Welcome

PAGE 3

The Mower County Shopper is pleased to introduce the second edition of our “Fun at the Fair” magazine. We hope you enjoy reading it as much as our entire staff enjoyed putting it together for you. We want to give a special “Thank You” to all of the people who so willingly gave of their time to share their Mower County Free Fair experiences with us. The feature stories about the 4-H and FFA organizations and their participation in the fair activities, the exhibits and exhibitors, Senior Day and all the volunteers who help make the fair a fun and affordable event would not have been possible without the input and support of a great number of people. We look forward to expanding “Fun at the Fair” in the years to come and welcome your suggestions for story ideas and special feature sections. Please do not hesitate to give us a call or email us at anytime. Also, you can visit us on Facebook and enter your ideas there. We hope you enter our “Fun at the Fair Photo Contest”. Many of the photos submitted will be used in next year’s publication so be sure to capture the fun and excitement of the fair through your camera lens. We have great prizes and the names of the contest winners will appear in an upcoming edition of the Mower County Shopper. Be sure to enter as many photos as you would like. We hope you enjoy the 2014 Mower County Free Fair where there’s something for everyone every day! SENIORS HAVE FUN AT THE FAIR! Courtesy of the St. Mark’s Living

For the past several years, the residents of St. Mark’s Living have enjoyed spending time at the Mower County Free Fair. Christina Viehauser, the Recreation Director at St. Mark’s, takes care of all the details and makes sure everyone has a chance to visit their favorite parts of the fair. In addition to Senior Day at the Fair on Thursday, they also go

on Wednesday and Friday just to be sure they don’t miss anything. They like to go in the afternoon for a few hours. There are usually fi ve or six residents on each trip, along with a staff member or volunteer assigned to each one. The residents love the fair food and have plenty of time to sample the mini-donuts, corn dogs, ice cream and anything else that meets their fancy. Besides the fair food, the residents love to see all the animals and the 4-H Exhibits. They especially love the petting zoo. Many of the residents have a strong farming connection so they like to see the tractors and antique implements. Also, the live entertainment at Fair Square is always a big hit. On occasion, it’s been too hot for them to enjoy going to the fair. But that doesn’t mean they miss out on tasting that good fair food. Staff members at St. Mark’s make a special run to pick up whatever the residents request. Special orders don’t upset them!

History of the Mower County Fair

Courtesy of the Mower County Historical Society

Records of the Mower County Fair date as early as the 1860’s when the first Agricultural Society was organized. The first fair in Mower County was held October 11th and 12th, 1864, in the village of Lansing. Every village in the county was offered a chance to bid a premium. Whichever village offered the highest premium would be given the right to locate the fair in their village. Lansing, much to the disgruntlement of the citizens of Austin, offered the highest premium and was given the privilege to host the fair. The second Mower County Fair was held October 10th and 11th, 1865. The grounds were improved to provide a suitable place for exhibiting. A track was added for a women’s equestrian display and the exhibition of trotting horses. Public officials addressed fairgoers on agricultural concerns. In spite of the dramatic efforts to encourage the county to participate, the 1865 fair was not a suc-

cess and caused the dissolution of the Agricultural Society. In 1868, a newly organized Agriculture Society managed to organize a fair that was strictly an agricultural fair and off ered $400 of premiums. A race track was provided for the speed trials of “fast nags”. It was strongly specifi ed that racing would not monopolize the fair. Through the years, the Agriculture Society struggled and it wasn’t until 1882 when the Agriculture Society joined with the Farmers Alliance and began soliciting funds to purchase permanent grounds for the County Fair. Early in 1883, the Agriculture Society purchased the Austin Driving Park for $1,800 to be used as the county fairgrounds.

PAGE 19

On September 3, 1883, the fair was cancelled when the Basford Block where the premium list was being printed fell and was destroyed. There was not enough time to reprint the 40-50 page premium book before the start of the fair. Finally, in 1884, Mower County’s fi rst successful fair was held at the Austin Driving Park location. The fair, its organization, length, style and format have changed considerably since that time as the organizers saw the need to provide something that would interest everyone in the family. The Mower County Fair celebrated its Centennial year in 1984 with the 100th fair on the same site. 2014 marks the 130th anniversary of the Mower County Free Fair.

Youth Showcase a Year of 4H Learning at Mower County Fair

On August 5th-10th, more than 350 youth from Mower County will showcase the learning and achievements they have accomplished in 4-H at the Mower County Fair. 4-H at Minnesota county fairs are not just fun annual events. Every summer, tens of thousands of 4-H youth participate in county fairs to showcase the knowledge and skills they’ve gained throughout the year, and to continue their learning experiences. 4-H youth spend months working on projects designed to equip them with essential life skills such as problem

solving, decision making, project management, communications and public speaking. 4-H offers projects and activities in: Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM), Science of Agriculture & Gardening, Citizenship & Leadership, Healthy Living, Expressive Arts & Communication, Family & Consumer Science, Environmental & Earth Science, Shooting Sports & Wildlife. The top projects in Mower County are 1. Photography 2. Rabbit 3. Swine 4. Crafts and Fine Arts 5. Beef 6. Sheep 7. Horse 8. Clothing 9. Poultry 10. Lama. 4-H’ers then share their accomplishments and educate the public about their subject at their local county fair. They also lead visitors on tours of the 4-H buildings and barns, and conduct workshops and hands-on demonstrations for the public. 4-H’ers who

demonstrate the highest achievements are then selected to participate in 4-H at the Minnesota State Fair! County fairs not only make great memories, they help 4-H youth grow into successful adults. “One of 4-H’s priorities is to provide learning and leadership experiences that guide youth in building relationships, developing communication techniques, and strengthening organizational skills,” said Dorothy M. Freeman, Extension Center for Youth Development Associate Dean and State 4-H Director. “Through these experiences, youth fi nd the leaders within themselves and are able to make a positive impact in their club, home, school or community.” 4-H clubs are groups of youth who meet regularly to work on 4-H projects, perform community service, develop leadership skills and learn to work together. Guided by one or more adult volunteers, a club can be any size, from a small group of neighborhood kids to a large group from a school

Did you know…. 4-H is a youth development program of the University of Minnesota Extension. Available for youth grades k-1 year after high school, 4-H’ers participate in hands-on learning experiences in STEM, citizenship & leadership, animal science, creative arts and much more. Through this learn-by-doing process, youth obtain essential life skills such as problem solving, decision making, coping and communicating that help them succeed in their school, college, community and career. Research shows that youth who participate in 4-H have better grades and are more emotionally engaged with school, are more than twice as likely to be civically active and contribute to their communities, and are 47% less likely to have risky or problem behaviors.

FFA at the Mower County Fair

The FFA has been an integral part of the Mower County Free Fair for many years. The FFA has several chapters who take part in the fair every year. They are the Southland , LeRoy Ostrander, Hayfield, Kingsland, Stewartville, Lyle, Blooming Prairie, Austin and Grand Meadow chapters. Each chapter has students involved in many areas within the fair. The FFA is most well known for the first petting zoo in the state and also has many high quality animals being shown in the Beef, Swine, Dairy, Swine and Sheep shows. The county FFA chapters also have other activities such as the tractor driving contest, general and livestock judging on Saturday of the fair and the crops and agriAt Renk we provide products that minimize some of the everyday challenges and give you the results you want. cultural mechanics projects that are shown in the horticulture building. The FFA at the Mower County Free Fair has changed over the years in several ways. Back in the late 70’s over 600 hogs were shown at the FFA swine show and today it is around 70 head. At that time Osage and Saint Ansger also showed swine. Other changes are that the animal shows have opened up so any FFA member in the State can show. Other changes have been the blending of the open class and FFA dairy show together. This opens up the Crane Pavilion for other shows like the 4-H Llama show. One of the new things for this year is the addition of a skid loader event in the tractor

They are Open Class, which is open to anyone over 18, and the FFA division for FFA members over 16 years of age. FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of young people by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education.

He purchased a 1955 Allis-Chalmers WD-45 in Blair, Nebraska in August 1985 and used three tractors to get enough good parts to restore it. He had it completely disassembled except for the final drive cases and the steering box. After several years of collecting new parts, rebuilding

many of the components, and lots of new metal work, the restoration was finished in July 2010. Dave took the tractor to the Albert City, Iowa, Threshermen & Collectors Show, “Gathering of the Orange” in August of 2010. There he met Ray Hoffman, a writer for the “Antique Power” magazine. Ray asked Dave if he could do a feature article on his tractor, which he was pleased to do. The four page article, complete with pictures, appeared in the May/June 2014 issue of “Antique Power”.
