BE A FISHING HOST May 9th, 10th, 11th We’re looking for outdoor and fishing enthusiasts to host registered guests for the fishing challenge during the Governor’s Fishing Opener (GFO). You do not need to be a fishing “expert,” you just need to have a properly functioning & licensed boat and a willingness to spend some time talking about our great area. You’ll want to be available in the evenings leading up to the GFO, specifically Thursday evening for the Host Appreciation Dinner & Rules Meeting and possibly Friday evening to meet with your guests and make a plan for the Saturday opener. Further, you’ll be required to be available on Saturday until approximately 4 p.m. All fishing hosts will receive a generous commemorative package, gas coupon and bait.
Spots are filling quickly, so please visit our Fishing Hosts page at mngovernorsopener.com for more details or to register or call Dick 507-383-2231 with questions

Best Protection Is Early Detection
Every Dollar, Every Cancer, Every Person MATTERS Paint the Town Pink is in its ninth year, with a growing number of people, and communities throughout the region joining together to support the world-renowned cancer research of The Hormel Institute. Why? Because people care about people and want to stop the pain, suffering and premature death cancer causes. Thanks to Paint the Town Pink funds, eight innovative cancer research projects are underway at The Hormel Institute - research that would not take place without PTTP and which furthers the understanding of breast cancer and other cancers. Paint the Town Pink means answers are accelerated. “We are so thankful for Paint the Town Pink and the important funds that furthers research at The Hormel Institute,” said Gail Dennison, Director of Development and Public Relations for The Hormel Institute. “These projects are necessary to further discoveries so scientists understand how to better prevent cancer or how to control it so people can live longer, healthier lives. That is what all of us want.” The PTTP projects in their second year of study include:
1. Dr. Rhoderick Rick Brown: “Role of Inflammation in Breast Cancer Initiation and Progression: Intervention Potential by Sphingolipid Transfer Proteins” 2. Dr. Yibin Deng: “Targeting Therapy for BRCA1/Trp53 Mutation-Driven Triple-Negative Breast

A cancer support team can help men and women who have been diagnosed with cancer fight their disease and handle its side effects. Supportive family, friends and medical professionals can help many people cope with the emotional and physical effects of cancer. Counselors/therapists The support of a mental health professional can help cancer patients cope with the psychological impact that their disease can have. Some therapists are specially trained to treat those diagnosed with cancer. Doctors may recommend that their patients seek help with managing the emotions that can arise after a cancer diagnosis, such as depres-
sion, anxiety and confusion.

Support groups Groups offer support in various ways. Simply knowing there are others out there in similar situations can help individuals feel as though they are not alone in their fight against cancer.

However, there are some organizations designed specifically to provide support for cancer patients. Peer-led groups are facilitated by group members. Professionally-led groups are typically overseen by a trained medical professional. Groups may meet in person or be available through online social networks. Some support groups may be designed for specific people, including the relatives of people with cancer, spouses, people of certain age groups, and any combination thereof. Medical staff

Qualified and compassionate oncologists, nutritionists, physical therapists, nurses, and others can make cancer treatment a little easier to swallow. Find staff who are professional and knowledgeable, but also empathetic. Friends and family Of course no cancer support team would be complete without close friends and family members. These are the people who cancer patients must rely on to accompany them to appointments, run errands and offer comfort when needed. The fight against cancer is never easy, but the right support team can alleviate some of the stressors and burdens.

Myth & Truth to Breast Cancer The Breast Cancer Myth Drinking milk (or dairy) causes breast cancer. The Truth Several myths persist about the correlation between dairy intake and the increased risk of breast cancer. Over many decades, studies have shown that dairy consumption does not increase the risk of breast cancer. The Breast Cancer Myth Finding a lump in your breast means you have breast cancer. The Truth Only a small percentage of breast lumps turn out to be cancer. But if you discover a persistent lump in your breast or notice any changes in breast tissue, it should never be ignored. It is very important that you see a physician for a clinical breast exam. He or she may possibly order breast imaging studies to determine if this lump is of concern or not. Take charge of your health by performing routine breast self-exams, establishing ongoing communication with your doctor, getting an annual clinical breast exam, and scheduling your routine screening mammograms.
The Breast Cancer Myth Men do not get breast cancer; it affects women only. The Truth Quite the contrary, each year it is estimated that approximately 2,190 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 410 will die. While this percentage is still small, men should also check themselves periodically by doing a breast self-exam while in the shower and reporting any changes to their physicians. Breast cancer in men is usually detected as a hard lump underneath the nipple and areola. Men carry a higher mortality than women do, primarily because awareness among men is less and they are less likely to assume a lump is breast cancer, which can cause a delay in seeking treatment. The Breast Cancer Myth A mammogram can cause breast cancer to spread. The Truth A mammogram, or x-ray of the breast, currently remains the gold standard for the early detection of breast cancer. Breast compression while getting a mammogram cannot cause cancer to spread. According to the National Cancer Institute, “The

benefits of mammography, however, nearly always outweigh the potential harm from the radiation exposure. Mammograms require very small doses of radiation. The risk of harm from this radiation exposure is extremely low.” The standard recommendation is an annual mammographic screening for women beginning at age 40. Base your decision on your physician’s recommendation and be sure to discuss any remaining questions or concerns you may have with your physician. The Breast Cancer Myth If you have a family history of breast cancer, you are likely to develop breast cancer. The Truth While women who have a family history of breast cancer are in a higher risk group, most women who have breast cancer have no family history. Statistically only about 10% of individuals diagnosed with breast cancer have a family history of
this disease. If you have a first degree relative with breast cancer: If you have a mother, daughter, or sister who developed breast cancer below the age of 50, you should consider some form of regular diagnostic breast imaging starting 10 years before the age of your relative’s diagnosis. If you have a second degree relative with breast cancer: If you have had a grandmother or aunt who was diagnosed with breast cancer, your risk increases slightly, but it is not in the same risk category as those who have a first degree relative with breast cancer. If you have multiple generations diagnosed with breast cancer on the same side of the family, or if there are several individuals who are first degree relatives to one another, or several family members diagnosed under age 50, the probability increases that there is a breast cancer gene contributing to the cause of this familial history.

Early Detection is The Best Protection Signs & Symptoms Every person should know the symptoms and signs of breast cancer, and any time an abnormality is discovered, it should be investigated by a healthcare professional. Most people who have breast cancer symptoms and signs will initially notice only one or two, and the presence of these symptoms and signs do not automatically mean that you have breast cancer. By performing monthly breast self-exams, you will be able to more easily identify any changes in your breast. Be sure to talk to your healthcare professional if you notice anything unusual. A Change In How The Breast Or Nipple Feels Nipple tenderness or a lump or thickening in or near the breast or underarm area A change in the skin texture or an enlargement of pores in the skin of the breast (some describe this as similar
to an orange peel’s texture) A lump in the breast (It’s important to remember that all lumps should be investigated by a healthcare professional, but not all lumps are cancerous.) A Change In The Breast Or Nipple Appearance Any unexplained change in the size or shape of the breast Dimpling anywhere on the breast Unexplained swelling of the breast (especially if on one side only) Unexplained shrinkage of the breast (especially if on one side only) Recent asymmetry of the breasts (Although it is common for women to have one breast that is slightly larger than the other, if the onset of asymmetry is recent, it should be checked.) Nipple that is turned slightly inward or inverted Skin of the breast, areola, or

What Can I Do To Reduce My Risk Of Breast Cancer? Although you cannot prevent
cancer, some habits that can help reduce your risk are: Maintain a healthy weight Stay physically active Eat fruits and vegetables Do not smoke Limit alcohol consumption
