construction and renovation projects. “We’ll have music, refreshments, food and door prizes.” Schulz said. “Area residents are welcome to tour St. Mark’s and help us celebrate bringing new and innovative options to area seniors.” St. Mark’s Living offers five housing options – independent living, assisted living, care center, short-term rehabilitation and memory care – that provide the level of care necessary for a resident to maintain their independence while also feeling safe and well-cared for.” Construction began at St. Mark’s in January 2012 and included the construction of 25 new assisted living apartments; renovating 21 apartments for memory care; renovating 16 private rooms for short-term rehabilitation; creating a new occupational and physical therapy area, a multi-purpose gathering room, chapel and living area, all near the new front entrance to the campus on 4th Street; and relocating and enhancing the beauty shop and café area. Kitchen Cabinet Basics Browse through the kitchen cabinet section of your local hardware store, and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re sure to come across dozens of styles. Before you start looking into the style choices available, you might want to know a little more about how kitchen cabinets are actually constructed. Kitchen cabinets are generally constructed in two ways: framed and frameless. Framed cabinets have an actual front built onto the cabinet box, making them stronger and easier to install than frameless designs. They also feature a more traditional look, which may explain why they are a staple in American kitchens. Because of the front, however, they offer less storage space and cost more. Frameless cabinets have no front. The doors attach right onto the cabinet sides, allowing for ample storage space. With minimal space between doors, frameless cabinets make for a clean design. They are typical of European kitchens. Kitchen cabinet doors come in three main types: inset, full overlay and 1/2 inch overlay. Inset doors fit entirely within the cabinet front. While they look nice, they are harder to install and require an even temperature to be maintained in the home to avoid contraction and expansion and ultimately sticking.
